The one with Chie. Persona 2 I think.
>SMT 1 and 2 wil never gets a remake(That shit port for IOS dont count).
>No Nocturne with fully voiced(USA/JAP option to switch) or at least for portables
>No SMT Arena featuring all MC form Megatens
For me it's Nocturne. Intelligent, nihilistic and with a wicked sense of humour.
Either SJ or Nocturne.
>wanting Nocturne voiced
No thank you, but I would like a remake where Dante gets pierce, or we get the version with Raidou.
I love the SMT series and all its spin-offs, but I'd like to see if there are other games where they take a fuck-ton of myths and legends and use them in a similar way.
Doesn't have to be dungeon crawler, either.
Strange Journey because i love Dungeon Crawlers.
I do not comprehend how it got low scores in reviewing sites while Persona 4 got a 9.
They were the first SMT games that I played and I thought they were fine, the difficulty is really easy too compared to later games since they still have easy exploits like zio instalock and magic bullets making everything ez mode
Personal Opinions coming through
Haven't played SJ, or really many other games besides P3 and 4.
Keep in mind before you attack me that even I, which is the lowest, was fucking awesome, just mechanically the most annoying to me at times.
>mfw can't figure out how to get through the kalpas
>Giving your Candelbrum to Lucy
Might as well say "Easily Manipulated" on your forehead.
4 > Devil Survivor > 2 > 1 > SMT spinoffs > Persona 3 > everything else.
Yeah I just finished SMT II, so now I think I'll go through DDS 1 and 2 and finish Press Turn games.
So I generally suck at dungeon crawlers but I though SMT 1 and 2 were pretty easy if you just spammed zio skills. If that wasn't in it though I would have thought they were pretty hard. Is SJ pretty hard? Or is it Nocturne levels of manageable in regards to normal jrpgs?
>implying 4 wasn't pokimanz on hyper-steroids in 3D
You fuckers told me Persona 2 was bad
You fuckers were wrong
>"Strange Journey is better than Nocturne"
Strange Journey and fuck all you Personage casuals who would say otherwise.
I don't see why you'd say that, it's only marginally more confusing than the typical PUSH BUTAN DO ATTAK rpg. It basically lets you autobattle through the game if you're not retarded.
P1 is great to ya nigger
I'm not that guy, but ignoring the faggotry that was your writing, 4 is as much demon pokemon as any other SMT game.
That being said, I liked 4. It was an overall solid experience with a few questionable design decisions.
The only people I've heard say that P2 is bad are people who love Persona 3 and 4
I fucking hate Chaos just because of how much Tokyo Dreamland sucked, Chaos faggot stealing your demon, and the complete darkness maze on one of the floors to kill Asura pissed me off in SMT1
That was a terrible route
Was Lucifer too retarded to realize that no one would be dressed in a ditzy school uniform during an apocalypse, or did he want to be mysterious?
>Gameplay is the most important aspect of any game, except when my favorite games have terrible gameplay, then story's more important.
Fuck stats and power, i always go for the perfect harem team.
Literally just dumbed down Devil Summoner without rows and with the alignment gimmick
Have you seen his other incarnations?
At least with Hikaru he didn't make the name blatantly obvious to english speakers.
No idea if it means something in nipponese
I wish Dante turned into that in Nocturne. That'd be baller
I can tell you're already trying to force this shit. Let me just post real best girl and you can go.
Uh oh, i'm making someone upset.
Wasn't my intention, but it sure as fuck is now, thanks.
I like Suave Lucy, followed by Louisa
Best of classic megaten gameplay, best negotiation dialogues, best girls.
I know /v/ hates this shit, but I wish today's SMT games had the demon pop culture references.
Old man Lucy has the hottest assistant.
Yeah I knew Lucifer meant Morning Star, just had no idea what Hikaru meant.
