When will Western art design actually catch up to Japanese design? The variety and originality in western games is piss poor. It's like a competition who can shit out the most blandest characters fastest.
Broad audience appeal is far more important to western products of any kind. Japan is content to cater to a niche if they can find money in it.
Political inclinations or motivations in design are also more obvious in western products, if only because I'm more familiar with western politics than eastern.
>JAPAN IS SUPER GLORIOUS
>WE SHOULD GO BACK TO BEING SUPER GLORIOUS
>NO WE ARE SUPER GLORIOUS BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH MONEY WE MAKE RIGHT NOW
>THE YAKUZA IS LITERALLY PAYING ME TO NOT GIVE A FUCK
Welcome to Japanese politics.
I think this is very true. When I was at university there was a very strong push to develop games with as broad an appeal as possible... Which I personally found a bit odd to tell to upcoming game designers. It is not like we are going to be instantly making AAA games with massive marketing department. Seems simpler to cater to a fond niche and let fan obsession let them generate interest for you.
Japan is much more willing to pursue niche products. Note that text adventures are still a thing there. Hell, consider Rapelay. If that isn't targetting a niche market and not giving any shits about broad appeal I dunno what is.
>When I was at university there was a very strong push to develop games with as broad an appeal as possible
That is depressing as fuck. I can only imagine all the retarded things they say at "game design" courses. No smoke without fire.
How is snake even "japanese" in the first place?
Then how is he different than, say, Captain Price from Call of Duty? They're both veteran soldies hurr durr, but snake is favored for his superior japanese design because he's made by a jap developer, and being made into a stereotypical western soldier somehow doesn't matter.
>inb4 hurr durr he believes in santa so quirky
Dragons Dogma, Snake and the DS2 Knight are all western designs portrayed by Japanese people.
DD is total Tolkien fantasy, Snake is grizzled Americanu soldier and the knight is generic fantasy hero.
You shouldn't act retarded just so you can get out of an argument. Unless you provide arguments for what makes Snake's design japanese, I'll assume you're pulling your thoughts out of your ass.
>there are people on /v/ who prefer western games over Japanese games
Why is there never a fair comparison? You are seriously comparing in-game images to concept art. Jesus.
>Unless you provide arguments for what makes Snake's design japanese
BECAUSE FUCKING JAPANESE GUY FROM JAPAN MADE IT. INSPIRATIONAL SOURCES ARE MEANINGLESS SINCE EVERYTHING IS DERIVED FROM SOMETHING ELSE.
>OP making a fair argument
But that would be the sensible thing to do, Anon, you should know by now that's not how it works anymore.
It's no longer about the discussion, it's about the circlejerk. Good threads die while threads that aren't even video games thrive.
>he likes something I don't like
>let me throw out a bunch of buzzwords
I'll throw them right back. Enjoy your pedophile enabling cliche infested epic OC characters and super deep Japanese storiesu
I think it would work best as a small collaboration between 2-3 Eastern-Design-Preferring Anons and 2-3 Western-Design-Preferring Anons so we can get a compounded effort on both sides to enable actual comparison and subsequent discussion, as opposed to one guy with a clear preference or just some meme hog making an epic post.
I don't believe I play enough games on either side to be of much use.
Yeah I'm not sure where I was going on that one
>I don't like something so everything in that genre is generic
Great argument brah
He asked what am I playing RIGHT NOW, not what's my favorite game of all time. And what does it matter? Some people actually make money and they don't feel bad about spending 0.5% of it on a videogame. And no, I didn't buy it, my friend did.
And this is in game art from EA game. Looks like 13y old teen work from deviantart.
Except all Japanese stories are just crazy fantastical so it makes you believe its super creative when really anyone who has taken large amounts of hallucinogens can come up with something just as crazy and random
Japanese games hardly make any sense at all they're just overly flashy cartoons with FF style gameplay shoved in and some fan service in the form of anime girls who were designed in under a week
What is so creative about japanese media? The variety of visuals they can come with simply comes from the fact that their visuals are low-detailed, there aren't a lot of restrictions as to what can be drawned without it looking retarded.
Outside visual aspects, seems to me they are using the same tropes over and over again, even more than the western media.
And this is artwork for FFXIII.
Looks like weaboo cancer faggotry.
That's not a belief, that's just fact. Anyone who disagrees obviously doesn't know the meaning of the word and is therefore not qualified to give their opinion on the subject.
And now here is a quality artwork
Obviously, from a western dev.
>people would actually rather run around as an autistic loli trying to "save the universe" by being annoying as fuck than cleave and rend their way through endless tides of enemies as a savage war hero
Cosmical horror is now an 8 years old girl.
Actually naruto is a perfect example. A decent concept that was thrown to the wind in favor of a "deep" plot that didn't make any sense at all towards the end. All the" crazy cool" eye powers and plot twists in the world couldn't save it.
And on this slide, beautiful western game art.
>people would actually rather run around as an autistic loli trying to "save the universe" by being annoying as fuck
>people want to be a loli
>not Zabrak masterrace
Any MGS & FF is more movie than Last of Us will ever be.
The exception is the Last of Us is such a high quality story & game that it will be actually made into a movie.
