Is there a reason why the spells are called Bufu, Maragi, Ziodyne, Hama, Dia etc.? Is this some kind of obscure phonetic thing, a regional (Japanese) thing or is it just a case of Atlus wanting to be a special snowflake?
Honesty, i had a hard time remembering smt spells.
I had to look at the description 2/3 of the time.
But you get used to it, its actually cool to have new spell names unlike the common fire, blizzard, thunder.
Or even worse
Fucking 10/10 originality at Square.
It's a Mega Monsta Mashup Mix of phonetics and linguistics from all over the world. It includes influences from shit like Japanese and Greek and Nordic. There's rhyme and reason to it, but I doubt you can explain it succinctly. I can't wrap my head around it myself.
So in other words the spells are a mish mash of different regionary stuff, which goes hand-in-hand with the theme of the games with the mixed bag of different deities, mythological heroes, etc.
Each game series prioritizes different regions, like mainline is more Japanese dieties and myths, DDS is Hindu. Can't think of any others off the top of my head at the moment, but I'm sure the wiki mentions it.
My first game was the first SMT. I had to write down what each spell does. Thankfully, SMT1 turned out to be a pretty easy game for being an old-school RPG
Soul Hackers was very Mesopotamian
Mark is superior Inaba, no contest.
I'm honestly serious though that I found token black character a bit more endearing then Masao.
Ohello /V/, my name is J. Hova. I always like to lork at 4cham and I also like cock holds too, as you do. KIKE KIKE LOL. I also like destroying the world for my own gain (HOES DON'T KNOW ABOUT MY CHAOS), get good, try leaping and hate the casuals. Due to the fact that i'm not a noobfag i know that /juegos/ is in possession of a great variety of "KAYOSS", at least those of you that aren't LAW abiding citizends. in a nutshell, I need Anomalous to deliver to an Astrafaglian /re/tard some of his "KAYOSS" (you know what i mean LOL). DON'T LOSE YOUR WALLET. PLEASE DONT MAGE THIS THRED IT IS NOT COPYPIZZA, BUT ORIGINAL COMMENT.
>That digusting symbol is used for the american audiences
I'm currently right before the final boss of the main route, but I'm seriously underleveled with no good Personas because I just had Reiji carry the team. Now I have to grind, shit's annoying
Agi comes from Agni. He's the Junpei-kun in Digital Devil Saga
The game you're talking about has nothing to do with SMT series made by Atlus as we know it. It's just based on the same novels as Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei does.
Just a Japanese attempt to come up with something that sounded exotic, probably borrows a bit from different languages. The whole prefix/suffix thing for different spell levels and AoE was probably just borrowed from Final Fantasy.
Garu is wind, Zan is "force." I think Persona 2 was the only game to have both.
Digital Devil Story was honestly just a pretty tasteless "technology is evil" story about the internet back when it was still primitive as hell. The only thing the SMT series has in common with it anymore is the use of computer programs to emulate magic rituals.
>Complaining about how the spell names in SMT are confusing and difficult to remember
You people don't know how easy you have it. I've beaten this game three fucking times and I still can't remember what any of the goddamn skills do. I'm convinced half of them don't even do a goddamn thing.
I remember reading that some of the spells names have a meaning
Like Hama is a place in the middle east or something along those lines
I also remember reading that megido somewhat means Armageddon
Well that's not hard considering that the source is pulp schlock. I don't think the author ever meant it to be high culture. Atlus took the source material and matured it a bit so that's nice.
Spell names from simplest to most complicated
>suffixes based on tier
>based off English words anyway
>prefixes based on tier and and suffixes based multi or single hit
>foreign words, but short base names
>moves have loose tiers
>no base names or suffixes
>certain attacks are only named based on damage type
>shit nigga what are you doing
But it does make for entertaining trash.
Can we really consider Pokemon as more complicated than SMT? The skills are more often than not rather self-explanatory based on their names. If not then they also give you numerical documentation on how they function.
MegaTen is a bit more bscure in this regard.
Of course it's hard to remember if you're not familiar with the series.
DQ spells didn't make sense to me until I played a good bunch of DQ games.
SMT spells didn't make sense to me either until I played through half the series or so.
