What are some instances in games where you fought a desperate last stand against overwhelming odds?
Basically every single mission in this game. Even on the rare occasion that the EDF launches an offensive operation, it normally turns into a brutal last stand ending in tactical retreats.
I want to agree with you but after playing it I really can't.
They're never dire because you and your friend(s) are there and worth literally the entire NPC army and more.
As bad as the voice actors make it sound, it just doesn't feel dire when it's like OH NO THE DRAGON WIPED OUT SQUAD 2, then you kill the dragon in 15 seconds.
>listing singleplayer storymode campaigns as a "desperate last stand against overwhelming odds"
>listing a scripted event the developers intended to be easily beatable as "desperate" or "overwhelming"
what a bunch of casuals
dark souls is a singleplayer storymode campaign nerdo
anything more specific than "the last level in that one game". gotta have at least a story to it. like you got 1 health and gotta kill a million more guys to beat the level. something that makes the event personally hard in that specific situation
RO2 has some pretty good moments
>that feel when you slip into a good position
>that feel when massacring the enemy
>that feel when they find out where you are
>that feel when you empty all the ammunition in your weapons and throw all of your nades and make a final desperate bayonet charge
>playin shootan game
>shootan a guy
>both run out of ammo
>run at eachother with knives
nothing is greater than that feeling. cept for when you 2 are the last 2 people alive. holy shit that feels great
>killing the giant dragon in 15 seconds
maybe you should stop playing on easy
Technically the entire game counts as a desperate last stand since humanity has no way to escape the ravager attacks. their only option is to desperately try to fight an opponent that in all honesty would be impossible to defeat without the help of player characters. Even with the defeat of the earth eater, humanity is still fucked due to its massive losses, the impossibility of completely removing the giant insect infestation, and the eventual return of even more powerful ravagers.
>Continents map, 6 continents
>obviously I don't suck cock, so I'm exploring the entire world while everyone is still in the classical/medieval age
>I'm HRE, Aztecs are in the game and they're only slightly behind me.
>Start invading countries to get Domination victory
>they do it soon as well
>Soon, the whole map is divided solely between us
>Montezuma has declared war on you!
>I have no navy, they have a huge one
>They take everything outside of my home continent, as I rush for a cultural victory
Too may on Warband, the most recent was a huge chunk of Orcs and Uruk Hais, around 120 against my 60 or so Rohan.
I also have some carpets to share
>What are some instances in games where you fought a desperate last stand against overwhelming odds?
THE STRONGEST MAN ALIVE IS THE LAST MAN STANDING
Just to show you the numbers
ArmA 2 Insurgency
>for around 6 irl hours me and my ragtag squad have been tearing shit up behind enemy lines in Russia against insurgent players
>nothing more than a few short firefights that we win because we have the advantage when it comes to firepower
>whenever a Russian takes a pot shot at us with his dinky hunting rifle we light up the area with machineguns and rockets
>eventually we link up with the main NATO forces
>it's a good few groups of US/Brit troops there must be at least 30 people here and we have our group of Czech troops about 6 people strong
>we're all chilling in a church surrounded by hills and forest
>shot comes from a hill overlooking church and US dude goes down in one shot
>sad that buddy died but we're not too worried it's probably just one or two faggots taking pot shots at us
>machineguns suddenly open up on our position
>friendlies dropping left and right
>RPGs whizzing over the church
>injured are being dragged to one end of the walls that surround the church so that they can be treated
>dudes bleeding out while they're lying there
>everyone's freaking out at the size of the battle on our hands right now
>insurgents must have gathered together and took the chance to attack while we were all in one spot
>grab two buddies and head outside the church taking cover behind a wall
>we're going to fire a few rockets into their position to mess them up as best we can
>we all fire our rockets at their position but they fall flat
>silence for a few moments
>hear this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ttkyRyGdh8
>kills one buddy instantly
>knocks me on my ass
>blacking out as friend carries me back to the church
>he gets nailed in the back as he's carrying me
>he dies instantly and drops me in the field
>mfw waking up to find all of the corpses
The best experience i've had in vidya
I remember playing this as Rohan as well, but I eventually quit after getting tired of having to chase down about 100 Wargs that were running a muck with their masters dead. Did they fix that shit or do you still have to chase them after every battle for 30 minutes?
