>>254335439 >less irritating bullshit bullshit, Pokemon had just as much frustrating shit that "people in the know" managed to avoid. Unless you explore you're not going to get FLASH or FLY and without those the game becomes one hell of a chore.
But Gen 1 is broken as fuck. Almost nothing really works as it should. How people feel it was a good game is still shocking. Now Gen 2 I can understand. Since they fixed what was so fucking horrible broken.
>>254335245 One series sold over 30 million copies while the other sold?
Historically Pokemon Red/Blue aren't just a success but they are two of vidya's most prized possessions. Especially in regards to the RPG genre. Since they are still the best selling RPG's to date and very few other RPG's have sold even half that.
And besides it's gen fucking one faggots. Of course it rapes.
>>254338150 the brokenness of pokemon doesn't really damage the game significantly. It's still an effective game that delivers itself well enough. they are flaws, and they were fortunately fixed, but they don't ruin the game at all. Competitive pokemon players seem to live in a vacuum where any small element of pokemon is off the entire game is ruined.
they're well made games. but earthbound is a far better game, no doubt.
>>254338820 I never specifically stated that. I did however say that pokemon R/B are historically important games for all of vidya. Just like Super Mario Brothers was. Nintendo in fact would arguably be in a much worst position had it not been for R/B. So take your cancerous hatred elsewhere faggot. Do you see Mario fans shit on Super Mario Bros all the time like you modern pokeautists do? No because they respect the older games in their favorite series. Like most fanbases do.
>>254339531 Well then MGS1 or any other series that has been great in /v/'s eyes. Only pokeshits on this board get this upset at anyone proclaiming their love for gen1. Which my post wasn't even really about.
Playing Earthbound for the first time thanks to Club Nintendo, and I'm a few hours in. While it's not really fair to judge a game that I haven't finished, at this point I would say Pokemon.
Earthbound, thus far, comes across as a fun and quirky game bogged down by a lot of bad gameplay choices on the part of the developer that make a lot of simple tasks feel extremely tedious. The inventory system is the worst offender, as I don't like to play games with guides and the game shoves far too many nonconsumable items in your face that you're never sure if you'll need again or not. This makes me afraid to store them in fear of having to go ALL the way back to retrieve them in order to progress, or downright nervous that I'll miss an important call on the cellphone, etc.
This problem is amplified by the fact that certain enemies hit pretty damn hard even if you completely grind out the area before them, and I rarely have enough healing to go around.
It"s a good game, and I'm liking it, but I feel like Pokemon was more streamlined and simple. In the case of a JRPG in that vein, I'd say that helps Pokemon get an edge over EB despite having it's own problems.
Also, running away from battles is god damn worthless in EB. Don't even know why they have that feature.
>>254340006 And as I said, only you degenerate manchildren autistic shit sacks go to these lengths to dis the first game in your favorite series that started it all. I really think it's just a sing of severe ass pain coming from you guys. Your just pissed that pokemon will never be as big as it was at the prime of it's popularity which was gen1 to early gen2. Before retarded edgy fags like you likely jumped to yugioh before jumping back on the pokemon bandwagon when that yugayoh shit finally died. God that yugioh was so trash.
>>254339826 Samefriend here. Another good example of what I'm talking about is that god damn Mushroom status effect. Just an example of another minor little quirk of many that makes Earthbound slightly annoying to play. A status that must be removed via NPC, even giving you a reward to compensate might seem fair enough at first. However, why the flying fuck would they make something that crippling into a MANDATORY chore. Your controls are perma fucked, you can't ride the bike, and you have to drop everything to go find a doctor NPC. It's obnoxious, and should have been a fun optional gag instead of a tedious chore that breaks the game's pace.
>>254339826 >Also, running away from battles is god damn worthless in EB. Don't even know why they have that feature. You can eat skip sandwiches (sell them at most drugstores) and it makes you run faster and easier to avoid enemies. also some more powerful enemies are slower making it easier to avoid.
>>254340812 I always wonder if people like you either never really played Pokemon, have forgotten what it was actually like or are just a bit dim. Same with people who literally say all 151 Pokemon were great.
I knew gen 1 was broken WHEN I was a kid, and so did all of my friends. It was well known even on the playground that the game was incredibly buggy and just generally imbalanced. Broken ghosts, imbalanced as shit types, crits, etc. Still enjoyed it, of course, but G/S/C were a breath of fresh air, mechanically.
>>254341340 If it's vague it has no importance to continue the plot. The teddy bear is simply a battle technique to distract the enemies by them hitting the teddy instead of your team. If it's something you really do need the game will make it clear.
So because you played casually, you assume everyone played casually? Because that's just wrong. It wasn't as popular as it was now but there were local competitive scenes. The years when Tauros, Mewtwo, and Electrode ruled the Metagame.
