>Perhaps the oddest thing about this remake is the presence of in-game advertising. For a game that is staunchly anti-capitalism, as evidenced by the snarky critiques that appear on in-game billboards, it seems contradictory for those billboards to then scroll to reveal a poster for an upcoming PS4 game. More harmful is that those ads contain depictions of human characters, violating the otherwise consistently odd nature of the game's fauna. Though rarely seen, these ads still took me out of the experience in an awkward, fourth-wall-breaking fashion.
what the fuck
Lorne talked about this months ago. They're not ads in the sense they've been paid for; the team just wanted to take an "us indies are all in this together" stance and decided to promote other games for free.
Yes, you can debate if it's a good idea to break the "reality" of the game world, but it's not a case of Lorne selling out
>All these crybabies moaning about ads. Ads that arent even hurting them or obscuring (dont know if spelled right) the view,If your going to complain then complain about gamebreaking glitches or othe stuff that MATTER
Jesus fucking christ
Lanning had a vote on his site on what the next project should be and the remake came out 1st place iirc
I'm not even interested in this but I don't think that's really selling out
>This is Oddworld.
the entire point of oddworld is the destruction of an impossibly beautiful world being destroyed by petty greed and industrialism. the whole world is plastered with adverts for the latest product, which are little more than sanitised propaganda for the utter desolation of the world.
actually putting corporate ads into an anti-capitalist game with no regard for artistic integrity or consistency is a fucking insult
>what is artistic integrity
Jesus christ. this is what this autist is crying about? I had to fucking look for it. Its barely noticeable. It could have been anything. This isnt anything like the pepsi in battlefield 2142 or cingular wireless in all the early 2000's NFS's.
This shit aint an 'out of the experience' moment, This is a gamespot hipster being stupid.
Their justification for the Sony timed exclusive was because "Gilray explained the delay for the PC release is due to the knowledge that a simultaneous release alongside consoles would result in some people pirating the PC version and not buying either of them"
I think they caved to greed a while a go, and basically told fans "Fuck you, you thieves"
>Honestly mad he can't pirate it.
They've been a hurting dev for a long time now. This OH SO JEW is them trying to have a viable business model.
If you don't like it then vote with your wallet, but you weren't going to buy it anyway.
Do I have to say this in every thread? Sony did not pay for exclusivity. The game is coming to PS4 first because the game was on stage at E3 2013. And there was NEVER going to be a simultaneous release anyway because the team is too small get all SKUs working at the same time.
OP is Matthewmatosis.
Oddworld series is a shit series Matthewmatosis. What's so funny about farting??
Go away you fat irish prick.
Humans have no place in the Oddworld games. I am more bothered about the damage to immersion than the "Jewish" aspect.
It's because Oddworld is a slightly obscure and older game. Obscure/old games are ok to bitch about in the eyes of "journoalists" since they think no one will give enough of a shit if they get shit wrong or if they're being stupid.
One excuse I might accept is that Glukkons have gotten into video game business and their creative team had come up with a "new" race to play as in their games.
You know. Not unlike Oddworld Inhabitants coming up with Mudokons and Glukkons.
While I am upset that it breaks the immersion, I can understand the idea of advertising other indie games to support them considering they don't advertise themselves much
It's only the voice from the post-Oddysee games. I don't see what the huge fuss is about.
>95% of the game is 1:1 remake without any changes aside graphically, literally the laziest thing imaginable
>3% of the 'new content' is just new 3 second cutscenes on top of the old ones
>the definition of an HD remake
>thirty fucking dollars
>reviewing a game by his advertising
we've reached a new kind of hell
"Post-Oddysee games" is what he posted.
Games is plural. You cannot say post oddysee games when there was only one singular oddysee games.
Can you ask yourself if you know how to read and what those words mean, because clearly you're having an issue when I specifically stated this was the issue already.
"Post-Oddysee" is a compound adjective, hence the hyphen between "post" and "Oddysee."
>It's only the voice from the post-Oddysee games.
"It" is the subject.
"Games" is a noun.
"Post-Oddysee" is a compound adjective and describes "games."
"...Only the voice from the post-Oddysee games.," is the predicate.
Dude I was just pointing out that you can't see very well. I don't care about shit about indie games, particularly ones that are copy and paste remakes of old games that only exist so people can suck their own dicks over having played a game when they were younger
I don't mind ads in games if they make sure the ads work in universe.
If there is a Sci-Fi game and Coke wants to advertise in the game they should work with the developers to design the Coke of the future for the setting so it looks like it would down the line.
Seeing game ads in Oddworld is dumb. They should have altered the ads to be in-world versions of those games starring Mudokons or whatever.
