>>284230793 >>284232858 I was an Elder Scrolls virgin until I picked up Skyrim. I fell so hard in love that I picked up Oblivion. At first I thought Oblivion was butt ugly, but I've spent the last 6 months in fucking Oblivion, and its gotten to the point where I find myself actually admiring the graphics.
Its all about perspective. The graphics were great for the time.
I never played the game, don't know why. I decided to play it a few months ago, but they bug me, even though I would have been amazed 9 years ago. It's like that awkward point in graphical development.
Playing it with my brother for first time, we were thinking it would be shit. Came out of sewers mostly unimpressed and realised it was free roam and all looked this good and you could loot nearly everything. Then shivering Isles, I fucking loved the shivering Isles so much. Played it for 23 hour straight whilst visiting my brother once. Great days to be alive.
>>284234360 >Hammerfell That would have alot of visual potential. ALl the sand dunes being kissed by the sun and the wind, the intensity of the sun rays, the red rock formations jutting from the sand, the Redguard cities and markets and caravans....It has the potential to be the most visually intriguing and colorful game yet. Hopefully they don't get lazy and literally give us a fucking sand box.
>>284232823 Because who plays for the main quest anyway?
You break out of jail, leave the sewers, swim across the lake, take out the two bandits outside the Ayleid ruin and then you do whatever the fuck you want, as long as that doesn't involve going to Weynon Priory.
Oblivion was brilliant because it was clearly not about the main storyline, it was about the player. Skyrim is nowhere near as good for the opposite reason.
can you post some more webms of viewing buildings, trees, etc in the distance? I'm pretty sure my game is fucked up with LoD stuff but it's also possible that I am not remembering how this looks correctly.
We had a thread about this yesterday. Some fag was talking about how the redguards can create time vortexes or some bullshit with their swords, how they have airships and all this other cool-ass shit in Hammerfell. And also how none of it will be present in the actual game and we'll get generic plains and mountains filled with boring old bandits and wolves because Bethesda can't into imagination. Same shit with what happened to the living jungles of Cyrodiil, from what I heard.
Also, why is everyone so confident the next game will be in Hammerfell?
>>284235532 It took me 2 years to actually bother to complete the main story and i played the game for hours almost every day. I would spend ages just picking a point on the compus and walking until i find a ruin or cave and then go exploring.
It should be either Summerset Isles or Elswyer. We've had a million RPG's set in European and Nordic locations, but I can't think of anything that has a tropical south american and/or african style locations.
>>284235834 >why is everyone so confident the next game will be in Hammerfell We're not. There's nothing to go one, its all speculation. It could be Hammerfell, the Balck Marsh, Valenwood/Elsweyr, Summerset Isles, the part of Morrowind that's the size of fuckign Skyrim that we never went to in Morrowind..
They could even get original and take us to a new continent. Pic related.
Some anonymous fucker "reportedly" inside Bethesda gave an anonymous tip to an anonymous journalist that it will be the Black Marsh, released in 2016, sometime around March.
>>284235834 The cool sword shit has a lore excuse, back when they were on their own island chilling they had the Ansei making swords of pure martial prowess and basically being anime characters, then they had to nuke the place and come to the mainland. It's been dying out since then and now most can't do anything cool like that.
>>284236803 >I'm just going to spend the next 2 days modding it then not playing it I do that everytime i get nostalgic over the game. I wish modding didnt take so damn long that the nostalgia has worn off by the time i decide to play it.
>>284236837 Where were you when Skyrim was first confirmed?
I remember walking to class and I saw my friends all gathered around a cell phone, watching some video. >"ANON, ELDER SCROLLS 5 CONFIRMED, COME CHECK OUT THIS TEASER ITS SICK!!" >"What's Elder Scrolls?" >"Oblivion you fucking retard.." >"OBLIVION'S GETTING A SEQUEL1?!?!"
I remember seeing that fucking dragon and tripping balls
>>284236552 Is there any kind of canon map of Nirn? It just seems so weird that there are other non-island landmasses aside from Tamriel. TES games really do a shitty job of world-building despite all this awesome lore they have to work with.
