LET´S PLAY DWARF FORTRESS
We´re in the world of Usnuspbuzong, an old world created 1150 years ago. All races have grown and expanded all over the land, and destroyed most of the mythical creatures of the world. Vampires, and most other monsters that have tormented the sentient races, are now a nightmare of the past.
But not all are dead. 11 dragons were created with the world, and ever since they´ve destroyed cities and killed any hero who dared face them. Two of them were slain long ago, while young. The other nine have lived, and they became full fledged adults more than a century ago.
On this world there are also two bastions of evil. Two dark fortresses filled with goblins, their monstrous allies and some men, dwarves and elves of bad heart. These fortresses hold some prisoners, and are led by a demon each. The last two major demons on the world.
Defeating the dragons will take a strong warrior, a band of armed men, and a lot of balls.
Defeating the demons will take whole armies, which we won´t raise as an adventurer. We´ll need a stealthy hero able to sneak past thousands of goblins and trolls, yet still strong enough to face a demon.
These are our challenges in this world (locations marked with little red squares next to names):
1-defeating the dragons
2-defeating the demons
3-saving the prisoners in the dark fortresses
Files for the legends viewer, for cartographers:
It´s been long, very long since the last threads, but there´s more to come. Not many marathons, thought.
Some of the biggest updates are the climbing ability (handy as fuck), jumping (also handy as fuck, specially combined with climbing), advanced stealth mechanics taking smell, sound and cones of vision into account, and a completely revamped combat system that allows to recreate a Jackie Chan movie. Party controls are also improved and you can handle companion´s inventory and give some orders.
On top of that and as the biggest thing: THE WORLD IS NOW ALIVE. Everything happens and keeps happening during play: wars begin and end, armies roam the land, camp and attack cities, people rebel against enemy occupation, kings hold councils to decide the destiny of kingdoms, etc.
Crossbows have also been nerfed, so an untrained kobold with one won´t look like a machine gun anymore, and wood/bone tip armor is way less effective against armor.
In this world in particular, there´s no vampires. No werewolves either. That means that the only way to become stronger than normal or achieve immortality is to become a necromancer.
I seriously do not know how to play this game for the life of me, but I really want to because a lot of my friends do but they're assholes and will not teach me how. Does anyone have a beginners guide or something?
It's really nice to see you, OP. I was in almost every thread when you did this last.
Had an adventure save where a dragon was the only notable thing in the world. Accidentally stumbled upon it 20 minutes in, and killed it by hurling a dagger at it's face. Then a goblin killed me with an arrow not two minutes later.
Youtube and the Wiki are your best friends.
This taught me how to play. It's not as hard as people make out, it's just got a lot to it.
Next step, skills. We´ll need:
-stealth, because no way we´re fighting our way through 10.000 goblins
-one weapon skill (two if ranged - we need a close up weapon)
There´s two quickstart guides, the one for fortress mode and the one for adventure (what we´ll play here). Check out the thread in /vg/ too, it´s a very friendly community as long as you bother to check the wiki before asking something
Pleasure to read of old adventurers. Those threads were pretty fun, I still have all the images saved.
How old was that dragon? Young dragons are easy game. But here they´re adults
Yeah, the book is just the wiki put in order
Not sure. Haven´t played fortress in some time, it´s so time consuming.
Most other applications are updated, though, so most likely
Dragons take 1.000 years to become adults. Still, they´re mostly crystal cannons
I´m not sure a hammer is the best weapon for stealthing around. It takes awfully long to kill somebody, and we need quick action if we´re gonna sneak through so fucking many enemies.
I´d recommend something cutting for quick beheading or spears to fuck up organs, but let´s see how it goes.
About other skills: do we go full stealth tank, or sacrifice points in combat in exchange of being able to climb properly and jump far away?
Thanks Anons, I appreciate it. Have an image.
Next character will be full martial arts.
For now we going in hammerdorf.
Here is the character, with some min maxing because this gonna be hard.
Next one, next one. It´s my first run in some time and I´ve never gone too weaponless. Let´s do a test run. Next we can try to go fight a dragon in full Fist of the North Star mode
No they aren´t. And if they are, they can be wielded with hammer no problem
Hell, you can even wield a spear, a shield and a crutch in the same hand
With the power of the bismuth waifu, we will clobber evil.
