So whats the verdict on this? Failed concept or fantastic accessory? Are there any games that axtually make good use of it or no point in even having it?
They can't keep up with the graphical upgrades of their peers, so they're trying to anticipate what they could do that would make their games unique, feelings and games that you could only get on a Nintendo console. To be honest, most of the 1st Party games that use it are great. But the problem is that the other devs have to worry about making a game for more than just one console.
I like the way the controller feels. I wish they actually used the gamepad more, though I mostly have games that don't really use it. If you like Nintendo games, it's good. PC + Wii U/3ds is the best combo this console gen.
I got the Zelda one, it looks nice.
Eh, I found it nice in WWHD. Switch items without pausing is really useful. In MH3U, you can put the map and items and stuff on it, but it's not as useful in that game IMO.
All around, I'd say it's a gimmick. That said, I still like my Wii U and would recommend one on sale.
Why the hell would you ever need to hold the Game Pad or the NES controller with one hand?
Unless you're some dying Ethiopian child, it is very easy to hold the Game Pad with one hand.
I like it a lot, it's lighter and comfier than I expected and the touchscreen works really well. It always bothers me when you hear someone up with a plan to "fix the Wii U" and the first step is dropping it entirely. It's the console's hugest feature and it does what it's meant to perfectly, it's hardly the fucking Kinect.
It's a nice idea. Off TV play is about the most use I get out of it though. A second screen that makes you shift your entire focus to it from the main screen doesn't work as well as say the DS where you aren't move your eyes/face as much and can more easily concentrate on two screens.
So while it's a nice idea, it's mostly useless for me. The pro controller is way better for me than the gamepad.
It's pretty fun console. Nice features, a lot of various options like controllers or external HDD. Enough games out and more to come.
Wii U worth it for me.
I have most consoles of other gens, and this gen I don't see a reason to get any other one of mediaboxes.
Sales-dick measuring contest can fuck off, I really don't care about that shit at all, and most people who do, just want to get some console war bullshit.
you are the biggest shill i've ever seen.
you can see it in the OP image. ther eis no place that conforms to a palm at all. you're pretty much just holding it with your fingers
As the owner of both a 3DS and a Wii U, I have to say both Sony (Vita+PS3/4) and Nvidia (Shield) do the whole offscreen deal a lot better. I'd much rather have Nintendo focus on a single screen handheld that adds to their home console, instead of a gimmicky piece of junk that does nothing without the console.
I fucking love it.
But then, I love the idea of playing handhelds anyway, so a "Handheld" console that plays console-quality games anywhere in my house I want is a really nifty idea to me.
Nice concept you have there. Get a worse off-tv experience just for the small price of additional (to price of the ps4 or ps3) 250$ of a portable console which is half-dead aside from some japan titles.
There a lot of nice concepts out there, sure. But realization of those is terrible.
Considering Vita costs just a little less than Wii U (not counting stupid memory cards) - and can't do shit if you don't have PS3/PS4 (and PS Now is pure garbage)
I don't see how anyone could defend Vita as something good and useful. Aside of japanese games and screen - that thing is pure trash.
If not Muramasa I'd sold mine already.
It was never ok, at least for me. I didn't have Wii and I could care less about sales.
I have a Wii U, and I still don't care about sales, only about games.
It's usual shitposter business, only made to fuel console war bullshit. No matter which console is "winning" dick measuring contest. Idiots do react on other idiots posting about numbers irrelevant to them. That was happening, that will keep happening. It's a way to start shitstorm with same kind of idiots and get some weird type of "pleasure" out of it.
Typical "it's okay when Nintendo does it" usually is same fuel as sale numbers. More often used pretty wrong, and sometimes used right. People who react on that are idiots as well. And who post that are idiots too.
This place full of them, didn't you notice? People just want to shitpost about console wars all day long, it's their way of having retarded fun I guess.
Anon, I found this picture of you, and I think I can understand why you have a problem with the gamepad.
Waiting on my Wii U, should come today.
Seeing as I'll play on my PC monitor instead of a TV I think I'll like it a lot. I don't have to look up or down a lot to look at the different screens, my Wii U will be right on the desk so charging while playing wont be annoying and I like the idea of being able to play games on it while watching a stream or some shit I wish
I had 2 monitors
Damn, that phrase again. I have a problem with this phrase cause I always use it thinking it's the same as "I don't care about". I got corrected already couple of times, but yet to remember it.