>>284237712 What pisses me off is that vampire snake-samurai seems so goddamn inconsistent with what we've been fed all these years by the games themselves. It's like Bethesda is trying so hard to make TES as generic a fantasy world as they can. Swords, sorcery, dragons, elves, and demons (I'm sorry, "daedra") are always the focus. The moment something new and interesting eventually shows up (like said snake samurai) it will seem totally out of place and jarring, like the devs just made it up on the spot to be weird. Not that it would ever happen in the first place, though, because we all know Bethesda is afraid of creativity. Morrowind was the closest we got to something truly unique and non-generic.
>Atmosphere >Quests >Music >All that hidden shit to discover >Unique charm Despite its many flaws (not considering mods), Oblivion has to be one of my favourite games ever. Morrowind's good and all, but man, Oblivion! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YKicBAMlBk
>>284238449 >spell crafting was too OP so they removed it >you can still enchant your equipment so your attacks deal quadruple damage and cost zero mana >combat is still boring as fuck and requires zero strategy in the first place
>>284238808 Yeah, Oblivion has some golden quality/ies that I can't put my finger on.
Skyrim feels so lifeless and dreary, the quests are shit, the NPCs only ever say the same thing over and over, the magic is shit and you can't make it better... just the faults in Skyrim are far more egregious and damaging.
The main quest chain is vastly under rated. It's honestly well thought out and contains two of the best quests in the entire game (namely, infiltrating the mythic dawn, and invading Mankar's Paradise). Even the couple of dungeon diving quests had well designed dungeons. It even brings up some decent conversation about the lore!
I think people just shit on it because they didn't realize the quest to close an oblivion gate outside of every city was optional.
>>284230964 I'm struggling with this problem right now.
I have a backlog that I was trying to slog through, just finished trails in the sky. I just started the next one I wanted to get through but now I'm really trying to fight the urge to reinstall oblivion.
>>284239012 I know, it makes no sense whatsoever, because the game is more broken than ever with Enchanting/Alchemy exploits, and shit even just getting smithing to 100 and using a stock potion breaks combat completely.
But see anon, that breaks the game in a boring way, so it's cool. If you could create a spell like in Oblivion to make everyone in 50ft super brave and super furious, that would be a problem. But making a really strong sword that can kill the final boss in 8 hits? That's realism, so it's okay.
>>284232562 >>284239236 This quest was fucking great. The one consistently great thing about TES is the lack of boring fetch/objective quests. The mansion murder mystery was all dialogue and decisions - no combat, crafting, exploration, or any of that, and it was one of the most fun things to do in the game.
>Same shit with what happened to the living jungles of Cyrodiil
The nibenean valley is largely tropical. The reason they didn't make the country primarily jungle was a design choice, not laziness (although it's possible excessive vegetation could have bogged down the already limited processing power of 7th gen consoles and computers people were using in 2006). Perhaps they were worried that making things primarily jungles would have made it too similar to Morrowind's ecology?
>find out about enchanting >"Cool!" >enchant headpiece with huge fire damage bonus so that my fire spells will do more damage >put it on >I catch fire and die >wat >reverse pickpocket it to an NPC >he puts it on and dies
>>284239297 To be honest, I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia. Most of you played Oblivion when you were kids, and it was your first dose. I'm a newfriend to ES, so I played them back to back after I was already a grown man, and they were equally as fun to me.
The only notable differences I noticed were that Skyrim's main quest was 10000x better than Oblivion's. Also Skyrim's side quests had way too much cave shit. And I know Skyrim has less weapons available to make, or something along those lines, but it wasn't something I saw in practice because I'd never get to 100% completion unless I was in middle school again, on Summer break.
Overall, they were both 10/10 games for me, and I'm excited to see the 6th.
>>284239390 Fuck I actually love Oblivion. It's so sunny and bright and colourful, and it sounds... peaceful a lot of the time.
>>284239460 Guild quests were just far better. Main quest in Oblivion is probably still far better than the best Skyrim quest though. The Battle of Sancre Tor and the one outside Bruma were brilliant as well.
>>284240168 >DB quest to kill your branch >Plant poison apple on big orc >Sits down to eat >Sit next to him, look him in the eyes as he takes his first bite and seals his fate >Watch him slowly die
>DB quests to kill the members of the Black Hand >Rude ass Dunmer has a honey allergy >Drop mead into his inventory >Completely paralyses him >Slowly cut him up with a dagger as he lies there, helpless
Man, where the fuck were the quests like this in Skyrim? Hell, where were the mechanics in Skyrim?