Fun fact about the name Lucifer is that it wasn't ever ascribed to the fallen angel as a name until centuries after the bible was first compiled. The very first reference to the word Lucifer is as an adjective to describe a Babylonian king
It's rough around the edges design-wise, but I think it's got one of my favorite scenarios and settings, despite me only knowing the gist of the story. It's also got those sweet 1996 Devil Summoner designs. Nicely unified art style which we'll never see another SMT game with that much art style effort in it.
>Hacker is shit.
What the fuck m8
She can be a real lifesaver against those stupid chatterskulls that hang around ginza and the ginza underpass
hama isn't effected by the sukunda they spam and it avoids you accidently only doing 90% of their health and having MC get blown the fuck up by last resort
That's one of the things I really like about nocturne, while it doesn't have the 1000 demons of the other mainline games none of the demons feel like they're useless or generic fodder
Say what you want about SMTIV but I think it has the best overall soundtrack
>best negotiation dialogue
This is the objective best overall SMT game
>this hardass motherfucker will never come back to save us from the filthy chaosFAGS ever again
>Say what you want about SMTIV but I think it has the best overall soundtrack
It is also the
best game in the series, unequivocally
>people complaining about the PS2 models being "outdated" and "overused"
I'm fairly convinced they're only going to slap on new textures in P5 to match the artstyle
Peopel don't say persona 2 has bad gameplay because it's confusing or too hard
it's because it's NOT hard, just that because of the high random encounter rates, high health but low damage enemies and lengthy loading times everything takes forever
I don't think people on this site would hate something like that since it's demon's just referencing famous demons and their portrayal.
Never seen Beetlejuice?
There's also Christine the car.
Nah, the PS2 models are hardly timeless.
Why didn't you pick the best girl, /v/?
Is it because you hate
strong, sweaty, athletic thighs?
I really liked the game, and I have defended it a lot, but that's just wrong. The best game in the series can't be one with as many poor design decisions and glaring flaws that IV has.
I was able to have fun despite the decisions, whereas for a lot of SMT games, I was able to have fun because of it's decisions
Smirking, lack of vit, and only having 2 or so memorable dungeons in the game really hurt it's overall enjoyment.
How do you make demon negotations better /v/? Because as it stands it sucks ass in Nocturne and IV.
Well, then I can see where your confusion lies.
Honestly thanks to that movie I thought that was the proper spelling of the word for the longest time.
Only much later did I find out that the star system, and the demon were named Betelgeuse.
>tfw I had to evolve Angel into this ugly motherfucker
Nocturne negotiations are only bad if you only use the basic talk command
they get a lot more interesting as you work in the demon talk skills, it's actually one of my favorites in the series
best in the series is raidou 2, which has a combination of classic SMT negotations with nocturne conversation skills, more games like that please
making it like SJ is the absolute last thing that should happen, fuck RNG demon responses forever and all time, in nocturne the questions each demon asks you always have the same answer and you have skills like detain that let you avoid them running with your money while in SJ you can literally savestate before picking something and get wildly different responses each time
That lame nigga probably gave up at Bootes
Soul Hackers just got overhyped before launch so it fell flat for some people who had higher expectations. SH fans are infinitely more tolerable than the Strange Circlejerk at least.
The White were so damn right. Easily the most satisfying and conclusive ending in SMTIV. God the Law, Chaos, and Neutral ends were shitty.
>at something that is completely luck based
It's basically killer7 but with awkward melee combat instead of awkward gunplay
It's a really interesting game, and the ways it's both super linear yet quite open ended are cool but it's also sort of a janky piece of shit, and the dub has really bad voice acting (with the single exception of the MC) and some censorship/translation issues
dreamcast is the only version worth playing though, makken shao doesn't add anything
this is a better way of putting it, frankly
enjoy, you have plenty of SMT ahead and behind of you
>mfw the law ending is basically just the shitty white ending.
I was so pissed. Especially since I wanted to go chaos but by the time I changed my mind I was too far from it. I even went with Walter and fought Yamato but that wasn't enough. Doing a second play through on master going for neutral this time.
Nothing can top how shitty and generic Nocturne's endings are. SJ Law and Chaos were also pretty shit, they had all the negatives and no positives of their respective alignment.