Sorry, not native English speaker.
But actually I do care a little, I think. Cause they are needed to increase console's game library. I just don't shitpost about sales anywhere and really don't give them that much of a thought aside from acknowledging them.
What stops you getting second monitor? I used CRT one for a while till I got new monitor, then I still kept using old 4:3 LCD as second monitor.
I mean you can get any monitor pretty damn cheap if not free, and it'll do as second monitor quite nicely.
Only reason not to get it is physical space constraints.
I wasn't tying to put you down or anything, just that if you know that "couldn't" = "could not" you probably wont make that mistake again.
I learned most of my English through films, WoW and Morrowind
Yeah an old 4:3 might fit, but like I said it's pretty cramped here.
Nah, I do know that, thankfully.
My brain is just for some fucking reason thinks that phrase "I couldn't care less", "I could care less" and "I don't care" have very similar meaning. But if I take some time and think about those phrases I start to understand their differences.
I just can't do that on the fly.
It's a fantastic addition that gets way more flack than it deserves. The only complaint I can agree on is it's abysmal battery life.
I'm serious, it is amazing having a secondary touch screen for console games. Wind Waker is the best example I can think of off the top of my head. Being able to switch weapons and tools on the fly was amazing, among other things.
>PC is on the table
But yeah, I think with little sokoban action you can fit 19" 4:3 there or so.
Just a reminder that you can get official better battery which enhance time to 8 hr or so. (same as dualshock 4)
>admitting your only bases was the OP's image and you were a lying little skunk this whole time
Maximum kek get the fuck out
Oh, yeah I suppose there is that. Then again as someone who can comfortably play Kid Icarus for hours with no problems, comfort's not really a problem I've ever run into with the gamepad.
Yeah, Wii U gamepad has somewhere near weight as classic 3DS, maybe even lighter.
So if you don't have problem with long sessions via 3DS, you surely won't have any problems with Wii U gamepad.
I guess other problem is that you need go thru a lot of hassle and waiting time to get a replacement.
Niche market I guess. Maybe some indie studio will do it along the line, but I'd won't get your hopes much.
Yeah, but it's still pretty pathetic time for a controller without much going on.
Ah, that one. Yeah, that was dumb decision to make, I agree.
Maybe they guessed that market is saturated enough with them, dunno. My only slight hope that it means it'll be possible to use Wii U Pro controller with Wii mode. But if not, that was really fucking dumb thing to do. I have one, and it's pretty good, I doubt there is 3rd party ones of similar quality.
what? well, that's just bullshit, anon. Quick google search says that it's only white model is the one which is rumored to be discounted.
Wii U Pro controller itself is still manufactured without problem.
>its a fucking RECTANGLE there are 0 grooves and its too large
Did you somehow get a hold of the 2011 model they showed off before it was even announced?
The new one is neither of those.
Odd? I bought one a few days ago and there were some still in stock. Are you sure you don't mean this one?
What Nintendo needs to do for its next portable
>Slim it down somewhat
>Improve build quality, mainly of the buttons and triggers
>Throw some high end mobile hardware inside, including a powerful mobile GPU from Nvidia
>Replace screen with flexible OLED screen
>Put hinges in the middle that allow it to fold in half
I'd buy it on launch
aghh im not! gamestop has none online
walmart stopped carrying them!
the arent being made anymore.. either that or they didnt want my money?!
Nintendo fucked up bad. It tried to ride the tablet trend of the IPad and all those things, instead of taking this generation as a "back to basics" stance.
Everybody and they're fucking grandma owned a Wii. Everybody. Announcing a new console that's fully compatible with all the accessories that the wii had, to reel in the casuals was a match made in heaven, but they still fucked up.
>It tried to ride the tablet trend of the IPad
It was first being prototyped in 2005
>Nintendo fucked up bad. It tried to ride the tablet trend of the IPad and all those things, instead of taking this generation as a "back to basics" stance.
The Wii was the back to the basics stance.
The gamepad isn't trying to copy the Ipad you fucking jackass, It was trying to copy the DS.
You know one of the most successful gaming systems ever?
Stop being a dumbass.
