Don't just devolve into combat, try to prep in a way that causes conflict, try to have fleshed out NPCs, and try to have 4 different plans based on what players might do. The plans should be flexible rather than specific.

>Most “collapse” scenarios are like most human thinking, linear and binary. Suddenly there is a huge SNAP! and society just falls apart, leaving a smouldering ruin through which starvation-crazed people wander. In reality, collapse is like Brazil: a society slowly fades away into third world levels of hygiene, wealth and order. It never really fails, it just becomes useless, kind of like ancient Greece and Rome.

Depends what stage you want to play.

Generally it's not very fun playing a game where everything is getting worse and there's nothing you can do about it. That's what reality is for.

You are not very imaginative are you? The players in a game like this are the heroes who stand up and bring the civilization back to its former glory. Or create a new civilization from the smoldering embers.

Or maybe they're taking advantage of the poor helpless society to further their own selfish agendas.

ooo, see the thing with the counts and tomb kings, is that the tomb kings are the people who fought against the first black necromancer.

That first necromancer was thought killed by the tomb kings, who were stuck as mummies after the ancient wars against him, but his apprentice escaped and made other apprentices to the north, and these apprentices are what make up the Vampire Counts.

Tomb Kings thus hate the vampire counts because of their use of necromancy from their ancient enemy, and because...

Are most people in a typical D&D setting aware that people can take more damage as they get more experience?

They don't have to know the term HP and the exact numbers, but if say a veteran fighter takes a flask of acid to the face and is okay, at worst needing only a full night's rest to fully heal, would most people attribute it to luck even though it's a consistent repeatable phenomenon, or would they acknowledge that there's something special about that fighter as a result of being in so many fights?

No, the veteran fighter didn't dodge the acid. No, the acid wasn't a dud. No, it's not a person's will to fight. No, it's not because the veteran fighter is wearing magical armor. No, it's not a combination of factors. Any way to explain how HP actually represent something realistic only creates illogical edge cases. Please assume HP literally exist for the purpose of my question.
Yes, I know HP are an abstraction. That doesn't answer my question. This is not a why question. This is a yes or no question.

I don't want your excuses. I don't want a pat on the back for realizing this very obvious acceptable break from reality. I don't mind HP in games. I'm asking whether people in the setting are aware that HP exist.

I do not care that game mechanics are unrealistic. I do not want to change any game mechanics to make them realistic. This is not about realism at all. It is about the awareness and behavior of NPCs.
My issue is with fictional characters in a fictional setting, where the game is all they've ever known, acting as though their setting worked exactly like real life when it obviously doesn't.

This is not a why question. This is a yes or no question. Do they know it, or do they not know it?

>>47538214
I think most people would accept a battle hardened veteran to be able to take more of a beating than a fresh newcomer and recover faster too. The problem is if the acid leaves no mark whatsoever and this repeats, then either the people think it's luck or magic or the game doesn't make other people aware of the "HP" stat.
>>
>>47538214
People in DnD are generally aware that legendary heroes are capable of taking blows that would fell lesser beings, and keeping on trucking.
This is in keeping with our real world myths and fantasy tales, where similar things happen. Even in our action movies and video games and animes and whatever.

However:
Do people really try making DnD 'realistic' in any way? that's pretty dumb of them. The world is literally created out of the intersection of the elemental planes into the Prime Material...

Usually non-lethal damage is assumed to be caused by an off-target attack if it something like an acid throw. Even if you aim at their face it might hit them indirectly if it only did something, say, 12 damage. Enough to kill a low-level character, but not a high-level one.

Of course, there is the alternate explanation that once you reach a certain level you are more than just an ordinary human. Even regular sword and board fighters are closer to being a legendary hero than just a very good swordsman once they reach a certain level. Such a powerful being may easily shrug...

I'm from 17th-century Argentina, not 20th-century Mexico.

I had a thought, /tg/. Have you ever played (or played with) a character who would "dress down" to adventure instead of during off time? We're expecting the standard idea: The heavily armored paladin or warrior gets back to a comfortable tavern and gets out of their armor, putting on some comfortable clothes to relax after their ordeal. But what about the opposite? A character who dresses normally when they're not out fighting monsters and exploring ruins, but when they go on an adventure they dress down to a skimpy outfit, either by necessity for their occupation or tradition?

For example a barbarian who dresses like anyone when he or she is in town (albeit bigger and more muscular of course) but when they go off into the wilds they strip down to a classic barbarian outfit. Or to go more wild, a powerful sorceress who wears comfortable slacks and jumpers while "off duty" but puts on a skimpy sorceress getup when they go out on their next quest?

I dunno, I just found the mental image kind of amusing.

Yes.

Tzeentch told Magnus that he can destroy the Space Wolves ships or scatter them, if Magnus asked him to do it. Magnus refused Tzeentch's offer, unwisely.

Also it's speculated by the Eldar that Slaanesh protected and guided the Kraken splinter fleet while within the warp and then threw it out above Valdor.

I can imagine a way or two.

First, which is a bit of cheating: Vortex bombs. Muddles up realspace and warp locally.

Second: pull an Alderaan event and blow up a planet, with enough time to instill extreme emotions in every inhabitant and create a localized storm in the warp.

Both variants are pretty much shooting the blue, though.

