>>267465927 If Dream Team had fewer tutorials I think it could have given SSS a run for its money. As it stands, DT was still great (those butter smooth well animated sprites mang) but I think SSS still reigns supreme.
>>267468768 But most of them aren't. I was overjoyed to see them being able to be skipped in the later part of the game, only for them to immediately dump a tutorial afterwards that isn't able to be skipped at all.
Either way, skipping holds true for all games (you can skip everything that's not a minigame in SSS, say).
>>267466293 That's an unfair thing to say. The only way for someone to know about this kind of inside joke through this website is to either ask directly or look for someone who actually answers when someone else asks, and if everyone has that "I'm not telling you, find out yourself" attitude, they'll never fucking find out about it
But IMO BiS has to many boring minigames that were multiple times during the storyline, Mario and Luigi parts inside bowser were a little boring and some Giant battles were the incarnation of glitch (using fire was almost impossible during the Fawful train battle)
The only thing that DT does bad are the tutorials. Everything else is simply good. However I noticed that BiS fans are really obnoxious and most of the time can't accept that a game can do something better than "the game of muh husbando" (well except SSS).
>>267470351 You need to count in that DT is the fourth game in the series, and simply doesn't deliver at all. What's with nintendo games being judged on equal footing and not as sequels? This is why people have gripes with nintendo in the first place, the games have varying quality from ok to great but only rarely a sequel truly delivers and blows the predecessor out of the water. Considering this, I believe dream team to be an embarrassment and the series to be disappointing. I don't see the point to play anything after SSS because the sequels are not better by any means and not unique enough to give a new experience. It's mostly that the gimmicks are the selling point, and that's just sad.
>>267473481 >>267473432 Gotta add to be fair, actual gay characters in Japan are much rarer than trans characters. It's a pretty damn homophobic country all in all, so usually when you see it it's played for laughs, not seriously.
>>267473658 >Luigi's Mansion diorama comes on Club Nintendo >First good reward in years >it's 1500 fucking clams >scrounge up all the loose games I haven't registered >manage to get up to 1000 but still not enough >it gets sold out >it was limited and will never ever be avaliable again You don't know pain. At least you eurofags have rewards to spend things on. I still have those coins sitting in my account for like a year with nothing to use it on.
>>267474352 >>267474459 I don't know where you live, but the star catalogs are split up (for some reason). The Yoshi thing is the first decent reward in fucking years here. They're still selling Wii Points.
>>267479585 >visuals Not really, the environment looks like shit in both the dream and normal world. They used some washed out colors. BIS has the good old colorful sprites everywhere. Dream Team has also too many tutorials and too much handholding and that's for the fourth game in the series on a new handheld.
That image just gave me flash backs to when I was a kid and liked to pretend I was Yoshi. I remember sitting in class in second grade and thinking the holes in the back of the chairs was for my hole to go into. I remember thinking that if I was the only Yoshi in class that it would be super embarrassing having a tail when no one else did. And that's only making me remember more shit from my childhood. I just remembered trying to get my friend to call me Yoshi and ride on my back the one time he came over to my house.
>people pretend to enjoy DT's combat >boss fights literally boil down to shitty gyroscope minigames Hahaha good one friends! It's almost as fun as those epic minigames in BiS! I sure love pointless 2D platforming!!
DT barely beats out BiS for doing its concepts in a more interesting way for the majority of the game, plus the great setting, but the pacing is fucking glacial and I was pissed off about how they treated Antasma.
Wario's fallen on hard times, his castle is repossessed. He decides to rob Mushroom Castle, but comes across Mario and Luigi. While they're fighting (which is the tutorial) Bowser swoops in and defeats them from behind before taking Peach. Toadsworth, in desperation, promises Wario a handsome reward for Peach's rescue. Wario, sensing an opportunity for a reward, the restoration of his pride of being the stronkest in the land, and the prospect of additional loot from Bowser's castle, agrees; however, he wants all the reward for himself, so begins scheming for a way to remove Waluigi from the picture - not knowing that Waluigi has had the same idea. So begins a journey of alternating between brofists and backstabs, teamwork and teamkills, and ripping off every dumb schmuck they run into along the way.
>>267480534 This. Super Star Saga was something special, but every game that came after it just seems to be a water-down disappointment that's "almost" as good. BiS is a perfect example, they figure out people liked Fawful, so they shoved him down our throats in the most overdone way possible. On top of that, half the game lacks the charm the first game had, that shitty yellow star character is incredibly predictable, shallow, and unlikable for example.
The games are only really seen as good because people are just thankful they aren't as shitty as PiT. They have the same amount of complexity, but are somehow bloated with so much more tutorials, and halting walls of text / exposition. The gameplay feels like they're scrambling to figure out what they did right with SSS and failing ever so slightly every time. On top of all of this, you have a series that can't even surpass the original game in multiple installments, and with 2 full console hardware upgrades.
