Why is Sega so unlucky? How much longer do you think they have before going out of business?
''It was not inevitable," Kalinske, now a vice chairman of edutainment company LeapFrog, said of Sega's struggles. "It could have been avoided if they had made the right decisions going back literally 20 years ago. But they seem to have made the wrong decisions for 20 years."
SONICS ARMS ARE NOT BLUE
THEY'RE NOT BLUE
Had an advantage over the NES with graphics, the SNES came along and they were tied.
Had several expensive hardware add-ons, with terrible games
The Dreamcast cost an arm and a leg at launch. Think Vita had expensive memory? The memory packs were still selling for $40, years after the Dreamcast was discontinued.
Instead of continuing the console wars by siding exclusively with Sony, they licensed out Sonic to Nintendo, which intentionally handled him poorly. Allowed Microsoft to acquire rights to/kill Shenmue. Then created subpar Sony games.
sonic is literally the most abused vidya character ever made
Going the PC/mobile focus would probably be the best for them as things stand now. Although even then, I still have my doubts that PSO2 will ever get a localization. I mean, have they EVER come out with an official statement as to why it's not out yet? The official English website has still been up for like 3 years, they really just seem like they've dropped everything and left it alone.
>they licensed out Sonic to Nintendo, which intentionally handled him poorly.
Anon what the fuck are you talking about
I feel bad for Sonic fans who weren't alive during the Kalinske era. That was the only time in history where you could be a Sonic fan and people wouldn't think there was something deeply wrong with you.
Thats what hurt them the most, fucking no one wants to invest in a company that goes from making hardware and software to software only.
Luckily their handheld games ended up great.
>Nintendo should make all they're games on Sony platforms!
I don't understand why people think like that, the demographic of people who enjoy platformer and etc isn't on Playstation consoles
At least not anymore, rip Naughtydog ;_;
focusing on pc/MOBILE means focusing on shovelware designed to milk consumers IE free to play garbage and indie junk. They are essentially playing the lottery now instead of making good games and being guaranteed a decent profit.
It's more abount fanboys than really wanting to play Nintendo games on "better" hardware.
They would all say: "A-ah, seen that? Now Nintendo makes games for Sony, it's our bitch, you mad Nintendogs? :^)". They don't give a shit about the games themselves.
Nice lies, Dreamcast launched at $199 in the US. That's pretty cheap for a console launch in 1999. Also Dreamcast VMU cards were $25 at launch, but you could easily grab them in 2001 when it was discontinued for $10 or so new and even less used. Hell even 3rd party cards were cheap during the life of the system.
If they could have ported Sonic'06 to Wii, then they would have had more people to finish the game.
Then again, Sega sammy didn't have to demand from Sonic Team to make a original Wii game and rush 2006.
What was the first game Nintendo even personally developed that had Sonic in it, Brawl? Hell, that and Sm4sh are the only games that have Sonic that Nintendo made themselves. If you're talking about the exclusivity contract, Sega shot themselves in the foot with that.
>Lost World was okay I guess, but Sonic Team(?) could have done so much better
>No one cares about the Olympic Games series except for Daisy fanatics
>Sonic Boom was developed by Big Red Button, a shit-tier studio that was given a shit-tier budget
How different would things be if Kalinske stayed with Sega? At least throughout the Saturn? I'm trying to not envision a perfect "what if" world, but he really helped the US branch get themselves on the map, and after he left everything started going to shit again.
Lets list all the retarded choices they have made, shall we?
>Letting the Dreamcast die
>Letting several franchises die by not making new games
>NOT FUCKING MAKING PSO2 IN THE WEST, HOLY FUCK, FUCK YOU.
>Not providing server software for PSU after it was shutdown, you cunts.
Going by what the article says, SEGA (of America) went to Sony. Possibly before/after Sony went to Nintendo but SEGAs board in Japan rejected the plans.
SEGA of Japan's board of faggots. They are generally behind all the retarded decisions SEGA has done for the past 20 years.
>The Dreamcast cost an arm and a leg at launch.
>Instead of continuing the console wars by siding exclusively with Sony, they licensed out Sonic to Nintendo, which intentionally handled him poorly.
What the hell are you talking about?
>Letting the Dreamcast die
You sound like you didn't know it was a commercial failure in the first place.
Due to Sega pumping out console after console every fucking 2 years they didn't have the funds to make the dream cast good.
Funny enough, if Sega actually decided to do the deal with Microsoft we wouldn't have Xbox and the dreamcast would have had better hardware.
Mario isn't abused at all, all his games are varying degrees of good.
Sonic games have swung between "shit" and "this wasn't shit so Sonic must be finally getting back on the right track", which is then immediately followed by shit.
>Shoving development of the 32x on the US with the Saturn only right around the corner.
>Surprise release of the Saturn exclusively at 4 different retailers, thus pissing off other retailers into not carrying Sega product.
>Nobody knows it's out, not selling, devs get pissed too.
>Severe quality control limits many games being localized from Japan (EU got more Saturn games than the US).
>PlayStation sells more units in its first month than Saturn with its 4 month head start.
for fuck sakes. Sony as a company is in a bad spot, but the division responsible for video games is probably the only one turning a profit.
There's a clear difference you fucking mongoloid.
I have the solution to all of your troubles.
Stop doing Sonics. Don't spend any more money on Sonic games. People don't like Sonic anymore. Instead, use that money that you were going to spend on Sonic, and instead, spend it on Yakuza. People love Yakuza.
