Is this the darkest video game of all time? I can't imagine it getting much darker than an AI we created destroying all life on Earth with the exception of 5 individuals who he chooses to imprison, torture, mutilate and put into simulations specifically tailored to their personal deepest fears and weaknesses
Nah, pretty sure it's Doom 3.
One of them, there's quite a few that could take that title
Really creepy/immersive old-ass PC adventure game based on a sci-fi-apocalyptic short story of the same name which is also a really quick and interesting read: I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. The devs of the game actually got the story's writer to do the script for the game so it's pretty awesome
And a whole chapter devoted to the holocaust, another to rape, another to cannibalism, yea, I don't know any that is worse. Especially because it is very individual and personal, and realistic. Plenty of stories and games include very grotesque things, but always at an impersonal distance.
My point is that the story is far more darker. The game is just a watered down version, even having a good ending where humanity is saved.
You can't save the girl in Witch's House.
The idea of being locked in your own body is already scary enough, let alone as the last alive "human" on the planet, permanently being tortured by someone that hates you and has the ability to keep you alive. Scariest thing imaginable.
Harlan Ellison's actually fucking based, but yeah, he went the full mile and did the audiobook and voiced AM in the game.
He's a pretty amazing voice actor, shame he never pursued a career in that.
Remember that time he canonically Pucci'd the Scooby Doo universe?
>You can't save the girl in Witch's House.
But the overall themes in IHNMAIMS are way darker, dude. The Witch's House only has a little twist that is a bit sad, but that's it.
I Have No Mouth is a game that came out of the mind of a person who grew up in the generations right after the second world war ended, and the amount of heinous shit we've done in the Twentieth century broke a lot of people.
You cannot possibly imply that a
sick girl who tricks her friend into switching bodies and never reverses the deal is more depressing than a game that touches on rape, narcissism, holocaust, nuclear war, and the scary as fuck implications of how a human mind would react to being made immortal and live forever in what's essentially a cage.
Sanitarium gets pretty dark, but yeah I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream probably takes the cake.
I was able to play through IHNMAIMS without feeling uncomfortable.
Can't say the same for this.
I wish he came here for some inspiration or something.
>implying he'd use the Internet ever
Ellison's a technophobe. He doesn't even own a computer. He writes everything with a typewriter, saying if it was good enough for Mark Twain it's good enough for him.
>That CN Scooby-Doo movie
>Every time Scooby put on an disguise, his digitigrade hind legs turn into human legs
Kept bothering me throughout the whole damn film.
Does this look gay to you?
>There are plenty of anecdotes of him being an all-around douche to everyone he meets.
Only until he warms up to them. He's an old-world kind of guy and a nihilst on top of it. Cut him some slack.
it's pretty goddamn funny sometimes, but it feels appropriately bleak to me.
>title is "Lisa: The Painful RPG
>advertised on Steam as a "mature Earthbound"
>look at all this blood and severed limbs!
>main aplettes revolve around red and black
>in any way not edgy
Certainly not the bleakest, and pretty upbeat in a lot of places. But by the end of the game, the best you can hope for is that Earth might heal the damage and support life again one day in the future.
Also, if you let Dan die, Iji has a mental breakdown and pretends he's still alive
I want more.
>new Berserk game is released
>it's a boat simulator with Gone Home storytelling elements
>objective worst Part is Phantom Blood
>"nah man I quit before it got anywhere that could be considered 'not shit'"
Animeonlyfags have shit taste.
The story's fucked up
>AM let them all fuck the girl and eventually she just gave up and accepted it
>the protagonist guy is in love with her but she's so stretched out she can only feel pleasure from the hot monkey dick
The setting of Kult is kinda supposed to be like in mind of a severe paranoid schizophrenic person except the insanity is reality and the real world is a fabrication.
The victory condition is assuming your true form that is some kind of cosmic horror and becoming so out of touch with the life you thought you had that you stop being you.
Game is a massive pile of shit. I sat through a whole LP of it and it's definitely that extremely shitty kind of adventure game where the wrong choice ends with you losing.
Frankly I don't think it's hard to make something "dark", especially if you approach it like Ellison and just stockpile a whole bunch of edgy tragic shit into your character's life.
Sanitarium is so goofy though. I could never take it seriously as this dark horror adventure game people kept telling me it was. To me it was like a black comedy story, like Harvester, only much, much more tame.
Great game though, and definitely a classic.
Oh yeah, just like how The Price is Right is vidya, because is has a video game. Yeah, totally. You're right. No, no, no. Totally. You are 1000 dollar correct.
Let's all go and make a The Price is Right thread right now, because it has a video game.
The Price Is Right is /tg/, though.
I hope you get banned for shitposting.
Kill yourself, you piece of shit. I hope you get hit by a bus tomorrow.