I would gladly buy it if I could afford to throw around money. Thirty dollars is double the price of most indie games though and quality or not this game is basically an indie game even if I loved the first two games. I need to wait for the PS3 version any ways.
>I am yet to be convinced that the upgrade is worth it.
Looks like a worthy enough remake to me. It does seem much easier though but that is likely due to the added quicksave, the better controls and scrolling screen.
would buy / drink
To someone who doesn't know this might seem a bit ridiculous but it truly does make the first that much harder. Had the first had those two things it would have been just as fun to play as exoddus. Even though to me both games are still really fun.
>delayed PC version
>in game ads
>but muh stick it to the mean publishers
Enjoy supporting bullshit while pretending to be helping better the industry. I can't believe people are trying to get others to buy this because they're convinced it'll send a message.
I'm still on my first playthrough of Oddysee because of the awful saving system. I want to save these mudokons but it won't save my progress until I clear several screens that I keep fucking up due to precision jumping. I'm was really enjoying it before though.
>the adds are on the mother fucking tracker
>they didn't even turn the them into Oddworld versions of the games
Another bunch of faggots acting like PC isn't even more lucrative than consoles these days, and pretending that piracy is this big, bad boogeyman yet somehow only on PC even though every fucking game gets released two weeks early for everyone who pirates on console. All while they complain about piracy and put ads in their games.
Yeah, they can go fuck themselves.
That's a terrible metaphor for casualization of games, since exoddus plays better.
Tighter controls and/or a quicksave system is hardly dumbing down a game, even if it does make things easier.
You need very precise timing on most of the game. I would use a controller since the game was likely meant to be played with one.
Yeah Exoddus is the better game for sure.
The oddworld games benefit from the system. In fact the games seem very much built for quicksaving.
Plays fine with keyboard, there's no need to use mouse. Also, all movement is grid-based (jumping has length of 3 normal steps, running jump is 5 steps etc) so it doesn't really matter what are you going to use, but you're gonna be precise anyway.
Well, early on in the game you run past a barrel but if you stop and drop down behind it it reveals a hidden area. Its that kind of thing. The level design is quite limited so there aren't many places to explore. You shouldn't need a guide if you're patient.
So, how is the remake, anyway? I find it hard to believe that this was done in the Unity engine; it looks way too good for that, imo. Granted, I prefer the moody art-style of the original, but New 'n' Tasty looks quite nice, considering.
hes right though, the adds in this game arent even obnoxious, they are not for like coke or nike or anything like that, just other games that the developers wanted to support. you probably would not have noticed they existed if some guy hadnt told you.
This shit was even done in banjo tooie
>complaining about games advertising other games
are you really that autistic enough to get annoyed by this?
were you also annoyed when you saw jak and daxter in the ratchet and clank universe and vice versa?
It's a favour to help promote other indie titles. Personally I'd prefer a system where buying Abe gives you a discount on the game they wanted advertising. It would bring it to my attention in a noninvasive way and give me more incentive to take the risk.
>Personally I'd prefer a system where buying Abe gives you a discount on the game they wanted advertising.
Spelunky has references to super meat boy
Super meat boy has references to bit trip beat, VVVVV and others.
one thousand spikes (or knives or whatever man) has references to these too.
If you want to promote a game, it's way better to reference it and to put something related to the gameplay than to place a literal fucking ad in the stupid game.
I'm really hoping it's optional
Dust had you unlock indie characters for a small bonus HP. Personally I'm not 100% against things like that if it's just helping smaller guys. But I feel it's the way they did it that is causing the problem. I feel they are doing something nice for each other but I feel they should see how it also effects their game if they do stuff like that.
>I find it hard to believe that this was done in the Unity engine; it looks way too good for that
Its what happens when a real dev works on it instead of indy shitters
>Granted, I prefer the moody art-style of the original
I know what you mean, although the only time it was really glaring to me was in the Stockyards (which is much worse) but its fine besides that
>don't kill yourself over missing a few mudokons
>First time playing Oddworld as a kid
>Get through the first area, come up to the next Mudokan counter
>Mfw seeing how much it had dropped as all the Mudokans I failed to save were murdered
>you probably would not have noticed they existed if some guy hadnt told you.
So much of the character of Oddworld comes from the posters and small background detail. These are completely different from the rest, they stand out like sore thumbs
I would have been cool if he did what someone suggested earlier and done little Oddworld pastiches of them with Oddworld inhabitants in the lead roles
Guy that is about to play it for the first time. Does it tell you how many mudokons are in an area? Like would I know that I have to save say 10 of them in one area before leaving to the next?
>There were people who believed Lorne Lanning still after all these years
>There were people who believed him even after he sold out to Sony and started dick riding them
I really love Oddworld, it's a great series. But 30 fucking dollars for this game is way too much. That's half as much as any game coming out soon that looks good. I'd pay 15 dollars for this game.