>Yuji Naka restricting the use of his game engine for Sonic Extreme
>Shenmue 1 and 2's budget vs profit
>letting their other IPs rot
>not adapting to the economic climate during the 7th gen
we could go on all day
THE ONLY reason Sega was king in the mid 90s was because of Tom Kalinske, that man made all of the right decisions
when he went to the board of Sega all of the JAPANESE told him he was crazy but the CEO of Sega let him do his plan in America and Europe and guess what? IT WORKED
the Japanese executives got mad that he made them look like idiots and they made it their mission to try and fire or take away all the power from Tom and so they destroyed Sega
fucking Japanese idiots, SEGA was started by Americans and later got into Japanese hands so it was never a jap company to begin with so all of the jap pride made no sense
It's because they made Sonic's arms blue.
If they recall all Sonic Boom merchandise and games, and pull the cartoon off the air so they can fix Sonic's arms, then maybe they won't go out of business.
How to read this as a Sega executive:
I have the solution.
doing Sonics. spend any more money on Sonic games. People like Sonic anymore. spend on Sonic
>Shenmue 1 and 2's budget vs profit
I'm glad we got a good product out of it, but these games really put them in the red. Suzuki must have had a lot of pull in the company to not be told "No," especially after coming out of the Saturn.
>VF4 is a huge success in the west
>proceeds to localize 5 with 0 advertising and then only giving the 360 version online support with awful netcode that never got patched
>WOWWWWWWW GUESS NOBODY LIKES VIRTUA FIGHTER
I don't even think they've advertised a single Yakuza game which is probably their biggest seller in Japan and for good reason.
>Anarchy Reigns is getting advertisement and releases in Japan
>Delay the western release when it's 100% translated for 6 months just because they can with 0 advertising
>WOWWWW GUESS NOBODY WANTED IT
>Bayonetta sells 2 million copies with a planned sequel
>cancel it just because
>WOWWWW HOW WAS I SUPPOSE TO KNOW PEOPLE WANTED IT?
>Proceeds to shovel out Sonic for over a decade when every single one of them are awful
>Proceeds to localize the Miku games only because they take 0 effort even though they all sell like hot garbage in the west
I wouldn't even want it at this point. We'd be perpetually behind the JP servers by at least a year, just like PSU.
If it came out I'd just stick with the pretty much entirely translated JP version with a sizable English population.
>the Japanese executives got mad that he made them look like idiots and they made it their mission to try and fire or take away all the power from Tom and so they destroyed Sega
This is true ?
>>Bayonetta sells 2 million copies with a planned sequel
>>cancel it just because
This. People who are butthurt over Bayonetta 2 being a Wii U exclusive need to realize it's really due to Sega not staying on board as the publisher.
lol Japanese said
They said they didn’t like anything I had told them and disagreed with all of it, 100%. They didn’t agree that we should advertise against Nintendo, staff up the U.S. to develop software, reduce the price of the hardware, or put our best title in with the hardware, and I can’t remember all the other stuff they didn’t agree with. Basically, they didn’t agree with any of it, and I thought that well, this was the shortest career anyone ever had! That’s it, three months, and I have to go find another job. But at the door, as he was walking out, Nakayama turned and said “but we hired you to make all the decisions for the United States and Europe, and so, that’s what we want you to do, even though we think you’re crazy and don’t agree with it, go ahead and do it.”
The only reason Miku even did well is because of how hardcore vocaloid fans are, and how popular Miku is on the internet thanks to EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE catching on so hard all those years ago, it's not like they advertised that game either, so that selling well was just dumb luck.
That's true. Sega also hasn't handled the servers for the PSO series in the US very well in the past, either. If anyone really wants to play it, they really just need to get the JP version and the English patch and enjoy that instead of holding out for a version that we may not ever get, and even if it does, it'll be so far behind in content as you said.
There's plenty of shitty games bearing Mario's name as well, but you are right, Sonic series is like a dumpster - you might find something decent in there, but in the end it's still full of
They're relatively easy localizations, and the resources that go into it are worth it for the niche but dedicated fan base. Hell they didn't even translate any of the songs for the first PDF game.
Dunno. My friend wasn't allowed in an arcade when I was just because he's indian and i'm asian. We also passed by another SEGA arcade that had a sign in all caps saying "NO AMERICANS ALLOWED"
I think Sony and Sega tried to work out a deal on a joint console after the Sony/Nintendo partnership went to shit. There's a pretty good book about Sega during the Kalinske years called Console Wars that goes into detail about it.
This is true. It's actually more common in mom and pop stores than arcades. There are tons of shops that won't let non-Japanese customers in and have large signs on the door saying so.
I've been to Club Sega in Akihabara several times and nobody ever gave me any shit.
Actually, they'll let you in if you speak japanese, it's the same for Soaplands, Pink Saloons and different types of brothels in general. The ones that will let you in without asking anything have probably korean or chinese girls.
"We want a 3D version of the original Genesis games, no more drama."
>They give us Sonic Heroes, their first of many "assembly-line" titles after the drop out from the console race
"Okay, juggling all of these characters fucking sucks and why the fuck is Shadow alive?"
>They give us Shadow The Hedgehog which is 90% fanfiction literally taken from the internet based off of different fan theories why Shadow is alive, the multiple endings even reflecting the most popular theories
"Okay fuck this cheap ass shit, give us a game that's as decent as the Adventure games again, they were at least palatable."