>>267467041 Are BiS and DT really that bad? I've only played SSS and PiT, and the latter was so bad that I just lost interest in the series. I heard BiS was actually good, could never be bothered to playing it, but if it's worse than PiT... I guess that means SSS was just a one hit wonder and the series as a whole is crap with one exception.
>>267494531 Some guy decided to falseflag and samefag his own posts to make a epic maymay. The epic maymay got posted in reddit/4chan page and it became famous on the internet because its just another of those "LOL ONLY IN 4CHAN".
It was never funny, but /v/ is full of try hard kids who want to fit in no matter what, so thats why you see "haha" every time a yoshi is posted.
>>267491649 >>267494717 I was pretty much just speaking on the first 3. I got through most of BiS but I lost interest when I picked other games and never felt the need to finish it. You could argue something like >>267494896 and say they "aren't bad" but they're mediocre to the point where the only reason to even pay attention to them is because they have Mario characters. Aside from that, they don't really offer much of a unique experience that you couldn't just get from playing the first one.
>>267495046 Essentially this. What makes it even more embarrassing is that the meme was something obscure that nobody really payed attention to, then a long while after it explodes and not a single thread that involved Yoshi didn't also have "haha" shitposting in it. Coincidentally if you googled it at that time, it was right around when the shitty meme finally got it's own KYM page, so that gives you an idea of who really finds this shit funny.
>>267495197 I agree. I appreciate the main Mario games like 64, Sunshine, Galaxy and World because each title is really unique. I just can't appreciate the new super mario series or the Mario RPGs. If the series would consist of Mario RPG, Superstar Saga and Thousand Year Door it would be god tier tough.
>>267495703 You should really give NSMBU/NSLU a shot. I've been playing Mario games for nearly 30 years and those two together, besides being worlds better than other "New" titles actually are on par with Super Mario World.
>>267496105 Seriously. I'd say that besides Final Fantasy 2, it was the least enjoyable RPG I've ever beaten. Especially when you remember what a terrible addition the babies were, and how battles boiled down to the shittiest and most repetitive bro moves, combined with annoying boss attacks.
>>267496003 NSMBW, NSMBU, and NSLU are great. Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is also great, but of course that one isn't official.
NSMB and NSMB2 were garbage. I guess the series can only be shit on handhelds. I initially ignored NSMBW for a time, because I bought NSMB day one and it was trash. It was the first 2D Mario game in years, and everyone was rabid, but I was still thoroughly unimpressed.
The same thing happened with Super Mario Galaxy, to a lesser extent. I was pretty meh with the first game, I didn't expect Super Mario Galaxy 2 to win me over. But since NSMBW was so much better than the DS game, I thought maybe the sequel to Galaxy would be much the same and I should take a chance. And I'm glad I followed my gut with that one.
>>267496789 >too much hp >too much damage I take it you don't necessarily share those opinions, but that's a contradiction if I ever saw any. Anybody who genuinely holds BIS as a far superiour game care to reply and explain?
>>267497408 The game's not much shorter than any other in the series. Why are the babies annoying? Going on a limb here, but do the babies also make you dislike Yoshi's Island (the game, not the PiT level)?
>>267496789 >it's good but /v/ hates it The obligatory excuse anyone uses for liking a mediocre game. The most repetitive battles, unsatisfying bosses, mediocre music, the game feels padded overall when you combine this with the fact that most of the puzzles are just things like sending the babies somewhere to avoid enemies and hit a switch with a hammer. If your idea of a fun boss is knocking a green shell back and forth by alternating buttons and repeating upwards of 10 times then you probably have some sort of mental defect.
The game isn't "shit" but hardly worth a play, if there was a random NIS RPG with the exact same mechanics and anime aesthetics it'd immediately be labelled as shovelware.
>>267496789 >>267496625 It's alright. It's pretty linear and there's not much outside of the main areas compared to SSS or Bowser (Havent played Dream Team). It's also pretty short, and the Bro items do deal tons of damage, but the only enemy with lots of HP was the final boss, so the bro items are pretty broken in that sense.
>>267497854 Every single boss had its HP doubled to prolong the battles. Also did the first game had any sidequests? I seriously can't remember. I'm remembering everything you do, but it's all to advance the story.
>>267497375 NSMB was garbage on DS, which made me sad. I too bought it day one because it was the first 2d Mario in about a decade. It was slow and floaty and just felt safe. I won't say it was soulless, because that's a complaint that I think is overused and under explained.
NSMB2 had potential and it was squandered. The actual platform mechanics felt okay (way better than the first NSMB) but the level design was so weak and the gimmick was unnecessary. All a Mario platformer needs in my opinion is rock solid movement physics and top notch level design. Hell, I wish Nintendo had a dedicated team to make NSLU style expansion packs for NSMBU. Use the game as a platform for more excellent 2D Mario content at a reasonable price.