Also, we´re a manly female dorf. I always forget the icon shows what you change to when pressing the button, not what you currently are
What do we do? Should we try some mission first and hunt down some food, as a warm up, or head up straight to the goblin fort?
Our location is the X. The fortress is somewhere in the circle. Pretty close up.
If anybody knows how to use the legend viewer, feel free to get the files from first post and take a look around. It´s always nice to have somebody finding the interesting shit around as we go
I vote we should move closer to the tower near the beginning of day 2, but the moment we see anything EVIL we run like fuck.
Day 1 we should be procuring additional foodstuffs and/or better equipment.
I left mine on from a /tg/ thread.
Sure, why not though?
I've never really had a problem with namefags. Anonymous is nice and all but sometimes I'd like to keep track of a conversation.
OK, turn of events. We appeared in a fort, and they´re fucking mazes, so I tried to quick travel outside. I accidentally found a deep underground road leading somewhere from the fortress.
Should we follow it, or try to reach the surface? and go on with our plan?
We follow the underground road.
It´s a pretty boring road, just a straight path (with a lot of turns) dug straight through the rock, sometimes passing through an underground lake.
After some walking, we arrive at another dwarven fort.
I think that´s all we´re going to find if we keep going. Try to find exist from this one up?
I just picked Ironhand in the LNP, but thanks
Welcome back OP.
Yeah go to the surface.
>I just picked Ironhand in the LNP, but thanks
I actually didn't notice you used Ironhand, I thought you were using the one from the OP map screenshot (looks like default). I take my previous statement back in that case.
Not that I care though, keep going.
Even if they do, we don´t have anything to pay with.
There may be a big ass expansive underground cavern connected to the road somewhere, but for now it seems to be artificial connections between underground forts
Yep. The surface is our best bet. Let´s see if we can exit
It seems the fortress is built inside this cavern. Or maybe further down the road.
Should we venture into the cavern?
We also seem to have travelled quite a lot. ÇWe´re already close to goblin land
Those dogs are tamed. We advance a little more, as there seems to be some noise, and OH FUCK
CAVE TROGLODITES ARE ATTACKING OUR BRETHREN ANIMALS
WHAT DO WE DO?
Looks like, but actually it hurts autistic people. Too chaotic.
You just need a little patience with the controls and getting used to the graphics.
Dude no, we need to stay the fuck away from this place.
It's only a matter of time before Skullfucker the Forgotton beast flies up from some unexplored area of the caverns and rapes our face.
That´s a lot of troglodytes
It means we have more chances to hit somebody each time we wave our hammer
All these animals are tamed. The owners must be somewhere.
Also, the only way to go is either another half a day trip through the cavern to the starting location, or straight through where the troglodytes are. Unless we want to try our luck in the cavern.
Vote now. Fight, go back, cavern.
See the thingy in the up left corner? That´s a compass. The symbols mean different things, the color of the letter shows distance. Green letter, close. We´re close to an underground dwarven fort to the North, so it looks like we have to go into the cavern (or down the road, which probably turns North again very soon)
>toady will never release source code
>people will never get to implement proper user-friendly UI and mouse support
I mean I managed somehow, but only after countless hours on wikipedia, while getting spoiled half of the cool shit.
The other ones weren´t even hostile, they were just chilling in their cave. We leave them there and go to the ramp a little to the north, carved into the rock.
After a lot of going up, we show up here.
I´ll walk you through the next so newbies get a sample
We are aboveground!
They´re friendly. That´s a market. They´re only selling wood pieces and telling stories of monsters and shit, though. Nothing useful.
One of them talked about a human vampire. Legends viewer didn´t show any, so many it´s a new one
I don't know exactly how the combat system works now but when I last played you select an equipped item, hammer, shield, crutch, handbag, that sort of thing. Then you pick a creature to target, and you get a list of available targets on that creature, head, upper body, right hand, left eye, back molar, ect. You're told how accurate your hit will be and how much damage it will deal. So if you get a tricky strong shot to the head it's likely to miss but will probably kill if it hits while a very accurate grazing shot to the leg is almost guaranteed to hit but won't deal much damage. As the fight goes on the the fighters get more damaged their defenses lower and more damage can be dealt, for example if you break someones shield arm they'll be unable to block ranged attacks anymore or if you break a leg they'll fall over and be unable to dodge melee attacks.
