In the latest issue of Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai speaks up about various returning veterans in Smash Brothers such as R.O.B., Falco, and Dr. Mario. Perhaps most interesting of all, and perhaps surprisingly sentimental, is his explanation of the controversial depiction of the King of Evil himself, Ganondorf:
"Ah, yes. I've gotten many complaints about Ganondorf. Why doesn't he use his sword more? Why isn't he as powerful as he is in Zelda? Well, when I decided to add him in Super Smash Brothers, of course he was a late addition included only because his physical appearance was easy enough to model swap over Captain Falcon. So I couldn't do as much justice as I wanted with him, but I worried people would be upset if I left out such an important and striking character.
Ganondorf is somewhat of a contradiction---in Smash Brothers, he's both powerful, yet sometimes comes across as a little worn down, a little tired. In a way, he was greatly influenced by my late father who passed away shortly beforehand. As a child, I viewed my father as a strict-disciplinarian, a man I both feared and respected. But when I grew up, I realized my father, that man I was saw as a powerful figure---a king---was often out of breath, and limped along. I wondered why I feared him so much? And in a way, that's how I've developed Ganondorf as a character. Personally I'm quite close to the character, and thus I find it difficult to bring myself to change him too much."
Damn it, Sakurai. :(
>I was sick of Mario's FLUDD so I planned to change it in the 3DS/Wii U version but Miyamoto always came to my office and said "No Mashahiro! We're going to make that Sunshine HD remake.. eventually". So that was my only reason he's in really
Thats sad and whatnot (if true) but what a fucking waste of years of material to use for a character just because of 'my feelings'.
I was under the impression that Smash Bros. was a crossover game.
>only source is a Google search result of this thread
I did the same and holy fuck why does this exist
>sakurai's father is the embodiment of all evil
I really, truly wish that accident he had would have killed him. Imagine how much better Smash would be if he was dead and rotting in the ground, maggots and worms crawling through his rotted eyesockets.
Actually one of his custom Neutral B moves DOES have him using his sword.
>Why doesn't he use his sword more?
I don't know why people keep associating Ganondork with swords when he's only ever used them twice throughout the entire Zelda series. Thrice if you want to count a tech demo.
Ganon has always primarily used Magic or a Trident, or both.
Not that anon but
That's why. GanonDORF has only ever used swords when he actually uses weapons. The Trident seems to be a pig exclusive weapon.
Don't get me wrong, I'd fucking love to see Ganondorf using his Trident. I was actually disappointed that SS had Ghirahim as hurrdurr evil Master Sword rather than a Trident.
Are you fucking KIDDING me?
We BOMBED them.
We blew up sky high with a h-bomb.
THEY are evil?
They have a beautiful culture and language, that has existed for centuries, and the fat, pig Americans always come to ruin such beautiful creations of mankind. You can't just say they are evil because of world war 2, why are they evil? They were killing disgusting chinks because they are sub-human, is there a problem with that? No! They are just raising the bar as to what is acceptable to call 'civilization'. Every time I imagine the pacific theatre, I imagine a zero, shooting down a fat American, too heavy to be flying anyways, he was barely able to fit in the cockpit, let alone react to the supreme skills of Japanese warriors.
Nah, man, Japan literally did a lot of heinous things during WWII.
Plus, to be fair, most people agree the bomb probably reduced the immediate amount of casualties by quite a bit...because the Japanese wouldn't give up. Of course I'm not defending the decision, but at the moment I guess it made the most sense.
Of course, they likely didn't know all the long-term effects of radiation though...
>they likely didn't know all the long-term effects of radiation though...
They didn't. If the bombs failed to make them surrender, we were going to march in with zero protection.
>that has existed for centuries
Try millennia ya dinkleberry.
For all the shit weebs harp on Japan for being impressive, I've yet to see one bring up the fact that they've got the longest unbroken dynasty in history.
Do Americans actually get taught this much bullshit in their history classes?
Japan surrendered because Russia declared war on them. There was a lot of suspicion that the US didn't have many of this crazy new bomb, which is why they didn't surrender immediately. Then Russia declared on them and they knew they were fucked.
Obviously the way the Americans showed they were ready to massacre innocent civilians with the firebombings of Europe and the atomic bombs was scary and played a role in Japanese surrender. But it was the Russians that sealed the deal.
God dammit, will SOMEONE take this fucking series away from this man? As if we needed to hear any more reasons as to why he is unfit to make decisions regarding one of Nintendo's flagship franchises.
If we never bombed Japan
We would never have Anime
America once again proving why we are the greatest nation in the world
Literally making the world a better place one step at a time
How can one country be so based?