Thats what I'm afraid of too. Nocturne is fun but it's such a chore to play sometimes. I'm in that upside down prison right now and it annoys me so much
however I feel like if I just push myself to finish it I'd enjoy it less than I should, and in case DDS isn't as good as I want it to be I might get super disappointed
I think I'll download it now and check it out for an hour or two, then decide what I want to do next
I probably wouldn't have minded the Neutral end as much if not for the sheer fucking tedium of actually doing all the boring fucking quests to get it. It was just way too much effort for what I thought was a mediocre payoff especially after it's already confirmed multiple times that the cycles will always continue.
Yeah, that was legitimately shitty man. I'm not really even much of a Law person myself (Law is only my favorite end in SMT II), but they got supremely shafted in SMT IV and not only looked like the shittiest faction but also got the shittiest end.
When I see he did nothing wrong anymore all I can think of anymore is shitty micchy who did nothing right
IV's Law ending was relatively good compared to how awful they usually get, SJ Law is worse in every way, I Law is kind of shit considering how God is directly responsible for so much bad shit in that game, and I never understood why people like II Law, Chaos is an outright heroic good faction compared to them in II
That guy and Minotaur are always guaranteed replies
Its combat and control system is similar to Metroid Prime's. The game is really cool though with branching paths and multiple endings. Oh, and you get to take over certain enemies bodies and they all have different abilities.
Honestly for me the only time I finished a game int he series and thought "Wow, that was really cool and satisfying" was the Law end of SMT2
Also I think a big problem with 4 was that Kaneko wrote the original draft for the plot years ago, then a team of writers descended upon it and made it more whole to go with the gameplay.
That being said Gameplay>Story
I love this guy too, shame that he's NG+ only so plenty of players never even found him.
I just liked that in II people were free to live in harmony for thousands of years of peace without being subjected to any sort of brainwashing and without any angelic interference from that point on. Of course Aleph then proceeds to get fucked for the rest of eternity, but yeah.
Oh yeah, and play the Japanese Dreamcast version if you can. The swastika enemies and
Pope bossare censored in all other versions.
Man, I'm still hoping some of its designs end up in the SMT/Persona series for at least a cameo or two. Some of Kazuma Kaneko's best work deserves to be re-used.
In SJ, I pretty much knew what to expect from Law when I saw the marines getting brainwashed. I went chaos and felt like I was tricked when Juminez brought the parasite things in. That's not free dumb.
SMT2 had the best endings.
He said he wanted to leave at the end of the Nocturne documentary anon, let him be with the flowers. If he wants to come back, he'll come back.
We know he's still at Atlus at least
Why isn't there an SMT WAD for Doom?
Here's hoping he's working on a brilliant game project we just don't know about yet.
What are you on about mate? Desperate Hit shits all over everything.
rip you beautiful man you
But that build is plenty fine.
The moment you get Luster Candy/Debilitate/Mediaharan on any demon, combined with any of the MP recover apps, means you literally can't die anyway, and shit like Grand Tack will always be powerful enough.
The game isn't hard and it doesn't have a boss like Lucy in Nocturne where you NEED pierce to be effective.
Yeah honestly he's great. I didn't hate all of the designs, but Astaroth and the Minotaur are the only two I actively liked really
My favorite SMT is SMT I, though. I don't give a shit about all the infighting.
>Finally able to fuse Matador
I've tried several of these games, and they are just not my cup of tea. Can't get into them at all.
But goddamn, that art.
These designs are killer.
Ignoring that you're fighting against demons, not just summoning them against pringles men and da vinci tanks.
Not souping up the models would be stupid if they have that much focus.
I hope they include a 3D gallery of Demon designs.
One of the best things about strange journey is the neutral ending. Its one of the best endings to an smt game period.
Also did anyone beat the Lucifer boss in devil survivor 1? That fucker owns me every god damn time.
I know, I've heard the legends
why though? Because of meditation? Isn't it just Life Drain?