>Sega forces 2006 to be rushed out the door before it's even 2/3s done, literally didn't even have time to bug test anything, just because of Microsoft's demands
"OKAY, HOW ABOUT YOU GIVE US A GAME THAT'S JUST SONIC. HOW CAN YOU FUCK THAT UP?"
>Sonic Unleashed, padded to hell in back with coin collecting and awful Werehog gameplay just so the game wouldn't be 1.5 hours long
>So hell bent on making the game ONLY Sonic that they literally only made the Werehog up so you'd still be playing as "Sonic" despite the different gameplay
"We'll take ANYTHING. Unleashed was half there, just drop the Werehog!"
>Sonic Colors is actually decent
>Sonic Generations comes out
"Oh goodness, this is actually somewhat playable, you guys are on the right track, just keep going...!"
Then LOL Sonic Boom
damn yeah Japan is all upside down, back in the day their way of doing business worked but today because of globalization and competition their retarded boss respect model is obsolete
in the west when a lower employee does something amazing the bosses congratulate them
in Japan if a low employee does the same the boss will scold him for making him look bad even though it helped the company
shit makes no sense
I spent most of my time in the sega arcades in Akihabara and didn't hear jack shit from any of them. The whole place is one big tourist spot so there's no reason they wouldn't want foreigners to hang out there.
>Plus its their own fault that Bayo 2 sold like ass.
Yeah where regularly whichever third party would promote their game in conjunction with Sony/MS/Nintendo.
SEGA basically did jack and just left it to Platinum and Nintendo. It's worse than when Square needed Nintendo to publish and market Dragon Quest IX in the west for them.
This guy has a pretty good record. I think he did really well in the toy industry in the 70s or 80s. He helped make Mattel relevant again, if I'm not mistaken. He was also head of Sega of America during Sega's peak years. And I still see Leapfrog shit everywhere.
This is what dumb casuals who never actually experienced the system and just parrot everything they heard from shitty websites believe.
>they licensed out Sonic to Nintendo, which intentionally handled him poorly
Seriously, anon? Seriously.
Sonic the problem is that the games are just too god damn inconsistent. Sonic 1-4 where tight enough games that you obviously knew that they were a sonic games. Adventure games came out and while not as tight they at least felt like they related to each other. Then the went to hero's and couldn't for the life of them just sick with something consistent after that. Its hard to keep a fanbase when each game is so fundamentally different and hops around consoles.
Meanwhile, in the handheld department;
>Advance games were god-tier, even with Sonic Advance 2 being a pit hell it's better than a lot of shit
>Sonic Rush is okay, most people just like it due to the music and Blaze
>Sonic Rush Adventure is a bit better but is received not as well, people getting tired of how crappy the Rush gameplay actually is
>Sonic Colors DS is pretty awful all around, people united in wanting DIMPS gone since they can't produce Advance-quality games any more
>Sonic Generations 3DS was abysmal, people yelling at Sega to get rid of DIMPS
>Sonic Lot World, still DIMPS, horrendous level designs half the time and flat and empty levels you just run straight through the other half
>Sega finally drops DIMPS
>For some company that makes the Sonic Boom 3DS game, which is just a generic piece of shit title you'd expect for Activision licensed titles
>not a retarded decision
nigga, can you count with more than one hand how many people you knew who had a Sega CD growing up?
>Sonic Rush is okay, most people just like it due to the music and Blaze
>Sonic Rush Adventure is a bit better but is received not as well, people getting tired of how crappy the Rush gameplay actually is
>Sonic Colors DS is pretty awful all around, people united in wanting DIMPS gone since they can't produce Advance-quality games any more
What the fuck are you smoking?
Sega CD was a bad decision because it was another console that splintered off focus from the Genesis, which is all they should have been concentrating on.
Having said that, I had a Sega CD when I was growing up and loved it to death. Still have it hooked up, in fact.
None of 3D Sonic games are any good. Adventure games are terrible and Colors/Generation are soulless rail boosters. The day that ANY 3D Sonic game released is even HALF as good as the worst 3D Mario will be a heart-stopping miracle. Anyway, to answer your question 3&K.
Sega CD was actually made to compete with the PC Engine CD, it was rushed, the hardware design is a mess (it requires some specific interruptions in order to access Genesis hardware). It succeeded where the PC Engine CD failed, conquering America, but the PC Engine CD was the lead CD console in those years.
>>Sonic Generations 3DS was abysmal
It wasn't abysmal as much as it was boring.
Modern was just basic Rush gameplay.
Classic was pretty much copypaste genesis levels and your basic 2D side scroller based on other Sonic stages.
No, Sonic Generations 3DS was abysmal and the modern levels sucked too. Go look up gameplay of radical highway. Bullshit enemy spawns, shit platforming, the game was horrendous
>Current CEO Kaz Hirai’s days are numbered, those insiders are whispering.
Saying Sony is in a bad spot is an understatement.
I can remember magazines slamming the Sega CD because at the time there was a big push for FMV games like Night Trap, most which were pretty bad. But the games that were actual games like Sonic and Lunar were pretty good.
>Buy Sonic Generations d1
>I loved it
>"Maybe they are finally doing decent choices?"
>Sonic Boom release
>It's completely shit and flopped very hard, didn't even reached half of Sonic Generations sales numbers
>Lost hope on Sega again
And then Sega left good games like Binary Domains, Vanquish, Yakuza, Anarchy Reigns, Valkyria Chronicles because they don't know how to markerting games that isn't Sonic.
