I'm writing a female main character for an RPG I'm making for story reasons involving religious themes.
Out of curiosity, since /v/ is so knowledgeable about good characters in video games, what do you guys think a female MC in a game should have to be likable?
The general question is:
what does a CHARACTER need to be likable? Whether it's male or female doesn't matter.
Generally: can I identify myself with the character? Does he/she act like I would in a similar situation? (required your RPG is a more linear story)
Personally I prefer a character who can take a joke and is able to laugh... I'm sick and tired of all these broody "the world hates me" types.
for her not to be an angry bitch all the time
make her bro man.
It's not in RPG Maker though and we already know how the character should be, I was just wondering how /v/ likes one since it's such a hot topic recently with women trying to be more involved with games.
just write it as a person in your setting.
Where does she come from, what kind of place is it?
What about her parents or upbringing would influence her as the person she is now?
Does this person have any passions, hobbies, or distinguishing traits?
and once you have that together, you easily have the fundamentals for a good and memorable character. This is my thought process as a DM for pen and papers when I make NPCs, I get paid to DM, I'd like to think im decent enough at presenting a story.
Alright make her a huge slut she wears scanidly clad clothes and has big tits, she only says "let me suck your handsome dick"
Just make her a heroine with a personality you silly fuck, we don't hate female characters or we wouldn't like shit games like neptune, atelier, etc
source on that pic?
just make her a normal person, don't make her personality based on the fact that she's a woman. But I'm not a writer, so I know fuck all about that kind of stuff. I just make triangles look pretty.
>What should an MC have to be likeable?
Make sure you're writing a good character first and foremost; if the MC would be hateable as a dude then people still won't like it if it's a girl.
Her gender doesn't have to be a part of her character, but if it is then handle it well and don't go overboard. Don't make her a bitch, don't make it about girl power, don't hit us over the head with anything - even if no one says it to you like an ungrateful ass, we WILL notice the subtle touches. She doesn't have to be sexy either; if the game is good then the internet will care enough about her to make good porn of the game anyway.
Let her have her badass heroic moments, have her be a bro to her party and NPCs, etc. Basically, what do we like in a main character?
Good luck, OP.
>fictional religion based on Christianity
At least try to be creative.
>what do you guys think a female MC in a game should have to be likable
Depends if the MC is supposed to be a good or bad person.
If you're making a heroine don't make her have a shit attitude. But with the picture you posted you already seem set to make an annoying arrogant cunt, like the female equivalent of Donte.
So what, based on Islamic faiths then? Or Hinduism?
We only took on a core structure, a lot of things are still different from actual Christianity but values are mostly the same.
It's hard to be original nowadays since there are already so many ideas out there but that won't excuse us from bad writing if you see it that way. Sorry.
I'll second what this anon says. Christianity is a familiar comfort zone to work with, and your game isn't bad because you take inspiration from it. But try to take at least a few minutes to research maybe one other religion for aesthetic purposes.
That said, you know the source material better than some anon on the internet; maybe your idea is different enough from Christianity that it will be memorable. Fingers crossed.
The exposure to something that I honestly didn't know much about is why I loved Digital Devil Saga so much. Foreign religions are fucking insane when you dig into them.
Why do you think people like Elder Scrolls lore so much? It's batshit insane and totally divorced from what we're familiar with.
certain interests and passions and fears
a certain personality type
depending on how serious you want to get you might want to implement a light psychological problem here and there.
has a unique expression or word that is used sometimes. but not omg you rock ~desu after every sentence
NO: girly stuff that is actually just society's roles being enforced on girls: I.e.: girls being insecure about their clothing and needing to ask for approval on it.
taking herself too seriously
lusting after hot guys like a /v/irgin lusts after girls
more important than any other. don't try to appeal to different kinds of people. if she is a unique character i dont care if she is a nigger with a huge ass and big momma attitude.
Turtle Fish Paint or Karei or something like that, I keep forgetting what he actually goes by
Only telling you this because the works are magnificent and everyone should see them.
