>a playable, modern PC build of Sonic Xtreme has been released.
>no threads on /v/
What the fuck /v/.
It's pretty damn cool. No Fish-eye effect yet though.
>getting excited about this at all
its like sonicfags legitimately enjoy playing awful games
Thanks anon, giving it a try
Where did this come from?
You don't have to like Sonic to think this looks remotely interesting.
You had to register to get the link, so I just posted the link to save time.
I don't really know the appeal of the fisheye lens but I really wish games were a little more abstract like this. I feel like it's something that was sort of around while the saturn was alive but never went anywhere and was never returned to.
Though I guess Mario Galaxy is sorta close.
This is neat, but I'm not downloading it until the fish lens effect gets incorporated. I want to be able to experience it for the first time as it was meant to be.
Plus the fact that my internet is slow as molasses right now so I can't really download anything.
This demo doesn't come off as particularly good.
It's obviously an unfinished product and the lack of the original camera kills a lot of the presentation but I can see why Sega had little faith in it.
We were all waiting on you to make it.
WHAT REALLY SINCE WHEN
SHIT COMPLETELY FORGOT IT SHIT FUCKING THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME OP
>Those roller coaster like lines where you go as a ball along with fish eye lens
Holy shit I love these physics. If you go in gravity fuckup spin dash, stick to a wall, stand up and jump, you'll fall to the right all the way to the end of the level.
Plays like Super Mario Galaxy
i think its just a shitty design in general i dunno why anyone would to make/remake it and ive played the unfinished bossfight mode for extreme which seems a little more interesting honestly
Nigga I'm not downloading anything linked on /v/.
That said if this is legit then that's cool. I heard about this a while ago but just wrote it off as one of those things that would never actually come out.
its more that there are various builds. the one released is one that was featured in a commercial, it didn't have the fisheye yet. that was a later build.
he said there were more builds to come, so there will likesly be one or two of the other ones with the fish eye released.
Im more curious bout that failed boss engine
What are you a faggot? Why wouldn't you be interested in a prototype of an unreleased game from a popular franchise? Not only do you get to play and see what it could have been like but, if you are more tech savvy, you can start ripping apart the game to see what hidden resources it contains. That is really fun to do in prototypes because nothing is cleaned up yet so more stuff is left behind.
I do wonder how well this game would have done if it was released. Perhaps the fate of Sega would have been different. Or maybe not.
It looked like shit when it was first revealed and it still looks like shit today.
The only reason anyone holds interest on this is because of the behind the scenes drama over its development.
>Perhaps the fate of Sega would have been different.
You're an idiot if you think a single Sonic game would have turned them around.
Their fate was sealed the moment they pissed off Tom Kalinske.
There is no music in the build.
Chris Senn released the conceptual soundtrack he made during development (and some songs he made after in 2006) years ago.
None of these songs would've made it into the game, since Howard Drossin was supposed to compose X-treme.
From what we see of the later builds, they partially ditched that gravity mechanic.
I mean on paper it sounds cool, but trying to design complex levels around it- SONIC levels- would have been a nightmare.
Instead they just included the fisheye, and went with regular 3D levels, but with a lot of loops and shit so you could have that cool roller coaster feel.
there was also that other early Nights" version with Jade Gully, which is like, just a large open map.
Gonna dump some good ol' magazine scans.
Honestly, it would have tided people over. One of the main problems with the Saturn was a lack of games, let alone a Sonic title. This would have calmed that itch down. This is how bad the Saturn was in America. So bad, it pretty much sealed SEGA's fate and killed any hope for the Dreamcast to live a long life.
It wouldn't have aged well, but for the time, it would do.
There's a fangame that tries to recreate x-treme that uses the gravity mechanic well enough.
I still think the fisheye might be brilliant for sonic since it lets you look far ahead.
well the fish eye was used for that purpose. to give you better view of your surroundings.
Then Galaxy happened and just made the stages small planets, and Sonic Lost World did a similar thing.
I still refuse to believe Lost World wasnt in some way influenced by the mystery surrounding "what could have been" Sonic Xtreme
Want to see some X-treme concept art and shit?
well, it suffered from an immense amount of problems while developing it
yuji naka getting butthurt about them using the nights engine without his permission
lead programmer working himself to death
sega of america/japan being mean to eachother
shit that would never fly int today's Games journalism.
I miss 90's game journalism.
I miss gaming magazines in general. they fetl more legit than just some guy literally blogging.
>That Game Over
Still unsettling as fuck.
There's no reason Sonic can't work in 3D. Just because Sonic Team are a bunch of incompetent hacks who can't make a proper 3D platformer for their life doesn't mean an excellent 3D Sonic can't be done. I still don't know how those people managed to make PSO.
Did I just eat a pound of crack before watching that video?
For the builds that have been recovered, has it been made known how far into development the game was? I would be surprised if there was a build that could be played to the end.
not very, since they had to fucking start over like 5 times.
Especially when Yuji Naka got shown the wrong prototype, and left before they could show him the right one. he demanded they start over AGAIN on the boss engine.
Thats when shit hit the fan and everything died
