Beautiful Games Thread.
No photorealistic "superior grafix" games, please. Just games with a unique, beautiful art style that separates them from all the other games made using 3D models or sprites.
starting with a frog
Pretty much everyone at Vanillaware is an artist and they're just making the games they like making. It's nice to see them enjoy moderate success.
don't you have decent pc? great solo game, even better with 2 friends co-op
Zeno Clash 1&2
the two American McGee's Alice games
The Lego Movie tie-in game may be the weakest new Lego game so far but the fact that the whole world is actually made out of bricks is pretty damn amazing.
Designing the levels must've been fun and tedious as fuck.
Also, the animations of Unikitty are absolutely gorgeous since she's constantly changing shapes like in the movie.
Gonna dump some Muramasa and Dragon's Crown screens I've made.
I would say Wizard is most fun to solve puzzles with, since you can do just about whatever you think will work once you can summon 3 constructs. Archer is most fun to move throughout the level, with her hook-shot. Warrior is kind of boring though.
It ain't really unique since a lot of titles from that platform and era had a similar artstyle, but YU-NO's graphics (especially if you actually played the game itself, since then stuff like music and voice acting add to the atmosphere) are effectively dead today.
18 years ago people did some amazing shit, much nicer to look at then some things today.
At least you only have to actually go through every boss area once in Genroku Legends and every other character will get a shortcut straight to the boss afterwards.
What was the name of that PSP game again with an art style similar to Greek frescos and pottery art?
Not sure about Greek but you might be talking about Patapon.
This is 4chan 101 you n00b
Never mind, I found it.
It was Apotheon and wasn't for PSP but PC and PS4.
Turns out it also hasn't been released yet.
It's a shame the Designers Republic is dead.
Silent Hill series, easily.
It's just so twisted and beautiful.
AoM has some great Greek representation, but my favorite will probably always be Master of Olympus
It wasn't bad, but it looks the worst of all the Sierra citybuilders.
My first was Pharaoh, and trying to go to Zeus/Poseidon after that was difficult. Zeus/Poseidon were so ugly I couldn't keep playing it.
Emperor is fucking crackerjack, though.
Grand Knights History, the only Vanillaware game to not come to the states, it's been translated unofficially but it sort of requires a server sort of. It's great which pisses me off though...
>the only Vanillaware game to not come to the states
Anon if you don't have one, I suggest you look around for a used PSP. You can get the earlier models for as low as 40 bucks now. Hell, I got mine for 20 from a seller on Craigslist, it even came hacked.
Started playing Rez the other day, pretty cool. Thinking about getting Child of Eden now.
It works mostly fine on this piece of shit, so you should be good.
I dunno if you can call the original Siren game beautiful, but it did have an interesting style going for it with the texture choices, fog/lighting, and how they rendered the faces. Some parts of that game make me think of Beksinski. The original Siren is a game that somehow makes grey and brown look good in a videogame.
Alright, so I could run it on my dektop that I never use anymore, but still probably not the laptop.
Or maybe, I dunno. I'll certanly give it a look-see.
How's the gameplay? Vanillaware does mostly beatemups, yeah?
have fun anon :)
I've been playing single player no probs. PSP online just gives you the chance to play with other people's knights etc.
Any reason why it wasn't brought over to the West? XSEED was working on it apparently, but canceled it from one day to the other.
Famitsu even gave it a platinum award, afaik.
Also, is that a fan translation?
newest version of PPSSPP also fixed the sprite issue which means no more blocks !
No clue anon....prob cause of SWJ maybe?
>those fucking backgrounds
This is what 2D game art should have evolved to after the 90s, not the the ugly ass primitive polygon 3D shit that set video game beauty back by 20 years.
I hear you.
It ain't rocket science, there are 23 people, Kamitani included, working at Vanillaware, and the man himself said that most of them are artists.
If only more developers started to again make the games they want and not the ones they're told to make; I think that's an important factor.
It aren't SJW, they said "the resources just weren't there" So I'm guessing someone at the top didn't think they were gonna be able to get a profit. I can see why, Vanillaware's title right before GKH was Muramasa , which didn't do so hot in it's original release.
Anyways I didn't know this game got a full translation so thanks anon.
You don't even need to hack the PSP to play region locked games.
The advantage of hacking a PSP is that you can play pirated games from the memory stick. It's much more convenient because you can use special plugins (cheat plugins are popular), the load times are far superior, it uses less battery if you play from the memory stick and not the UMD, and it's much more portable because you can load all the content you like onto a single 32GB card.
Vanillaware really has a thing for massive bouncing tits, doesn't it?
I'm not a huge fan. I mean, don't get me wrong, I've looked at my fair share of gigantic_breasts images on gelbooru when I was in the right mood but I don't do this meet-me-halfway shit where the breasts are covered from the bottom only just up enough to cover the nipple and areola.
And even if everyone was just completely stark naked, full frontal, everything showing in the game I probably wouldn't pop a boner because I'm not 15 and I have a modicum of control over when and how I allow myself to be aroused.
I mean there's a time and a place for that. I don't whip my dick out at R rated movies during sex scenes either.
Basically, what I'm trying to say here is -- why can't people just keep it in their pants? I mean, honestly. I don't mind that kind of eye candy being put in for its target demographic but why do we have to make it into a big issue from every perspective?
It's not that big of an issue. At all.
If everyone realized that, maybe we'd get more games localized.
No, they have a thing for over emphasis, especially on its characters. The men are mega muscled or absurdly tall, the women are curvaceous with lots of assets, or muscled as well.
so much this! since I'm a kid I though "oh boy! how cool will videogames look in the future when they aren't limited by 8-16 bits! we are going to get gorgeous 2D!" but everyone jumped in the 3D wagon or works with minimalistic 2D.
PD: thank you kind anon for showing me Grand Knights history, it looks awesome
A lot of new developers are making the games they want, it just so happens that they're shit.
It's happening slowly, but eventually all the developers left will want to make the cookie cutter shit we have today. Hell, look at that PS4 game where the devs are ashamed of it being a game rather than a movie.
Still haven't played it. My pc was never able to run it and after having seen it in high res i wanted to wait until later. Then my pc died and now i have a shitty one that's not even worth upgrading.
I wish Muramasa was in PS3 or PC.
I also liked the Aesthetics of Dishonored a lot.
can anyone share their psp emulator and setting that work the best with this game?
I usually struggle with each game for the best settings, still downloading tho, just hoping someone could save me some trouble.
>ctrl+f "Metal Slug"
c'mon now, pay respect to your elders
how long is the single player part? judging from this post on that nicoblog it seems it's rather short?
>For those who have played the game: Is there a point to playing this game without online? I've already trained two parties on the solo mode, really fun by the way, but that time limit gets on my nerves because once the training phase is over, they can only be deployed in the war mode which is way too difficult, with no sense of direction and as far as I know, is only interesting when playing online (and sadly we can't).
Even if the gameplay was bland I loved it as a visual experience.
>king of fighters XIII
Is this a ruse? That game looks like dogshit.
Since all the good ones have been taken I'm just gonna go pleb and say the DKC games. Sure they tried for a pretty realistic look and it's aged somewhat poorly but it still looks pretty unique.
I quite liked transistors art-style, though it could have been even better if it was less zoomed out in the actual gameplay and more like the artwork
