Dark Souls also has better boss fights, a semi open metroidvania world that is more compelling than a broken up one in Demon's Souls, more items to use (weapons and especially armour) and a community that is lively even today.

DeS had MUCH better level design, more interesting boss design and had genuine difficulty. Even going back and playing it now, shit's tense and taking damage matters, you don't have Estus as a get out of jail free card.
DaS had better PvP and overall refined mechanics.
It's debatable which one had better atmosphere and lightning, but I lean towards DeS.
Demon's Souls had it's own flaws but I liked what it did right more compared to Dark Souls. Out of all the souls games combat, I like Demon's souls' the most. It's the fastest of them all. PVP itself is the most broken though but that's because exploits were never patched. I like the upgrade paths the most in Demon's Souls too, everything actually felt usable depending on your build. That said, actually upgrading your weapons was a pain. Though I kinda like it that way since you have to commit to what build your striving for even more but I can see why some people find it tedious. Oh and I just like Demon's Souls' aesthetics more. The armors in the game look nice and fancy while in the Dark games, they look like they've been out in the elements and beaten to hell for years. Though it's obvious Dark armors have actually gone through all that so it's justified at least. I just prefer to look snazzy. Speaking of armor though, kudos to Dark Souls(the first one anyway) in making armor useful.
Anyone invading/gravelording in DaS' Anal Rodeo right now? I've been gravelorded like three times today, I'm assuming by the same person. I've been invaded a lot too, yet I can't seem to invade anyone.

The Capra and Taurus Demon boss fights were larger, anyway. The ones in Demon Ruins are Minor demons. It's just a neat way for a player to show progress. "Remember that boss you fought a while ago? Well now you can kill five of them!"

I don't think one was specifically better than the other in any particular way, I just think it's easier to latch onto the first one because it wasn't so popular. By the time Dark Souls was on the way they had already started the "IT'S SUPER HARD, PREPARE TO DIE!" marketing campaign that totally misses the entire point of the game. The game itself isn't THAT hard, it just makes you master the mechanics of the game. I think harsh is a better term.
Then the sequel went full retard by embracing the marketing department, actually being unfairly difficult at multiple points, putting a global death counter IN the game, etc.
Demon's Souls was good but it had its fair share of problems. PvP especially, a fight with an invader could go on for what felt like fucking hours.