Only Sega Europe/UK had create some kind of hope thanks to the partial fix of Dreamcast Collection and Valkyria Chronicles's port on PC (which is pretty good)
It's Sega Japan that have to die in a fucking fire.
>Yakuza 0 have a 64-bit PC port to create the best experience but they will not release it because they don't want profit on Yakuza on other platforms
I knew plenty of people who owned a Sega CD growing up. Granted they were older kids who were in middle/high school that didn't need their parents to buy everything for them, but still.
weird. i was "that kid" that had the only Sega CD in my school. it wasn't even mine, either, it was my uncle's
>Classic was pretty much copypaste genesis levels
Only for the first three levels.
The rest were fucking awful, grid-styled levels where you were constantly boxed in. Emerald Coast and Radical Highway being the worst for that shit. It's like DIMPS shat their diapers the moment they had to think of something they couldn't just copy and paste from.
Yes, but even taking out the FMV games there are a couple of games that were really rushed and full of problems. Silpheed for example looks great, but one reading problem while you are playing and you have to start over the game...
Sega is currently going through that fall where you pick up speed in order to regain balance but you know you're going to fall on your face anyway, and your hands are fumbling in your pockets because you know what's coming.
If I remember right it wasn't just because they're cheap it's also because they were afraid that the translated lyrics to a couple of the songs would bump the age rating up. I think the offending songs were Eh? Ah, Sou (Hm? Ah, Yes) and Sweet Devil.
>Kalinske went on to say that one of the main reasons he quit Sega in 1996 was because the board rejected his idea for a Sega-Sony collaborative game console. As part of this arrangement, which was first revealed in 2006, Sega and Sony would have shared the development costs (and initial losses) of the system, but benefit from software sales.
Holy shit, this would have been awesome.
Daily reminder Sega had a downloadable Streets of Rage game that was 80% done and they canned it.
I can only imagine how many franchise revivals from pic related were canned in favor of yet another Sonic game to keep them on lifesupport.
RIP Comix Zone, Phantasy Star, Ristar and Jet Set. You were too good for this world.
>no more virtualON
T-Thanks sega of japan
>I though the PS4 was selling tons ?
They didn't make much from it. Huge advertising costs for all those TV spots and sponsorships, Sony paid for exclusive rights to pay to advertise Watch_Dogs and Destiny and they only get a cut off those sales. Their 1st party titles not being anywhere close to the top sellers on the system.
It has a high amount of sales but Sony have been spending far far more to get the sales that they have with PS4 than for example Nintendo did with the Wii which sold millions more in the same time frame(and a large proportion of sales were 1st party software which doesn't have to be split with a publisher).
I beat it, and then wondered why I wasted my time. Emerald Coast was a shitty stage, radical highway was awful
They ripped this off and didn't even get it right
That video is the only thing SEGA needs to do with Sonic and they just fucking won't.
It's mostly because the whole company mostly makes the majority of it's profits from non-game related hardware, eg phones etc. They are completely fairling to sell that kind of stuff these days, and are actualy losing more money than their gameing hardware/software makes.
>tfw Nintendo saved Bayonetta
can they save some other sega ips too?
Other execs at Sony are getting rid of him because he wants to destroy Sony as an electronics company to focus on a highly cyclical gaming business (look at the Vita vs PSP or PS4 dropping rapidly YOY). They are smart to get rid of him ASAP.
The sad part is that Sonic isn't inherently bad. His concept is solid and fun, and most of all, CAN be good. Its just that the people handling him are worse than fucking Hitler who just want to drive him to the ground with no regard for his life, while the other Sega IPs are forced to sit in their jail cells and watch.
PSO2 is already done, the SEA release was the engrish version
sega cant afford to release it because their budget got fucked for the west because of aliens colonial marines and sonic lost world
boom probably did not help
that said sega is currently in a lawsuit with gearbox because they used most of the funds for borderlands 2, if they win gearbox may go under and sega might release some games people want
Scared would be the right word. They've got a lot of franchises but Sonic is easily the most popular of them all, and the most likely to sell based entirely on name recognition alone.
Some fans may kill for a new Jet Set Radio or Ristar or whatever but kids don't recognize that shit. Sega's in such a hole that they don't want to risk making a game that won't get the maximum possible profits. At the same time Sonic's fluctuating quality and general bad reputation is also putting them in a tight spot and having no back up plans is incredibly dangerous.
Basically Sega's fucked and they're too stupid to fix anything.
No shit bad decisions is what put companies in trouble and good decisions are the good ones to take. Wow that's totally an expert talk there. The problem is that you actually don't know most of that when you actually take those.
SEGA Europe is successful with Total War, Football Manager, 4k and recently the Valkyria Chronicles PC port.
Only SEGA of America is dumbfuck retarded. But so is Microsoft. Guess americans have a lack of business sense.
>they win gearbox may go under
It would be the most awesome thing ever, but we didn't got any news about it for a least a year.
>Sega of America
You should add Sega of Japan too, they had to approve the Sonic Boom design/game/cartoon
>Guy comes and fixes their shit.
>Most likely resulting in a wicked raise for all the high-ups.
>They fuck him over anyway.
>Imagining how wet she must have become
>implying any of those IPs would sell nowadays
The reason why SEGA lost was retarded management AND petting on the success of arcade games on their consoles.
Sony knew that you can only be successful if you get a new audience into videogames. And they made that by turning consoles in CS/DVD/BD players.
