>>285670360 Thermal clips were well explained in ME2, and they make perfect sense for military regulars. The military issue assault rifle can fire 40 shots before overheating, with a cooldown phase of 10 seconds, a thermal clip allows you to eject the sink, and slam another in and keep firing.
>>285670853 It would be better if they added that as a quicker way to skip the cooldown. Except, what happened was that the thermal clips were basically magazines since you can no longer fire at all if you run out of them.
>>285671262 >>285670947 >>285670853 The explanation of them is completely fine. It was the implementation of it in terms of gameplay. Instead of giving players a low amount of Thermal Clips (like something around 10-12) that would instantly cool down the heat meter, they just made it a completely rote third person shooter.
It was a great way to make a sci-fi game feel like a near future game instead.
>>285671243 In the 2 year gap between shepard being spaced and the lazarus projects conclusion, all guns in the universe took a technological backstep because the illusive man realised that reapers were actually coming and this somehow gave every race, including those beyond citadel space the foresight to downgrade weapons to prepare for this reaper invasion, the only gaffe is when shepard wakes up and its all about collectors for an entire game, who as the superior species also use clips..
Its some geneva thing.. our enemies use clips so we must use clips.. IDK.. im burning my brain trying to explain it..
>>285671675 >If clips where in the 1st game no one would have cared.
Yeah no shit. In the first game, there was a neat explanation for why guns have infinite ammo.
And then IMMEDIATELY, the very first thing you do in 2 is pick up a gun and somehow Shepard not only knows about the new way the guns work, but now all guns are just normal ass guns instead of cool sci-fi ones.
>>285671871 The hate only really started with Arrival. Obviously there were people who right from the start, but those were drowned out by those horrid general threads that were constantly on the frontpage.
>>285671781 ME2 got shit for its mistakes, but ultimately it was still praised for waifu-simulator The "who do I fug" thread count was fairly high Although to me I enjoyed the story of 1 more, but I enjoyed the story telling better in 2
>>285670853 They were explained but also contradicted the ME1 explanation. Overheating weapons were replacing ammo-based weapons. In ME2, they literally go back to ammo-based weapons but call it something else.
>>285672757 It's more of a combination really. It works as ammunition for gameplay mechanics, but really, it's just weapons that don't cool down on their own, and instead use a heat sink.
The reason they stated is because it's the system the Geth used when attacking the Citadel, and they managed to easily overpower C-Sec because they had a much higher rate of fire because they didn't need to manually let their weapon cool down.
>>285670853 >he military issue assault rifle can fire 40 shots before overheating, with a cooldown phase of 10 seconds, a thermal clip allows you to eject the sink, and slam another in and keep firing
Except in real life, combat is not fought at such a pace that a person can't wait 5 seconds after firing repeatedly for so long, if they were even to fire that long which would never happen with a trained military unit. And the logistics of supplying armies with thermal clips over the absolutely based and godly near infinite magnet makes clips completely backwards and useless for 99.999999% of applications.
>>285673351 It was the batarians ultimate espionage goal. get the entire galaxy to revert to a retard less efficient type of firearm while they hoard all the old ones. it would have worked too if it wasn't for those damn meddling reapers!
>>285673540 I didn't even need heatsink mods. With the Spectre shotgun, I had about seven consecutive shots of holding the mouse down before it would overheat. If I threw one biotic power in the middle of that, it would reset back down.
Am I the only one who can't stand these races? They just came out of nowhere, and suddenly they're fucking everywhere in ME2, in almost every mission. Batarians are all the same too, they hate humans, they're slavers, and they work for mercenary groups.
Am I supposed to feel bad that I killed over 300,000 Batarians in Arrival? Because I've never met one that wasn't a faggot that deserves to be purged.
Goddamn I'm pissed they stopped focusing on cool races like Elcor or Hanar for those fucks.
If a modern soldier possessed a weapon that could fire NON-STOP for forty seconds and pause for ten and be ready to fire again, it would change the face of warfare. Most modern weapons can't even fire for ten consecutive seconds without taking twenty or so to be reloaded, depending on the skill of the operator. For weapons that have magazines large enough to be fired on full-auto for longer than fifteen-to-twenty seconds the problem then becomes the weapon catching on fire, melting and/or exploding.