Literally everyone at my school was more concerned with trading and simply enjoying the game for what it was. Eventually people started to really love collecting the cards. Then eventually sometime in middle school most people just didn't give a fuck about pokemon somewhere around gen2. I remember a few people (myself included) did buy and play gen3 but at that point it was more just as a nice little nostalgia play for almost everyone I knew who played it up until that point.
For some damn reason somehow somewhere, Nintendo as one anon said started to heavily pander to you few retards that just started getting super pokemon obsessed and eventually started playing more of it's vs then ever. No one I knew seriously cared that much. Now all what I hear from the new pokemon is muh balance, muh competitiveness, muh precious new gen that improves that last shitty gen.
I have nothing more to say to you neckbeards. Fucking grow up and understand it's okay for people to like the older games. No one is bashing your precious tourney fagging. It's always you fags that bring the shit up and it's annoying. So no most people weren't obnoxiously tourney fagging with pokemon like they do now.
>>254342225 >>254342324 This may have been the case before they went full retard with these modern cards. Have you guys seen some of that shit? 200 damage attacks, multiple energy card types needed, 300 HP, etc. Shit got ridiculous as fuck.
The point of the game was the battle and trade with your friends and rivals. Of course they're going to make the competitive aspect a big thing in later games given how popular it got. You strike me as that kid who wanted to win with his bros but got crushed by everyone else at school from how hard you're whining about this.
>>254342804 I only play pokemon TCG 2 on the emulator. Nobody that I know still plays the card game. I only know one guy who plays card games, he plays Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic competitively but he can't stand pokemon TCG for whatever reason.
>>254342964 >Card games where you have to collect in order to win are trash by definition. I'd rather spend $100 once than spend $40 or however much it is on pokemon X, THEN have to waste 500 hours before I'm allowed to play the game.
>>254342654 Every game has gotten worst anon. Supposedly gen six fixes some of the grind but it started to get ridiculously cancerous with the IV's and EV's. It's so bad that faggots actually sell pokemon like it's some sort of black market shit. Also a lot of faggots use hacks to gain competitive advantages.
You people thought souls fans were bad? Nobody has shit on tourney fagging manchildren and their pokemon.
>>254338717 >sales I love Pokemon, but you do realise Earthbound was never released outside of the US and Japan right? Pokemon was sold the world over, Earthbound was sold in two countries. Which reminds me, I have my first free £5 credit on the WiiU, time to try Earthbound for the first time.
>>254343043 I can tell you irrelevant shitposter, and the only thing that matters is the gameplay??? as if, maybe get some fucking taste and realize games are the sum of their parts not just one aspect
>he plays doom for the game play and not for the level design, the mechanics, the visuals, the sound, the music
you insipid nigger you probably don't even realize how all of these things work together, and when you remove one you have a shell of what's left you fucking faghat
get some perspective and learn a thing or two about game design, retard
They both have simplistic gameplay that has been vastly improved upon by it's predecessors. They both excel greatly due to non-game stuff. Earthbound excels much more and is one of the most mature games there is, so I guess that.
You should've done Mother 3 vs. R/S or even B/W, OP. That would've been a much better discussion.
>>254342912 And you fags imply that the vs was some huge thing like it is now. The battling wasn't anywhere near what it is now and to even whine about it like YOU did is stupid. Just get over it. Gen1's battling wasn't even half as important to the game as it is now thanks to you neckbeards. It never needed to be any ways. Nintendo/Gamefreak were trying to sell kids a new game idea that was never really tried before.
I think we can all agree that these games are similar in some ways. But if you look at each element of the gameplay and compare them side by side, Earthbound is better in every way.
Pokemon is way too fucking slow, even if you put all the text speeds on max, etc. Pokemon is also significantly easier. Having not played Pokemon Red or Earthbound in a few years, I know for a fact that I could play through Pokemon Red without losing a single time. But in Earthbound it's perfectly possible to die. Earthbound also has a cooler world to explore, better secrets, better characters / story, etc.
Just about the only advantage pokemon has over Earthbound is better team customization.
>>254343267 So you complain that the decks are too cookie cutter but then you complain that there are ways of countering them. Also how do you counter the anti-meta decks? Oh yeah by making a new kind of deck.
>>254343193 >shitposter Good argument. Everyone who disagrees with you is a shitposter >he plays doom for the game play and not for the level design, the mechanics. This belongs to the aspect that is called "gameplay".Gameplay is how the game plays (durr). >you probably don't even realize how all of these things work together A game whose only selling point is gameplay can still be good, a game whose only selling point is the story will always be a wannabe movie. >get some perspective and learn a thing or two about game design, retard Yeah, I'm sure you know a lot about game design. Would you please enlight us?
>>254343918 >Good argument. Everyone who disagrees with you is a shitposter when you have irrelevant, shitty contributions you're a shitposter
>This belongs to the aspect that is called "gameplay".Gameplay is how the game plays (durr). everything about a game defines how it plays genius
>A game whose only selling point is gameplay can still be good, a game whose only selling point is the story will always be a wannabe movie. tetris is great but there's also great music, distinctive visuals (very important to the game play!!! GENIUS).