They aren't even trying to appeal to the casual crowd like they did with the wii.
no the worker there told me that nintendo discontinued it and they had none in stock
just a firsthand account and i too can find no info, but only telling u what i was told anon
they probably just wanna push the comeback for the Gamecube controller
and maybe avoid any patent trolling from microsoft in the future since it looks very similar...
If the Wii U had been named something else it would have sold gorillions. Casuals are literally too stupid to understand it's not a Wii accessory and by the time they did, PS4 and Xbone were already out.
That said, Nintendo needs to get their shit together and make an actual competitively powerful console next gen. They're riding on pure luck in the handheld department, if Sony hadn't fucked up so bad with the Vita they'd be screwed there too.
How the fuck is riding wagglan into every single fucking game back to basics?
And yeah, nintendo now is trying to appeal to the hardcore market too, but the marketing is horrible. I still remember those "Wii would like to play" commercials. They were fucking genius.
>they probably just wanna push the comeback for the Gamecube controller
Oh fucking hell.
Fuck the GC remote it's the most overhyped piece of trash ever
>Retarded button layout
>Awful small D-pad
>Terrible thumbstick quality
>Lacks a second shoulder button
>lacks a home and a select button
>HAs a fucking terrible and small C stick
The Pro controller had it's downfawls but it was better than that piece of shit.
>Should've had analogue triggers
Can somebody tell me what analog triggers are useful for?
I've only ever found them useful in Super Mario Sunshine and Smash Bros (and even not really then).
People always say racing games, but I've never played a racing game where I didn't constantly floor it.
>How the fuck is riding wagglan into every single fucking game back to basics?
By not having them mandetory for ANY game.
Your'e a fucking retard.
>Wii sports gets an HD Eshop exclusive rerelease
>Similar for WiiFit but it's massively downplayed and released on Eshop first and then stores some time later
>Pushing games like Splatoon, MH3U, and ZombiU more
>Paid several third parties off for ports
>Publishing Bayonetta 2, Devil's third, and a rumored three more games for their system
>Make the pad which is basically a normal controller with a screen
>Make the Pro Controller
You're a fucking retard if you think they're even aiming in the vicinity of causuals with the Wii.
Sure, they're throwing bones but that's it.
that may be the case
but the only concrete evidence i have to support this would be that none of the retailers nintendo list have the product:
have none online. how is this possible for a new product?
Anything said in the exchange is hearsay as well but we had a lengthy conversation where they understood i meant WII U pro etc.
with their manager right there as well
would be odd disinfo from them
Swedish site but a fuckton of stores have them in stock here.
Green symbol means they have it in stock. More stores if you scroll down.
Calm the fuck down, retailers didn't stock them for some reason, that's it. There is plenty of places to buy them other than those US specific retailers.
Your paranoia is idiotic and laughable.
And stop believing any idiot who works in a store. That doesn't mean jack shit. He just talked out of his ass and you willingly eat it up.
What the fuck are you even talking about? Every single worthwhile game on the wii forced you to use the Wiimote and nunchuck. Just because you didn't have to in brawl and mario kart doesn't mean that it was "optional".
Ask them, I have no idea. Yesterday there was one big salty thread about how bad Wii U Pro is because of no analogue triggers. How that controller is supposedly is worthless for "hundreds of awesome racing games".
>What the fuck are you even talking about
The WiiU, jackass.
The WiiU is their tryuing to appeal to the retarded as fuck GC crowd again.
The Wii was their back to the roots console because it was a family centered toy JUST like the SNES and NES were marketed and made in mind with.
>Every single worthwhile game on the wii forced you to use the Wiimote and nunchuck.
Which just goes to show even more ignorance on your part.
there was nothing wrong with the Wiimote+nunchuk either, had the best shooting controls on any console ever made.
The controller itself is surprisingly decent. I think I will eventually get Pro Controller for couch multiplayer, but Gamepad is great and I think it will be my choice for singleplayers on Wii U.
When I took it out of the box, I was put off at first:
It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be, but at the same time somewhat lighter than I thought. It really felt like a toy
Then (after 2 hours of setup and updating), I got to play my first games with it and things started to change.
- The off-screen play is fantastic. No lag, plays great
- The screen should not be any smaller, otherwise the above feature just wouldn't make sense and be no fun
- The rest of the size of the Pad is just ergonomics so you can hold it comfortably.
