>>283450571 My local walmart has only carried teh first wave, and its the only store that sells things like that, so I haven't gotten any besides kirby, luigi I wouldn't mind owning more, but I'm moving to Japan in a few months and don't have room.
>>283450571 Eh. I got Toon Link for HW and since I like the character. I might get one more at some point, but I kind of doubt it. I have nothing against them, though, and I'm glad Nintendo are making money, as I enjoy their games.
this was my thought process since day one. If you want an amiibo of, for example, Ness or Sheik or Duck Hunt then whatever. But a lot of the characters have proper quality figures these days. If you're gonna go full autism in collecting them buy figmas or something.
I've got six. Only really cared about getting Shulk at first, but I've started collecting sorta. I found a Sheik earlier while out looking for Majora's Mask 3D and a Mega Man, and just ended up picking it up on a whim since I didn't want the trip to be a complete bust. I've already basically given up on finding most of the ones I actually want because of scalpers.
If you find me a place where I can order an amiibo from europe or japan and have it shipped to the US I'll buy it from there. I don't care if it's comparable in price or higher to scalper scum since at least I wouldn't be feeding their garbage.
I feel like console shilling has gotten out of hand recently and amiibos managed to slip by. Most game stores have a Skylanders/Disney section now and Nintendo just want a piece of the pie. If you were into collecting I'd assume you'd go for better quality items and if you were into it due to the gameplay unlocks I'm not sure why you wouldn't be angry about amiibos
Mostly indifferent. I own three, and I bought them because I really liked the characters. Never had any intention of collecting all of them.
The only strong opinion I'll ever have of them is if Nintendo ever goes completely overboard locking away meaningful content behind them. Like the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors. The weapon itself is pretty meh, but it's a step in the direction I don't want to see them go.
>>283453957 No idea what stores would ship to the US. Never had the need to find out. I just find it weird Nintendo doesn't produce more, to fill the demand. They're far too conservative in their estimates.
Scalpers are the most honest of salesmen and the only set I have zero problems with. Your average scalper is going to give someone exactly what they want, they aren't going to pretty it up, tell half truths, force you to sign up for a mailing list, or any of that horseshit. They are just going to sell the fucking thing, if people are dumb enough to pay the insane markup. Well good for them.
>>283454265 >If you were into collecting I'd assume you'd go for better quality items Because this is the only merchandise half of these characters are fucking getting. People keep pointing this out and it keeps getting ignored, but I sure as fuck don't see any high quality Monado replicas or a Shulk Figma. Captain Falcon? Fucking nothing. Robin? Not a goddamn thing. Little Mac? Zilch. Ness? hope you like paying out the ass for outdated, long out of production gachapon figures that no one who has them will part with.
There is no alternative or better quality item in most of these cases.
>>283454436 >Like the Spinner in Hyrule Warriors. I honestly don't mind the Spinner. It's one weapon that offers an alternative playstyle for one character, in a game with around 10 characters and like 15-20 weapons. Any of the DLCs add so much more in comparison, that one weapon barely makes a different. I would have a problem if it added more, or if the base game came with less. But as it is, HW is so packed with content I don't even miss the Spinner.
>>283455379 I don't get it either. If I miss a character, that's what trade fodder is for, but usually, I just preorder the ones I care for anyways and live without whatever character I miss. Most I've paid for an amiibo, excluding tax and shipping shit is 13.99.
I think its neat that there's so many, but that's all the praise I have.
The ones my friends own look like cheap toys, they're rather expensive and adding DLC to them is incredibly stupid considering they won't be available all the time.
I also haven't been keeping up with any news regarding them. If you can buy the DLC they give in the games without having to have the amiibo, it sounds great for collectors and characters that don't get much (or any) actual figurines, since it is still an official product.
>>283456162 Because those dont exist for the few characters I actually give a shit about
Shit like Olimar and Duck Hunt will never get a quality figure. They're B-tier characters at best and don't have the advantage of being waifu material. A shitty plastic amiibo is the best quality they're gonna get
>>283456162 I've picked up a couple of them, got one as a gift and I don't think they look bad. Toon Link and Luigi both look great, and at least the ones I have have perfect paint jobs unlike some of the photos we saw before they released the first ones.
>>283456162 >Why not buy a high-quality, nice looking figure Because sometimes characters people like don't get those things and this is a nice alternative. Sometimes people don't want to pay $40 for big high quality figures of the character they like, and just want a little trinket for their desk.
It's been explained like twenty goddamn times in this thread alone.