>>284240242 If you played Oblivion when it was first out you would realise nobody liked the questline and the game was about the exploration, side quests and setting which was something Skyrim lacked completely. I went into Skyrim more excited than any other game i had ever played. After playing it for about 10 hours i decided to stop playing since it was such a shallow mess of a game.
>>284240527 Like I explained, I have a huge backlog I was happily beginning to clear.
The " fight it " part is entirely self-imposed, /v/ and its opinions have nothing to do with it at all.
The only reason it even matters is because a few games are coming out in rapid succession starting at the end of this month, so I was spending this time clearing older games I'd put on the back burner.
And then there's Oblivion, just like Deus Ex and Vampire the masquerade, any time I see a thread about it I get this urge to reinstall it and it takes precedence over any games I was trying to play.
So yeah, it wasn't because I was told to play a checklist, it's just that Oblivion likes to come in from time to time and just kick everything else I'm doing to the curb.
Oblivion's landscape is a bit generic and no mods can fix that without shitting up consistency or atmosphere (looking at ULComp). That's the only thing I'd give Skyrim over Oblivion, landscape and graphics.
>>284242714 I remember trying to make a Breton with a beard once as my 4 character. He had a black chin and mouth, damn did it look ugly, no wonder I just went and made my 3 khajiit after that 20h playthrough.
>>284244047 I bought a new setup "recently", and Oblivion runs at 60FPS with settings maxed, I thought I'd never see the day. The FPS still dies if there's more than like 3 people fighting. Just try going into Rockmilk level 2 without it turning into a slideshow. Thanks Gamebryo/Bethesda
>>284243985 >Arena Not really no. I beat it, but trudging into that game is a relic of relics. The hardest part of it thought is trying to get hit level 5. Once you get that via a combat or magic spec thought, you're golden for the rest of the game pretty much. Before then thought all of your stats are are piss poor, and you die in a few clean hits. Not only that, but the WILDLIFE, IN CITYS, DOING NIGHTIME, IF YOU AREN'T IN AN INN.
The amount of times I left the starting area, only to end up at night in a city, and then get slapped by a wolf is insane.
>Daggerfall The best. Just note magic in that game hurts. Period. A lot of deaths I had in that was because some imp behind a door got a spell off on me and nuked me for all of my health. Doen't matter your level, they can still do it while your 20 fighting wyverns. Yes, there was dragons in Daggerfall I don't know why everyone acted like Dragons where a new topic in skyrim.
>>284244640 I thought it was just too bland, dull and bleak.
It's not so much the terrains or biomes, but the fact that everything just looks so grey and bleak. There is just no colour in the game at all. It's really quite striking when you compare it to Oblivion and Shivering Isles.
>>284244903 >>284244336 Thanks, i'l play Daggerfall. Seems like i'm missing out on a lot. Come to think of it i'm sure Arena was the one i've played actually.
>>284244671 Damn i completely forgot about that quest. I didnt even discover it until after i played the game through a couple of times already. I think thats what made Oblivion so great; it always found a way to suprise you.
>>284244151 >cast a frenzy/rally spell on a crowd, starting a huge melee where the townspeople kill each other and try to punch guards, guards kill rioting villagers and each other >end result: 50% of the town's named NPC population dead, massive guard casualties + some asshole looting all the corpses >0 bounty
>buy some food at an inn >go sit at a table and touch a fork >psychic guard teleports in and wants me to go to jail because I just spent my last gold on the food, otherwise he'll kill me thanks uriel
>>284245493 >>cast a frenzy/rally spell on a crowd, starting a huge melee where the townspeople kill each other and try to punch guards, guards kill rioting villagers and each other >>end result: 50% of the town's named NPC population dead, massive guard casualties + some asshole looting all the corpses
Has there ever been a more fun thing to do in any video game ever? That's not even rhetorical, if there is I want to know so I can do it immediately.
