Just started this, best thing so far was beating the shit out of a seal
It really is fantastic. I love how all the levels are unique without many assets being reused. Also thank god that they added an extra heart for rocket and mine cart levels from DKCR
What surprises me is that, when I saw they added hearts replacing the one hit kill of the originals I feared it was gonna be a piss easy game
Yeah, I was pretty wrong about that. Both of them are really challenging in all the best ways.
The bosses were definitely an improvement over returns, though i disgress there was a little nitpick i didnt like.
In Returns, your main target is the Tiki's, so after beating a boss, you get a cutscene of them getting rekt before the Tiki comes out, meanwhile in TF the last hit on the Viking bosses goes directly to the multi hit because they are your primary target.
I feel like I'm the bad guy in Tropical Freeze.
Why am I beating up these characters on their own islands? They aren't even possessed.
Most enemies don't even try to hurt you, just the penguins and a couple more.
I like it because it comes at the perfect time.
>Half point of the game
>A Fucking Tornado what the fuck is going on
>Oh shit the forest is fucking burning now, what the shit
>Next Level is calm and soothing Night Time with Bramble Blast right before going to a Rocket barrel with giant ass Sharks
It fitted very well as a Calm for the storm of an already big storm
Wait till you get to the polar bear. Best boss fight + music in game and possibly any 2-D platformer.
I laughed hard when he faked me out on one of his attacks and I jumped right into it.
The Snowmads are clearly taking over various islands and forcing them to be of use.
Mangrove Cove seems like it was the most newest Island before yours, based on the bermuda triangle with a shit load of wreckages.
World 2 is a massive woodland area housed by the Owls who are getting a shit load of Wood from the tree's as scene from the minecart in the mill
World 3 is where they use said wood from World 2 to build their ships and catch fish to use as food and weapons.
World 4 seems to be some underwater ancient electric powered rocks that's a still a mystery what's going on
And then World 5, where it goes from a Fruity jungle to the Vikings taking all the fruit, smashing them into juice, and then freezing said juice to make more Ice and giant popcicles for some fucking reason.
World 6 is where they took over DK island and made it their new home. Personally i fucking love that every single level is a different world from DKCR
I know the bosses are associated with the Snowmads but those guys aren't exactly helping to take over DK Island. DK is basically beating up neutral characters.
I just assumed they have been living on these islands these for quite some time if they managed to build all this shit.
you enrage him by making him drop his ice cream
as he takes damage over time, his fur turns purple from you dumping his ass into the juice
that boss music
He really is best boss
you don't know what you're talking about. They're better in every way, freeze actually has better music than all rare dk games, and the level designs in both of them blow the original trilogy away which was mostly extremely simplistic platforming.
I always found stickerbrush symphony to be way overrated. I dunno, it's a nice song but there were better tracks from dkc2. Even the first level had better music.
>generally difficult stages, getting all extra stuff without using guide will take a while
>pretty difficult bosses, arguably harder than any from the original 3 games
>balls to the walls extra stages where you have to be constantly moving to not get killed
>kick ass soundtrack
Probably one of my favorite platformers ever honestly. I didn't LOVE Returns, the bosses especially were shit, but TF fixed pretty much everything I disliked about Returns.
>mfw facing against
another monkeyas a boss fight
to me, they feel even better. Rare had a pretty solid feel with the first 3, but there's a level of momentum and stickiness when moving DK around that really adds to the platforming, making it weighty but satisfying. And I do love how momentum really matters in this game, building up momentum for a really long jump in some areas is really satisfying.
>Horn Top Hop
>great music track
>music is integrated with the level elements
>go inside a giant horn where even you movement depends on the music
this game has terrible co-op though
>forced disable of gamepad screen; they didn't even clone the main output
>PICK UP ENEMY/BARREL, GRAB VINE and PICK UP PARTNER are the same button
>screen size doesn't expand when players are a little separated;
>combine the above problems with tricky jump combos over an endless pit
>player 1 MUST PLAY DK NO EXCEPTIONS
>can't switch partner character without dropping and re-adding
>players cannot fire barrels on their own, even in bonus rooms; input is locked until both players are in the barrel / teleport timeout
ironically, some of the boss fights are easier to co-op than the levels because you can actually see both players
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?
>PICK UP ENEMY/BARREL, GRAB VINE and PICK UP PARTNER are the same button
...Have you ever played a platformer before? And anyway, fuck having six different buttons to pick up/grab different things.
>can't switch partner character without dropping and re-adding
Very rarely do any games allow this.
I'm really excited to see what Retro has in store next. I heard the Excite* developers is working on a diddy kong racing game. I kinda wanna know if Retro has any internal IPs brewing up.
totally wasn't expecting that music, but it was hilarious.
Maybe it's the fact that they couldn't reuse background and environmental hazards and get away with it like Rare could. For example, Rare reused assets to make small bonus barrel rooms. Retro just straight-up copied and pasted them.
Fuck that noise.
Let's do something better.
>Donkey Kong Country: Island Invasion
>DK Island is invaded by evil alien swine
>The checkpoint pigs were spies for the alien leader all this time.