>modern armies literally already use thermal clips and have for decades on their weapons >the invention of good thermal clips created a world-class machinegun that everyone opposing shit bricks in fear of, that earned the nickname "hitler's buzzsaw" because of how effective it was at scything down troops
>there are retards in this thread genuinely defending "clips" >there are retards in this thread claiming that you absolutely HAVE to fire constantly till it overheats and then wait >there are retards in this thread who think that any military on the planet would opt for limited ammo over unlimited ammo >there are retards in this thread who claim soldiers aren't trained to use weapons properly and would ALWAYS overheat every time they fire a gun >there are retards in this thread who didnt mod their ar to fire infinitely >there are retards in this thread
>>285675585 >Regenerating health without being a Soldier or having a mod >Removing mods >Removing abilities >Less weapons >Less armour >Three or four things bound to the Space button >Chesthigh walls everywhere >Can't even make most of the interior assets fly around >Most Biotic abilities being completely useless due to Armour, Shield and Barrier >Universal ability cooldowns >Clips I'm sure it became better anon, especially if you like Gears of War.
>People felt that the inventory system in 1 was confusing
People always use the HL2E2 tunnel or the Dishonored quotes where the playtesters got confused and lost when a guard told them they couldn't go up the stairs, but I feel that the ME1/ME2 inventory system removal to be a big one too.
>ME1 >Exploring some planet >Hey look it's that same building >Spend 10 minutes shooting all the Geth >Leave one outside because he's glitched into the ground >Go inside, shoot everyone >Finish quest >Walk back outside, get into vehicle >BWAAAAAAAH >It's been destroyed >There's no other way off of the planet >Game reloads a save from 3 hours ago because the game has that weird autosave system that never works
>>285671492 >The explanation of them is completely fine. No it wasn't. It was retarded. You know how they dealt with the overheating issue back in woarld war fucking one? They had a water jacket around a machine gun barrel that would boil off. The steam would do down a pipe into a tank and then the gunner would just pour the water back in when it was running low. The Brits broke all kinds of records when they had 10 of them firing nonstop for 12 hours straight. Pic is a Maxim but the Vickers is just a variant. The retards at Bioware were actually telling us that they still hadn't come up with a similar solution before we discovered FTL travel.
>>285671492 >The explanation of them is completely fine From a lore standpoint, it makes no sense that weapon manufacturers would recall EVERY SINGLE GUN EVER to retrofit it with a technology popularized by Geth, the top-tier heatsink mods in ME1 basically made overheating a non-issue, all the change did was make way for tactical shooting-esqe gameplay
Also, when going Jacob's Dad's rape planet, all of their shit is using thermal clips, despite the fact that The Gernsback crashed 10 years ago, before anyone knew what a thermal clip was, why is this allowed
Your argument would work if thermal clips were only applied to the Mass Effect equivalent of a heavy machinegun, but that isn't the case. All small arms now use thermal clips. It really is like having a pistol, shotgun or sniper rifle with infinite ammo and then straight up introducing the equivalent of ammo.
>>285677820 >triple the fire rate >heavy machine guns ingame can fire like 200 rounds before you need a new clipazine >IRL and m60E4 can fire 800 rounds in one gigantic burst https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zh8lDgV993A
>Shepard can carry an assault rifle, a sniper rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol >B-B-B-BUT SOLDIER'S GUNS WILL OVERHEAT AND THEY'LL GET DEAD BECAUSE 10 SECONDS IS A REALLY LONG TIME I KNOW BECAUSE I GO TO /k/ >Completely ignoring that they could realistically go into battle with 2-3 assault rifles and switch them out as needed
>>285678000 Fucking forget that, how often is a soldier going to flip his rifle into full auto and just lay into fire? Standard infantry will always use semi auto or burst, more than enough time for the gun to cool down.
>>285672352 Retcons out the ass over how and when Reapers are capable of invading, because now, they're capable of waking-up and invading from dark space, despite the fact that Vigil stated a trip like that would take forever, hence their reliance on The Conduit instantly-warping them to The Citadel with ease
Like, if you've always been capable of invading through a magical backwater relay in a matter of months, WHY DIDN'T SOVEREIGN DO THIS INSTEAD OF ATTRACTING ATTENTION BY GOING AFTER THE FUCKING CITADEL IN A MILITARIZED GALAXY
>>285678280 >a manageable amount of heat Evidently not considering your weapons overheat after only a short amount of sustained fire. We have IRL machineguns that can put through more rounds than ME guns in a burst without needing any tender loving care.