Once you notice the pattern in spell names then it's clear as day.
Meanwhile pokemon has shit like ember, razor leaf, water gun, metal claw, gust. Stuff that is clear as day.
I believe it's two things: A matter of translation and a matter of HOW MANY FUCKING MOVES THERE ARE.
I remember having a Japanese Copy of Pokemon Gold, and some moves shared some words in their names, tho I don't remember which. I think it was the Beam trio (Ice Beam, Flamethrower, Thunderbolt)...
Bufu, blue, ice, ice is blue
Zio, zap, lightning goes zap
Agi, AGGGHEEEY, the noise you make when being lit on fire
Garu, GAAAWOOOOO, the sound wind makes.
Honestly, it's pretty simple.
>Agi, AGGGHEEEY, the noise you make when being lit on fire
Eh, you didn't really have to worry about the spell fragments that much, since getting recipes automatically filled it in, and the completed spells had normal names. Upgrading the spells only required you to PARGON PARGON PARGON PARGON PARGON.
I wonder what would happen if they allowed us to use any spell via the 9-point circle in Ehn'gha. I wonder what pargoned up Chattur'gha Restore would do, heal the whole world? Also, why not just cast Bind or Attack on the city and fuck all those Guardians and Pious up?
Thanks, you made me remember that is actually ReitoBeamu (I think).
Fubuki is Blizzard and Jibaku is FUCKING KILL YO SELF IN AN EXPLOSION.
In hindsight the names are just as... special in Japanese.
*canned audience laughter*
>Quod Superius Macroprosopus Quod Inferius Microprosopus
Which is "as above, so below"
Which is what YHWH is
A Kabbalistic acronym for "You, O Lord, are mighty forever."
>Alpha and Omega
Which are used as Christian symbols
>Templar crosses(?) and two other symbols
And what's the face in the middle?
>And what's the face in the middle?
Loki. He was the main villain in the very early games and original book.
>crying about PS4
Enjoy having roughly a quarter of your skills be useless at any given time thanks to the monster/robot split
>The game you're talking about has nothing to do with SMT series made by Atlus as we know it.
This is such bullshit and you know it.
>demon summoning program
>demons hailing from the demonic plane which are derived from various mythologies
>main characters are the hero, the love interest, and three antagonists
You're talking to a board that can't even wipe its own ass without begging for help.
To use a more accurate video game analogy, can't even name a character without begging for help after musing over potential options for hours.
Soul Hackers is very playable
and even sorta easybut I don't know if it counts since it's an improved rerelease.
why´d an archangel have a skill called serpent of sheol? it doesn´t make sense , sheol is basically the primitive hell
the first "SMT" game i played was Persona 4, and for a long time i thought the healing spell Media referred to using actual media, like music or portable TV, shit like that to heal eachother, since the cast was all teenage power and stuff. Completedly went over my head with dia.
Soul Hackers is my favourite SMT now
Hugh/Huey is outrageously broken in the remake.
>they will never finish translating it
A lot of Phantasy Star stuff is just German filtered through Japanese before it hit English.
When I first started out with MegaTen, I had difficulty remembering which of Tarukaja, Rakukaja, and Sukukaja affected which stat, or if it was -kaja or -kunda that did the buff or debuff and vice versa.
I got it down during Nocturne because a good portion of that game is buff -> debuff -> win, but during the Persona games I had to check what they did every time.
>tfw you find out Heat was the bad guy in the original timeline
>mfw Serph speaking
Serph did nothing wrong
apart from unintentionally damn humanity.
The main powers are always ambiguous. Some characters are not. Pic related.
Nah, Dogi had his spinoff game already.
Geis needs one based on his own travel journal he wrote to counter Adol's books.
Geis starring in Ys Gaiden: Why I'm so Great.
Have I got the game for you!
>That moment when you realize what certain words, prefixes and suffixes mean and you can instantly tell what a spell does without reading the description
In SMT4 at least, he was fairly neutral. He recognized that the Archangels were complete psychopaths, and decided to do away with them in a way that benefited himself. He has humanity's best interests in mind, but has his own interests at a higher priority.
say what you will about how casual it was and how bullshit the story was but the concept art was fantastic
>tfw terada will never work on zelda or ff again
>He has humanity's best interests in mind
Yes... good goy...