>>284247386 >Kill someone as part of a quest >Your crimes have made you unfit to wield the Crusader's Relics. Walk the Pilgrim's Way to repent of your sins and once again seek the favor of the gods for fuck sakes man
>>284232823 >one quest >go into the painting >entire area has it's own textures to make it unique >guy is already kill >turpentine kills everything super easy >leave the way you came >quest over >never go back into another painting >get a fucking gay aprin as a reward >no mention of this type of magic for the rest of the game
Pissed me off. On a side note:
>skyrim takes place after this game by several hundred years >somehow feels less civilized than this game >elder scrolls online takes place 1000 years prior to skyrim >no actual technological advances or anything significant to show for it, everything is the same
>>284235410 ENBs in Oblivion always fucks up with SSAO and Detail Shadow and the OBGE has never fixed ENB issues for me, even with those settings turned off some enb's still have artifacts like transparent black shit through walls depending on the lighting. I use the d3d9 for SMAA, proper anisotropic filtering and fps cap but I disable the enb effects (shift + F12)
>>284235559 Well in the lore, only Argonians can really survive in 85% of Black Marsh, so that'd be pretty fucking stupid, but not like Bethesda hasn't raped their own lore after making Cyrodiil a temperate forest. Then again you could argue Talos and his CHIM shit, but that's getting pretty deep
I loved Oblivion because there were so many cool side quests, you could be walking and all of a sudden be swept away into something you actually were interested in. Skyrim didn't seem to have that at all. Were there ever any cool quests that like that in Skyrim?
I think my favorite from Oblivion was the who-dun-it quest for dark brotherhood, or when I ran into Hackdirt and started investigating around there.
>>284248501 there's no logic in the elder scrolls universe when it comes to technology, they use weapons that don't work (throwing knives), staple weapons that became staple weapons because of how effective they were (spears and later polearms), magic is not used in armies in game (it is in the lore, but you never see battlemage guards), the armor classes are completely arbitrary, the reason for ACs is to differentiate between a gambeson and mail, not for different types of what is essentially plate, there's no cavalry to speak of, no lances, no javelins, no slings, and then you've got dwemer with fucking robots
>>284237865 This is why i hate skyrim. There were too many flat surfaces that let you see exactly what was a mile that way. Atleast with oblivion you had a sense of wonder about whats over the next hill while in skyrim you could see all the terrain from the map and most interesting points can be seen from quite some distance away. There are so many things wrong with skyrim that makes me rage like an autist. Its disgusting that they did this and i wish years of pain upon them for it.
>>284228239 meh both oblivion and skyrim are pretty good. Especially skyrim if you separate it from being a TES game and just judge it on its own. In the end I of course am disappointed in the lack of a dynamic graphical environment due to its shit engine and the lack of proper rpg skills and mechanics, but I still had a lot of fun in both these games. Just like the total war cycle, im sure when the nest TES comes out you'll all hate it and then say 'hey skyrim wasnt so bad'
>>284248076 Magic litterally solves anything tech wise. However, there's already airships, spaceships, space stations, and other weird shit in Elder Scrolls. Just read a little bit of lore, Dwemer Airships are in Redguard, Bloodmoon, and Dragonborn. Battlespire takes place on a space station, and different space travel is mentioned in books, but pretty much never appear in game.
>>284249547 I controlled mine to limit myself to once a week, but a good amount It really helps because I find I get a lot of shit done prior to it because I'm looking forward to it Still not a solution but a step
I still feel like a pathetic anthony burch beta cuck the next day, i'm /fit/ too
>>284250303 >Didn't know about Lovecraft at the time of playing Oblivion >Constantly waiting for the Deep Ones to show up >Get hyped that maybe they'll even show up while I'm doing an unrelated quest and take revenge >They never do
>>284251480 why did they make magic so shitty when it was the only thing that looks good?
i can't stand melee combat in elder scrolls games, there are much better games that emulate melee combat and archery infinitely better than the elder scrolls series ever have, i'm going to play a mage because that's the only thing that isn't shit
>>284249230 Ending an addiction is a process that has an EXTREMELY high failure rate unless said addict gets professional help...and even. There is a wide and varied reason for this, but saying 'just quit it' largely doesnt work except in exceptional cases. Shit it may even 'work' for a year or two, but there is a heavy genetic and psychological reasons for addiction and overcoming that requires a process that has been honed for decades.
I just wish there was a simple download with mods so I didn't have to go searching the nexus and downloads a hundred mods and install them all in the correct order and look out for incompatibilities etc.