Pic related has it too, fucking great party member
>tfw your favorite demon is only good in Imagine
It's not saying a lot because as long as the demon scales well and have damage/healing and utility (Cooldown, cast time, etc) traits they can be good for endgame
I love when this shit happens.
Meditation is an almighty skill that saps both life and magic. So he will literally never run out of MP.
Combine that with the fact that he gets Prayer and Preach means you can cause status ailments and heal your party fully and heal all status ailments forever as long as you keep getting MP back with Meditation.
Life drain drains both life and magic too
but in combination with what you describe, yeah that sounds OP as fuck
Though I have to fuse him properly for him to become OP, right?
>implying you wouldn't
I also love DeSU:OC, but more so because the character is "edgy", but because your choices actually define the personality your character takes on. You can be edgy, you can be saintly, you can be rational/nationalist, you can be a traditionalist/puritan, and you can even be an idiotic coward depending on the path you choose.
Though, personally, I also prefer the "edgy" version, specifically, the pro-human edgy guy. Though, preferably, a combination of Atsuro's and Cain's ending would be my preferred
I wouldn't be shocked if he's working behind the scenes on P5 to ensure the demons are all modeled accurately, especially since Hashino pointed out making all the new Persona models in HD is a grueling process for them
wish these guys weren't censored in the US version ;_;
If you fuse him properly he can become better than he already is, but he learns Meditation, Preach, and Prayer all on his own.
I took mine to endgame with just those skills and Rakunda and Sukunda and Tarunda to make him a debuff machine that would full heal my party when needed and deal out status effects in random encounters.
So no, you really don't.
>tfw your favorite demon was not in IV
Fucking bullshit. They used the shitty Thor design too.
It is a good show
>tfw adde was right
Literally all you need to do is make sure he has some healing spells and you're good to go
prayer + his resistances + heal spells means you can literally keep him for like 80% of the game without feeling like he's dead weight
>The long and painful Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey ends here
I know they ditched a lot of the Nocturne designs mostly because they were simple for the 3d leap and pretty overused, but that's what made them nice. They were simple and stylistic. Thor being the best example
Also they seemed to have forgotten the whole "handsome man" part of Oberon. Just why?
If I didn't like Soul Hackers very much, would I like this?
Everything I've seen and read about it is fascinating.
Played Nocturne, SJ, SH and SMTIV so far.
Still pissed they reverted to her shitty generic design in IV.
I love SMT threads on /v/ very rarely will there be shitposting. I am amazed how good SMT I and SMT II ost is for a Snes game.
Anybody here hoping for a game in the series where you can interact and even socialize further with the demons?
I wanna Social Link a Lilim if you know what I mean...
>The 64th spirit of the Goetia. He is a great duke and appears at first as a mighty terrible and strong leopard but at the command of his summoner he assumes the shape of a man with fiery eyes and a terrible countenance. He can see the past and future, but unless he is commanded into a triangle he will lie in all those things. He will gladly talk of divinity and of the creation of the world, and of his and other spirits' falls from grace. He can control fire and burn all of his and his summoner's adversaries to death and will not suffer them to be tempted by any spirit or otherwise. He governs 36 legions of spirits.
I fucking love his redesign. It's a shame that he wasn't in IV though they'd probably would give him his cheetah diaper one.
I hope personas give you side quests and shit like that in P5. You have no idea how happy I am now that demon designs are back.
Meguro and Hashino have been with Atlus since SMT If... with Soejima joining shortly afterwards to work on P1
>not enjoying both for what they are
come on, you already got over the smt vs persona stigma...
I'm one of those people who would flip out if someone said P4 had better story than 3
Too bad he's such a terrible demon in all the games he's in. Literal fusion fodder
To a Persona 3 fan perhaps.
I wouldn't rank any of the Personas as my favorite in the series, but P4 was a much better experience than P3, which kind of felt like "what if Nomura made a Megami Tensei" at times. P4 might not be as "dark", but it's also not as childish. That said, good game.
I think you'll find that most SMT fans have no problem with people like Persona.
I just personally couldn't stand most of P4, but I won't hold it against someone for liking it. I just liked P3 a lot more than P4.