So while I'm still blown away by the size of that thing from time to tome, the off-screen play has absolutely convinced me and therefore, I wouldn't want the pad to be any smaller.
It's very comfortable to hold and the small weight helps that as well.
you dont find it odd none of those retailers carry it? yet i can buy a wii mote from them all?
because they dont sell? wat lmfao
and i'll excuse your nasty attitude as i'm sure u havent jerked it to lil anime girls today or something
Dunno man, I play mostly arcade racing stuff, so I don't worry about control schemes at all. Just telling what I've seen recently around here.
Wii U Pro controllers have been selling out like crazy where I live. There isn't one in a Gamestop within 100 miles of where I live. I've been checking in every retail store I drove by for the past month or so and couldn't find one. Eventually I gave up and bought one on Amazon. I could easily see if you didn't look into it thinking that it was discontinued because the local retailers are treating it like it has since they never get enough of them.
Opoona, Muramasa, Smash, Chocobo Dungeon, Pandora's Tower (Though the Wiimote controls in that were GODLY) Mario Kart, The Last Story, Fire Emblem, and a whole bunch of other games.
Some retailers from country I'm not from - don't have a product in stock which is available all over the net to order whenever you are from with probably better prices as well. What a horrifying thing to happen, indeed. They loose money and consumers, *gasp*
It sold even in fucking siberia where I'm from.
Failed gimmick and failed console.
Even nintendo doesn't know what the hell to do with the touch pad.
I don't like pikmin and even I could see the possible applications of the wiiu screen for a pikmin game.
It can have all the fucking "potential" in the world, but when its creators can't even find any meaningful use for it you can sure as shit bet that third party devs are going to be avoiding the consoles gimmick like the plague.
N64 brought analog controls into the mainstream that was pretty crazy. just look at that monstrosity of a controler, its literal just 2 controllers mashed together. They also brought in rumble with the n64.
>I don't like pikmin and even I could see the possible applications of the wiiu screen for a pikmin game.
The latest update to Pikmin 3 allowed you to play the entire game with the pad.
I don't think having to look up and down over and over improves anything. I'd rather just kick back and focus on one screen.
Maybe if my eyes were spaced vertically on my face one above the other and I could view both screens at the same time it might not be as useless.
>BAAAAH I DON'T LIKE!!!
That's not a game anon.
>Pikmin 3, using the Wiimote+numnchuk and the gamepad to controll all three characters at once is the most efficient way to get the most out of the day
It's also really fun
>Wonderful 101 allows you to keep the screens split and offers better drawing options, though using the stick is still usefull
>3Dworld offers boost mode
>NSMBU offers boost mode.
>WWHD allows you to seamlessly manage your inventory and cut out pausing except when it's actually needed
>MH3U offer much needed Hud Decluttering.
>Literally any game that offers Off TV play and or Miimaps on it are instantly better
Now list the games where other forms of controls are better.`
You keep dodging my question.
List a game where using the gamepad is actually worse and why it is worse.
>I don't like looking in between screens!"
Isn't a complaint it's a personal preference. It's also easily managable.
>It always bothers me when you hear someone up with a plan to "fix the Wii U" and the first step is dropping it entirely.
The people that say that are those who have never used one.
I guess it just is my preference then. Any time I have to take myself out of the game to look down at a second screen then back up over and over makes my gaming experience worse because it breaks my focus.
Dropping the pad would be the worst idea you could possibly have.
It would maybe allow for a ~50$ price cut and kill off the one hardware advantage the WiiU has.
The entire existing consumer basewould feel scammed. All games currently in development would have to re-focus because they now have to target another possible setup. And all future games will probably play it safe and leave the Pad out of the equation entirely, since there's no way to tell if the user will have one.
At the same time third-party devs will continue to whine about the lack of performance, making it hard to port their grimdark cinematic experiences.
All that being said, I cannot imagine there being a significant number of people that are holding back on buying a WiiU JUST because of the pad. Shitposters on /v/ don't count.
My guess is that if your sole reason to not buy a WiiU is the pad, you're not all that interested in it in the first place. Not that there was anything wrong with that, I just think that dropping the pad would not push WiiU sales that much. Not nearly as much to be worth all of its downsides