Listen here, you fucking GAIJINS. You don't know jack diddly shit when it comes to my spiritual heritage ancestry in Japan. I have talked to the ages old emperors of feudal Japan through visions in my dreams. I have a TRUE knowledge of the greatest nation in all of the world's history. They came to ME, to teach YOU why YOU guys are fucking WRONG. I have spent several dozen hours, training in my backyard with my Katana. I can chop you down faster than you can say, 'Omae wa mo shindeiru.' I will be the end of you if you continue to befoul the name of great Japan. You guys should consider yourselves lucky that Japan had ONE slip up in the years it has conquered the cultures of this Earth.
>You guys should consider yourselves lucky that Japan had ONE slip up in the years it has conquered the cultures of this Earth.
Commodore Perry came to me in a dream.
He says Japan a gay.
NO. That is not fucking me, I am 6'8 and 240 Lbs. I would never allow the glorious gift of my own body to become so ungainly, and disgusting. He is obviously unfit to wield a weapon of that caliber. I on the other hand, have been chiseled to the core by my training with the blade. I can tear you in half, with, or without a sword.
>They have a beautiful culture and language
Well, so did Hawaii, but that sure as hell didn't stop them. I'm not sure that nuking them was the right answer, but raping an island base out of fucking nowhere, especially since America had no real fight with Japan yet, was clearly a dick move on their part.
Sorry, wrong pic. This one is the real one.
You are serious? You think Japan just, attacked Clapistan for no full reason? The Americans knew they had it coming. Why even be mad? The Japanese killed some jarheads sitting on some beaches, and low intelligence islanders, who had no concept of what it meant to be 'human'. They were disgusting savages, good on 'em to be dead.
There's also the trident, dud. Learn your Zelda history.
I find it funny that Sakurai decided to model the King of Evil after his dead daddy and make him completely suck. Sakurai must have really disliked his father.
>japan is cooperating with the nazis
>hey let's prevent them from acquiring important resources and expect no consequences
>how dare they attack big brother america we better discipline them
Actually, that's not a bad thing in principal. A lot of people like to be in active threads so knowing which is the most active might improve their 4chan experience.
I use that feature on catalog.neet myself.
Yo. that's touching and all, but don't let your personal life get in the way of an established fucking character. I'lll respect the Ganon in the game, and the way he plays definitely reflects how Sakurai views him, I can clearly see that. But this is mother fucking GANONDORF, not some old man you see in him.
>People complain about the number of sword-based characters saying that there are too many.
>Yet they want Ganon to use his sword.
Can someone explain this hypocrisy to me?
Neutral B : Shockwave - short range 360 enegery attack
Side B : Warlock Ball : homing ranged attack, can be carched for multiple shots but the charge can't be cancelled and carried over like other charge moves.
Up B : Levitate
Down B : Warlock Kick or some sort of rushing attack.
Final Smash : Ganon form
I always think of this picture when playing with Smash Ganondorf. Fist-fighting Ganon is so badass
So Sakurai refuses to change one of Nintendo's most iconic villains because he reminds him of his father? That's a nice way to remember your father, as the fucking Dark Lord that turned Hyrule into a shithole, starved a race, froze the main source of water in Hyrule and ruined Hyrule.
I'm buying this bullshit here Sakurai
Holy shit Sakurai.
I was always hoping each new game that Ganon would keep his clone moveset for my ease of access, then Sakurai rationalizes my shit reasons by dropping a load of deep on us. Man can be a poet sometimes.
It seems like he'd be great with F-Zero. Love to see him do a real racer after Kirby Air Ride, and I think he'd do wonders with F-Zero's unique cast. Only issue is I could see him perhaps "casualizing it", but then again F-Zero is so niche I imagine he won't feel he needs to like he needs to for Smash which reaches a large audience.
Murasame seems like another one, I bet he could turn Takamaru into a pretty slick samurai-archetpye and create a Kamiya-lite style action game.
And for some reason, I'd love to see him have a go with Yoshi.
>not wanting to be associated with the Dark Lord who turned Kakariko into a trendy town to live, gave a ranch-hand a break in life, instituted guards in the Lost Woods to prevent a rise in Stalchildren, and tried to unflood Hyrule and repopulate his race
Go home Zelda.
I'd keep Side-B (the chokehold) and Up-B, but change the Punch and Kick. Make Neutral B a "spirit bomb" like he does in HW, and Down-B a Phantom Ganon that works like Zelda's.
Honestly Sakurai should give Ganondorf a unique moveset, and then give his current one to Hades.
We get a playable Hades, a unique Ganon, and we get to keep badass heavy brawler.
That and dark energy fist fighting seems to suit Hades more. Also sakurai gets to suck more kid icarus dick.