It's comfortable to work with mostly and it's actually pretty easy to change around, it's very simple.
Like I said, the core concept behind the religion is similar but some of it is pretty different.
Sorry but Hinduism doesn't work with the direction we want the story to go.
I'll do some research on that later.
Contrary to what our shitposting implies, we don't actually hate female MCs or need them to be sexy. If the plot or gameplay is flawed then people might shitpost about your character because they might see the female MC as a crutch to draw favour from SJWs, even if that's not what you mean.
>Sorry but Hinduism doesn't work with the direction we want the story to go.
You're missing the point, dumbass. It doesn't matter if it's Hindiusm, Shintoism, or Buddhism. I live in a culture that's been influenced by Christianity for centuries, give me some new ideas instead of the same rehashed shit about "muh angels, muh demons, muh sacraments".
Unless you're doing the Old Testament, in which case, it's slightly more acceptable.
Raised by a single dad who is a retired legendary adventurer but not a fatass, so she has a lot of masculine habits and cocky confidence but fails to
make a lot of friends at the academy she's in.During the events of the game, she tries to act tough like her dad used to be but generally falls flat on her face because she doesn't have the experience. I won't talk much else since it's a little spoilery.
4 party members, each are planned to manage wildly differently from each other. Dungeons are designed around elevation and various tools are required to navigate properly. Story starts with a murder of one of four heroes that was part of a prophecy. I don't really wanna get much into it since we're barely starting here.
If you're developing an RPG, leave the character development to the player.
Pre-defined MCs belong in other genres but RPGs.
You're developing a fucking video game, you're not writing a book. If you want to force your ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL upon the player, do it using a side-character, a party member or whatever, but leave your hands off the main character.
>what do you guys think a female MC in a game should have to be likable?
She should know her limits.
She should be pragmatic when the situation demands victory
She should accept the duality of men and women
She should have a few feminine interests and they shouldn't be something she's ashamed of
She shouldn't be insulted when offered help or being escorted
She should be well receptive of any opportunity to talk to others and get closer to her friends.
She shouldn't have a special bloodline or something that makes her superior to the a regular human. If you must give her a special skill, make her discover it through effort and dedication.
>a female MC in a game should have to be likable
This is subjective but what I generally like is when a female character isn't defined by her having tits and vagina. Being competent is also a plus but I really liked that slut in Expeditions Conquistador that kept drinking muddy water and was usually on a sick bed because of it. She was hilarious.
what's wrong anon? Don't like erotic comic books?
He should have said so then. Given that he didn't chances are he either wanted to incite that sort of debate or he doesn't know what he's talking about and is thus not in the position of developing games in the first place.
I just think that if you're writing your female characters informed only from hentai comics, they're going to be shit.
>accept the duality between men and women
why does this even have to come up in game? That seems sort of silly and shoe-horned.
Honestly, despite everyone telling you that the character should just be a character, if you follow that rule then you might as well have made her a nigga in the first place.
No, we don't want skrong wuhman #2721, but if the only thing setting your female character apart from a male one is tits, then the character is a waste. Find a happy medium between generally likeable character and admirable traits that are customary between women.
OP here, why is it important for me to define whether it's a WRPG or a JRPG? You guys still have arguments over what Dark Souls is. It's still an RPG in the end, just with different core mechanics. I like both sides equally.
It's JRPG inspired.
One of the aspects of a likable MC is that he should be capable but not too capable or incompetent. If faced with a wall he is supposed to overcome but due to plot reasons, cannot, he shouldn't just state "I can't get over this wall", triggering a flag that makes another character to cause him to pass the wall. He should try to get over the wall, deduce that he can't do it alone or without a certain item or person and set on from there.
*cuts the wall with Demon Blade Murasamamasa*
*obliterates the pieces with the Eternal Hellfire of the Universe's Genesis*
"Heh, only too easy."
*Hits a table with his leg*
*A pizza slice falls on his hand*
approach is doomed to fail, too.