Replaying Strange Journey right now. I completely forgot why I dropped this game, but I know I didn't know what the fuck I was supposed to do.
I just want to keep Pixie around forever, but summon space is getting tight at times. At least she's a cheap heal.
Also I just figured out that using the recovery spots costs less macca if I pre-heal everyone with Pixie first.
Boy do I have news for you.
It's like they never even bothered to play the game!
Pixie is not your waifu. Pixie is not a Pokemon. She, like other demons, are worthless monsters you bribed, threatened, and cajoled into doing your bidding. They are expendable pawns to be used up and thrown away the minute that their usefulness begins to wane. This is the most basic rule of SMT games- keep your demons up to date or you'll never get anywhere.
>All of humanity secretly wishes for death, birthing an avatar of death to end their lives in doing so
>All of humanity secretly wishes for convenient lies to cover up the harsh truths, summoning forth a fog of deception that will eventually turn them into shadows
>Humanity fucks up the world so bad that the world tries to smother them with demons multiple times
>Play another SMT game
>Have to negotiate with demons
idk man, she hasn't tried to kill me yet.
Why do you think the males tend to ask to be fused with a "hot chick" or a "cute girl" then?
It's really vague. Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon had old man demons saying, "Hey, fuse me with a hot young filly, will ya?" and then leave you a tear-stained goodbye letter.
Not him, but to demons, power is everything. Without power, they're worth less than nothing.
When fused, even if their personality ceases to exist, their power is inherited by the next generation, so the only part of themselves worth anything at all lives on, in a sense.
Unless their skills have eventually been replaced by newer, better skills, in which case yeah they're dead.
this nigga supposedly died after being fused and still you heard him spilling tears at the end
They don't die man, they fuse. What happens when you slam two people together? They die, but demons aren't people. Wanna fuse a demon with a person? That's a ok. A demon and a dog? The dog is still a dog, right? It's ust also half demon. Don't ask, it just works.
That's why you always fuse your pixie with a cutie. You didn't fuse your pixie with a nasty ass preta, did you? You sick fuck.
Don't think about it to much ok. It makes sense if you don't think about it.
>Demons in SMT can't even fuck
>Heat was the bad guy
Did you even fucking play the game?
Because 3DS is where a series goes to die.
the endgame maybe , but it wasn´t as bad as everybody makes it sound, the tayama stuff and the white were great
How could they fuck up DDS 2 so hard?
The first one had a really fucking nice atmosphere, gameplay, story and music.
The second one ruined all that. Specially the story, which was retarded since the plot twist at the beginning and went full retard as the game went on, specially in the last 2 dungeons.
who /SONOFMAN/ here
Don't you talk shit about my favorite game in the series.
But you're entitled to your opinion and I need to go to bed anyway.
Seems to me like it's where a series goes to thrive. How long had it been since we'd had a Yoshi game? And now we're getting Woolly World? Monster Hunter is selling like hotcakes on that thing to boot.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
FUCK you're actually right
You can probably blame Tadashi for that, since he's the one who took over when the original writer couldn't.
I've also heard that DDS was supposed to be a trilogy but that they decided to compress it into two games when the first didn't sell well, which is why 2's pacing is weird, but I can't remember what the source on that was.
>finish PS2 smt games
>try Soul Hackers
>god awful piece of shit
>oh my god
>jesus christ save me
>Devil Summoner 1
>why am I still trying
>dem graphics and dadrock ost
>edgy kill god bullshit
>has nothing to do with movie If... and same outdated shit as the two above
Fuck that, nothing worth it besides Nocturne, P3 and P4.
>pretending to like outdated shit
>soundtrack is so 90s
>plot is really shallow just like the characters
>graphics are the same shit as it was released for the saturn
Yeah nah fuck off faggots
I know it's a trickster, but
>calling anything edgy after liking Persona "shadows eat people coffins teenagers shooting themsleves in the face my parents hate me my teacher gf cuckolded me I am emo jesus" 3
>implying first person is bad
>implying 90s music is bad
>implying sprites are bad
>calling the Soul Hackers plot shallow while liking Persona 3 and 4
>complaining about the graphics when you like two games that reused assets from Nocturne
Don't you have a Persona thread you can tab to, holy shit
>it's new so it's good!