It's pretty good, fall of the samurai is also great even though I don't really like guns and it's easy to cheese them with cannons.
pic related, the AI is dumb as a fucking brick, as always. Still a pretty good game though.
I wouldn't say I was desperate, but my GPU Vram sure was.
>army with troops accompanied by another army of cannons
>every siege is just me sitting around watching my cannons wrecking their entire base then moving my army in and killing any survivors
FotS siege is a joke if you just bring enough cannons.
SupCom. Fucking SupCom. Both SP and MP actually, campaign in Forged Alliance had a couple of missions that threw a lot of shit at you, but nothing beats FAF group MP for that, with the 500 cap limit fixed and put up into the thousands. I'll always remember a random 3v3 where both my teammates got taken out and it was just me with ludicrous waves of units coming in.
I lost unsurprisingly but I was playing cybran and managed to fight a battle of attrition and delay barely long enough to pull off a telemaser and at least take one of the others with me.
>That is why you kill the mount not the rider
Try telling my AI army that. I had learned after like the third battle to put my fucking lance right into the Wargs and let my riders mop the fallen riders up, but fuck the AI never seemed to understand that. Every battle would last an hour just because we had to chase the fuckers down all day.
we had pretty long coop mission, but designer forgot ASR AI mod allows AI squads to call each other for help, if they're within radio range
> playing coop ArmA2 + ACE + ASR AI + TPW Supression, no respawn
> objective is to secure 3 villages along same road
> US Army 12 men + Bradley, supported by UK 8 men + Warrior
> entering second village, some fortifications and technicals
> when inside village, suddenly tanks
> In few seconds Brad gets insta-killed by T-72, Warrior takes out T-55 and dies from RPG-7
> T-72 gets closer while we hide best we can. one of ours rushes through open with Gustav and fire from ~10m at it side armor and gets knocked out by explosion
> T-34 gets late for the party
> we have no AT left, Brits are tied on other end of village
> SL tells everyone to throw smokes, engineer runs to tank, put satchel, arms it and runs back
> T-34 is history
> seem like random patrols came to support village defences
> we can hardly come out of cover, just to fire few potshots before beign supressed
> village defenders supported by patrols massing in village, are pushing us really hard
> low on ammunition, many use captured FALs, AKs and PKMs
> someone radio enemy contact south
> look that way, and see raghead soldiers with M16s on nearby hill, hiding inside tree line
> Taki Special Forces
> 7 men still standing, all more or less wounded
> someone reports plane
> someone else "Game over man, game over!"
> treeline covered in chain of explosions
> it's friendly! Motherfucking A-10!
> Acting SL tells to laze hill for LGB
> maybe 50m from me
> vision swaying, hear only whistle
> WHOOOSH!!! WHOOOSH!!
> we manage to break off, while village is getting leveled
> SL tells us that's it for today
> result: mission failure
> casualties: 17 men and 2 armored vehicles, total 23 men killed.
> survivors: 3
When I was still playing GW2 I would very frequently be the only one left alive in a wide variety of situations, and I would either have to revive everyone or down the boss myself.
I didn't fail very often, Guardian 2gud
Same thing in PvP when I was a bunker, stopping 3 or 4 people from capping a point made me feel like a fucking hero.
Starcraft, I think second or third mission of Terran campaign.
Starcraft Broodwar last mission of Protoss campaign.
Warcraft 3, last mission of Night Elf campaign.
Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty last mission and one of the Protoss missions.
I should be a bit more honest.
It still is only 20 units against 20, but it was a never ending stream off reinforcements when some would rout. As such it took a long time to finish and the processing of bodies on the ground, damage to buildings, other calculations, etc. left the game a bit laggy towards the end.
Funny you should say that. Apart from playing it for about 20 minutes when I first installed it, I haven't been able to even start it up even once since then as it just crashes on startup.
Arma 3 has some pretty intense battles of your 30+ man platoons fighting in an Area of Operations.
>That moment when your enemy sends the first volley at your shields, and you pray they hold.
>That moment when of joy when they do.