I watched this series
It's retard-proof, everything gets explained in detail, and after about 4 hours i was able to build a little self-sustainable fort
FUCK YEAH DWARF FORTRESS LP
hope i didn't miss much
Were the fuck even are we now
Also, night´s falling. I think we should sleep with the merchants, otherwise we risk getting eaten by night monsters
Somebody checking the legends? We need to know where the hell we are
We always go vampire. It´s losing the fun
Found our current location. We barely moved.
We´re the blue circle
We´re heading to the East, to infiltrate the goblin fort and try to kill the demon who leads it.
Right now we have an urgent problem, though.
Our water is frozen. And we have nothing to make a fire and light it up.
The river is also frozen, so we can´t drink from there either.
I tried to take down some wild animal to drink the blood, but they´re too fast.
What do we do?
We´ve crossed the dessert, and arrived a road. There seem to be settlements farther East
We keep going East and arrive to a little hamlet.
I believe we´ll be able to arrive to the dark fort tomorrow, if we leave at dawn.
We´re out of water and almost out of meat, too. Should we keep going and hope for the best, or stay around and spend the rest of the day refueling?
>We´ve crossed the dessert
Also, yes, visit the settlement and see if you can get a quest for something nearby.
>Forgetting everything and starting from scratch again
Now I remember why I stopped playing this game
Nothing. There´s fucking nothing to be hunt on this damn wasteland, and the rivers refuse to unfreeze.
We couldn´t find any supplies, and the townsfolk don´t seem to have ay to give either.
Continue East, or keep trying?
None of them are fighting, but the leader isn´t here. It´s just a little hamlet
Going East was our salvation.
There´s also bunnies around, but we´re not stealthy enough to get in hammer range
Now we have a little problem: We can´t swim.
But thanks to the new jump mechanic, we spring a little and keep on our way
We´re not very experienced in that either
Damn, this has gotten slow.
We finally found something. An alligator turtle will provide us food to keep going, and we refill our waterskin in the river.
We keep going East. The goblins are just there
But another problem comes up.
There´s nobody else here. We´re in goblin land now.
And we´re sleepy.
But if we sleep alone, there´s a huge chance we´ll be attacked by boogeymen.
Do we keep looking for a cave (which might be inhabited by something nasty), or sleep here?
We´re very close to our destination, but the closer we go, the bigger the chance goblins ambush us while sleeping
We easily climb to the lower branches and find a nice spot. Let´s cross our fingers
We a high quality ultraterrain dorf
After 6 pages of getting mauled, he gored us in the head with the horns, broke the skull and pierced the brain.
We said a full Jackie Chan dorf to kill dragons, right?
Some weird insectoid creature that appears at night and attacks lone travelers who sleep in the wild. They´re small and not that dangerous, but they attack in big numbers, and one of each few is actually strong enough to break you some bone.
Only way to avoid is traveling with somebody or sleeping in some place (a house, a cave, whatever). Sleeping at the beach is also safe
JACKIE CHAN DORF INCOMING
>There will never be an MMO or large party Game where you and fellow dwarfbros can chill in the cavernous halls of your own making
I need a couple minutes. Meanwhile, everybody check out the map on top and decide which dragon we want to go for
Climbing is a skill. Low skill results in falling after going up just a little, so going up high enough is safe against poor climbers.
Only one boogeyman attacked, after all. Don´t they always spam three at the same time, minimum?
the guy who functionally played Fallout new vegas with 10 people from /vg/was hammering the fuck out of dworf a few weeks ago in an attempt to niggerrig a multiplayer functionality in.
Fucking hilariously bad when it comes to fun aspects though, especially considering everything has a turn-based style movement/attack combat and a lot of attacks/moves take a differing amount of "steps".
I mean, human, elf, dorf? Only punches and kicks or also wrestling? Some weapon in case punches and kicks aren´t enough to kill a dragon (I think wrestling is, but not sure about the other two)?
Martial arts masters are fun as hell to play as. You don't even need a weapon. Just a shield to prevent headshots and breath weapon hits.