>>pretending to like outdated shit
>can't enjoy old games despite flaws
>soundtrack is so 90s
>this is a complaint
As it was and as it should be.
I have no strong feelings about this either way.
>>plot is really shallow just like the characters
>having a simple plot is bad
>not liking Film Noire characters
>not liking the best character in an SMT game
>graphics are the same shit as it was released for the saturn
It's a port, not a remake.
>hating on SH's glorious soundtrack
Yeah, that sounds like an incurable case of shit taste to me.
>complaining about first person dungeon crawling in fucking Megaten
Get the fuck out.
THIS SHOULD BE
i don't know what he says
Oh most definitely. It'll re-use characters too. I hope you're ready for more P4.
No, it isn't.
Regardless of the quality of those games, what I was saying is that there is nothing to suggest that they are dead, nor is there really a reason to suggest that the system was the cause.
>tfw want to get into SMT but can't stand first person dungeon crawling
Also Fire Emblem and Etrian Odyssey. 3DS has a tendency to ruin every franchise it touches for some reason. The system is like calcified disappointment.
LBW, Kirby, and Shantae broke the 3DS curse and were amazing though. And I'm hyped as fuck for the new Ace Attorney game because Layton vs Wright was great even if AA5 was way too handholdy.
And really Luigi's Mansion 2 was a great game, it just shouldn't have been so mission-based and railroaded.
It's my favorite Megaten game because I'm a sucker for the tech noir thing that the Devil Summoner subseries has going on, and it's a really good bridge between classic Megaten and current Megaten. The great thing about the 3DS port is that battles and dungeon movement are lightning fast, and that is something that should be true of more Megaten games.
It all depends on how you feel about magnetite, the loyalty system, and so on, though. A lot of people can't stand the micromanagement aspect of SH.
>all this niggas making crazy theories about Dia/Media skills.
It's literally "Aid" spelled in reverse.
So how exactly did the bodies of the people Adachi killed end up back in the real world after he tossed them in the TV and how it not wide spread knowledge that touching your TV at the stroke of midnight will cause you to have access to the Shadow world?
>It's literally "Aid" spelled in reverse.
>So how exactly did the bodies of the people Adachi killed end up back in the real world after he tossed them in the TV
>how it not wide spread knowledge that touching your TV at the stroke of midnight will cause you to have access to the Shadow world?
Nobody besides Seta, Adachi, and Namatame were stupid enough to touch the screen.
Which Kyouji? The MC, or the grump who likes to threaten to send people to hell for the smallest things?
The answer to both is no.
There was a cut bad ending to Devil Summoner where the protagonist successfully returned to his body, but he was bedridden and hospitalized for life.
Like all modern Zelda games there were some minor gripes to be had, but it was FAR from awful.
Monster Hunter, which I mentioned earlier in the thread, has only gotten better on the system, albeit maybe not graphically.
How do you even
Okay, what were your personal gripes with it?
Fuck me sideways I never noticed that. It was so obvious.
>mfw didn't buy Nocturne during the PSN sale for Raidou 2 and Persona 2
Either way I'm having a blast with Raidou
The detective one from Devil Summoner.
And that's pretty trippy, but it makes sense, given that he was fucking murdered.
So what the fuck happened to Kyouji then? Is he gone or is he hanging around giving the MC of DS1 advice?
I hate single target buffs UNLESS you're purposely buffing someone for an explicit purpose. If I have someone with a mind charge set up then I don't mind having raku on the ready
I got some use out of Rakukaja and Tarukaja early on in P3P's hard mode. Rakukaja to make sure MC survives a round in underleveled boss fights, Tarukaja on Mitsuru as she was Mind Charge nuking.
i've never been lit on fire but i don't suppose i'd be yelling AHH GAYYYYYY
I assume that you havent played SH. He stole the body of a guy who was working at a play.
MC is using Kyouji's body while kyouji keeps hoping.
>bald guy from DS1
>Sukeroku in SH
>Todoroki in P2
Philemon is a crazy person is why. He's worse than Nyarly.
Thalso in the first four games everyone just had Personas, didn't they? It was only in P4 where they had to face their shadows.
