Has anyone ever ran a game with this before? I'm going to be GMing one soon and it seems like I have to homebrew a lot.

Burning Wheel is often described on /tg/ as "the best system you never played."

People seem to admire the system's mechanics and will often say reading the book provides invaluable insight into how to be a good GM, but you're hard-pressed to find anyone who's actually gotten a group together to play the damn thing.

Someday, though. Someday...
>>
I'd be down for this if only literally anyone on earth ran it. Fun fact: Burning Wheel is the Atuk of traditional games. People who express interest in playing it disappear.

Welp it was nice knowing you guys.

I've skimmed through the book a few times and it's great how it's character based vs stats based. Still struggling with stating monsters not in the manual though.

Thump -- Thump -- Thump!

The reverse-jointed legs of "Executioner," your family's mech. Behind you follows a small mob of footsoldiers, there to prevent the enemy's foot from attempting to board or topple your mech. The fresh coat of blue and gold paint shimmers in the sun. With every step, the shock absorbers in the arms keep them relaxed in steady. In each arm is a great stubby cannon loaded with both ball and canister and a great hydraulic claw. Beside you, in another mech which resembles a large knight armed with hydraulic spike in one arm and...

And then he got all offended about like the sheer notion that it was free was something bad.

Strangely enough i found out later you don't get them free and infact its just a dip to buy a model and paint another one.

Fuck that, I just want an army not a money pit.

Overshadowed by other editions edition.
If you are GMing, remember...
1. To strongly consider giving out at least one free "tax feat," like Expertise and pre-errata Melee Training.
2. To use Monster Manual 3/Monster Vault/Monster Vault: Nentir Vale/Dark Sun Creature Catalog math. Avoid or manually update anything with Monster Manual 1 or 2 math.
3. That skill challenges have always been scene-framing devices for the GM, that players should never be overtly told that they are in a skill challenge, and that the Rules Compendium has the most up-to-date skill DCs and skill challenge rules.

If you would like assistance with character optimization, remember to tell us what the what the rest of the players are playing, what books are allowed, your starting level, the highest level you expect to reach, what free feats you receive, if anything is banned, whether or not themes are allowed, your starting equipment, and how much you dislike item-dependent builds.
If you wish to talk about settings, 4e's settings are Points of Light (the planes and the natural world's past empires are heavily detailed in various sourcebooks and magazines), 4e Forgotten Realms, 4e Eberron, 4e Dark Sun, and whatever setting you would like to bring into 4e.

Nentir Vale locations: http://web.archive.org/web/20130520012550/http://community.wizards.com/nentir_vale/wiki/Nentir_Vale_Locations
Points of Light timeline (ignore everything else on this mostly-fanon wiki): http://nentirvale.wikidot.com/world

PDFs for 4e books: Search thepiratebay for "Dungeonsand_Dragons_4th_Edition_books_update__1[Nov_2012]"

Thread starter questions: What books/extra sources would you reccomend for any given group? All of them?
Have you ever tried teaching/guiding 4e- for completely new to tabletop players, or people experienced in other editions/systems

I've just started a 4e campaign with some friends, only one of which has any experience with the edition and the others who avoided it after being told it was crap and did Pathfinder instead.

As a madman, I did at least two combats first session to throw people in the deep end learning the rules from the start. How have you brought economic principles into your game, /tg/? Have you dabbled in new systems for your non-human races? Have you ever had local economies been ruined by murderhobos dropping hundreds of thousands of GP into it?

A lot of games revolve around "get treasure, get paid" but don't go much further than that, right? And there's a big focus on income but not outgoings - you buy gear but there's rarely taxes, you rarely have to pay to feed your family, pay your kid's school fees etc.

How could anybody be that fat in a post-apocalyptic setting where people are starving?
>>

Something that always kind of bugged me in fantasy is the common currency thing. Like, sure, everyone recognises gold and uses that as their primary currency but not everyone uses "the gold coin" - they use dollars, francs, marks etc and those only really work in places that recognise the government that printed it. So if your adventurers delve into an ancient crypt and come out with coins minted in a pre-human civilisation, then those are valuable as HISTORICAL RELICS - but fucking worthless as coinage...

The game it's taken from, Red Markets, is set "mid-apocalypse" - five years after the zombies came. The people in question are Takers, who are basically mercenaries/scavengers (professional murderhobos) so they do eat well. Sometimes. If they get enough bounty on their job. That's why the other guy is going through corpses.

Actually, sorry, that's too simple.

Mutiny. Staged by rival corp who got some agents among the crew and the unions raising unrest. It has been staged for months and just erupted when PCs were on the job and the ship was shipping special cargo (weapon prototype, new alloy, etc.).
One of the options should be letting mutineers and loyal crew tear each other to pieces while PCs escape with the special cargo.