Instead of buying this though, I bought the remake of the MASTERPIECE game of Another World which was around 7 dollars PS+, and it's such a great remake.
Also, I'm waiting for when people who are really good remake Oddysee for LBP3, granted if they make levels fucking bonkers huge, or have cross-level saving.
I can pay 30 bucks, it's just that I chose not to. However, I'm now contemplating getting it because I've seen a lot more about it, and the increase of 200 Mudokons is really tempting.
Other than that, it didn't really seem that different, and that was my reasoning.
Plus, the ads are really annoying to the atmosphere, but hopefully they might patch this shit with Mudokons as the characters in the very least.
>Plus, the ads are really annoying to the atmosphere
yeah sure if you're some autistic fuck like >>255160804 said. You are pretty much the SJW of the gaming industry. Crying about literally anything.
So all of the complaints are about advertisement......it's fucking oddworld, of course there is in game advertisement. In truth, I can't wait to replay oddworld from the beginning. This thread is pretty much usless. If you're not going to get the game then don't. For this thread to be approved for a complaint, play the game first....then complain after.
So amusing that Oddworld is the golden child of /v/ above any criticism.
Literally in game advertisement which is bad enough but it's in a staunchly anti-capitalism game.
There's no excusing that it's bullshit. Don't need to give them $30 to call them out on this.
Do you by every EA and Activision related game before criticizing it?
The annoying part isn't that they are there, it's that they are humans. Even then, while it is really annoying, it's not going to change my decision to buy the game. I was actually trying to separate that from my reasoning to buy the game, and was trying to link that to >>255188816, but I fucked it up.
You are right in the fact that it is crying about anything.
Please help me.
He's not right at all, don't let people convince you issues like this should be marginalised. Screaming muh autism because someone dared to care about something outside of pure gameplay mechanics is the childish and unreasonable thing to do. For a game like Oddworld to have 4th wall breaking ads in it is a big deal. Aesthetics and world building are important to some games and that's fine. If he or anyone else doesn't care about it that's their business but the Oddworld games sold themselves to people based on their unique world and story as well as their gameplay.
Nintendo of all people had something similar to what you described a couple months ago, granted, for a limited time, but still.
>Real world items advertised in a fantasy setting
This should never be a thing. Chupa Chups in Zool is just as retarded as BMW being in Mario Kart.
>real world items advertised in a game with a matching setting
Makes sense for games like Spiderman because the source materal takes place in New York.
>fantasy items advertised in a fantasy setting
Everything is to its own so this can build a better world.
You got to admit, he is kind of right in the fact that we are getting pissy about anything these days, I mean, it's not like we are being forced to look at it, you can easily play this game without looking at it or noticing it, and you can easily just not acknowledge it's there.
It does break the atmosphere, I'll give you that.
I'm going to side with no one and say while it's stupid and breaking, it's not shoved up your ass and you can get over it
>I'm going to side with no one and say while it's stupid and breaking, it's not shoved up your ass and you can get over it
Fuck off, you arent progressive for being as middle ground-y as you can manage
Of course you can get over it, that doesnt change the fact its immersion breaking and we'll bitch about it if we want
One of the biggest draws of Oddworld is the world and message.
In game advertising fucks with both of these and it's even worse because it was remade with this put in. It's needlessly damaging the product.
There's no reason to ignore flaws because other people are too insecure to deal with the fact that their favorite game isn't perfect. The only way we makes things better is by talking about it. We'd get nowhere if every time a negative was brought up someone came flailing their arms screaming about how unfair and nitpicky the criticism is.
I've played New 'N' Tasty and you better believe when I saw a massive human face pop up on the screen I fucking noticed it. It's right there next to the number of Mudokons saved/killed, you'll definitely see it. It's the principle of the matter that annoys me more than anything else. The new devs just aren't respecting the effort the team put into crafting the world of the original.
If/when you play New 'N' Tasty you'll see how shitty the whole package is for yourself.
I like the game as a whole but fuck the advertising. The industrial levels always had a very grim dieselpunk theme, the ads look completely out of place. It doesn't help that half of them have humans on them.
Would it really have been so difficult to just give nods to other indie games my making versions of the advertisements with sligs and mudokons instead of humans?
When the world and atmosphere are such big parts of Oddworld I completely understand why people would pass on this and go back to the original when the dev team is blatantly breaking the rules set out by the game and ruining immersion.
I don't think it'd hurt as much if there was some kind of biting irony to it or just something to make it funny and fitting.
Because the way they did it just feels like they didn't care that they were damaging the source material and just aren't taking this seriously.
You can't just forget and/or disregard the lore of the game you're updating.