There wasn't much information on how he did it, but people who wouldn't have finished their steps would be frozen from any further action until their steps had finished, so as soon as someone made a move that did enough to finish their stepcount, they were able to move again.
the game stopped functioning once 4 people tried to strangle eachother in a circle on the same steps
We just need one guy for that, and we can get one guy without much social skill. But if we want a big band, then we need a lot of social, or it´ll take forever until we do enough deeds to recruit a big party
And we got a sidekick.
We have a spear with us. Keep or drop?
We´ll keep the spear to sell, but not use it in combat.
We´re on the red X. The female dragon is on the circle, slightly out of the map. The way there is heavily populated, mainly by dwarves, but then there´s a sudden change and it´s goblin territory. The dragon lives right next to a goblin fort, so we gotta be careful
LET´S COMMENCE THE KICKENING
We arrive to a marketplace right as the night falls.
I estimate one more day of travel. Probably w´ll have to sleep again on the way so we don´t arrive as it falls again.
Are stepladders already in?
We have no stealth skill. Anyways, I was talking figuratively. There´s some land between the dragon and the goblins, they´re just very close
It´s getting added as part of the fruit picking arch, but I´m not sure we´ll find that anywhere. Not even sure it´s already in
No idea where to find one in adventure mode, but they exist.
We lost the companions at some point, when they decided hunting a wild animal would be more interesting than following us. Luckily, we were pretty close to some hillocks, and have found refuge right as the night begins to fall.
We´ll pass here the night, and in the morning keep going. We´re pretty much next to the dragon´s lair... might arrive before midday if we leave at sunrise
No water, no food, and we need training.
COW MOOSE KICKING TIME
It escaped and ran away, but bled out shortly after.
Let´s butcher it and have lunch
Doesn´t look like we can drink his blood. Well, we can, but does nothing. I´ve tried cooking the fat, but still we can only lick it, not drink
We gonna die of thirst soon if we don´t find water
Oh hey, melting and drinking snow still works. Just seems to be half as effective for whatever reason, so it takes two sips until you see it taking effect.
We´re saved. Now it´s just looking for the dragon
For future reference, plan your travels carefully.
Travel along rivers, and look beforehand if you can avoid crossing rivers.
Drink regularly, and refill your waterskin whenever you can, including snow (fill waterskin, interact with campfire). Even better, find a second waterskin and carry it with you.
Keep a few dozen units of food in your backpack, and if you fall below a certain threshold (which you've just decided on arbitrarily), you get out of quick travel and kill the next animal you find.
I´m getting tired of looking for the dragon lair. We need somebody who can handle the legends viewer and find more exactly where it is, I just can´t find it
Now again, there´s a goblin fort just there. Let´s go and kick some ass now, or keep looking for the dragon?
I do all of that, although crossing rivers is no problem for me. Specially since jumping
Alright, here we are.
Do we enter carefully, sneaking around? Climb the thing up and try to enter from the top? Or just walk through the door fists blazing?
He must really love doing it.
I wonder if the game will ever reach a stage where he could call it "finished" or if he'll just work on it until he dies and that will be the final version.
I think if he's approaching death he'll surely make it open source. At any rate threetoe might outlive him and continue it
Really honestly think there shouldn't actually be that much more to do in ten years or so, and he can indeed call it 'finished' at that point. Unless he goes really deep into the realm of dwarf AI, or in-game microbiology, or something
We carefully sneak in.
It´s empty. There´s a ladder going up and another going down. Which one?
We still have two companions. Let them follow? Tell them to wait? Tell them to leave?
Now this looks interesting.
The compass says that the fort is to the North, though. Let´s take a quick look and be on our way
This is one weird building.
I have no idea what it is. Looks like a tomb, but it´s oddly empty.
Let´s venture down, or head North for goblins?
It doesn´t even go down. Those are only up stairs. Which is nice, because then the space is limited.
It´s all empty corridors with some statue here and there. This is the first thing I find, a throne.
it's a massive fucking tower of slade
you're wandering around in satan's cock
it can only lead to bad places
And this seems to be the end
What could possibly go wrong?
Oh, that one ladder also could go down.
I arrived to this room. It has levers.
Most of the doors are locked. This one wasn´t.
It´s filled with high quality weapons.
Just so you know, slade towers are where the demon thrones are housed. Usually at the top, I think.
Place is empty.
There´s also no other goblin location to be found. I think this is it. It´s deserted.
