what is the most unintentionally unsettling game you've ever played?
After I finished Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, I realized I had just spent dozens of hours living out a mediocre and menial life in a mostly loveless marriage, raising a shitty kid going down a dead-end career path, and dying a meaningless death.
I think that's the scariest thing a game has ever shown me.
King's Field had that early 3D shit where people didn't even have a face. The game in itself had a dark atmosphere but what made it really shine were the limits of the engine.
Every 3d game from the 90s up to around 2000 had weird 3D models anyway where everything looks so alien and for me it just stuck into my imagination more easily. Maybe it's also because games nowadays are pieces of shit that try to be as realistic as possible but I have some kind of fetish for early 3D, I love how those games looked like games and not just a shitty version of the real world.
>playing offline because dialup
>out of boredom start talking to the bots
>they talk back
>mfw third world Canadian is so shit even that jumpscare stuttered
These guys scared the fuck out of me when I was a kid.
>Far Cry 3
>That mission where a sobbing woman asks you to check a plane crash nearby
>Get there, the wreck is all rusted over
>Some guy tells you the plane crashed ten years ago
>Go back to the house
>No one there
>Fuck the devs, I was playing a three in the morning and I didn't expect that
alex kidd in miracle world. this shit freaked me out as a kid! pic related
Not as the marines which are supposed to be the ones at the unsettling end, but as the alien.
If you haven't followed development since 2009, the fact that you can walk forever might not seem like much, but it was a big design choice to go with continuous generation instead of a single closed map generated at the start.
You are waiting to cross a busy street when a tall women wearing white walks up to you. While a surgical mask covers her mouth and nose, from her eyes and hair alone, you can tell that she is the most beautiful woman you have ever seen.
She asks if you think she's beautiful. How do you respond?
DEFCON is to this day the most unsettling thing I've ever played, but that was most likely intentional.
As for unintentional? Motherfucking Space Engine.
>turn speed to max
>fly around aimlessly
>suddenly light distorts and in a split second there's nothing but blackness
First time it happened I nearly jumped out of my seat.
>inb4 not a game
>on flats map
>spawn 1 AI controlled Pick-up truck
>assigned to [CHASE PLAYER]
>it spawns far beyond my draw distance
You never know when, or where from it'll come at you at 120 mph. If it even comes at all.