Male and female don't mean jack shit unless you mean to make things like ejaculation and menstruation a central plot point.
In my opinion the most important part of writing an interesting female character is that they have an actual goal motivating them that doesn't revolve around romance.
That doesn't mean they can't ever like a guy or flirt or fall in love, just that they always remember their mission (whatever it may be) is more important.
>why is it important for me to define whether it's a WRPG or a JRPG?
That's a silly question.
Why would it be important to define whether you're developing a driving simulation or a flight simulator? Because different people are interested in different things and if you don't want to give people false expectations you should tell them what you're going to develop.
>You guys still have arguments over what Dark Souls is.
And rightfully so.
>It's still an RPG in the end, just with different core mechanics.
That's the whole point. "RPG" is a non-term. It says nothing about your game. It could be anything from Diablo 2 to Jagged Alliance or Deus Ex.
>It's JRPG inspired.
Then it would have been helpful to include that in the OP.
If the player is given no opportunity to define his character then he's not role "playing" but role "watching".
Besides, Torment is a game with a character whose personality is completely defined by the player and it's generally acclaimed for its storytelling, so your claims are complete nonsense.
And I've told you: if you're going to develop an RPG, leave your hands off the main character because he/she belongs to the player.
In a JRPG things are different of course, but you didn't say that you're going to develop a JRPG.
Make it about female sexuality being oppressed by religion, and the struggle to set what is human free from the backward thinking caused by fear and hate.
Inquisition, cardinals, pope figure, etc, are mandatory enemies and should be portrayed in realistic manner.
It's not about inserting yourself but rather creating a character and playing his role. When I make a character in proper RPGs, I don't do shit that makes sense to me but to the character I'm playing.
Combine Christianity and budhism. The overal structure is the same as Catholocism but heaven is different. Christians believe Heaven is a mystical place where a lifetime of work earns you an eternity of paradise. Budhists believe that wants and desires are shackles and casting them off is enlightenment and the unenlightened are reborn. Make it so heaven is actualy the worthy returning to god and being eaten by him. Inside god they experience such profound pleasure that all the experiences in their lifetime mean nothing to them and they lose their sense of self thus effectively being erased from existence. Hell is a hundred years of torture before getting mind wiped and being reborn to try again.
It'd be the biggest mindfuck to find out that being bad has an arguably better outcome than being good. The church officials keep the whole being eaten by god part underwraps from the peasants and are secretly corrupt to ensure they're reborn.
Women generally don't have likable personalities, so this is going to be tough.
Make her cool as pic related. Badass without really trying to reflect the gender the character is and just having a good personality.
>since it's such a hot topic recently with women trying to be more involved with games.
Don't pander to SJWs, man. You can't ever please them unless your entire cast consists of transethnic non-binary polysexual genderfluid minorities that actively fight against the evil cis white patriarchy.
The most important for me in a character is that their actions and motivations make sense without being too convoluted. Gender is essentially a non-issue here.
>I'm writing a female character
Just write a character OP. She doesn't have to talk about her vagina or lust for cocks to remind us that she's female.
>I never said I was pandering to SJWs.
I'm not saying you did, I'm saying it's something you should avoid i.e. stop paying attention to people crying about muh female characters and muh equal representation over the internet.
Gaian, gender is a non-issue here.
How exactly comes your imagination into play then? A lesbian is per definitionem not interested in you as a potential partner. She's interested in women and you're not a woman. What's the whole point?
WRITE A GOOD MALE CHARACTER
NAME HIM ALICE AND GIVE HIM TITS AND A VAGOO
A LIKEABLE, STRONG INDEPENDENT FEMALE MAIN CHARACTER
OH, AND DON'T GIVE HIM A MALE LOVE INTEREST TO FAWN OVER. MOST OF YOUR PLAYERS ARE MALE AND THEY'LL SELF INSERT IN THE MC, SO HAVING A BIG HANDSOME MALE THEY FAWN OVER IS A BIT TOO /fit/ FOR THE AVERAGE /v/IRGIN
INSTEAD GIVE ALICE AN ADOPTED LITTLE BROTHER SHE CAN /ss/ WITH. THE KID COULD BE THE MAIN HEALER OR SOMETHING, SHIT I DON'T KNOW.