Purely hypothetically speaking, imagine a character in a vaguely modern-world setting that keeps having constant deja-vus.
Said deja-vus are usually feature completely inconsequential and irrelevant things, and yet, they usually make the character drop everything he is currently doing and think "Did another of these fucking deja-vus just happen?".
Said character is still in backstory generation phase, so the adventure hasn't begun yet and the character hasn't really done anything heroic by this point.

All of that said, what would be the, uh,...

There's some alternate-dimension fuckery going on, the character's brain is connected to their alt. reality self for Reasons. The reason why they're getting deja-vu is that the other dimension is slightly ahead, time-wise.

How multicultural and diverse is the nation or region that your game is currently taking place in?

Is it just a land of humans that all look and speak in the same fashion or is it a melting pot of many cultures and species? Is the diversity of the land (or the lack of it) depicted as a positive or a negative trait?

Ye average Forgotten Realms mish-mash of Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Halflings and the other 5e core-races. As vanilla as possible for me, babeh DM. Playing with randomly inserting a Mind-Flayer painter in the background of a scene that no one pays attention to just to see if my players are paying attention.

How could you possibly reveal it's presence without saying "there is a Mind-Flayer painter in the background"?
>>
>>47489769
Fairly diverse, and celebrated for its diversity, but not in the modern inclusive way. It's an empire, and one that whenever possible tries to incorporate the strengths of its conquered foes into its own culture. It's a very selfish diversity, concerned with whether new cultural ideas will be of use for the empire and not whether the ideas have any independent value.

202 KB,
I was playing through Shadowrun: Dragonfall and got to the section that you start to interact with Humanis (A human supremacy group). The Game clearly tried to frame them as bad guys and an analogy for white supremacists, but truth be told some of their arguments made sense to me. For instance, the longevity of elves locking humans out of certain positions in jobs. Elves have massive lifespans. It seems that by virtue of their age they are going to eventually work their way up the corporate ladder no matter how incompetent they may be. Once there, they basically stopgap other...

Justification is pretty subjective.

Look at real life "X" Power groups; "unjustified "from an outsider's perspective, but often emerge from a situation with a lot more grey areas than most are willing to admit.

Say the local Orc gang is robbing poorer humans who have to live on the wrong side of town, and a subset of the humans mob up and start beating and lynching Orcs.

This can be "Justified" from a human perspective, because the Orcs are an intractable criminal menace but as far as the Orcs are concerned; presumably prioritizing the value of an Orc's life over the change purses of a few poncy humans, would consider it unjustifiable.

The broader society's views on such occurrences are by and large irrelevant, as they are not affected by any of the factors of the feud, but they will insist on passing their flaccid judgement either way.
>>
>>47489023
It tries to frame them as that because they are.

Humanis is not above poisoning large sections of the population to kill off metas and justifies it by saying some of the humans might survive.

They shoot meta babies, bomb meta friendly schools and assassinate meta politicians. They brain wash troll and orc children, wage media and propaganda campaigns to divide humanity and will hire runners to take out any who might oppose them.

They are fucking terrorist in the setting, it is what they were...

Their arguments might make sense, but their methods are usually what make them into villains.

For example, Humanis and other human supremacist groups are linked to events like the Night of Rage where metas were forced into buildings that were then blocked up and burned down. Elves might be taking all muh jobs, but their approach to fixing that tends to be causing a much greater amount of harm than that.

This all of course depends on your view of society and politics in the real world, since they are very clearly meant to be comparable to racial supremacy groups in the real world.

What would follow in a setting if magic had become commonplace, and every commoner knew at least some magic? Cantrips like Mending, Message or Mage Hand could be invaluable for day to day living, and many other spells such as Enlarge Person, or Animate Rope could be useful to other professions such as construction and sailing. This becomes even more useful if you get away from the typical D&D spells which are only designed for use for adventurers, and start thinking about spells that would be useful for everyday work.

Why would CN care more about money than people?

Leaving people to die because you won't get paid is an evil act, anon

8 MB,
Yo, I'll be running a quest soon don't know if i'll run it on /tg/ or /qst/ , anyway I though it could be fun to roll up the faction that will be the main focus in the quest as you explore the wasteland.
I will use a creation table that a friend of mine sent me in order to create our merry band of wastelanders

Half-Lives. Doomed to short lives, Half-Lives are always in need of breeding stock. Almost half don’t make it past youth, and any that do live absolutely no longer than 40. Riddled with obvious tumours and other disfigurements, they could pass for healthy if they covered up but the coughing is always going to give them away.

Ok, so we are half-lifes. Next roll!

In settings that include adventurers as a mainstay, there's no central body to enforce such conduct.

And by their nature, adventurers operate outside the law.

Sure, that armor will make people trust and love you. You may as wear well impaled babies on your pauldrons.

Just run a game what is there to talk about here?
>>
>>47485065
Because the guy has no sweet clue what the heck it is, and it's hard to run a game for someone who doesn't know a thing about roleplaying?

Like, he literally thinks the core rulebook is a story, and once you get through that story, no more game.