So is Persona 4. Should we stop having daily stay fucking jelly threads?
For some reason, the creepiest game I played was that free dream exploration japanese PC game. Forgot the name. It had a really nice atmosphere. But it wasn't actually all that dark.
I have no mouth certainly does have darker themes. I played it for the first time last year and I absolutely loved it. But it's not building much of an atmosphere.
I'm looking for help finding a game I played briefly as a kid. It was a PC adventure game, around the time King's Quest V came out I believe, where you were working with a time limit. I think you were a private investigator, your girlfriend was captured, being tortured, and soon getting killed. I think. I'm certain there was a torture chamber, at the very least. Modern setting, or maybe futuristic, I don't fucking know. I'm being hella vague because I was a kid when I played this, I'm sure someone could jog my memory.
What's interesting about this game is actually handles the rape subject really well. Like, you never hear SJWs running to ban this game because the OVERT rape story compared to the subtle messages in newer games.
Yes, Yume Nikki, exactly. I don't know if I actually got anywhere in this. It barely felt like a game, just something you wandered around in late at night, in bed, on your laptop, when you were tired as fuck and about to fall asleep.
I think the game would have been extremely boring had I played it while fully awake with a cup of coffee in front of me.
That said, the whole MegaTen series is based on a shitty light novel, so there's that.
I barely even remembered the rape story. Yeah, that elevator scene was pretty good. And I like how they worked her "trigger" into gameplay. It was very interesting to have a character refuse to do certain things for reasons you don't even immediately understand, and just having to work with those limitations with no explanations given.
It has some heavy themes, but there's more to dark feelings than just death. Hell, the perpspective MM puts death in reminds me of how it's just a part of life.
That said, replaying it now I forgot just how dark some of the humor was.
>Mikau collapsing, giving his final testament in his dying breath
>pulls out a guitar and starts singing
I'd expect a joke like that in FMA, but not in Zelda. Then again, the series has always had a twisted sense of humor, so it's not like it's out of place.
Wait, this is the same game that had some black woman cry about elevators and she goes into like a museum to find her way out, and goes into a mummy tomb for the door or some shit? That game looked terrible and the voice actor was shit.
>bringing up furshit out of nowhere
>tfw you found most of the effect without a guide
Man i spent so much time on this game.
I can see how it may not appeal to most of the people though, what really kept me playing is the excitement to find something new.
The uboa switch is kinda bullshit though( 1.5% chance to see him on the first time).
People who found him without knowing about him probably shitted their lives though.
Romani gets attacked by ayy lmaos, and then gets mindbroken if she gets kidnapped, and Cremia gets assaulted by highwaymen. On the third day Cremia gets Romani drunk so that she dies painlessly.
Not that that makes it exceptionally "dark."
>and then gets mindbroken if she gets kidnapped
what makes you think that
man that part was the one i played the hardest to not lose
those ayylmaos scared the shit out of me but I tried really hard to not let them get romani
On the last night of the older sister gets her younger sister shit faced so she doesn't know whats going on as the world ends under the guise of 'hey you're going to be an adult soon, so lets do something adult while we still have the chance', and then she crawls into bed with her, holds her tight and waits to die.
I don't know about you, but to me that's just really sad
>what makes you think that
If you go to the ranch on the third day without having helped her earlier, she'll have a vacant look on her face and won't say anything if you talk to her.
if i remember right romani disappears and cremia gets depressed but only if you fail. romani isn't kidnapped by the ayylmaos if you don't show up in the ranch. for me, she doesnt say anything because she's sad, thats it.
>"Hey guys, look how edgy our game is!"
>"It's true! It's really edgy!"
>I don't know, I don't like edgy
>"It's not edgy jackass, why would you even think that?"
plus if you let her get kidnapped and show up in the third day she's still missing. the fact she's still there if you don't help her it means she didn't even go out and thus wasn't kidnapped.
Everyone here is wrong. Darkest video game of all time coming through.
If honestly believe something is the deepest thing of all time, that means you are uneducated, and thus would not know any work that is actually deep, so the thing you are talking about is, in fact, not deep.
If you fail the invasion on purpose but return to the ranch on the 2nd day you can find her wandering about listlessly. I think she walks about in the southwest part of the ranch, the bit that's the emptiest. Can't remember her dialogue (if she speaks at all)
My argument is refuted. It's evident by three things.
1. Dat strawman.
2. unwillingness to listen and think logically.
3. Mango image, edited no less.
Hostility sure does show superiority, especially on a discussion board about video games.
Not as dark as HNMS but did make me feel uncomfortable leaving people to die just to save water.
i will keep dying forever then and not ask for the cat's help in the beginning. i think that if you don't, he doesn't show up later on. what now faggot
that's the true way to win.