Agreed. We´ve been walking for too long.
But we got a guaranteed fight just there. A necromancer tower, in the coast.
Night falls just as the tower starts to enter our vision.
We move to the beach, have some dinner and prepare to pass the night.
We have arrived to the necromancer tower.
We have no idea what´s inside. Most likely necromancers. And a shitload of undead that will bash us to dead no matter how Chan we Jackie.
What do we do (after eating and drinking)? Front door, or attempt to climb up the tower and test if there´s another entrance?
Oh fuck, one of the undead was at the door and has detected us.
Run in and fight? Get away and kill it alone? Attempt to climb out of reach?
Undead are dangerous as fuck. They don´t feel pain, don´t give a fuck about most injuries, and are pretty fucking strong
OH FUCK HE´S NOT COMING ALONE
CLIMB UP WHAT? TOWER OR TREE?
HOLD A DEFENSIVE LINE
ERECT A WALL
A WALL MADE OF YOUR FISTS
They´re fucking fast, too. Pretty much running speed.
We have to sprint in order to get out in time, then gracefully jump onto a nearby tree.
Zombies cannot jump
We didn´t jump gracefully enough and didn´t manage to grab onto the branches. We´ve fallen down to the ground, fortunately uninjured.
Now is it: climb up another tree to asses the situation, or engage emergency mode and circle the tower to climb its back in an all or nothing maneuver?
Oh fuck I think all those symbols are zombies
BACK OF THE TOWER HERE WE GO
We failed to grab anything.
Highly unlikely, given that the necromancers will keep raising the undead. You´d need a massive amount of crossbows in order to kill everything fast enough, and it´d be mostly for the slight chance of killing everything between one of the bolts and the necromancer.
Usually you become a vampire first, because undead don´t attack undead
Lessons of the day:
Climbing is great to pass over obstacles
Climbing is cool as fuck and can save your life
You need more than three points in climbing or you´ll be falling all the time
Climbing is slow as hell and not an adequate escape route when enemies are in close range
hey OP are you really good at world generation?
ive been trying for over a month to generate a good(preferably 3x3) fortress site that:
a) is on a terrifying biome
b) has the reanimation effect present (everything that dies reanimates as undead regardless of where it is)
c) has AMPLE amounts of resources (iron, steel, flux stone, farmable soil/clay, adamantine, etc.)
d) World contains plenty of dragons/titans/megeabeasts/semibeasts
e) World contains other flourishing civilizations that havent been annihilated (mostly so i can be sieged and trade)
f) World size should be small or medium (Pocket is too small, larger worlds take a long time to gen) with not a lot of water (the OP image has too much water for my tastes)
g) embark is in an area with dangerous creatures (i managed to gen a world with the above parameters but the only creatures i ever saw after 3 years were the animals that immigrants brought
all i want is a terrifying as fuck undead embark that still has resources to become a powerful fort, i'm more interested in heavy military management than resource management (hence why i'm not just doing a terrifying glacier)
i can't gen worlds for shit, and the bay 12 forums are full of arrogant people, someone help me please
You're probably just gonna have to retry a lot, other than the obvious things like setting world age to young and resources to very high. A terrifying jungle or savannah would probably work all right for you.
>Dragon's Dogma goes free2pay
>nothing gets done in Dwarf Fortress
What a shit day.
Yep. Would probably have saved the day.
Sorry, I have no idea how it works.
Yeah, it´s been quite meh today. Just a lot of running around without really finding anything interesting.
I´ll fiddle around a little on my own, maybe mark the actual location of some interesting places, and keep it all neatly filed for next thread.
Which I don´t know when will be, but eventually.
I´ve had a lot of stuff to do. Still have, but I´ll be doing threads every now and then now. Check out the twitter in the first post, I always post in there about 20 minutes before I´m making a thread.
Sorry, but party´s over for today. I have to go now.
Maybe someone else wants to take the lead. There´s still a lot of stuff to explore and new features to try.
Hopefully I´ll open some other thread this same week.
Thanks for reading, and sorry for the lack of happenings!
>non graphic tilesets for playing with /v/
Taffer is my favorite set, but that´d leave out of the game everyone who doesn´t play DF and half the people who don´t play with ASCII sets.
And now I leave. Good nights everyone!
Good night OP, I'm glad you are back.