I felt 4 did everything 3 did, just worse in terms of story, atmosphere, and all those aesthetic type things.
SMT as a whole is still better than either though for me.
I never understood this 'SMT is dead now meme'. Since P4 came out, we got two new mainline games, two DeSu games and expanded rereleases, the first English release of SH, SMT x FE could still be alive, and we know the Maniax Team is working on a new game. That's not even counting all the ports
Shit, I didn't pay attention and realize it's been that long. Even still, the SMT series has some shaky-ass release time frames.
We'll be lucky to get an SMT5 within a decade.
unless you have concrete numbers I doubt it. IV and Nocturne both got to about 250k in Japan a month after launch and slowed down. Nocturne did 60k in 5 years in the US, whereas IV did 100k in 5 months. Only counting physical copies for all numbers
Where's your source?
And by that logic you're comparing years of sales and re-releases with a game that is current and has not been re-released whatsoever.
Nocturne had two launches, the first of which was pretty awful because the game was pretty rough. The maniax version added a lot to the game.
SMT IV has sold a little over half a million last I checked, which was about 200,000 more units than Nocturne had sold at that point.
I don't understand the negativity either. Atlus has been pretty damn busy in the past 5 years. People act like they had some golden age during the PS2 and then stopped all production.
So how terribly has Ratio aged?
I think the concept sounds great and the screenshots I've seen look really stylish, but I've also heard that the first game is a chore to play and only really starts taking off in the second game
Quick! you can choose any Kaneko design to be fully modeled in P5 as a NG+ boss, regardless of how old or obscure it is. What do you choose?
Hard mode: No Mara, she's token.
MANIAC MODE: No Frost Jack variants
First is playable, gameplay isn't mindblowing but it isn't bad. Just a little stale.
But aesthetically it's great and the story is cool. And then 2 kinda flips around on that, making gameplay better and story worse.
>People act like they had some golden age during the PS2 and then stopped all production.
Is it that hard to figure out? They've moved production mostly to handhelds, as opposed to consoles which is what most people wanted.
I do understand that handhelds are far cheaper to develop for though, like the PS2 etc.
The atmosphere is great, characters are great, story is great, music is great but the combat is complete ass. It's not unplayable but it's a bit tedious. Second game's story is a bit retarded but the gameplay is much better. Worth a try if you liked other megaten games.
Narumi a best
The way I see it, so far the only HD game they've made is Catherine. And that was after years of the PS3 being out.
They've just been afraid to tackle HD. They're a relatively small studio that wants to keep dev costs down and so they're trying to avoid going the Ubisoft route of inflating dev costs sky high by avoiding HD until they're ready. I think after P5 they'll be more acclimated to the dev environment and be able to put more things on consoles again.
I personally don't care since their games have been quality the entire time
Atlus has never been big, their only HD game had a much smaller scale compared to their RPGs. Even with all the demons being made in P5 and it taking place in Tokyo so that could have reusable assets, I'm a bit wary of there being a flood of HD SMT games unless P5 sells millions of copies and that gets more people interested in other SMT games to the point where you'd get, say, Raidou 3 doing 500k+ worldwide
A big ol giant yellow head would be amazing.
I'm holding out for SMTxFE for HD protag designs though. I live for the day I can see Aleph's HD model ripped.
Personally SMT is right up there with Metroid for two game series that have consistently great soundtracks. I struggle to think of a game in either series that I don't like soundtrack wise.
They're only like 50 hours long on average. And I guess longer jrpgs aren't your thing. The only SMT or spinoff game I played that I felt dragged was Persona 4 and it's shitty 5 hour opening.
I don't think this intro song is by meguro
But yeah, I've listened to the boss battle theme beforehand (big boss battle or sth) and it's fantastic
oh god I'm in the base now, that music already gives me chills
>mfw hecate in DeSu
Being a part of the Tyrant family already makes you god tier because of tyrant loop. But Having the earliest instance of anti-most was great. Being magic focused so you could give her dances was the cherry on top
If the trailer is anything to go by it's going to be all mainline protags+If and their respective alignment reps. No space marrheen, Jimenez or zelenin though.