He's still around. If I'm not misremembering,
that whole deal with the bodyswapping shit was orchestrated by Charon and Kyouji. He intended to force the protagonist out of his body when the time was right (even though this would kill the protag for good - Kyouji is a callous motherfucker when it comes to his job), but it didn't work out. His soul had been away from his body for so long that there was no longer any link between the two.
Now he jumps from corpse to corpse. He's in SH as Sukeroku, which is why he makes that weird comment about wanting Finnegan's body. He acts as sort of a guide for inexperienced summoners, which you'll see if you try out SH's ex dungeon. Refuses to cross the River Styx, even though it pisses Charon off.
In Persona 3+4, buffs and debuffs don't stack and also wear off after 3 turns. In P3 you can't even refresh them until they wear off entirely.
Juggling the buffs and debuffs was actually pretty fun on hard mode and much more engaging than Nocturne's style of buff up as much as possible as soon as possible and then win unless the enemy can dispell buffs.
Quick question. I fucked up and doomguy is going chaos. Should I pick law options to get it back to neutral quicker or just pick neutral options?
inb4 muh fedoracore neutralfags
>MegaTen fanbase the music
Don't kill me for not posting War version
>What is it with the third game in a series atlus makes that attracts these kinds of superiority complex nuts.
Nigga, I've been playing EO since the first game came out, EO4 is not very good.
He does, yep, and if you check your party, you'll see that he's Chaos-aligned.
According to SH, Rei Reiho is Law, which explains a lot about their relationship.
>That area in
The Sunwhere you can't transform
That was enough for me.
>le EOU is bad meme
It's the same game. There is an added story mode for faggots. You don't have to play it. There is absolutely nothing making you play the story mode.
PQ is a Persona spinoff, and the classic mode in EOU is great. EOIV was slightly less amazing than it's predecessors; all these things do not equate to the absolute death of the series.
>tfw no Mari end
She and Shoji were the best characters
>missing the most obvious one in Strange Journey
Rei Reiho is Kaneko's waifu, so not unless Kaneko self-inserts as Kyouji.
Three-floor dungeons. The fifth stratum only has one floor. Dungeon layout even blander than EO1 (about on the same level as Untold's redesigned floors).
The only actually good stratum is the fourth one because there are FOEs that persistently stalk you once you trigger alarms, and that was kind of fun.
If your psp isn't 1000 model then I think Persona 2 will run bredy good. Then you have the untranslated psx ports of SMT I+II+If... and PSP Debisama all of those have scripts lying around so you are that hungry go for it.
About 50 hours into Nocturne, I suddenly realized that I didn't care about anything that was happening or anybody involved and stopped playing. The design and dungeons were really cool but that alone couldn't carry the game for me once the gameplay got easy and repetitive.
How does Strange Journey compare?
>About 50 hours into Nocturne, I suddenly realized that I didn't care about anything that was happening or anybody involved and stopped playing.
>I can't into blank slate protags and need to be spoonfed story and personalities
Boo fucking hoo
Strange Journey has a way better story.
Nocturne is kind of infamous for having boring as shit characters. I like Hikawa though, he's like a Pokemon villain.
or you could have actually read the manual, which said what every spell does and a translation of it was in the readme of Aeon Genesis's translation patch.
If you did you'd know humans are Light aligned, which is why thay are mostly immune to Hama.
No, the fairy thing opens up the fairy settlement sidequest.
Read through the FAQs section, there's one about how to force your way back onto the right alignment if you fucked up. But if you're early on you should be fine, just pick Law-sounding options when you're about to fight a boss and you'll balance back to Neutral.
If you seriously pick a Reason ending and it's not Hikawa's I don't know what you're doing, he's the coolest Lawfag villain in the franchise.
so i can just talk to the goblin over and over again and it'll slowly shift my alignment? breddy good, thanks m80
>mfw I finally reached not-Kyouji in SH's ex dungeon and then died from a Hama attack on the very first turn because I forgot that I had armor that negated my Hama immunity
IV doesn't have a cheat like that though which frustrates a lot of people.
SMT1 has all kinds of ways to shift your alignment. Even killing a significant number of Law or Chaos demons will shift your alignment to the other side.