ME guns run much, much hotter than modern guns. That's basically a fact.
>>285678453 >ME guns run much, much hotter than modern guns. That's basically a fact. And in ME1 they had the ability to make it a non-issue without thermal clips. Why the fuck are you defending thermal clips so hard? They were just an annoying gameplay choice that the devs made and then crudely shorehorned into the game.
>>285678604 No, but modern day assault rifles don't really overheat either unless you put on enormous drum mags and deliberately try to do it, and even then any wooden furniture is gonna catch on fire before the barrel melts. ME assault rifles overheat as a matter of course.
>>285676941 The inventory in ME1 was kind of shit. Not confusing, per se, but annoying. You'd accumulate tons and tons of useless crap and most guns were almost identical. ME2 cut things down too far, but the direction was right. Fewer weapons with bigger differences.
>>285678874 >Maybe it's not economically feasible and Shepherd gets them because he's a Spectre. You literally find these things on the corpses of whatever mercenary you kill or in any of the containers that you can loot anywhere that you go. They're common as balls.
>>285677869 >Also, when going Jacob's Dad's rape planet, all of their shit is using thermal clips, despite the fact that The Gernsback crashed 10 years ago, before anyone knew what a thermal clip was, why is this allowed thank you I noticed that shit immediately and was pretty butt flustered
But that's a bullshit excuse anyway. I'd argue that Shepherd doesn't traverse actual warzones and if these things are upgrades that don't come in factory configuration then there has to be a reason why.
>>285679178 I was unaware that every single ME gun had a 40 round mag and full auto. Sniper rifles could overheat after just two (TWO!) shots in quick succession. That's barely even semi-auto.
>b-b-b-but no ammo You're feeding those soldiers, right? It's not as if you actually save on logistics. It's entirely possible that SPACE MAGIC LOGISTICS! makes ammo supply a non-issue if you already have to feed, clothe, and in some cases supply O2, for your troops.
>>285679686 >Yeah and you're wrong/stupid. Then address that statement. Don't make another post that's literally almost a word for word copy of one I've already replied to as if its somehow something new and worth my time.
>>285678874 Actually, the easy way is to fire a bit slower so that the gun never overheats in the first place, or switch to one of your three other guns if it does.
Personally, I still don't understand why they implemented thermal clips. It feels incredibly half-assed. As long as you're advancing and killing folks, you'll have plenty of clips, and in the sections where you're expected to stand your ground and kill folks coming at you, the game gives you infinitely respawning clips to pick up. What's the point? Did some test audience somewhere find ME1's overheating mechanics too confusing?
>>285680212 Well it was too easy to never even think about weapons overheating when you knew what you were doing in ME1 So in true bioware fashion rather than fixing it they removed it entirely, refer to planet exploration and the Mako for other examples.
So I've only beaten the first game and plan to play the others. I've already gotten suggestions to not do it but I have to because...well, I already own them.
I just have one question and would prefer no spoilers: Do the batarians from the DLC in the first game reappear? I think I cared about that DLC way more than I should have, but I still wanna kick that guys ass.
>>285680212 I agree that I don't like thermal clips. They felt like shit. But I do think there's a strong argument to made that they make sense in the universe. Do they make sense in the way that they were implemented? No. Jacob's dad being just one example. The magical switchover being the other. But thermal clips can and should co-exist with overheating weapons. For example, a GPMG with thermal clips vs an anti-tank rifle that overheats.
They are different technologies with different advantages and disadvantages and should occupy the roles that they are strong at and not the roles that they aren't.
>the easy way is to fire a bit slower so that the gun never overheats in the first place AKA the World War One style of machinegunning.
>or switch to one of your three other guns if it does. Why not just train two more soldiers and give all three guns that don't overheat.
>>285679616 holy shit your shepard looks like he's been fat for the last ten years and suddenly got fit.
But regarding the ending. For some reason when I first played ME1 I was 14 when the game ended, I just sat there, looking at the monitor and pushed my chair away for the table and just thought about the ending for a while. It was the first space opera -esque game I had ever played and I loved the amount of dialogue the game had. It was amazing at the time and the first one is still without a doubt my favourite of all Ass effects
>>285680626 >holy shit your shepard looks like he's been fat for the last ten years and suddenly got fit. He's even got that "/fit/ said girls would finally like me but they don't" thousand yard stare of despair.