>>283455121 Well that makes sense. I assumed there were alternatives. Message received. Don't know why so many people on /v/ are tolerant of them though we rarely have any cross threads with /toy/ anyway
I'm not interested in buying them, but I don't have a problem with them in general. I think things like the Smash bros implementation are cool, or using them to unlock cosmetic stuff.
However I think there is potential for them to be used in extremely shitty ways. I dislike the idea of having actually gameplay content locked behind them, because then you're dealing with having to buy these toys that you might not even want to get the "complete" experience out of your game. They haven't done anything super egregious yet, but the locked weapon in Hyrule Warriors and the Fire Emblem characters in that S.T.E.A.M. game are kind of pushing it to me.
>>283451563 This. I used to get angry at nintendo but then it hit me. If there are fucking dipshits who will throw their money away on this garbage, why blame nintendo? Props to them for milking these fucking retards dry.
>>283456959 I wish I'd bought Wii Fit Trainer back when I had the chance. She's a fun, silly character to play as and it's always great to wreck someone's shit and then taunt them with >Let's stretch out legs afterward. But I passed her up because her leg was a little too bent. Nothing a minute or two with a hair dryer wouldn't have fixed but I didn't think about it at the time.
>>283457231 I had Little Mac in my fucking hands, but decided I'd check other stores for him (didn't like the look of that big ugly Gamestop sticker). Had no idea he would go out of stock so amazingly fast. Still kicking myself for that.
I got Wii Fit Trainer a good week-and-a-half after launch. Now with the newer waves they're gone in less than an hour.
>>283457230 For e-reader didnt you have to have 2 GBAs and a link cable to get locked content? One to have the e-reader in and one so your game gets the data also standalone figures > $20 peripheral + packs of cards that were like $10 each iirc
I like it just because it's a way for figures to get released for characters who would never get one otherwise, like C. Falcon or Duck Hunt. But other than that I don't really care, it's $15 for DLC across multiple games, compared to DLC shit from other companies like EA or Ubisoft it's not bad.
>>283457401 Where did you order him? GAME does not have the add to basket button on the listing, ShopTo says it isn't taking orders for it at the minute and no where else has it listed. The only wave 4 I could pre order so far is Charizard I NEED MY NESS GOD DAMMIT.
I got some amiibo only because I collect such shit. Got only the ones I liked/from games I liked. Like the Fire Emblem ones, Kirby amiibos and Zelda amiibos. Also Rosalina, no idea why, probably because its a rare amiibo. They are not bad quality wise and not all that expensive. Plus there are some we never had figures of so I'm happy with them. Sucks that Nintendo is having problems because they cant sell consoles (Wii U) but get back on their feet thanks to toys.
>>283450571 I picked up a Little Mac, Villager and Kirby. They alright. I really don't feel like I'd miss out anything if I didn't buy them though and I'm honestly not too fussed about missing out on some of them but Nintendo is pretty retarded for not being able to meet demand. If Skylanders can, why can't they? Would also help stop all the scalping nonsense
As I kid I would have LOVED to have some video game merch, but they just didn't have Bowser toys on the shelf. So I can understand why they are a thing now.
But, I can't really understand why a grown man would want to collect toys. And if figurines are your deal, then why the fuck are you buying dollar-store quality Mario mock ups instead of stuff that actually looks good?
Reminder these mcdonald toys are required to buy if you want to unlock content in games you buy from jewtendo, and jewtendo doesn't even make enough of them to sell to people who want them fuck this company so hard
>>283462160 different based on game you're playing ranging from unlocking costumes to game modes, to side content within games like toads treasure tracker where there will be hidden things in each level and you gotta find them
>>283462445 Supply and demand. If Nintendo shipped tons of these then demand would slowly dwindle eventually. People are eating this shit up solely because of the scalpers, Nintendo is smart, Nintendo is the savior of the world economy.
>>283457230 those e-cards actually had program data on them. You could argue that the tiny amount of data on an e-card could have easily been installed on the physical e-reader but then why have the peripheral at all?
On one hand it's cool that you can get figurines of your favorite characters that also can interact with your games.
On the other hand, this "interaction" is limited to unlocking on-disc DLC and simple features that might as well have worked fine without any additional accessories (amiibos in this case). Also most of them look completely awful.
So in the end, amiibos are pretty damn shit. It's a shame, since they COULD be something fun.
I thought they could've been pretty cool as a concept when they were first announced and Smash used them for something semi-unique (memory cards basically).
Then they announced the other games and how most of them just used amiibo as cosmetics unlockers, like Mario Kart 8. Stopped caring for them at that point.
