Are voice actors as important to video games as they think they are?
>i know every voice actor
I would prefer if video games didn't have voice acting.
Writing in games tends to be
When there's no VA involved. VA has pretty much ruined/dumbed down RPGs.
Yes and no. Good voice acting is always a plus but sometimes they just want to throw the job to celebs who can't VA or just do it for the easy paycheck (you can just tell Daniel Craig doesn't want to be there in the 007 games he VA) and it ruins the game because more money went into getting them to voice a few things, advertising they are in the game, etc
There was some Dragon Age sperg in a thread once saying that VA doesn't hurt a games storytelling or depth to its writing/choices
I'd love to see any company do another PS:T style script again with full voice acting
>Plus, they can replace the voices and no one can tell the diddly-ifference
How about hack voice actors that just plain suck at acting like pic related?
they're both true(who even buys physical movies anymore)
but they're completely unrelated.
games are usually at least twice as long as anything on dvd. It's irrelevant though because they already only work 4 hours a day.
seeing all this hashtag bs and no explanations anywhere of what they're even trying to accomplish. From what I can gather they just want to raise their prices even higher.
Her voice alone gives me boners.
Imagine fucking her while she does her Mitsuru voice.
>I'd love to see any company do another PS:T style script again with full voice acting
Yeah, and that company would go straight into debt.
I mean, I'm not asking for high literature here. I just think that writers can take a lot more risk if they don't have to worry about a voice actor further down the game production pipeline.
At least, when the writing is quality. I didn't think Divinity: Original Sin's writing was any good; I'm not sure whether to blame the ESL status of the Belgians who made the game or the actual skill of the writers.
No. You can just get any bum from the street. Being a VO is a job usually given to friends, they're pushing it.
I think hiring bums to do VO work would be a great idea actually, they might even be better than the random chick that half asses everything.
I'd say probably not. Their actors so their ego and sense of self worth is automatically inflated in most cases.
And yea, sure some of them are probably cool people etc. but what they provide in games is still greatly overvalued by everyone imo. But I understand why it is the way it is and I have zero interest in fighting it.
>Tara Strong is literally meme tier
My point exactly, she is one of the more known VA's
Plus she's been doing Cartoon and Vidya VA work for many years now.
May not know her name, but sure as hell know at least one of her works.
>Are voice actors as important to video games as they think they are?
BTW how can games sell more than DVD? I believe they make more money, but I don't think they sell more.
Hello, are you aware that you need to be 18 to post on this board? Because you're apparently too young to recognize her from all the fucking cartoons and games she's voiced over the years. Completely unknown games like FF X and MGS Peace Walker / 5
I could argue famous VAs already get fucking over paid simply for their name.
I could also argue that many positions at AAA games are far overpaid and in extreme excess, which is why we have giant fucking bloated budgets.
Unionizing is stupid and going to shut them out of alot of work from naive or new studios who can't or won't work with unions. It will lock them forever to companies like EA and activision and the like. Which is fine as long as those companies are doing well and willing to put up with their shit. After all voice acting IS a talent and a skill. BUT it's also something that might get pulled from anywhere. I mean wasn't glados just some valve employee's mom? And look how well she sold their IP.
>Voice actors get their way
>Devs can't be fucked paying them extra, instead devote money that would've gone to VA back into the writing
>A new renaissance of RPGs with god tier writing begins
>Everything is right with video games again
Fuck voice acting. I can read, nigger, I don't need some cunt reading the words already on the screen, shit makes zero difference.
All I need is a HUT or HUH every time the character jumps or attacks or some shit and it's fine.
VA here (and no, I haven't been in anything big)
Doing voiceover work for games is very strenuous. There are days where you literally yell for 4 straight hours.
If a VA loses their voice from a day of recording, they're pretty fucked. They won't be able to record for like the rest of the week, which means they get no money
UNIONS WORKED OUT SO WELL FOR COMPOSERS, RITE GUISE?
On average CDs and animated films do not sell over 5-6million. Not a whole lot of games do, but think of it this way.
Guitar Hero Aerosmith sold better than EVERY ONE of their records.
>shitty loser actors who had to settle with video games pretending their work is worth shit in a medium that is all about gameplay/graphics/wrting/music
Isn't voice acting already a union job? They don't need the community's support. All they have to do is strike if they actually care.
I may have heard her, but so what?
Am I supposed to be impressed that Tara Strong can do the job she was paid money to do?
>animated shows you've watched
Good thing I don't watch animated shows then
There's also the issue that some actors need good direction, whereas a lot of VA work is just getting a script thrown at you and being told "Read that".
Case in point, Dinklage in Destiny. He sounds so fuckign deadpan and lifeless, you can hear him just reading the words off the page. When he's the guy you have to listen to the most, it really fucks things up.
Can we all agree on one thing? Dan Schneider's voice work in GTA: Vice City as a pedestrian was really good.
I'm perfectly fine with games that don't have full voice-overs for everything.
In fact, games were better prior to the philosophy of voice-overs for everything which was a byproduct of the fact the "mainstream audience" the publishers all want to pander to are mostly nigh-illiterate morons.
How much do voice actors get paid right now? I can't tell you if they should get paid more or not if I don't know their current pay. But general opinion is that voice acting isn't a hard job nor is it a job that only a select few can do.