>Yeah, I'm sure you know a lot about game design. Would you please enlight us? sure attend my courses at digipen
>>254344048 >sure attend my courses at digipen Not him but in case you're not kidding, you have the wrong idea of gameplay. Gameplay specifically refers to the physics / mechanics of the game, I.E. the speed of a character, how high they can jump, their attack power, etc.
What you're referring to is the overall quality of the game. By your logic, if someone told me that the gameplay is bad in a certain game, I must also assume that it has a bad soundtrack, and a bad story.
Also, I didn't read the whole conversation but you seem to be implying that said the music in either pokemon or earthbound wasn't good, which is completely false.
>>254344048 Your orthography and syntax are fucking horrible, which leads me to the belief that I'm arguing with some kid, or that this is some poor bait. Remind me, why am I even giving attention to you?
>>254344345 game play is a meaningless term that I've been actively trying to debunk because of how poorly it encapsulates anything specific about criticism of games.
the conversation was about how earthbound has bad game play (by which I assume he meant combat and moving around the world??) when the point is that combat is serviceable in earthbound and moving around the world feels appropriate and good enough and there are other more important things in earthbound
>>254344609 objectively speaking the best level of all time is the horde of zendar, but moonside is a great part of earthbound that really focuses on the humor of it all. It plays with both the themes of the game, hostility and friendliness quite well by putting it all in a weird perspective of bizarre dialog and geometry.
it's a really weird part of the game, and to a lot of people (people who never played the game) what makes the game special is the quirkiness and the weird bits, which is why it might stand out
but for me the very end of the game is the best part.
>>254345057 Oh no, a walking talking retard who has no contributions to make to a thread won't take me seriously. god forbid.
>>254335245 Pokémon. Earthbound is basically, Monster Quest with Peanuts characters. Fans of Earthbound try to be special snowflakes among nintendo fans, by liking a nintendo game which is too obscure to be popular, but not too obscure to be completely unknown.
>>254347357 It's not important, and you're the only one stressing it instead of actually looking at the content of the posts. I'm not giving a presentation, I'm talking with people.
You learn your shit and start talking about fucking video games. Now if you want to try re-engaging in the conversation we were having about game play and why it's a retarded term to use at all, you're welcome to. Or you can continue to run around in circles and act like the way I say what I say matters, when it is entirely irrelevant and my points are entirely clear.
>>254347550 I don't give a shit about your take on game design, though. Let's just end this conversation here, without me calling you out on why gameplay isn't a "meaningless term". I have better things to do, like playing Super Metroid for the first time.
It's no wonder why you've failed to engage anyone in this thread meaningfully and have only danced around actually discussing your perspective on why the game play in earthbound is shit. You can't prove a fucking thing and it's obvious you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. You're a waste of bandwidth and cpu cycles on 4chan, and on the internet as a whole.
>>254347939 leave you little bitch, you can't even back up what you say.
I like how no one is mentioning the prime reason why earthbound is much better, the random encounters are like chrono trigger, you can avoid them. the main villian piggy is god damn clever and the final boss, music, and overall themes stay with you including the enemies. combat is great once you level up and get good equips.
>>254348425 the rolling hp system is really fun too, and creates a really interesting dynamic of subverting hp loss with healing or finishing battle. I think mother 3 really nailed rolling hp by slowing down the ticker tho.
I do love how every place is extremely hostile to you until you banish giygas' influence from it, then everyone is friendly and sweet to you. That's one of the best things about the game, how there's always hints of what there was before Giygas' influence, then after you clean up eagleland, you get to the cliff that time forgot and that wicked haunting horn track plays. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXLwI9uAUws
To me, the distant brass in the song creates this really distinct division of where you're about to head to. The least friendly and coldest place in the game. Where there's no music. It's just howling and ambiance, it's terrifying. Everything is hostile, everything warm is replaced with cold rock, steel, and even your bodies are replaced with clanking cheese-grater metal bodies. The only thing that sticks out is Ness' hat. It's just great.
Then even the fleshy interior of Giygas' joint is still stark and cold, alienating and hostile, everything about it is dangerous.
What really kicks me in the ass is when you're fighting the big fetus himself and the only way to kill him is by praying. I seriously hope anyone who hasn't played the game puts in their name when they are asked to. That shit hits hard. Hit me even more so, because I played it on a CRT and saw my reflection.
>>254348997 >watching the credits and seeing the entire cast of Earthbound >watching the second credits with all the actual designers whilst looking at your photos >seeing your name at the end of the credits I don't think any game will come close, it's a better experience than Mother 3 even though technically Mother 3 has the better story and gameplay.
>>254350591 I kinda what they were thinking as far as visuals for giygas goes. Like, most every enemy in the game there's a clear influence in its design buy giygas is at best a tortured face swirling/being torn into darkness
at worst it's a repeating pattern of a fetus being stretched and injected with static imagery
*worst is not indictive of quality but rather of its appearance