Have a strong distaste for them now that they're actively hiding gameplay content in games that aren't even out yet behind them (see Codename STEAM).
Had they just been figures and not been tied to any content, I may have eventually bought a Palutena or Mr. Game and Watch if either of those happened simply because those two will likely get another type of figure and I really like them. But now I'm a bit put off by them.
If not "On-disc DLC", then what? What else would you have them do? If you want them to interact with the game, there's got to be some fucking code in the game for them to interact with. What is the alternative?
And if we're talking on-disc DLC, this is about the least offensive DLC I've ever seen. Literally, hats in MK8.
>>283464546 Kirby Rainbow Curse handles it well. That is, assuming you can get the powers the amiibo give you elsewhere in the game too. They offer you an in-game effect on demand, a small boost if you want it, but presumably you can get those same boosts elsewhere in the game.
As well as that, they could be used to hold things like time trials from Mario Kart 8 that you could take to your friends or something.
Neither of those two require them to lock content behind the amiibo, while still giving the amiibo a function.
>>283464907 Technically the amiibo doesn't do anything in Smash besides hold data and tell the system what character it should let you use for the AI training thing.
The Wii U/Smash is doing the work involved with the AI, and already knows how to let you train AI with any character. The amiibo isn't a necessary aspect to have trainable AI in Smash.
>>283465083 That analogy would imply that cutting out any form of non-completely necessary content and selling it separately isn't something to complain about and that ALL forms of DLC are fine because no game has ever required its DLC to function.
>>283463413 >unlocking on-disc DLC Both HW and MK8 patched the amiibo stuff in. The only game released with amiibo functionality at launch was Sm4sh. MP10 will be the first game where you could actually call it "on-disc", assuming it does indeed release with the amiibo boards.
>>283469823 eh, i actually like amiibo, they're okay little figures at 13 dollars. scalpers are also cool, they're making some easy money. however, fuck all the idiot sheep paying high prices and fuck nintendo for fucking up the supply enough for scalpers to thrive.
>>283470371 Nintendo made a short supply of some of them. Like, common amiibo like Mario and Pikachu are in good supply, but shit like Rosalina and Shulk are store-exclusive and next to impossible to find in stores.
>>283470371 Nintendo characters are popular, and most of them have never had any merchandise before like Marth or Captain Falcon. Nintendo made it worse by only really mass-producing their flagship characters like the Mario cast, Pikachu, and Link so those fuckers are all over the place. People want these lesser known characters and there aren't as many to go around, and no reprints on the horizon, so assholes are taking advantage of this and buying them up to sell at a massive mark-up. In some cases, like Shulk, the character isn't just niche, or low production numbers, but fucking retailer exclusive, making things even worse.
>>283471603 How does that not explain it? People like to own shit from the things they like, whether it's art or figures of characters they enjoy and now for the first time ever many of these characters are getting merchandise and the people who have wanted them for a long time now are desperate to finally get some.
He wants you to say that your mothers touched you and you like to mutilate small animals. Also wants to to admit to having some kind of mental illness because he can't wrap his head around the concept of people liking a thing.
>>283467868 >>283469727 what is HOO HAA? I'm assuming it has something to do with DK since the guys I was playing with were saying it when I was comboing shit, I tried googlin' it but nothing comes up and I was too scared to ask at the time because I didn't know what was going on.
>>283450571 I hate the very idea of content for upcoming releases being locked behind crappy figurines. It has all the failings of regular DLC, but now I also need to worry about managing to find the right amiibo for a game. From what I've seen on here half of the amiibos are constantly sold out, and I'd need to compete with scalpers and collectors and the like to get my mitts on one. Never been one to decorate my place with figurines either.
You dumb assholes are tripping over yourselves to get your hands on them, too, which ensures that they're not going away for a long while. Thanks guys.
I've pretty much gotten to the point where I'm on the "Jesus Fucking Christ's sake take it to >>>/toy/ already if you're not going to talk about the actual video game functions of these shitty poorly made cash grab figurines" side.
>>283472372 >>283472545 Why would that be associated with diddy when the theme song goes "HOO HA! Donkey Kong!"? i thought they were referencing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTGMS3jDxV0 smash4 babbies are autistic as shit.
I like them as a cohesive set of first party Nintendo character figurines. Gonna get a Megaman when he hits the shelves next week just to throw some money at Megaman stuff, and hope that it does so well Capcom works with Ninty for a MM revival on 3DS/WiiU or something.