Because no one wants to make a bunch of original graphics for demons.
The DECORATE code for making weapons/enemies is pretty easy, graphics are the hard part.
Lovecraft gods aren't strangers to the Persona series.
By reps you mean even Nocturne's reason reps? Or will they just asspull something and make Lucifer the only chaos rep and so on?
>No space marrheen, Jimenez or zelenin though.
Goddamn, will we at least get
Gore/Arthur, Bugaboo or Mastema?
Well the trailer was years ago and was only made of pre-existing art.
Just go look it up yourself on youtube if you're interested, but I'm sure plenty can change provided we ever see anything about it again.
No SJ in general.
Though I can see Our Greatest Ally being a recruitable demon.
Actually, the trailer shows only Flynn and Isabeau, Demifiend and Chiaki, the two If protags I think, Aleph and some blonde chick, and the SMTI protag with some brunette.
I've more or less given up any practical hope.
At this point I'd be surprised, but ultimately pleased. Yet if they came out and said "JK it's cancelled" I'd say "this is what I expected"
If we lost hope that something good might happen, we'd be like White.
Do you want to be White anon? Do you?
I don't know what to expect, SMTfags will complain about FEfags shitting on their fanbase and vice-versa. To make matters worse, doesn't FE have their own Persona with Awakening?
You're taking things a bit too seriously between fanbases. At worst the game is irredemable shit and we get HD models for Mainline stuff. At beast it's 10/10 GOTY and both franchises grow in popularity.
FE fanbase outside of 4chan has never really been that good. No one likes to admit it though. Reminder that MK404 is a respected member in the fanbase and that GhebFE is a thing
As a huge fan of both series' I'd like it to come to fruition. Both series have their respective idiots and typical "I've only played Persona 4/Awakening, and it's the best!"
But the normal fans will probably be okay, provided it's actually good.
And considering it's Atlus it's not like they have a bad track record in the gameplay department.
I wouldn't say MK404 is really respected. A better example is the entire "development process" of The Last Promise", and Blazer's edgy take on the entire storyline.
But yeah they aren't great, and it's really only here than you can mention FE4 or 5 and have people even realize that you can play those games.
I can't hate blazer though. As shitty as TLP was, at least he helped out with the translation of New Mystery.
And while I'm at it, May YHVH bless whoever convinced the team to drop the shitty memes.
According to interviews it's being dev'd by Atlus, IntSys is just providing the characters, they aren't much involved in actually making the game.
Of course that was from an interview probably pre-production a year or two ago, things may have changed.
Oh I don't hate Blazer at all. He's owned up to his TLP days. And he's actually a pretty good romhacker and to his credit, despite it's cringey plot, TLP is still the only well made, completely original romhack
I just love the atmosphere in SMT games
I don't know what the proper word in english is, but in german I'd call the atmosphere "befremdlich"
How would you describe SMT's style?
"strange" is kind of too broad and "alien" is too ayy lmao
Soul Hackers is easily my favorite.
I've been a Megaten fan for a long time, and I'm way past that phase where you put the PS2-era games on a pedestal. Actually, I probably was never in that phase, considering I played the Super Famicom mainlines alongside Nocturne, and found myself enjoying them more.
Also, If... translation when??
how could I miss that
yeah, "surreal" is great
maybe also "perverted"? The way it takes common concepts and twists them into horrible creatures
I don't know, I just love it
Every game has very different atmosphere though.
SJ felt very urgent, while IV excelled at the feeling of being a foreigner.
But if I had to describe the series as a whole I'd probably call it desperate
Perverted would be good, were it not for it's connotation in the English language. But yeah I love the fact that these games always allow you to experience "normal" life before things go crazy. It really does wonders to add to the overall atmosphere.
I'd probably go with absurd or surreal. I know a lot of people tend to say dark, but there's so many times when SMT just doesn't take itself seriously I can't call it dark in good conscious.
Otherworldly, occultic, eldritch
