I like the way you think!
Not to sound ungrateful because I enjoyed looking at these pictures, but if a bunch of pharmacies and auto dealerships are the main signs of civilization then there are probably a lot of bears brandishing AKs while smoking krokodil starting at the outskirts of this town and going on for thousands of miles.
I forget now the Americans do not think that Russian always drunk and shoot an AK47, you now have a new fantasy fetish, crocodile everywhere lol this is funny. The population of the city of 600,000 people, I assure you that the crocodile does not consume more than 200 people in the entire city, it is a very very small% of almost zero
I wanted nothing to prove. Wanted to show you that in Siberia, too, there is life, we are people just like you.
My cousin went to Siberia for two years for school, and they wouldn't let him leave. He had to stay another two years before they would let him out of the country. I can't remember the details as to why, but it seems like some sketchy stuff.
He said it was alright there, but they lack a lot of basic stuff available in NA like peanut butter and maple syrup. The people are apparently a bit rude as well, compared to Canada.
I wanted to travel to Moscow some day but I imagine it's the same there.
It said one man from Australia who I met in his home town, he was a tourist. He said that almost all Western people think that Russia is a very scary place, there is always cold and always drunk Russian women who are raped, and then use a crocodile.
Anyone remember that website called russianrape.com or something like that? It was around for a short while in the late 90s, and the opening page was a USSR-era apartment block with crosshairs roving around. All the porn videos were fake rape scenes with everyone wearing stereotypical Russian clothes.
It was one of the funniest porn sites ever, I wish they had survived.
>muh gangland-style murders of major political figures on the streets of the capital city
Sure, any reasonable concerns about the sanity of your government is an American plot to turn your children into homosexuals
>this is what Russians ACTUALLY believe!
I think since there is still not as many people who travel in Russia outside major cities westerners especially Americans have a distorted view of life in Russia because all we are shown in our media is the backwoods depressing places in Russia where people drink a lot and use drugs and most people think that that is all of Russia. Russia has it's problems but western media definitely doesn't care to paint it in the best light.
I went from Saint Petersburg to Vladivostok, and stayed in Novosibirsk, Irkutsk and Lake Baikal. It was very intense because nobody could speak anything besides russian, and I can't speak 5 words in russian and had to cross this huge country in a few weeks, alone. Buying the train tickets only using gestures and staying in kupe with 3 drunk russians in their 50's was quite an experience. And I still made a lot of friends, got girls, felt in love, got drunk almost every night and russian people were very nice to me. I felt like I was in another planet, and facing -30 degrees celsius was a serious problem for me, coming from a warm country.
And yes many russian people got a serious problem with alcohol, the media is right at least in this point.
Well security was ok, specially for someone from the 3rd world like me. But for 2 or 3 times I think some drunk guys were trying to put up a fight with me but somehow they became my friends after realizing I had no idea what they were saying. It took 25 days. The girls could speak a few sentences in english were my first choice, but there was this time I made out with this girl only with google translate at a bar in Novosibirsk
I've seen and even talked for about 30 mins or more with Brazilian guy in August 2014 in Kazan, lol
He was from Belo Horizonte. And there was another guy from Santiago(Chilie), but they're not freinds, they just met in hotel.
it was in a kitchen in a hotel
According to statistics, alcohol consumption per person in the city of Irkutsk, two times less than in England.
We most prefer Japanese cars because they are cheap and reliable. We still have a lot in selling Ford cars, I think that in 2013 Ford Focus was the best-selling, but now when the ruble against the dollar has fallen twice before $ 1 = 33 rubles now $ 1 = 63 rubles think American and European cars will be very expensive.
OP, thanks for the little tour. I doubt I'll get the chance, as a visa-needing american, and the current political climate...not going to happen for a long time, I'm sure.
My impressions? In case you are interested? It all looks very upscale and new. I'm guessing there is a lot of new money in this town, maybe from oil worker jobs? Not sure what is the draw of money. It reminds me of some of the suburbia of reykjavik or even dublin, where there was a job boom and new construction all within a similar time frame. It also has a hint of arlington VA, high income multifamily apartment buildings near metro stations. I find them a turnoff actually, being in a building with hundreds of people. It always seems a bit govt housing to be that large, imho.
As a well traveled person, it was appreciated by me to see your pics, but it sure look cold in some of them! Brrr.
Next time, show me the inside of the orthodox church. I love the icons and screens near the altar of the russian churches.
I do not know why, but I was very interested to read your impressions, thank you. We have in large petrochemical plant, a large aircraft factory that produces military aircraft, we have near Irkutsk start a new birthplace of gas which will be exported to China, this is a very large project, you may have heard, we still have cheap electricity thanks to the dam, very very much forest, ocean timber which is a huge demand, but unfortunately our government does not allow to export a lot of wood. All criticize Putin, but I see tremendous changes in our city over the past 15 years. Here's another example, I do not work for a long time in the service station and I had access to information about income and I want to tell you that this car workshop for 8 cars earned $ 100,000 a month, I could not believe the beginning and counted and it turned out that I rights was $ 100,000 per month. In Russia not long ago and therefore allowed the business to compete with Russian business is very easy, because we have as yet no business culture, such as in America, I always thought that any American company can easily earn in Russia is very good money, but unfortunately you do not know about it. What sways the Russian Orthodox Church, I certainly will do photos, we have a lot of old beautiful churches, almost all of them for 150-300 years.
There is a difference, but not big and only on products that are imported from other countries, I think that our government specifically lowered the ruble, for whatever goods produced in Russia had more advantages.
I would like to bring my Australian dollars to Russia but the visa process is too much of a pain in the ass.
This needs to change.
Instead I will go to Georgia where there is no requirement.
This is a safe for work board.
This is a travel board.
This isn't a voyeurism photographs board, nor is it fashion, nor should you let other people tell you what pictures to take. Just knock it off and end your thread now. Creep.