>>283457680 Looking forward to the next Nintendo system at E3 2016, they'll have some good stuff with 2015's lineup, finish off with Zelda U, and then sell you a new machine. And folks will buy that shit up.
Their worth is based on a character-by-character basis, and within that a person-by-person basis. Each amiibo has different compatible games with varying amounts of content or features for said game. For every Mario/Link/Marth/etc. you have a Shulk/Little Mac/Mega Man/etc. It all depends on how much you value having a relatively cheap little official statue of said character. Xenoblade fans are probably not going to get any official figures other than the Shulk Amiibo, so even though he'll probably only be used in Smash and MAYBE XCX for a costume or something, the value of owning a Shulk figure is greater than, say Mario or Link, who have fucktons of merch as it stands. Personally, I might get a Ganondorf Amiibo, and I don't even have Hyrule Warriors. I just like the character and main him in Smash, plus I think his official render's pose will work well without needing dumb rods.
On a related note, I might just buy myself a Disney Infinity Venom statue and I have zero interest in playing that game. That Venom is just fucking awesome.
>>283457931 A craze started over them because of a few factors.
1. Manufacturing on certain characters with 'niche' appeal was less than demand
2. Interest soared after that one news story about a Fox amiibo nearly winning a Smash 4 tournament
3. Scarcity of certain rare figures created a hype storm over amiibos in general
There are now people who spend hours a day making sure that they are the first to know about new preorders and restockings for these things. It went from "here's a fun toy for your game" to "dear god I must have them all!" and for some figures that makes them very hard to get.
Then of course, the reports of ebay sales reaching high prices, bolstered by the reports about production error models selling for thousands of dollars, has fueled a strong scalping market. So you have collectors and scalpers fighting over an already scarce product, and the honest consumer is pretty boned by it all.
>>283481304 I took a look at the Ganondorf 10" figure, but I can't justify spending a hundred bucks on it. Can totally justify an amiibo, though. But fuck, having to wait for so long for Wave 5 to be announced will totally catch me off guard.
And for me it's that Donald Duck Infinity, it looks great.
>>283481304 This exactly. Rosalina for example only has a bad looking plushy, and the only other figurine of her is smaller, more fragile, and actually looks a little worse than the amiibo, making her worth more than Mario already (beyond the scalping and exclusive shit)
>>283482627 >Waiting for Fucking Gamestop to get my Ike in >Hoping for Target to restock so I can get a free Megaman >Need to Preorder Ness, Lucina x2, Robin, and GS Marios >Want G&W, ZSS, Greninja, Olimar, Da Kunt and Rob >Sorta Want Jigss, because I keep on forgetting about her
Just made a huge spreadsheet of all the amiibo I've bought, including ones I'll keep, ones I've sold, and ones I will sell when they come in In the end I should make minimum $30 profit and gain 11 amiibos for nothing besides selling shit on ebay
>>283450571 I don't buy 'em. As figures they're ugly, and as game interaction they're entirely superfluous. I'd like to know if the rumors of them being necessary to add characters to Mario Party 10 are true, because that would be legitimately disgusting. Besides that, they don't excite or offend me.
>don't really care that much about amiibos >just want the ones for my two favorite characters shulk and sonic >all these scalpers >tfw catching myself refreshing their pages on gamestop like every five seconds just in the vain hope they've restocked them
I want off this fucking ride.
also half considering getting a kirby but he, link and most mario characters are pretty much never going to be out of stock so I'm not exactly worried about that one.
Against. What dignity I have left will not be spent buying a toy made from Chinese plastic just so I can use a feature in a game that I've already payed for.
For some reason, Nintendo didn't learn their fucking lesson with the Gamecube and that GBA controller bollocks (at least this one isn't $99). Peripherals are a nuisance that people will always see as you demanding more money for them to access content in a game that they've already payed for.
>People buying a cheaply made toy at figma prices. >Not just buying an actual good quality figma at that point.
It's the principle of the matter Anon. People's willingness to buy from scalper scum instead of putting that money elsewhere is what separates desperate Nintoddlers from the patrician figure buying individual.
>>283456162 >Why not buy a high-quality, nice looking figure Because I like little collectable statues. I do not care for figuarts. I do not care for figmas. I do not care for RAH. I do not care for anything I can pose. I am not imaginative, I do not like spending ages putting a pose together. All I like are tiny statues that are cheap but still relatively nice looking, that don't take up much room, feel alright, and can do stuff for me in games now and for whatever amount of time to come. Not to mention I can get figures of ROB, Captain Falcon, Ness, Olimar, Mr. Game and Watch, and Duck Hunt.