ALL I KNOW IS THAT FUCKING EVERYONE LIKES /ss/
I've heard something similar to this, only it involved a gnostic element of a Demiurge.
Obviously the difference being once you know the truth the Demiurge doesn't seem like such a bad deity when the other god wants to incorporate you into themselves.
>"You're supposed to self-insert as the girl".
I can get that - in case we're dealing with some guy with gender identity issues who actually wishes he was the little girl. But those are a tiny minority. I can't imagine all the guys who like lesbian porn to have these sorts of issues.
>what do you guys think a female MC in a game should have to be likable?
What ingredients should you have if you want to make good food?
It depends on what kind of character you want.
It's basically just having a pair of lusty faces, tits, pussy to look at over one. Plus a lot of male/female hentai is just some fat guy or an asshole raping the woman until they become addicted to their cock. It gets dull especially if the male character is unlikeable.
Question OP, so what's the magic situation?
Can clergy or holy individuals harness the power of not-Jesus to cast lightning? Is there forbidden magic in the world and if so from what power does that come from?
Is it basically Church = anti-magic like a lot of rpg typically go?
>Gaming can be a storytelling medium.
ITT: faggots convince themselves that heavy rain is the same "thing" as tetris
Yeah, but there's a difference between seeing girls making out and them being defined as lesbians. The latter rules out you as a potential lover, even in your fantasy.
Also, it seems quite odd to me for people to have an aversion to penises. In most cases, the male character doesn't take a prominent position in male oriented porn. His face is rarely shown, the angles are chosen so that the girl is being focussed. He's hardly more than a cock for the viewer to imagine himself in his position.
Refer to what I wrote above. To me it seems like those who like lesbian porn too much focus too much on the male character.
Make her like Kaine.
She can be as hot as you want, but don't have her making glamour model poses every minute.
A dick is optional
Play Shikkoku no Sharnoth and Trails in the Sky, OP. That's how you make likable female protagonists.
Basically. Write her like she was a dude. Then just change the "he" to "she".
>download some Oblivion porn mod since I was curious
Oh god. I was not prepared for such horror. It's like a 40 year old pretending to be a girl in a chat room who also browse Deviant Art.
Meh, in any case I don't have an aversion to straight hentai, hell 9/10 I'll read/watch straight over lesbian porn. In fact my favorite part most of the time is a guy cumming inside.
I guess I'm not bothered by a missing male component because most of my focus is on the woman's reaction.
>The latter rules out you as a potential lover, even in your fantasy.
Most hentai and porn I don't think about the character beyond that fap session. However for characters I care more about I do agree that having them be a lesbian bothers me because you lose those lover fantasies.
Pic is my personal example, it took 3 movies but it finally got through my dense head that she's a single minded lesbian and would never love me ;_;
>Personality fits with her past
>Powerful, but still gets her shit wrecked when she gets overconfident
>People call her out on her bullshit (the way she dresses, her being a raging cunt early on,
slaughtering the shades)
>Changes because of the interactions between the party members
>Not entirely a bitch, saved a kid from some wolves and shows her soft side sometimes
>Morally ambiguous, given that she
basically slaughters people, knowing that they are humans yet doesn't care because muh grandma, muh revenge
>Doesn't slam her agenda on the player's face every 5 fucking minutes; you could finish the whole game without knowing that
she has a dick
I'd like to support this anon's suggestion. She was my favorite female
(?)character in a while.
Don't sacrifice femininity for power, there's nothing interesting about men with tits. Make her fit with the game world. If the setting is one where women are oppressed and are seen as secondary to men, then it wouldn't be natural to have a woman who can beat up 50 dudes like it's nobody's business.
That speaks more about your taste in waifu than anything else, really.
Pic related, a proper woman.
Best be careful before you get blown the fuck out, nigger.