New Super Peach U with levels built around her floating mechanic? Bring it on. $20 for 80+ levels is great value. Plus it affords level designers the opportunity to really go nuts and make hard levels with unique hooks.
>>267468768 You skip like maybe 5 tutorials in DT up until after the second giant fight
I just started playing this thing and Im about to throw it out the window >Explains bros move again >Explains luiginary >explains bros move >Explains hammer >Explains luiginary >Decides to let me figure out luiginary this one time >Explains the next luiginary anyway
>>267494230 >>267498198 Inside Story could have been greatly improved by completely removing Starlow from it altogether. The amount of shitty banter and needless tutorials / explanations supplied by that character made the game so much worse.
>>267498506 oh god yes please get rid of fucking starlow
jesus christ I hate her so much. She's become the "voice" of the bros now because they can't talk for themselves even though in SSS/PiT that's what cut down the dialogue by half and made it feel so faster
>>267495197 DT introduced some good combat mechanics though, namely the defensive action commands. It was by far the best defensive combat in the series, which if it were combined with SSS style Bros Moves, it would have been amazing.
When you really think of the nature of these memes you can easily think of who would be behind them. They aren't intended to be inherently funny, just "jokes" that are only good for shitposting or derailing discussions. Half them are just flatout created just to make people mad or ironically shitpost.
>>267497863 Is a perfect example of this. Then you have games like Borderlands that purposely create shitty meme characters that are meant for you to dislike. Why even bother?
>>267498813 I feel like if I didn't get through about 6 hours of that game at the airport / on the planes I traveled on I wouldn't have even gotten as far as I did. Starlow in general, and the constant monologues from other characters made the game almost unbearable when paired with the tutorials, they took the least pleasant character and gave her the most lines besides maybe Bowser or Fawful. That's another thing that makes the game dreadful, Fawful was fun for the few one liners he had, and just being a cheesy henchman. This game overdoes it so hard that Fawful is annoying by his 4th appearance once his little speech gimmick stops being entertaining. It's as if they heard people wanted Fawful in Smash, so they just dedicated a whole game to him for a maximum circle-jerk. Where PiT was lacking things, BiS' problem was greatly overdoing them. I haven't played Dream Team because I don't wanna play it before I finish BiS, but honestly I feel like if it's just gonna be more of the same like the other two seem to be so I have no motivation to actually buy the game.
In my opinion, if you really wanted something closer to the goofy and quirky atmosphere of the original M&L game, you're better off just playing Earthbound or Mother 3.
the bros usually expressed themselves fine, starlow basically exists for plot purposes in 3 she was bowser's conscious, even though they probably couldve done creative shit with the bros and make it more subtle
in 4 she has to manipulate luigi in sleep, idk how they couldve changed that.
She could do this without blabbing constantly though
>>267500062 it's making me sad that Im developing buyer's remorse over a mario RPG man. BiS wasn't too bad with starlow because seeing bowser argue with his subconscious was funny at some points.
DT it's just stupid, like even after she gains an understanding of the dreamworld she still seems abusive towards luigi for no reason and just stays skeptical of it.
DT just introduced too many mechanics while keeping the old SSS formula of giving a tutorial to all of them. SSS forces maybe 3 tutorials on you while DT forces all but maybe 4-5 on you, and you get one for ANY new mechanic.
I think the game wanted to explain to me how to heal at some point after I had been in several battles already. Did SSS even go that far?
>>267499913 The problem though is the game could more or less function completely the same without Starlow. Realistically her existence is pretty much because Nintendo doesn't just the player to not be retarded and understand what's going on based on visual cues alone.
>Dream Team >spend the whole game hyping up Antasma as a villain even though he doesn't do much for some reason >Bowser betrays him and you kill Antasma in an anti-climax and the final boss is yet another Bowser fight
>>267500442 They're mediocre games that only get attention because of the product name and mario characters, and they essentially rehash from the previous titles while having less depth than the original. What you're saying is that a game like PiT would be good if SS didn't exist, which isn't the case. The fact that SS exist, simply makes the game look even worse.
>>267500743 Given what I hear about Valve playtesters, it's hard to blame Nintendo too much for erring on the side of caution in terms of explaining things, particularly in a game aimed at all ages.
But I will blame Nintendo because kids can be smart and clever and resourceful and figure things out with a gentler guiding hand. They're just contributing to a dumbing down of games with things like Starlow.
They go half and half in letting you skip them, it feels schizophrenic on the design. It seems stupid that I cant skip any of the luiginary ones but I can skip the in battle ones
hell in dream mountain you get a tutorial for the tornado, explaining it clears away snow stacks, then the rest of the area are box puzzles and one screen where snow covers the screen and you have to use it to blow it off
They made a tutorial for a mechanic that doesn't even fucking come up AFTER the tutorial. I could've skipped it and not been any the wiser.