Just three years ago we had Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed, Shinobi was a gem in the 3DS' infantile library, Jet Set Radio HD was out with people clamoring for a JSRF remake, a promising new Total War game was just on the horizon, and Generations was released with Sonic riding a two game streak out of the Sonic Cycle.
Where did it all go so wrong /v/?
It's not bad luck if they just won't stop making idiotic decisions. And what's the deal with them not being able to toss out a 3D sonic game that doesn't play like shit, have bad voice acting, or isn't plagued by glitches? Ever since 3D sonic games have been a thing, they have always had two or more of these problems, every single one, and SEGA has never fixed them.
>thinking Sonic Racing was a sign of good things to come at all and not just some fluke
gearbox took several million dollars for sega which was all part of a contract and used it for their own game
they are in fucking trouble
what if bungie took all the microsoft money, shit out a cheap broken game and used all the funds to make a new oni or some shit?
oy vey indeed
jesus christ, have you seen the Alone in the Dark game that's been recently announced? Like a month or two back? It looked like shit that could've been 'trendy' back in 2008.
Jesus Christ, the company is so shit it's painful.
SEGAs problem was them wanting to stay focused on videogames.
Nintendo survived by going full happy kids menu family entertainment.
Sony made a moviebox.
Can't compete with that if you stay loyal to your small audience instead of going mainstream.
If this thread has taught me anything is that Japanese businessmen are quite literally the worse.
Like, can you even comprehend it? You have an entire nation who's most respectable life path is growing up and being a salary man. Except the entire business climate is pants on head retarded and simply doesn't work on multiple levels due to arbitrary cultural ideologies. So basically we have an entire country of businessmen who for the most part are shit at business on a global scale.
If japan wasn't so good at making porn and candy I'd drop them years ago.
Sonic Racing was a hype ass celebration of Sega's history filled to the brim with fan service, and a better cart racer than any Mario Kart game. If there's one thing to take away from it it's that Sega should outsource more of their games to Sega fanboys.
The problem is it lacked a selection of good titles to justify it, not to mention a majority hated how it required another power cable to use it. There are some gems here and there, but it wasnt worth it in the end.
Speaking of, i'd really wish they'd port this shit over, not only does it have the Sword of Hajya in a superior format, but it has way more content. Remake the infamous third game while you're at it.
The fucking devs are with Nintendo, and Sega's been partnered with em for awhile, how is this not possible?
>They had spent all that time and effort on what they thought >was the perfect video game chipset, so what were they >supposed to do with it? I told them that there were other >companies that they should be calling, because we clearly >weren’t the ones for them. Needless to say, he did, and that >chipset became part of the next generation of Nintendo >products (N64).
The butt hurt was real.
The Dreamcast was a fine system. The reason it failed had less to do with its quality and more to do with the countless fuck ups Sega had prior to it. It's really the Saturn that killed the Dreamcast.
>If this thread has taught me anything is that Japanese businessmen are quite literally the worse.
Thankfully everything is about to go to shit since its those old men who caused every problem japan has today
>not kids being born
>TONS of NEET/perma virgin hikkis both male and female
>hug population of old people
>old people diapers outselling baby diapers
>entire generation of young men caught up with escapism and shit and have no interest in their own culture or society at large
Its a recipe for suicide
AOSTH is what sparked some shit and wasnt based on anything related to the series yet ironically became funny as soon as it became the target of YTP, but the SatAM series wasnt all that bad as it focused on the comic series, which had a decent plot up to certain points that i'm sure many are familiar with.
Penders shitty OC Dunsteal series, the high school shit, etc
>Homefronts budget was higher than THQ worth at that time
Capcom is a master of shitty decisions too
>No Dragons Dogma PC release
>Monster Hunter still have shitty graphics for no real reason and expect doing cheap
>Resident Evil Post-4
>Wasted Ips List is fucking huge
>the list is probably longer or same as Sega's bullshit choices
It's like both of them were born by the same mother.
I'm heading there to watch the transition happen and hopefully start my life over in a strange land where I can re-shape my destiny from the beginning. Will I make it? Only time will tell. Wish me luck!
>So basically we have an entire country of businessmen who for the most part are shit at business on a global scale.
U wot m8?
that is a lot of not ALL Japanese companies, in Japan gamers buy the same shit over and over and I mean every game is like cod in which it is the same shit year after year
in the west we can only take cod or sport games like that
people wont go for clones either but in japan clone games sell like crazy too
that was simply a corporate espionage fuckup
they had some guy in nintendo tell them nintendo was making a tablet gizmo for the wii
not realizing the tablet was part of a whole new system
so they tried to beat nintendo to the punch, by making a tablet for consoles
ballsy gamble if anything, I like to think that spy is at the bottom of a lake with cinderblocks tied to his legs
Cash holdings are not a good thing. It means your money is literally doing nothing but devaluing. Keeping nearly half your your holdings in cash money is just pissing it away.
They do it in order to create a false image of success to their investors- not because they're making so much fucking money they literally can't invest it all.
>skies of arcadia
>the house of the dead
it hurts, anon. it hurts so much.
Downfall started with 32X and then the parabola peaked when the Saturn came out. Then boom. BTFO to 3rd party dev....
Then its been Bad sonic games until we got to our present state.
This really should happen, but it might be one of those "anti-mod" things.
They sacrifice graphics for smooth gameplay and quality.