The big guy, the big cheese, the head honcho, the big fella, the host with the most, my main man G-Dorf.
monarchy is silly, especially in Sweden
>Oh, the queen never married and didn't give birth to any heirs
>Fuck looking for distant relatives, let's get some French fuck, everybody loves the French
I was thinking an energy ball with the same slow startup as the punch, as well as a similar animation, but is the size of a full charge shot and can't be reflected or absorbed.
At what point does he hit you with a sword?
OoT Ganondorf isn't so far off from Falcondorf. He even does the down B ground stomp.
The problem is that the current Ganondorf in Smash is the Twilight Princess one, and he exclusively uses a sword.
Why are people seriously responding to the weeb in this thread instead of realizing it's satire
The faggot who had to bite his whole style off of a real man (Captain Falcon) to compete in smash
Ganon as a whole is a mess, and not just in Smash. He used to be this imposing beastman who was a master of magic. Now he's some evil human with a sword that barely uses magic at all, who can occasionally transform into a giant stupid beast for brute strength. Generic shit.
Wind Waker Ganondorf uses two sword. Ganon Ganondorf uses two swords as well. Ganondorf in OOT is obviously a spell caster, the most logical move would be to make him a spellsword like Robin. His Down be would be a shockwave like OOT, His side B a range ball, chargeable, just like OOT. His melee attacks should ALL be with the use of swords, and his grab moves should like like the current side B.
HW gas the best recent depiction of Ganondorf. I cheered when he crashed the party at the Temple of Souls and dominated the southern half of the map in seconds.
Brute swordfighting, magic attacks, and ruthlessness. What's not to like?
It's been an interesting evolution. For OoT they obviously wanted to develop the background of Ganon the evil monster that followers of the series had already slain multiple times, and yet that background has become the foreground.
I really like WW Ganondorf. He's stylish but also seems tired of fighting.
Shredder with Bebop and Rocksteady dynamic.
His story missions are my favorite to play, Zant always talks big but in every attempt finds himself in trouble and begs for help. Ghirahim doing his own thing and capturing keeps in the name of Ganondorf. Truly playing the villain with a crew was a joy.
If Ganon gets a new moveset, it should be as Pig Ganon with the fucking trident.
Shit like a ground slam and an energy ball are far less iconic and interesting than spinning a trident around to summon bats with dark magic, summoning people into another world by hitting them with lightning, teleporting around menacingly, and all of the shit that can be done with a trident as a primary weapon.
Think about it; Smash currently has 0 polearm users in the entire game. Bowser Jr's already been wasted to the Clown Car, so Ganon's really the only person who can some in repping something resembling a spear.
>resorting to using sympathy as a form of damage control
If you ever doubted that Sakurai is a hack, you officially cant anymore.
Would that possibly explain this alt colorswap?
Sakurai is a herofag. He pays no respect to franchises memorable villains, after all most games are only so great because of the villain they set you up against. This holds much more true for games where series will almost exclusively always have the same arch enemy. Having Link without Ganon is ridiculous. As is Mario without Bowser. Where he lost sight of this precedent I don't know, but it's taking it's toll on Smash's hugbox roster.
zelda would still be good without ganon
MC Vaati is the best final boss in the series, OoA's story is better off unlinked, and Link's Awakening is completely unrelated to everything else in the series bar the gameplay, Link, and some enemies
shitty fake article
though i give no shits on the fact he's a Falcon clone, in fact i love him for it - i think the moveset is hilariously fitting for him, i'd like to know why he's hell bent on making ganon a walking punching bag in everything after melee.
i can't do shit with him in brawl, and he's only somewhat better in 3ds/wiiU, where everyone elses buffs put him back at the bottom again anyway.
Ridley, Porky Minch, Black Shadow, K. Rool. Just because a series is not Mario and Pokemon-levels of recognized and popular doesn't mean the other series are super-obscure and no one knows anything about them, especially when these major villains have been referenced and shown throughout Smash Bros' history and their series are at lest fairly well-known.
So he's admitting he's a biased piece of shit? Who'da thought? Thanks for the two new Pit movesets Sakurai, even if they're both really similar to each other and nobody asked for him to get new movesets let alone two, even though people have wanted a unique Ganon since forever.
i cant believe you faggots are eating this up. he should have his personal life and working life separate. we missed on a potential great characters because of his inability to keep it professional.
I'll give you Ridley, but K.Rool hasn't done shit for a long time and DKCR sold well without him, Black Shadow has even less material to work with, and Porky's a coward who you only fought twice. They shouldn't be added for the sake of a franchise rep. I'd rather have Cranky and Jeff before them.
He's been in every single F-Zero game since X on the N64 with a major story in GX, plus he had a trophy in either Melee or Brawl and was the main villain in the anime. So yes, he is pretty well known.
You being ignorant doesn't mean everyone is.
Well, excuse me for not knowing about Japan-only anime fames for the Game Boy Advance. Anyway, F-Zero's current status shows that the series itself, let alone Black Shadow, isn't popular or well-known.