>>284251686 Somewhat, but there isn't much to work with really. It's very hard to make spells analogous to the command humanoid and creature spells of Morrowind and Oblivion.
>>284251748 Not really, people have tried but it's not true spellmaking.
>>284251834 You answered your own question anon, it looks good and that's why it's shitty. Everything in Skyrim is style over substance. I just hope they improve things for the next game. A long-shot, but I'd settle for improved magic alone.
>>284252618 Wrong, it's willpower, and saying otherwise is just an excuse not to do it because it's easier. I quit smoking, drinking, and caffeine at the same time cold turkey just because I decided not to do it anymore so I could get healthy. It's as simple as just stopping, and to allow something to have this kind of control over your life is weakness on your part.
>>284252704 there WERE 2 such packs for morrowind and im pretty sure i remember one for oblivion. The problem is the packs take a bunch of work to put together, you have to get permission from the original creators (which is why i wrote WERE) and the packs are easily out dated.
>>284248076 Oblivion takes place at the center of the greatest empire in history at its height. Skyrim takes place after said empire has lost 2/3 of it's land and legitimacy in the land of snowniggers. What the fuck do you think would happen. It's like comparing the city of Rome in 100 AD with Scotland in 500 AD.
>>284249230 >nightmares, agitation, global confusion, disorientation, visual and auditory hallucinations, tactile hallucinations, fever, high blood pressure, heavy sweating, and other signs of autonomic hyperactivity (fast heart rate and high blood pressure) ... uncontrollable tremors of the extremities and secondary symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks and paranoia ... 15% mortality with treatment and up to 35% mortality without treatment
Whoah... so... this is... the power of ... ignorance
I had a love hate relationship with the graphics. The environments were beautiful, but man did I hate the textures. Everything had a shitty bump map, it all looked pudgy like clay or playdough. And then the faces were dog shit, everyone looked terrible, THE ANIMATIONS WERE WORSE THAN MORROWIND. Also the physics were really floaty and it happened in Skyrim too.
>>284228239 oblivion is better game but I agree with the guy who said terrain is worse, it is.
Spots in skyrim actually manage to feel secluded, rather than a fucking fort with dangerous creatures wandering the entrance slaughtering people within an arrows shot of the continents capital in oblivion. Best you get in a location on top of a super flat hill-cliff hybrid you can just jump up or locations like hack dirt that are just a walk across flat Forrest that's a 15 minute walk out from town.
>>284254872 Oh, I'm no alcoholic. The only non-prescribed drugs I go anywhere near are caffeine in tea and pot a few times a year when I go camping. I'm merely pointing out the foolishness of acting as though a severe physiological addiction is something that can be shaken without dire consequences for the user.
>>284254614 >THE ANIMATIONS WERE WORSE THAN MORROWIND. Nobody's going to tell you that Oblivion had good or even decent animations, but they were a pretty damn big step up from Morrowind's. I'm not even sure how that could ever be up for debate in the first place. I'd be happy to be proven wrong with an example or two, though.
Both Morrowind and Oblivion impressed the hell out of a younger me with their visuals when they came out, but no Bethesda game has ever had acceptable animations to my eyes. Not then and certainly not now.
>>284259257 >I've played Oblivion to death and even modding it out the ass couldn't keep me interested long enough because I remember virtually everything. Then you'd probably like it, because it's not Oblivion and there's nothing to remember. It's a totally different game that takes place in a totally different world. Oblivion is just its platform. Nehrim is the sequel to a similar mod they made called "Arktwend" in 2006 that was built using Morrowind as its platform. The upcoming mod "Enderal" will be its sequel built on Skyrim.
If you're ever in the mood for a TES style game but ran out of TES to play, those are your best bets.
>>284232070 I sort of count the dead drop DB quests as one massive quest and with all my mods enabled I have to actually do a full prep and pack tons of potions, picks and shit...then I just go for it, stalking down the targets one by one, laying low in hotels overnight and camping on the roads...hiding in le shadows around ever corner. Used to take me 3 real time days back when I played oblivion like a motherfucker but it was hella immersive.
the best quests were outside of questlines and the main quest wasn't spectacular as a main quest should be. the atmosphere impresses at times and seems stale in others. combat was fun as an archer, but i can not imagine the tedium of melee. excellent game for $12