>RE post 4
Seperate part of the company. Their all shitters
10 megaman games, eight(?) X games, four zero games, two zx games, the battle network series, and a whole crapton else. This is a ton of games. Almost as much as mario. The difference is that mario is the staple to nintendo. Only thing i'd wamt different is actually GETTING FUCKING LEGENDS 3 GOD DAMMIT
>wasted ips list is huge
Name one company that isnt like this
>same bullshit choices as sega
They didn't fuck up a console.
>Can they win
They had a contract, for gearbox to take a lot of dosh and use that to make a game.
Gearbox took the dosh, used maybe 8% of it on the game, most of it for ads and then used the rest for memelands 2.
>yfw Anthony birch was part of the reason we don't have ps2 or a new jet set radio
It might take a few years in court, but when it ends gearbox will have to turn over a huge amount of the profits for borderlands 2 to sega to makeup the loss.
What ip's other than aliens did they ruin? DNF was all 3drealms they were just lazy and made it playable instead of working from the ground up.
I really want them to do tho. Fuck gearbox
Will there be a Bayo 3? Bayonetta 2 was amazing, but did it sell well enough to warrant a sequel?
Are you the same retard a week or so ago saying that Nintendo is fucked [because] they have 7.8 billion dollars in cash?
Everything that went wrong is solely because of Sega of Japan's board of directors.
Kalinske and his team at Sega of America were EVERYTHING that made Sega relevant in the early 90's. They looked at Sonic, saw an enjoyable game, and marketed it to hell and back.
From that point forward Kalinske successfully managed to score deals with Sony and Silicon Graphics to secure technology for next-gen 64-bit systems. Lo and behold, Sega of Japan cockblocks him and Sony and Nintendo are laughing all the way to the bank while Sega dies a slow and painful death.
Fuck Sega of Japan's upper management. Fuck them and everything they stand for.
>Cash holdings are not a good thing
So Apple is fucked and they suck. Thanks for playing.
And yet they insult the very game by putting skies characters in the mediocre Valkyria Chronicles which spits on the faces of those characters especially in the anime and manga adaptions.
He would have been pushed out by Sega Japan since they refused to listen to him and made retarded decisions. Sega were set to have the definitive Capcom ports, best Mortal Kombat 3 port with an arcade perfect UMK3 and a new Eternal Champions on the way which Sega America were ready to fight the PS1 by showing how Saturn would be getting the best ports of Arcade games. And SOJ ordered it all to be buried because of the sub par Virtua Fighter 1 port including cancelling Eternal Champions 3.
Basically retarded decisions everywhere.
Probably. It's a passion project. It wasn't the worst selling console exclusive last year (That was Driveclub). I doubt Nintendo would fund it on Wii U though. Likely for a new console.
Classic Sonic died when Tom Kalinske left the company.
It's best to not even consider the modern stuff the same franchise. It's best to not even consider modern Sega the same company.
Sonic and Sega are dead.
He is likely a retarded American who is brainwashed by Bloomberg news. One of the best kept secrets in the west is how rich the Japs are.
Sony's pulling a capcom selling off shit that doesn't make a profit. I remember they sold off the Vaio laptop line, and I think the Bravia line of telly and SOE and I remember them killing off their re-launching of the walkman line of mp3 players. iirc, they're keeping Playstation, Sony Entertainment and the phones.
It is pretty interesting. I think Kalinske and Sega are supposed to be the main focus of the book, but Nintendo gets an almost equal amount of attention. It talks about Sony a lot as well, especially towards the end.
The failed Sony/Nintendo and Sega/Sony collaborations, Donkey Kong Country (and Rare in general), the history of Nintendo, Sega's marketing campaigns, negotiations between video game companies and retailers, SoA vs SoJ--there's a lot of neat stuff in it.
Except apple does actually invest in shit. Yeah they have cash holdings but they actually do things with their cash too. These companies just sit on money to make themselves look more competent then they actually are. Any healthy company would be using money to expand, invest, and research. It doesn't do a company good to just sit around have a large pile of cash doing fuck all.
It's very interesting and informative, though it's mostly about Sega's underdog story it talks a lot about Nintendo's rise as well and it even goes in detail about the failed Super Mario Bros. movie.
The writing style is a little awkward, though the source material is legit and well researched it dramatizes quite a few things, you can tell it's basically a screenplay in book form (there's a movie of it in the works).
It's definitely worth reading if you can.
>Sega makes good games
>proceeds to list 2 games developed by Platinum
It's a good read but it's got a ton of agenda as well. Especially the Sony parts because Sony Pictures optioned the screenplay well before the book was even finished. There's nothing really about how brutal Sony got against potential competitors like SNK and how they spent a lot of money just keeping games off Nintendo platforms rather than funding them as PS exclusives. That stuff they pulled with Psygnosis was fucking brutal but never really detailed. Short of it is, Sony bought them. They had contracts with Nintendo and Sega signed for WipeOut conversions and some other Saturn games. Sony initially said they were going honor them. Soon after, Psygnosis cans the games claiming they were not progressing in development quick enough. Nintendo, Sega and Midway call bullshit and bring Sony to court. Court finds Sony was pulling shit and ordered Sony to pay legal costs and to finish the games.
90's was dirty as shit. Shame no one is around to spill the beans
More like Investors are dumping Kaz because once they found somebody else who knew where to take Sony. They only kept Kaz Hirai around because they couldn't find somebody else could push the needle in the Sony. Yoshida is already showing more balls then Kaz ever did by burning brigdes, and forcing Sony to change.
Yoshida is what Sony needed because he is willing to fix, and destroy the old broken culture within Sony to make a better Sony. Sony suffer for years of idiotic management that ruined their products. Sony hack is a becoming blessing for Sony because it will destroy all of the terrible culture within Sony too.