>That moment of terror when the second volley brings them down.
Fuck I loved SupCom.
I get this a lot in Mount and Blade, especially with this one mod (Floris?) that causes bandits to group up. Best feeling I ever had was winning a 100 v 1000 situation, it was insane. Dust being kicked up everywhere by charging cavalry, bodies piling up all over the place.
>Starcraft Broodwar last mission of Protoss campaign.
Oh shit I remember, that was glorious. Trying to hold everything off and keep what really is the last of your race alive until they can finally get everyone in and, with the battle ongoing right around them and even more shit inbound activate the super and cleanse the entire world.
Too bad everything went to dogshit with WoL.
I think the Warcraft 3 final mission is the only real time I've seen it done well. Which is funny, because I was sort of miffed at the time and was hoping for an epic base clash battle, but I think in retrospect they'd given us something more memorable.
A great reminder that Rome 2 is now fixed.
>End of second mission
If you didn't order your squad to slice all three consoles at once while you single handedly held off the invading droid forces, you don't know SHIT about being a commando
>mfw fighting my first troll
If only someone would have warned me. I thought if I stayed far away and used my spear on the fucker he'd be done for. No one fucking warned me about that shit.
Almost lost this battle.
Check out the bodies EVERYWHERE
lord of the rings conquest aka the best lotr game
FREESPACE 2 nigga. It's basically OP's post summed up.
>forest map, militia vs russians
>clanbuddy teaching me basebuilding
>on a roof of the mansion complex on the hill, building AT
>suddenly motor souns
>we go to the edge of the roof, see an enemy supply truck in the distance
>start taking potshots for shits and giggles at the driver who started building a FoB
>he shits himself and gets in the truck, starts the motor
>one of us hits him dead in the eye
>we reminisce on how awesome we are
>SUDDENLY TANK SHELLS
>completely destroys our emplacements
>we hit the deck while being hammered from the tank
>solid snake our way back down and into the yard when the shelling stops
>get to our own supply truck, stock up a medic and an AT kit, still on all fours
>while DISREGARDING COMPLETELY the 8 fucking guys across the yard searching for us
>we leg it back into the mansion under fire, sprint for the roof
It's worse with the armored ones. They have an special name.
Bioshock 2's endfight, if only it was a bit more difficult.
You are cornered in a room, can not retreat and tons of enemies are coming in and trying to attack you. I didn't really appreciate it at first because I was hoping for a proper boss fight, but this was actually better than the Atlas fight in 1.
It still has bugs all over the fucking place, though. It is still the best LotR experience you can get in any game even to this day. Play a Rohan campaign faggot, you won't regret it.
Aww shit is that sum heavenly sword??
muh nigga, that game did not deserve the hate it got. Even today the visuals hold up pretty well, and the story is great.
The gameplay does feel a bit rusted tho.
Kingdom Hearts 2, Battle of 1000 Heartless
(but really even on proud mode that shit was easy as fuck if you just spam reaction commands)
I was being ironic, posting a screenshot demonstrating that the game is still broken in some aspects. In this case I was able to hold off a naval assault simply by circling the enemy ships until the timer ran out.
It's pretty much playable now though, just not very good.
I didn't know this shit was in the game, thank fuck I didn't roll a Gondor game.
T-they are only in Gondor lands, right? r-right?
well yeah everyone expected the "only other hyper-lethal spartan other than master chief that you hear nothing about in the later games" to die, but the way they executed his death and even the death of your teamates leading up to it was fucking top notch, fuck the hate, reach was one of my top halo's
>ArmA 2 Domination
>Team is trying to take port city
>They're fucking cornered on the god damn water tower
>Luckily the AI aiming is horrible, but they'll all be fucking dead soon
>They call for somebody from the team to help
>Get in Osprey
>Fly to the city, jump out just before I'm over the city, Osprey crashes into a building killing a very large amount of AI
>I parachute and land up on the water tower
>We have just enough time to go down and destroy the building and take over the city
>AI is still everywhere
>We make a break for the forest where a helicopter picks us up
>Everybody sings songs of praise to me on the way back to the base
>tfw felt like a hero
>Not bringing the fight to the zeds.