>The alien leader is Wizpig
>Taj is now running the shop.
>tfw me and brother beat the game + Final sanctuary levels on co-op
You fucking casuals
if they had given it ~20 hours of proper co-op playthrough they would have seen these issues
that's not asking a lot
broken control scheme is artificial difficulty, no excuses
if I can't perform a critical action because a different action is coded to take priority, there's a problem
plus, 3d world had easy character switching at level start; this could've been loads better
it's terribly frustrating; you have to wait and let your partner complete it or follow immediately after and risk dropping
that's a terrible excuse for a game released in the year 2014
>freezing said juice to make more Ice and giant popcicles for some fucking reason.
They freeze them to eat them. Popsicles are a luxury good, much like bananas. It's like the sugar and coffee trade in Europe.
>try to grab vine in the same location as other player as the level collapses
>oops picked up the player and missed it because I don't have a choice xD
it's artificial difficulty
It doesn't matter if they saw the issue you blockhead, the game was not designed with two players in mind. Fixing those issues would have involved a hell of a lot of work on top of the single-player, even changing how entire levels are scripted, and that's too much work for a game where co-op is just a throw-in.
Just make it yourself.
do you not understand basic tenants of game design?
grabbing player and grabbing object are two separate subroutines that can be mapped to two separate buttons
switching kongs on the map screen would've taken maybe an hour or less to implement
>even changing how entire levels are scripted
what are you even going on about?
Recently replayed it and it's just so fucking good. Probably my favorite 2D platformer of all time. Loved Returns, but this game does everything better
Best music track coming through
Amazing soundtrack in general
>Schorch n Torch
>Viking Island Theme
>got wiiu last week
>love the hell out of it, already beat wind waker hd and have been on and off with mario kart 8 and 3DWorld
>playings some eShop titles like Earthbound, castlevania and superstar saga
>mfw no money for dong freeze
>mfw I just noticed Diddy's cup has his star design on it
>start playing this
>my circle pad is broken, using the dpad gives me hand cramps and my face buttons are worn out
>been stuck on 6-K for 5 months
>awesome boss fights
>platforming is difficult without being frustrating
>Snowmads are creatively-designed and make hilarious noises when you kill them
>underwater levels are actually fun
>Dixie is OP as fuck
>Diddy is practically worthless
>still no Animal Buddies other than Rambi and Squawks, despite a perfect opportunity for Enguarde
Is it so wrong to have had a crush on a video game monkey since childhood?
This is seriously a thing that reoccurred? I remember the frozen bat, the non-moving giant eye robot, and powering the factory back on. Was there anything else as important as those?
While we're on the subject of DKRC, how many times have you finished Mirror Mode? I've finished it three times, once on the original game, twice on the 3DS, and am working on a fourth time also on the 3DS. Jagged Jewels is a bitch, though.
I also wasn't a fan of how most of the puzzle pieces were hidden. Either you had to collect every banana in a specific area (which was kinda tedious since there were bananas fucking everywhere and you would have to stop and check each area to find em all) or you had to complete a bonus room, all of which were, once again, collect every banana in the room, and they were all copy pasted so you would have to repeat them often.
But at this point I'm just nitpicking, the game was amazing.
don't forget his name
6-1 had a bunch of stuff from Level 1, like DK's Hut, those two giant Thugly statues, and two dragon statues
6-2 had the ships
6-3 had the big DK holding a Wii U Gamepad with DK Jr. on it
6-4 was the Bat
6-5 had the forest in general and the totem poles
6-7 had the giant eye robot
and the Diorama for World 6 had Mugly frozen
I kinda liked how the puzzle pieces were hidden. You really had to be attentive to the level or really explore the level to find them all. Although the puzzle pieces in rocket and mine cart levels were pure fucking shit to get. I would miss that one banana then I would have to suicide to get another chance at it
Does it being a smaller screen change much?
Also graphics wise, 3DS is utter shit (they didnt have feet in FEA). Does it still look good?
I dont believe you.
But I really like higher fps, with all the smooth movement. I will probably look up some gameplay of both versions.
How many more levels?
>I dont believe you.
quick google, looks like it's 60 fps
>This game that, despite being donkey kong, constantly makes your stop doing what you want to do to pull levers and watch things happen and shit, which is casual and far too easy and which has foregone the old, beloved enemies for motherfucking penguins, which, like every shitty DK game since the SNES ones, has the style of fucking banjo kazooie is being bought by people.
>No one learned from the last one, which is the worst installment since the fucking DRUMMING game
See this is why we can't have nice things. Instead of complaining when we're given shitty things, we eat it up.
>Also graphics wise, 3DS is utter shit (they didnt have feet in FEA)
They were definitely more interested in making a unique identity for their game as opposed to being the rare games all over again. I commend them for that. They did a great job. I just wish both the kongs and the tikis/penguins had more personality.