You could say that in terms of "how badly the protagonist is fucked" picrelated also counts, since both the premise and ending are all about Chakan being tricked by Death thrice since
the eternal life which he in the first place won from duel with Death is living hell, he would never stop feeling the pain of innocent and weak until all of the evil perishes, but as he cleansed the world of all evil Death just laughs at his claims for his rest from eternal suffering, since when Death said "until all evil is perished you will never know peace" didn't mean just Earth, it meant that all of those infinite stars which Chakan's eyes perceive in the sky are filled with evil, and until the day that he finds his way from Earth to continue his eternal quest he will just wait in pain.
I just followed the comment trail and it was more like
>"I want to play LISA but it looks edgy and humorless"
>"it's really not edgy and has black humor"
>"marketing makes it look edgy"
>"but it's not, that's strawman"
>"but the marketing makes it look edgy"
welp, whatever helps you sleep at night
>I set my sail
>Fly the wind it will take me
>I'm coming home, sweet home
>Ride on my back
>Clouds are makin way for me
>I'm coming home, sweet home
If that bastard thought he was getting a free pass just because I'm a nice guy, well,
he got what he was expecting.
>not already being familiar with a sci-fi classic like IHNMIMS
I'm getting too old for this place.
I think the best thing about Bastion is how it ends at just the right time in just the right way. You don't feel like it dragged on, nor do you feel like you wanted more: the conclusion is satisfying. You're left with the distinct impression that you just played a really great vidya, even if the game itself wasn't as revolutionary as some critics make it out to be.
Proper pacing in vidya is a lost art, I guess.
I'm so sick of this game.
I've played through it 3 times myself. Twice normal, one pain mode.
Then on valentines day my grill basically begged me to play it for 12 hours straight. We only stopped because I put my foot down and wanted to get some fucking sleep.
Then when we woke up I played it for another 5 hours until we finished it.
I love the games humor, its really not edgy compared to any sonic fan-fiction or anything else really. Its just a lot of dark humour.
Also the soundtrack is fucking great.
Yume Nikki's kind of like a surrealistic sandbox exploration
it's a strange experience, mind-numbing at times. I didn't like it when I started out with it either.
I began to find the combination of the visual and auditory design really impressive for how much it's able to achieve with so little
The weird thing with Yume Nikki is it's about 80% aimless wandering until the point where your eyes are ready to gloss over.
Combined with the droning ambience and repetitive backgrounds it can feel like you're drifting between waking and dreaming yourself
I'm not sure if it's that way by design or not, but if it was
it's a pretty brilliant one-of-a-kind experience for something some guy was able to make in RPG Maker
>he marketing actually being edgy doesn't change that the marketing isn't edgy
Is that Spike on the pic?
In recent memory, we had Lone Survivor that was pretty damn good, and very dark. I'm not crazy about it but I still think it was a great game.
Well shit, I remember these, didn't bother playing though.
OT: I just started playing Saya no Uta. How fucked am I?
real is no one going to post it
Actually, in Arcanum if you side with the villain, you can break him out of the pocket dimension he's stuck in and lay waste to the world together. No one remains alive, none of your friends or allies, only you two. Then he turns on you but you manage to kill him, barely.
The epilogue tells the story that you are sitting on top of a now dead and empty world, surrounded by the skeletons of everyone and everything you slaughtered, and how you are the last remaining living thing, and you are quietly awaiting for your own death so you may join the others in the great silence.
i'd say this is pretty dark. it looks like the "bad" ending, but if you pay close attention it is actually the good one.
>want to get revenge on your bullies
>try to summon demons, thinking it's just a game
>get trapped in hell to relive horrible deaths in eternity
She just can't seem to catch a break.
These are the kind of endings that makes me
A lot of stuff in harvester is seriously messed up. Edna, mother and children in the Lodge, some of the dialogue in town. The ending was pretty tame, compared to that.
Maybe it's not the darkest of games but Saya comes to mind.
What's that one SNES RPG where your parents are experimented on, Frankenstein style, by some scientist and you end up fighting them as bosses or something? I really wish I could remember the game.
I really fucking liked the short story, and I hear the game expands on it really well.
That being said I could never get past the gameplay, it just hasn't aged very well.
Is it worth forcing my way through?
I wanted to say Nocturne, but then I realized there isn't even any rape in that game
You know, it was nice the game had a "good" ending. But AM was really fucked up. Also nice they expanded the personality of certain characters.
>you'll never be tortured for over a 100 years by a rogue computer
Kid-killing is less subtle edgy
Having your childhood friend brutally have his face smashed in in front of you only to have him turn into a giant slug
including his hat, lelis more in your face
Plus it showed the apocalypse more directly than other SMT games