Hello again everyone, i was hoping you guys could help give me tips on how to play a necromancer without being called edgy.

its a running joke that one our players is pure edge, he is so annoying with it and sees nothing wrong with it, he actually created a character without parents un-ironically. so we constantly mock him for his edgy characters.

I don't want to risk any kind of edge in my character, seeing as how everyone here refers to them as Edgy-mancers, so what can i do to prevent this?

for starters doom, gloom, and brood are off the table. I'm going to play either a charismatic type i think because its what I'm good at, the party "Face" if you will. But i also want to command an army of the living dead at my command.

thanks in advance

Between Paizo's "playtests" for Pathfinder, Wizards of the Coast's "playtests" for 5e, and White Wolf/Onyx Path's "playtests" for their game lines, do any major game developers use their playtests for actually getting feedback on what to fix about a game, rather than ignore all criticism and use the "playtests" just to build up hype?
18 replies and 2 images submitted. Click here to view.
>>
>>47534060
D&D Next demonstrably changed from playtest feedback from version to version until it became 5e proper. Even now with Unearthed Arcana it changes regularly, such as prestige classes being dropped after one attempt, the first ranger attempt being scrapped, and the psionics playtest being updated to be more versatile. 5e is probably the most built-by-public-opinion tabletop RPG in existence.

Your problem is that you expect the majority of playtesters to agree with your point of view. They don't, so you decide to believe that the developers don't use any feedback. There's a name for that type of cognitive bias, probably.

Either cognitive dissonance or confirmation bias is the term you are looking for.

In any case, you're correct. Devs do playtest their games and use the feedback to change facetsof the games. The inherent problem with this process though is the play tester's own biases.

36 KB,
So one way or another, I've decided I'm going to make a blue deck. Now my predicament is that I don't really have any single costing blue creatures, most are 3+ though I have a FEW 2's. So I figure I need to aim to play slow, but my question is, can I? I mainly play a white deck that puts out tokens like a white trash girls put out kids when they're with a black guy, and my other deck is a red green, so I'm use to getting guys out at a pretty fast rate, perhaps I'm just insecure about waiting to get fuckers out there.

63 KB,
Think of a celebrity, historical figure, or other famous person. Got it? Good.

If they lived today and were a fa/tg/uy, what 40k army would they run?

Nids.

>"This game is going to be a nautical/spacefaring game. Your characters had better be really good at sailing/space-sailing!"
>everyone sinks character resources to be good at sailing/space-sailing

>ship is used as a plot device to get from Land/Planet A to Land/Planet B anyway, because time aboard a ship is boring except for the occasional "Something is going wrong with the ship" side quest
>all those character resources are wasted

Make them have their own ships, and make them shipgirls
>>
>>47531704
Your GM is shit. Top off my head for ship to ship scenarios:
>Not fighting space pirates in asteroid belts
>Not salvaging delirect spaceship wrecks for loot
>Not escorting VIPs through pirate space

Anything that is requisite / part of the premise of the campaign should be handed out for free. Don't make a game entirely about playing ghosts and then force the players to pay "out of pocket" to be ghosts, for example.

63 KB,
I have found myself in a very odd situation. I am very good at magic and all of my friends have noticed i play one very budget modern deck. I am good at the game but i refuse to pay 1000's of dollars for cards because i just cant at the moment. I need some sort of proxy/fake cards to use just until i can afford the real thing. Where do i go for the good fake mtg cards?

if you're looking for the chinamen, you should probably rethink your life, this is why you only play kitchen table with friends and stop getting mad you cant get the most optimal deck ever

on another note, you can also just get a fucking job, work your ass, get mone and then save for your much needed staples
>>
>>47531441
get a job hippie
>>

Check aliexpress or Villezheng for chinamen proxies. You won't gain the cards to make a whole deck this way. Just copies of the chase rares.
Or keep playing budget decks and kicking their ass.

I take inspiration from all sorts of media, and from personal experiences. RPGs, games, movies, books, pictures, family, stories, songs, or even a catchy phrase can get the gears turning. I'll often merge several disparate influences into one, both to round things out and to distill the sources into something less of a rip-off. By then I usually have an 'elevator pitch' for the character's name and/or personality (for names I like mashups of obscure references, distinct sounds and memorability).

From that concept I either design a character I want to roleplay and find a build to match, or vice-versa. These days I try to strike somewhere down the middle. I often start with a skeletal 'gimmick' and expand out.

Generally, I ask myself questions:
>Is this something I've never tried before, or maybe haven't done in a while?
>Is this character fun for the entire table, or just myself?
>Do I think we'll get bored of this concept quickly, or do I feel like there's some life in it?
>If the game has classes, what race/class combo would best draw out the features of this character?
>What does this character bring to the table, whether for roleplay or rollplay?
>How can I marry this overall concept to the setting, and ensure it works in a group environment?

If it doesn't match my (or the GM's) criteria, I don't go back to the drawing board, but I WILL revise areas that don't work until it clicks. Compromises can and should be made.

From there, I like to draw/find a picture that describes the character at-a-glance. Then I'll start thinking about spells/alignment if they apply. I usually keep these ideas prepared, but not written in advance so that I can make last-minute adjustments during chargen.

I like to have a few broad character concepts down the pipeline. That way if a campaign comes up in a setting I'm not too enthused about, at least I can enjoy sharing my character with others.

usually they are all just self inserts of my feels, with a theme related identity/color scheme