Good voice acting turns good games into masterpieces.
its probably one of the only union jobs where if the corporation cared enough, they could completely shut them down because they could hire just about anyone they want from the street to do the job the exact same if not better.
>safe working hours
>for reading into a microphone
>Voicing games can blow your chords
Maybe you should exercise your voice more and stop being such a pussy. I used to sing tenor in a college choir and I sang 16 concerts in a 4-day period with no repercussions.
I'm all for fair compensation of good voice actors. Maybe Tara Strong should try being a good VA instead of prattling on about how she thinks she deserves more than she's worth.
Well it's true. Games sell way more than straight to dvd cartoon bullshit, they deserve to be paid more. You know, proportional to their contribution to the game. So if it's GTA or something they should be paid WAY more. But if they're just doing grunts or shit for a 2d indie platformer, no.
There's a stage of VA work for a game where you get to the random grunts, yells and shit. They do them all in a single day, usually after the rest of the VA is done.
You're just told "Alright we need a scream. No, louder. No, thats not it, a bit more high pitched. Go a bit longer this time" etc. You're justs tanding in a booth fucking screaming, yelling and grunting for a fucking day, and it can leave your throat fucked and you out of work for a few days.
>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tara_Strong#Video_games - literally look at all this garbage.url
>Well over 50 games VO and other shit still isn't mute
>demands 4 fair compensation
Japan does a better job and gets way less than you how is that in any way or form fair? Unless you're asking to make less.
Also why are you even bitching your making more than actual decent female VO's since most of that shit seems AAA.
I doubt huniepop's VO's made any more than you did.
Pro-tip: If you would budget yourself you wouldn't be bitching about money. Probably spends over 60% of her income treating herself in luxury she can't truly afford.
It's more like
>I don't bother watching the credits
because honestly, who the fuck cares? You shouldn't be able to tell a good voice actor by their voice anyways
Just remember, it was never meant to be shitty.
Shadows of the Damned was one of his best roles. Yes, most of it is his standard voice with a Spanish accent, but then you get parts where Garcia has trouble reading English.
>complaining about shit on twitter
Organise a fucking trade union if you want fair compensation, you dumb fuck. But you know what? She doesn't want fair compensation. She wants to be paid like a fucking pop star, because, fuck, like we didn't have a metric shit ton of useless millionaires blowing money on coke and recording shitty LPs.
Yes they should pay more. a video game makes a company more profit than a summer blockbuster film does. Why does some shit actor like Marky Mark get 10 million a film but someone doing a massive RPG gets like 20k?
ITT: Games that were made by their voice acting
>SOVEREIGN, YOUR BUILDING HAS BEEN UPGRADED
>actually using Chaos Wars to make a serious point
You are aware that purposefully had literally no effort put into because they were just required to have an english voice track and they knew the target audience would switch to Japanese right away? And that literally no one in that video is a professional voice actor?
No, and it seems like most of the time modern games blow their budget on VAs and advertisement. It's much easier just to have a few lines voiced, and have basic grunts recorded. The consumers can read and the voice comes naturally to their head through text.
That awful youtube LPer who only ever made popular videos because he said stupid shit like "tittysprinkles" in his deep voice for the entire duration of them went into voice acting and now shills the shitty games he got bit parts in.
Yelling and screaming does way more damage to your vocal chords than faggot singing, you dumb faggot. Besides, you get free inner neck massages after every performance when you're in a choir.
>use this in the united states of freedom
>get your dog shot to death by cops
>get tackled onto the floor and shot execution style
>it's only protocol
except she's done tons of other voices including
just to name a few.
Hey, he's awesome as long as he doesn't do the generic Steve Blum Spike Spiegel voice. I agree I'm tired of hearing that shit.
>way more damage to your vocal chords than faggot singing, you dumb faggot
No, you fucking idiots, you don't pay writers more and suddenly get better writing. You do the best job you possibly can regardless of what you get paid. Your next paycheck is depending on it, no position in this industry is guaranteed.
I see. Why not break it up over several days or even 2? Might even give them VA some time to think about how to scream, or whatever actors think when doing voice over. Is that what they're unionizing for, cause I can understand that
How exactly can it blow your chords? How is it any less stressful than filming a show? Most games only contain maybe 2-3 hours of actual talking, no different than a movie between the characters.
Yeah, and those VAs get treated like fucking shit too. It can be much rarer for tv shows though. DBZ is probably the most extreme screaming ever.
A lot of them don't even want much, they just want the screaming shit spread out throughout recording, not bunched up into one day at the end so they have to take three days off afterwards.
If a voice actor worked 50 hours or less and made 100,000 dollars a year I would think that is more than fair.
That is more than programmers, who typically burnout in there job, didn't go into for passion and work far more hours, make.
literally everyone in the game industry is horrifically underpaid except for the big dumb famous studio heads and the producers
the attrition rate for technical people moving into similar jobs that pay 3x is much is atrocious. that's not exaggeration, one of my friends literally went from irrational to general computing and got a 3x pay raise. basically the entire industry only functions on the back of exploited young people who really want to break in
so anyway yeah VAs are probably underpaid. everyone else is