You're all fur-coat,no knickers, bitch.
shit man do you know how fucking rare it is to see somebody mention dominions anywhere ever? I remember fighting an army of c'tis as pangea and fucking getting the shit kicked out of me. ended up building an army of dryads for smite at my capitol while using scorched earth to get tons of the servants of the pan mages. eventually i counterattacked and killed the fuckers skellingtons and undeads with like two hundred priests. fights lasted over an hour because of all the spells.
>Download Mountain Blade Napoleonic Wars.
>Join 15th Siege Bots Vs Humans Server
Enjoy your epic last stand forever so long as competent human bot commanders are playing.
>no mention of AI War
You are the last of the human resistance against an AI that is stronger and smarter than you at all times, fights are 1:100 at best, many things you do will bring down the AI's terrible wrath upon you, with some game options making them send absolutely everything they have against you. This game isn't about seeing how humanity triumphed over the AI, but how they became extinct.
>superior in any way
The sound of friendly BRRRRRT when all hope is lost in ArmA gives me a serious war boner.
>hit the deck on the roof
>the search team did not pursue
>buddy bites a bullet
>I revive him
>peek out, bite a bullet
>he switches kits, revives me
>we get on opposite ends of the roof, peek out at the same time
>the sniper is ON THE NEIGHBOURING ROOF
>LOTS OF FRAGS
>turns out he was there with a spotter, both choked on my frags
>we lie flatter than a flounder on the roof and wait
>motors come near
>IN THE FUCKING YARD
>INFACT 2 TANKS
Is it actually possible to fight all the enemies for as long as you can or is it "Scripted" to go into a literal laggy shitstorm after a few minutes have passed?
Don't remember how long I lasted but I remember lasting for more than 15 minutes until too many flanked me and ran out of ammo too fast.
>later turned out there was an APC too but the retards incapacitated it on the way up by driving off the cliff
>tanks stand there cleanly beside each other, clearly nobody warned the fuckers that the area isnt clear
>buddy unzips AT
>peeks out, slams the AT right into the sweetspot, tank disabled
>the other one immediately starts to hammer away at our roof
>we crawl to the other side of the roof and wait until the hammering stops, and then some
>he unzips, peeks out and plants the rocket right into the track like a faggot
>meanwhile some crazy retard from the squad we joined to get the good shit came all the way here, sneaked on the tank and dropped an AT mine right on top of it
>like, he climbed on the tanks and dropped the mine on his feet
>BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE
>all these total war fags thinkan being outnumbered 2 to 1 in a fortified position is a last stand
Get on my level
It was my
firstgame in CK2.
Almost the entire Spellforce is like that. Try it, id you don't abuse some mechanics it's really intense.
infested planet is pretty fuckin sweet and is basically an entire game CENTERED around this very idea, on sale on steam atm too
control a squad of upgradable dudes and fight back huge swarms of xenos.
ARMA 2, MOTHERFUCKERS
>Mission has gone to shit, we have buses and Lee Enfields against swarms of AI with AKS-74Us
>Eventually manage to secure a small compound, all of command is dead so we agree to make for the buses and exfiltrate
>We all load up and are about to leave but hear radio traffic on the edge of 343 range, can't make anything out but it proves that we have other survivors
>My FTL decides to head back and repair another bus we took in to try and find them
>He gets out and walks back since the town is clear, we start to depart
>Barely get 20 metres before we hear a whole heap of gunfire and my FTL gets halfway through a contact report before getting cut off
>Bus is stopped while we argue about what to do
>Everybody else decides to leave him
>Fuck it, I jump out as we begin to drive away
>Sprint back to the compound under heavy small arms fire
>Pick off three of the fuckers on my way with my M1911, aint got no time for bolt-action
>Eventually find my FTL bleeding and in pain, changing a tyre on the bus
>He passes out the moment it's done, I load him in
>Fucking pedal to the metal, getting shot at by at least six guys while plowing through walls and fences
>Floor it back to base, arrive about the same time as the first bus
>They took a couple casualties on the way over, I made it without a scratch
Nothing like some ArmA to get the emergent story juices flowing.