Sega is good example of a company of great potienal driven to the ground because their top level management culture is terrible. All their old god tier employees leave because the top managment didn't know what to do with their tools and assets. The fact that Sega never had somebody like Yamauchi who can stop infighting between divisions, and had bold visionary for their company is what Sega lacked.
Kalinske wanted Sony to make the successor to the Genesis, but SoJ refused.
Then he wanted SGI to make their next-gen system, but once again SoJ refused.
Then he quit the company out of anger towards the retarded Japs.
Apparently the Playstation division and film division absolutely hate each other and Shu Yoshida was boasting that Playstation is the division saving Sony which pissed off Michael Lynton huge. So that's going to be interesting how they solve that.
>Space Channel 5
>Nope better make another half assed Sanic game kids will buy it either way
At least Ninty gave us another Bayo.
The entire time I read the book, it felt like it was written by a Sega fanboy. Even though it was heavily downplaying the succeses of the Super Nintendo, I gave it the benefit of doubt because he was very factual as well. That was.. until I saw his on stage Q&A where he exposed himself as a SEGA fanboy.
- Downplaying the Wii and the DS
- Damage controlling fuck ups of SEGA when Tom Kalinske was around.
- Being mad at his little nephew for liking Sonic & Mario being together in 1 game.
The movie is going to be one giant hit piece against Nintendo.
Hes not wrong.
The genesis was outselling the SNES at a normal 2 to 1 ratio (and in some months, mostly Christmas season, it was topping at 3 to 1). Almost every 3rd party dev broke the contracts signed with nintendo (so many, in fact, that it became almost impossible to sue them all and nintendo told Lincoln to not sue anyone because it was to much) and everyone pretty much hated nintendo (dev wise). No one liked working with yamauchi and sega benefited from that.
Then sega japan told sega america to discontinue the genesis for the saturn, despite them JUST releasing the 32x/CD and the system STILL outselling the SNES month after month. Sega america tried to fight it using logic, but sega japan forced them to since they where a subsidiary (this was one of the main reasons sega americas most successful head left. he was tired of dealing with japan's stupid decisions).
Saturn bombed. But because of the forced discontinue, there was no where else to buy genesis since it wasnt able to be sold in normal stores, so sega was fucked on that one. Continued problem after problem plagued them (the CD and 32x wernt exactly cheap to R&D, and japan never gave them time to get an install base).
After the 32x, CD, and saturn, segas deep pockets became pretty shallow and the faith was gone from the general public.
This is wrong, the SNES was selling really well into the 1994, when Donkey Kong Country came along, it was all over for the Genesis. While the genesis had 60% of the market, it quickly feel to 55% that year and then into second place by 1995.
The SNES still had strong third party support, Konami, Square, Capcom, etc still made some of the best games on the system.
Platinum developed Vanquish and Bayonetta. Sega were just the publishers. In fact Sega who was in charge of the PS3 port of Bayonetta fucked it up badly it needed a big update to fix most of the problems.
It's too busy painting SoA as saints when they were also as guilty as Nintendo when they started shafting Commodore and NEC out of the market too as the Amiga was a huge success in Europe and had Commodore repeated that in the US, they would have survived.
It really doesn't hold a candle to Dean Takashi's Xbox books either because those were absolutely fucking brutal even though Takashi had access to all the major execs (Fries, Allard, Blackley, Moore) and even had ancedotes passed to him about Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer screaming matches and the 1st party team being so inexperienced they lost potential console exclusives like GTA 3 and Resident Evil 4.
The SNES almost killed the Playstation in it's first year because the 1995 SNES lineup absolutely smoked the PS1 and it's mostly god awful line up. Sony got lucky Nintendo flubbed the N64 launch so hard while having a much better line up in 1996.
DCK came out about 7 months before the genesis was discontinued. DCK also became their best selling game, even outselling SMW (which only had a higher install base because it was included with SNES after year 2 or 3).
SNES only sold more systems than genesis about a year and a half after genesis stopped being sold. SNES was being destroyed by genesis so much, that yamauchi hired yakuza to hang out at sega's arcades
Go do your research.
Fucking normies treating him like shit.
Nintendo gets a lot of attention in the book and I wouldn't say it's overly negative. It basically just describes Nintendo's mindset and business practices at the time. I don't remember it being a hit piece at all.
Sure, the author chooses the narrative of Sega as the scrappy underdog and Nintendo as the 'establishment' on top of the world. That's a dramatized and maybe even simplistic view of how it was, but it's not like it's completely removed from reality either.
If anything, it's biased in favor of SoA over SoJ. It's more a hit piece against SoJ than Nintendo, at any rate.
>So we have all these beloved IP's that we haven't done anything with in a while, do you think
>You're fired Steve
Why didn't Sega ever consider the possibility of splitting up their teams into making like 10$ small sequels to sell on virtual stores?
They would be cheap to produce and would easily make the money back. And provide funds for bigger projects.
Theoretically you could do small reboots in Unity or UE4 but the risk is so massive these days it's not worth it because everyone could say "Oh I will buy that" then when the game comes out say "Nah".
It's a shitty business.
Does it atleast cover the Gameboy as well? Because in discussions of the 4th gen it's largely glossed over that Nintendo was then supporting 2 successful systems simultaneously and ended up selling far more units compared to NES and Game & Watch.