Japs doesnt have Naughty Dog you faggots haha
This is something I wonder about all the time and I think it has to do with western developers doing things by committee including artistic direction. I have a lot of artbooks and collect them, but most of them are from japanese games. And this is because a lot of western concept art is pushed out, very unrefined kinda value built pieces of work. Like random jots of artistic information but nothing that really has much personality to it. Look at Feng Zhu's work compared to Akihiko yoshida's. I think japanese developers are just more willing to let one artist direct the aesthetic as opposed to a bunch of concept artists they just hired for that job. Kazuma Kaneko is another good example and smt games have a distinct aesthetic to them because of it.
You only really get to see the sort of direction that japanese games have in the west when it comes to indie games. Skullgirls, Bastion, Darkest Dungeon all have one singular artist coming up with the assets and providing the artistic direction for the entire game. Triple A games are created with hundreds of people and you have multiple artist pushing out shit at the same time trying to appeal to a market. That's what I think at least.
I don't have Facebook approved taste. I play what I want. If I like a game I play it and if it's slightly weird I just don't share it with people I know wouldn't appreciate it. The fact is I don't want to play shitty modern Japanese games like Neptunia because they're fucking cringe worthy even playing it alone in a dark room in the middle of the night. I couldn't make it past the first 2 hours on Re;Birth because I just kept laughing at the game and cringing at the stereotypical weeb shit that was in every single damned sentence
>photobash on background
>poop brown photoshop filter ground
>photoshop brush thunder
>whole color is fucked
>perspective is fucked
>those pasted details with visible white border
Yeah, looks great.
>I've always been into Western RPGs, and that's what we make. I've never been into Japanese RPGs because I want to roam, and traditionally they don't let you do that. I find that in Japanese art, and science fiction and fantasy, that it's super fantastical. In Western stuff, it tries to get more realistic, as much as it can for what it is. So like, we'll approach it like- this is fantasy with elves, and swords, and dragons, but it has to feel real, like this could happen, or did happen, even with Mass Effect and the way it approaches science fiction. But when you see the Japanese ones, it's crazy on another level...like that looks cool, but that's nuts, it's really high fantasy, it's really crazy science fiction...and then the earth eats itself...and then why are there nukes, and...I have trouble with my father and mother. I don't get into that stuff, I think because I can't wrap my hands around it, so it doesn't suspend my disbelief in the way like- sort of like Red Dead, where immediately you think this is all real, I'm here, I'm doing this, and these are real places in the West even though they're made up.
I know the western shit is cherry picked but you tend to see uglier characters in western games because western games focus more on trying to be realistic and most people are ugly, therefore having ugly people in your game makes it realistic.
I dunno OP. I think you just might be cherry picking.
The west focuses on creating ugly characters because they don't want to upset the landwhales or SJWs that inhabit the west.
Japan creates beautiful characters because they don't care about SJWs, and know that no one will ever be this perfect, so they draw them perfect.
What he says stills holds relevance
Even if Skyrim sucked shit it's story was grounded in reality enough to at least explain it to someone without them having to play the game. It is a fantasy story that's more rooted in realism.
Try explaining FFXs story though
That's a nice theory but I honestly think you're slightly obsessed and it's causing you to vastly overestimate the attention anyone else pays to SJWs.
In reality it's probably a simple matter of differing tastes.
West create ugly characters because they can't afford good 3D artists.
Took 6 years to fix ugly faces, and still random mod maker can do it 10 times better
You have to be 18 to post here
>tfw I beat the entire game on the original xbox
God that was an awful experience. Loading screens every 5 steps.
>men don't spend a lot of time at home
>women are busy as fuck
>no time for kids
>massive pressure on youth's shoulder
>government is elected by elders, and therefore isn't cattering to its active population as much as it should
>this lack of catter makes it hard economically to have a child
>education and cost of life that would come with having a kid is too high for many families
Name one good JRPG to come out in the last 3 years
Whatever I post you'll just call it shit so why bother?
I think Western art styles are more expressive and diverse anyways.
The only flaw that DD had was being poorly optimized and also running on older tech. The presentation between the three are nearly identical, except vanilla Skyrim looks plastic, and Inquisition looks like everyone is melting because of the lights.
Some bitch from Bulletstorm, forgot her name, the pirate chick next to her is what im interested in
Yeah, most of Japan's problem comes from its workaholic culture.
Young adults are so pressured by societies to find a job and stick to it that any project going outside of that is hard to settle on (eg having a child). Working on their carreers for most of their youth, once they reach the financial stability suitable for a kid it's too late.
Exactly. There's plenty of variety if you know where to look. And even within the "realistic" majority there's plenty of stylisation. Beats having anime all the time, at any rate.
You're right. This is a better example. The webm is all I had on hand until now.
I hate this Buzzword because it's just a term that buttblasted Nippon dicksuckers use to justify their special snowflake characters all with unique things that make them individual
Most people in real life are hardly distinguishable from another save for a few small personality traits
Generic is just to say realistic because everyone is generic and those who aren't usually are wearing trench coats and fedoras
>Implying AW isn't the best CoD MP to come out since 4.
The art design is a bonus too. Go figure the "Japan is superior than all others" weeaboo squad wouldn't know what the fuck they're talking about.
Also why are we only discussing humans design?
She has breasts, they just aren't balloon tits. Game designers over emphasized body parts due to poor graphics in early games, this led to people thinking DDD sized breasts as being normal in games. If you saw half the ladies in video games in the real world you would either laugh at them or just think they are pregnant because their massive breasts would be dropping all the way to their waists.
>What is style
something the japs do exceedingly poorly?