>but K.Rool hasn't done shit for a long time
And DHD, ROB, and Ness haven't done anything for even longer.
>and DKCR sold well without him
And Super Mario RPG sold well without Bowser as the main villain, why's he in Smash?
>Black Shadow has even less material to work with
ROB's a toy, Mr Game & Watch is a compilation of 27 G&W versions, and all DHD does is laugh at you.
>and Porky's a coward who you only fought twice.
And is one of the harder boss battles in Brawl.
>They shouldn't be added for the sake of a franchise rep. I'd rather have Cranky and Jeff before them.
Why? Because that sounds like you just dislike them for the sake of it and would rather see anyone else for the sake of it. Sorry that I and others would like to see the villains of the series alongside the heroes, since the villains are, you know, important to the series.
Besides, Sakurai already throws in characters for the sake of having reps. Look at Dr. Mario, Lucina, Dark Pit, Pichu, Roy, and Bowser Jr.
Gp legend was released in America stupid. The sequel is Japan only. And they're extremely good games by the way. All because YOU don't know about them doesn't mean they aren't known.
Bowser Jr.'s in because he had incredible potential for a moveset and is a more significant character to the Mario series than Rosalina, so Rosalina getting in without him would be silly.
That's the beauty of it. Black Shadow can get Ganondorf's clone moveset and Ganondorf can finally get a Zelda-based moveset. We keep a fun moveset and de-clone the King of Evil.
K. Rool wasn't the villain in DKCR. Bowser wasn't the villain in SMRG. Since both of them weren't villains in one game of a long series, neither of then should be in Smash Bros. That's the logic of "Well K. Rool wasn't in this game so he doesn't deserve to be in Smash".
Hypnosis staggering beam like Mewtwo's.
Similar to Captain Falcon's Up B except it's a grapple - swings the enemy round then slams them straight to the ground.
Something like M. Bison's Psycho Crusher.
Pulls back a little bit then does a full on body press into the enemy - can charge it by holding the button.
And standard moveset I think would be a lot like how his F-Zero car handles in GX. Very 'lanky' and hard to control (even more so than Ganondorf) and hits a lot harder. A lot of his moves would have sweet spots. But the kicker would be he moves just as fast as Falcon.
That's just the concept anyway.
But K. Rool WASN'T IN RETURNS at all. That's the main point.
Bowser arguably got an upgrade in SMRPG to playable status, and was still the main villain of the mainline Mario games.
I've never gotten a reasonable answer to questions like this, it's always personal opinions or shit like "No one knows or cares about them so they don't deserve to be in Smash", which is only a transparent screen for personal opinions.
Why not add another villain instead? Someone more than five people can recognize? Someone that actually fights for one? Someone that isn't one villain in a sea of millions? Someone that can bring something new?
According to /v/ the only villains that fit that are Bowser and Ganondorf. Anyone else is the definition of obscure and unknown and no one cares so therefore they don't deserve to be in the game.
So why not give me an example? F-Zero's the last franchise that needs a newcomer. Show me a villain that has been seen being a villain in the past five years that would be worth adding.
Why is it the last series that needs another rep? Because you don't like F-Zero? Because Black Shadow would take away a spot for someone you want? Because of some other personal reason you have?
Do you want examples of villains in general? Because you should already know several examples in this very thread.
Ridley created a lot of waves through out the years, and people actually know of him because of the Other: M infamous PTSD scene.
King K. Rool of course, he hasn't been seen often but he was Donkey Kong's villain for almost 10 years.
Any of Zelda's 2nd tier villains, Ghirahim for instance was really popular and has an incredible original style but he's not worth a slot apparently.
3rd party villains, Wily and Robotnik are extremely iconic themselves, goes without saying.
Fire Emblem villains or anti heroes, Black knight for example.
Mewtwo was a great villain in melee, and one of the villain trio in the final event battle
King Hippo or Sandman would be a cool heavy weight boxer to rival Little mac.
Wolf's the best choice for Star fox but he's gone now.
Hades. He is too perfect that it hurts that he isn't playable.
People are STILL thinking this is real, God you faggots are gullible as hell.
>Ganondorf, The Dark lord that's the embodiment of all evil, doesn't use a sword because Sakurai's daddy problems.
>Say it's from Famitsu
>Doesn't find an article of this interview
>Doesn't provide a link for the article
Is it that hard anon? You know people make up lies and BS on this site everyday right?
>After his recent statements, can you blame us?
That retards are mad because the new game has three characters they don't like instead of three that they do, completely ignoring the rest of the roster?
>land up tilt on someone who's shielding
>mfw i throw out another up tilt and there's nothing they can do
the range on it is surprisingly big and catches EVERYONE off guard
>They fucking fall for it
