It's funny how people think this list is pretentious. Most of those are hardly obscure.
I don't even like movies anymore I come here for the memes.

I never had the opportunity to watch any of them. I'm 100% against pirating so not every movie I want to watch or get reccomended is at my disposal.
I don't have my 3x3 on my phone, so let's see if I can remember them.

Pete Hothead (1952)
Snakes on a Plane (2006)
The Survivors (1983)
Crash (2004)
About 6 or 7 of them are on Hulu+. Maybe 2 of them are on netflix. Even YouTube has some of them.
>I'm 100% against pirating
in a world where theaters only play recent releases the only way to see the majority of films is to pirate them
That should be: The Rules of the Game.
jesus christ you're fucking pathetic
What? Between Redbox, Amazon Instant, buying BluRays and my local library I can see just about anything with very little pirating.
in terms of recent releases, sure. however to see the majority of films ever made there's now way you could do that and pay for all of them
not really. Drop Redbox and pick up Hulu+. After you watch all the Criterion movies drop Hulu+ and pick up Fandor.
I live in buttfuck nowhere.
The only time I'm able to see anything like that Is when I'm traveling. And it's not very often.

how pleb am I?

I know it may not seem it since I know my list is super well known, but how do people manage to familiarize themselves with so many movies? Is this not really the case and it's all just subjective? I watch 1-3 movies a day sometimes more and half the time I've never heard of anyone's favorites. I've only heard of 2 on that list.
No order, except Chunking Express, that's my favorite so far

Chunking Express
Inside Llewyn Davis
The Royal Tenenbaums
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
The Seventh Seal
Frances Ha
The Thin Red Line
Dr. Strangelove

I had a lot of trouble picking between Chungking Express and Fallen Angels
Watch more films, pleb.
You have about the same amount of good and bad.

Network & Magnolia are great movies.
>>55609010 here, honestly just learn more about directors than just films. By your list, you're pretty pleb, and that's fine because you'll see more films and your taste will grow. But do more research into directors, and even cinematographers. Take all the films you don't know, and add to your watchlist or whatever. Start to see the interconnectivity of film: oh this person was inspired by this person so I should check them out
whenever I find a director I enjoy I generally watch everything they've done. How do I know who inspired who? I've heard Bergman inspired PTA and he's probably my favorite director so I've been meaning to give him a look. I know a lot of directors I like were inspired by Godard but reading about Godard, wow does he sound like a pretentious ass

Not even Baumbachs best film (Greenberg)

And Life Aquatic is better than Tenenbaums IMO
Yeah, not that big on Godard either. By reading and researching a director, you would probably find their masters. (imo, I know there will be disagreements) but a good into of directors who have good accessibility would be: Robert Bresson (Diary of a Country Priest, Au hasard Balthazar, A Man Escaped),
Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Ikiru, The Hidden Fortress, which inspired Lucas' Star Wars and you'll see plenty of similarities)
Bergman (Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, he has a bunch)
Tarkovsky (Solaris, Stalker, Zerkalo)
And idk, Welles, Ozu, Renoir, Tati, Antonioni, Mizoguchi, Fellini. Just do your research
spot the imdbkids
thanks, a surprising amount of those movies/directors are on my watchlist. I guess I just spend a lot of time checking out random movies that sound interesting to me from no names (or at least no names to me) like Robot & Frank or Womb

Damn it, was thinking just to put movies I rated highest on IMDb, but after all these years I don't know if I would watch them again would they keep those high grades. And another thing, what to rate higher: a movie that is artistically better (in my own opinion, of course) or the one which glued to me the most even though it is objectively mediocre in craftsmanship.

You have at least 4 anime movies, two of which are the same fuckin thing, an entire trilogy, and 3 movies that have come out in the the last god damn year.
Having 1-2 anime movies on your top ten is alright but god man, you need to watch a few more pieces from farther back than 2003 that isn't anime.
either you're a full blown weeb, 10 year old, or this
some of you guys need to cool your jets, there's more movies to watch from the last 15 years than any of you will ever have time to see, having a list limited to newer stuff is nothing to be ashamed of.

Also I'm saving this thread and watching every single movie I haven't heard of that is either on what appears to me to be a relatively obscure list or that has a few movies I think are top ten worthy so I can be patrician like you guys

>You have at least 4 anime movies, two of which are the same fuckin thing,

End of Evangelion and Rebuild 2.22 aren't the same at all. And they are the best shit ever.

> an entire trilogy

Ok, I only added the Matrix trilogy to free up a space- I didn't want to list the 1st 2 matrix movies without the 3rd especially when the films are so very closely tied.

>3 movies that have come out in the the last god damn year.

Man of Steel is amazing- easily my favorite capeshit.
After watching Edge of Tomorrow I actually went back and read the light novel it was based on- turns out that the light novel was shit and the director/writers were able to use a very simple premise to create a rather splendid film.
Interstellar is a marvel...its unique draw between gravity, love, space exploration, and relativity were exceptional and nolan brought them all together well.

Perfect Blue, Ninja Scroll, and Ghost in the Shell all represent the best of their respective genre. They are all great films.

This is why top 10 movie lists are so problematic- there are many that share in quality, some that aren't comparable, and others that deserves mentioning. Alien, Terminator, Blade Runner, No Country for Old Men, Old Boy, Rush Hour, Austin Powers: the Spy Who Shagged Me, a japanese film called Shiki-Jitsu (The Ritual) are all great films deserving to be on my top 10. However, they cannot fit into those slots.

To be honest, I ranked all these movies based on how many times I've endeavored to watch them over their artistic merits. These are the films I have most enjoyed watching.