The boss themes in TF are fucking amazing. I could listen to them all day and night. Well, these ones anyway:
Punch Bowl = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkxrXWokYqQ
Big Top Bop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkxrXWokYqQ
Mountaintop Tussle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkxrXWokYqQ
>tfw no platformer will ever have the same feeling of weight and speed as Retro's DK
I didn't care for the Tikis too much. I thought the Vikings had the personality suited to invaders. I have no idea why K. Rool wanted the fucking bananas though. He's got some multiple personality disorder or something.
>That feeling when the very last level before the Final Boss is
an Expert Rambi Level
Enguard'e entire concept in the original is to help you move better but more important, Attack while underwater
Diddy and Dixie already fill the roll of mobility while your spin attack and Cranky fill the roll of attacking underwater
Enguarge wouldve been useless
>Frantic Fields has bits of Run Rambi Run in it
I wish this game was longer.
Which character would like to see return in DKC6? I really wish Nintendo would give Retro the greenlight with characters like Candy, Swanky and (maybe)Snyde.
Also, what should they improve in the next game? I'd like to see more collectables and bonus room varieties.
And yes I made this post as an excuse to post Candy
That's not a fanbase. There'd have to be more than three of us.
>complain about casual gameplay in which you're given twice as many hits before you die as the old games
>be called casual
>K. Rool is the main villain again, Kremlings are most enemies
>remaining Tikis and Snowmads ally themselves with the Kremlings
>mix of enemies on some levels
>more playable Kongs, player one not locked to DK anymore
>bring back more animal buddies
>remixes from DKC3 and DK64 too
just take my money Retro
>implying the next DK won't be 64 style
>implying you don't want to see what Retro can do with it.
>used a guide to finish up the puzzle pieces in DKCR
>was rather boring and tedious
>used squawks to locate the puzzle pieces in Tropical Freeze
>had fun pinpointing each puzzle piece despite the fact I knew of their general location
Lesson learned there
>Get to the level that has Stickerbrush Symphony
>Only gets to play for like ten seconds before being hijacked by another song
what the fuck
I'm too prideful to get the easy-mode "find shit for me" item, even if I have 999 coins to blow. I never even bought any of the extra barrels.
You have no idea how many people I would kill to get a Retro made classic N64 style collectathon platformer with art and stages like >>257801525 but on the scale of DK64
I would never stop cumming
even Tooie was damn big. I'd love to see Retro try it but after we got three Primes with the same kind of gameplay I'm guessing if they do DK again it'll be another sidescroller
Game was shit and too easy. I should have known it would be shit, just like Returns.
I really liked 3D World though. Only have Super Mario WiiU/Luigi U, 3D World, and Tropical Freeze.
Except those Kongs in Jungle Beat arent bad
They are masters that DK wanted to challenge
>That ending scene after beating the final boss
>All the Kongs behind you and following you to the podium
Not him, but is hard mode the same shit as the other game where it's just a one heart option tacked on at the end and obnoxious but people insist you have to play it again to have a fair opinion of the game?
>Mario is about the same size as Diddy Kong
>Donkey Kong is about 2-3 times as big as Mario
>most of the bosses in Dong Freeze is about 4-5 times as big as Donkey Kong, who looks puny in comparison
>mfw these bosses are about 8-15 times as big as Mario, dwarfing even the typical Bowser size
What the fuck is up with Donkey Kong being drastically smaller than the bosses he faces? How is an ape that's supposed to be big and strong look like a manlet going against roid-rage titans?
>another Donkey Kong 64
Please no. After 100%ing it I promised myself I would never touch that aggravating game again.
That probably has to do with keeping realistic hitboxes with their prerendered sprites and shit. The boss sizes weren't retardedly significant at least.
K-Rool is only about twice as big, and the only XBOXHUEG boss was the toucan bird head thing.
Donkey Kong never fought any boss in DKC2 and DKC3.
>6 worlds < 11 worlds
>2 players < 4 players
>4 different characters < 5 different characters
>forced to always have the main character < can choose up to anyone
TF and W101 are definitely biggest Wii U must plays at the moment. Between 3DW and MK8, I say it comes down to personal preference. Are you desperate for a good 3D platformer, or do you want a good multiplayer game?
He was even bigger in DK64
I thought 3D World was shit and too easy,
while Tropical Freeze became one of my favorite games.
New U was fine though. It would've been great if the bosses and soundtrack were better
I played the W101 demo like three times and loved it, and MK8 has strong multiplayer.
But Mario and DK are both great single players, right? I love 3D Mario and DK as well.
>hard game> easy game
>beautiful levels> platforms floating in a void
>david wise>decent music
>fun all the time>only fun with friends
So why is Dixie the only female character not to wear pants?
>>being a faggot > not being a faggot
damn you sure got me
>there are people ITT who uses purely Dixie who actually believes they aren't casuals
Disgusting, the lot of you.
>want to fire this up again
>you must update the wii U software
EVERY GOD DAMN TIME
WHY CANT YOU JUST AUTO UPDATE,
Which game is more hardcore anyways, Dick Freeze or Dark Souls?
>Not Dixie doing acrobatic splits
It's part of her character. What did you expect?
What do Sonyggers and Neogaf think of this game? Serious question.
i didnt mean to post than i hope you didnt save that