The best thing Sega can do to save face is to make a console again, they have the franchises to do it and the money (ZIRP) to do it. Unfortunately they have lost almost all their talented devs and no retailer would risk stocking a Sega console. Sega is a case study of how NOT to run a game console manufacturer.
I think the problem with Sega is that they couldn't carry on the good quality of work they did with the Dreamcast. They lost the momentum once they went software only. Many of those early 2000 multi-platform games were basically unfinished Dreamcast games they ported over and finished up. After that they just struggled to make anything good and played it safe by simply dissolving/shrinking down dev teams and focus more on publishing.
Its a shame since SEGA has some very strong IPs and still make/get involved in some pretty good stuff, but they don't seem to have faith in these classic IPs, nor do they have faith in localisation of stuff that works well in Japan. If anything they need to double down and start taking more risk, rather than fizzle out. It can work, if they are smart about it. They could sell these rebooted IPs as digital-only games, and bundle them together in retail later. They can test the waters and see what the market ACTUALLY wants instead of what marketers tell them they want and go from there. They got a strong brand but if they want to stay relevant then they have to go underground, back to basics.
>Launch with Persona 6, New Sonic Adventure, Jet Set Radio 3, etc
>all Atlus games become exclusive
I bet they could do good business if all branches of Sega worked together and put it all on the line.
Won't happen, since Sega of today has no balls. The Sega we all grew up with in the past? They'd take that gamble, and likely profit from the payoff >>284467351 said.
Instead, we got them putting the top talent of Sonic Team on a mobile Sonic game, when Generations nailed everything perfectly nearly 4 years ago, and major franchises they used to have like Phantasy Star have been out of the limelight outside of Asian markets so long, that Sega lacks brand recognition anymore. At this point in the US, they're basically just "Those guys who make Sonic games" and incidentally have the license to Alien games for the moment.
Sega forced itself into obscurity by this point, and it's such damaged goods by now that I don't see them really being able to recover and gain momentum, just all downhill from here until they're bought out or bankrupt down the road.
Brawl was made by Sakurai (who quit Nintendo) and a team of last second hires.
Smash 4 was made by Sakurai and Namco.
Olympics are developed by Sega, published by Nintendo in some countries.
Sonic has never even been developed by Nintendo.
>Skies of Arcadia is dead
>After Burner is dead
>Jet Set Radio is dead
>Shenmue is dead
>Valkyrie Chronicles is nihongo only now
>Super Monkey Ball is mobile only now
>Virtua Fighter is forgotten
>NiGHTS is forgotten
Oh god I did not fucking need this. The next Yakuza game better be damn good.
>Sony as a company is in a bad spot, but the division responsible for video games is probably the only one turning a profit.
It's not. You do know that as a publicly traded company, you can easily get access to their investor information package, right?
Sony is only making its money on its film division and their Japanese insurance division.
Playstation is closer to the "break even" point.
Every other division is burning money at light speed.
Please shut Sonic's mouth. Make it so he never speaks again. This would be redeeming to the entire franchise. I do not want to know what Sonic or any of his friends are feeling.
>release Yakuza 1 with Japanese GTA Marketing
>release Yakuza 2 with no real marketing
>release Yakuza 3 with ugly as fuck cover, cut-content and no marketing
>release Yakuza Dead Souls, stopping yakuza releases and blamed the customers
>make a release of Yakuza 1&2 HD for Jap WiiU, failing miserably and not porting to the west digitally for PS3
>don't released Kenzan and Ishin to the west
>Drop Canvas Engine after Valkyria Chronicles for PS3
>Release VC2 for PSP when it got the community on PS3, dropping the engine and make a MEH anime.
>Release VC3 Jap Only because piracy on psp and blamed west customers.
How dumb can they be?
You know your company is going down the shitter when the chairman of fucking Leapfrog is saying you're doing everything wrong.
Lol, the Genesis or MEga Drive, was a disaster in Japan. Nintendo outsold it everywhere else, it only took a while to be the same in North America. And the Genesis was sold well into 1996 -1997.
I'm not a Sonic fan or weaboo. At all
But I *was* a creative assembly fan for the longest. Sega made shit like blood in battles a DLC pay thing, when it should have been an in game option. They also seem to love day 1 dlc, the bane of the games industry.
Really dislike sega. I'm glad to see former execs spraking truths. Of course we all know it's an shitty company, but it's a big deal to have a former insider name names and drop dimes. It's the first step towards a possible fix.
WWE is like this, Vince is too stubborn to listen to his lower employees and anyone who does the right is buried.
Same as a close case to mine, I asked some legal stuff to a web friend of mine, and now he is almost getting kicked up off law school for replying to me.
Watch the "Fix" just be Sammy saying "Fuck it. Microsoft will cut us a Five Billion dollar cheque for it. They almost did in 2000 after all".
Seriously. I've heard from a mate working Codemasters Guildford MS are sniffing around picking up a publisher and it's likely going to be either Codemasters or Sega
Sega/Sammy has an obligation to its stockholders to make a profit. The only reason Sonic has been alive for as long as it has been is because he's Sega's mascot, and brand recognition is everything. To make a console, they'd have to convince their share holders that it's in the company's best interest to make a console. Shareholders that think that consoles are a dying industry and mobile games are the future, I might add.
If anything, they are more likely to liquidate their game development section and switch to Pachinkos full time than they are to go back to console development.
Atlus is a cash cow and Sega is more relevant now than in a long time with that Console War movie and the new Sonic movie coming. They'd be stupid to sell now after rolling with the punches this long.