>shogun 2 total war
>3 ashigaru bowmen, 1 ashigaru spear, 1 samurai retainers
>defending against a full stack army
>use every last arrow to whittle down the enemy
>try to hold the last gate
>enemy breaches gate, walls on other side of courtyard being scaled by the enemy
>morale low all around
>enemy starts to break
>micromanaging samurai retainers to hold for as long as possible
>end up breaking the enemy's morale
>they rout even though their force outnumbers me by more than 3:1 at the end
>only 16 of my men survived at the end
>heroic victory, one of the surviving 16 became a general
>we solid snake back to the supply truck, and switch kits
>solid snake back on the roof
>suddenly hear boots and voice commands
>the retards that lost the APC catched up
>suddenly a grapling hook lands right in front of my face
>some retards starts climbing, and gets a bullet in the dick
>guys start climbing, we pick em off one by one, the second to last gets my buddy, I finish the last one off and revive him
>we have like 6-7 corpses here, the guys on the ground start getting REALLY pissed, running noises and voice commands everywhere
>we loot the corpses and start wailing down like mad
>in the process we kill like 3 more guys
>we get down to the 2nd floor
>OPERATING LIKE ITS RAINBOW FUCKING SIX HOLY SHIT BACK TO BACK BADASS
>sneak our way to the staircase, some faggot starts shooting my buddy, I flank him and shoot him in the face with my looted shotgun
>we stay still for a minute
>we run out of the building
>I decided to look at the leaderboards for shits and giggles
>0 players on enemy team
>2 retards with a mosin and a PPsh fucked them so hard they ALL FUCKING RAGEQUIT
best game of my life
I had a similar situation back in Medieval: Total War (the first one).
I was playing as the Byzantine Empire. Mongols invaded with thousands of heavy cavalry (three or four full armies). The very first region they invaded I just happened to have a fully stacked army of Byzantine Infantry (the "filler" unit of the Byzantines in that game).
The battle map was heavily forested, luckily. My rank-and-file non-professional army wiped the floor with the Mongol horde. I think I had around 300 survivors. The enemy lost thousands of elite cavalry.
>rising storm - a mod for red orchestra 2
>playing as allies and you're out of reinforcements
>you and some guys left against 32 japs with 100+ rein
>very loud screams: "TENNO HEIKA BANZAAAIIIIII!!!!"
>amazing, tense moment
>kill two dozen or so enemies
>running low on ammo, run out into the fog to find some weapons
>round a corner
>Grunt ambushes me from behind
>A fucking Grunt
>"Rising Storm is a stand-alone expansion pack/*total conversion modification* to Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad"
It started out as a mod anyway then Tripwire helped out. Who cares?
I can't remember its name or the context but there's a mission in AoE3 where you fight off an unstoppable army of Russians. I think you're meant to blow up mountain passes or something but I used to just try and hold out for as long as possible.
and now for statistics:
>Time without respawning
2 squads plus assorted vehicle crews
1 sniper-spotter team
surprisingly it was Tropico
>playing commie president
>shit all over people
>forests full of rebels
>suddenly army mutinies
>5 loyalists vs 9 traitors
>all loyal soldiers get whipped out and 7 traitors remain shooting on my villa
>suddenly 1 soldier arrives on the boat that I ordered before
>kills all traitor scum
Dawn of War 2
>Deployed to Typhon Primaris to destroy a tyranid hive fleet
>Force Commander Hair gel, Tarkus, Avitus, Thaddeus, Cyrus, and Davian Cool, alongside Imperial Fuard contingent
>Fight through constant waves of tyranids to administer toxin into hive tendrils
>Battle Barge Armageddon destroyed in orbit, Litany of Fury lost in the warp (or some shit)
>Make last stand against something like 25 waves of 'nids, no hope of escape or reinforcements
Of course, them Gabriel Angelos shows up and robs us of glorious deaths in the Emperor's name.
>tfw the joy of 1v7 in red alert 2 against all brutal enemies
>the fear put into your heart when you hear every 15 seconds KIROV REPORTING knowing fully well that your end is coming
how is arma 3? I never played a single arma game.
the most 'realistic' shooter I enjoyed was badcompany 2. but that screenshot you posted looks so cool. is there a singleplayer? Is it worth it?
