>>285742640 This, but I prefer tank. I'm not putting the most important role in the hands of a stranger who might be incompetent, but I will also gladly switch to healer or dps if it helps get the ball rolling.
Was tank for the longest time until I eventually got fed up with the retards and went DPS. After wrecking shit for a while I stopped MMOs completely September 2012 to enjoy glorious single player games. That backlog is shrinking.
>>285742416 Used to be tank exclusively, but my schedule became too unpredictable so I switched to DPS. I didn't want to join a guild as an important role only to have to tell them next week, I couldn't be there. I don't like DPS but since they're a dime a dozen, I can be flexible with my schedule.
>>285742416 I tend to go go tank is healer is solely a background class, but if healers actually get to do some combat, then I'll probably go that route. FFXI RDM was the bees knees, but there's nothing really like it in other games.
>>285745387 If you mean like the WoW hunter class, it's because it makes leveling extremely easy.
>>285745539 >tfw in Asheron's Call people would level mages just to set up bot macros and have them sit in towns buffing people >there was always at least one dedicated buffbot in each monarchy for whenever the group would go out questing
Asheron's Call had the best community out of any MMO, fuck man.
>>285742416 Typically I heal. Most my friends fight over the tank roll and are not that fond of healing so it was a perfect roll for me. I end up choosing a class where I can do a multiple amount of rolls if possible. For WoW I played Shaman and now for FFXIV I play Scholar (can switch to Summoner even if it's fairly boring)
>>285745643 I just wonder how many people on the bottom of the dps lists just coasting through the raids caused wipes and no one noticed at all. Imagine how many total shit dps must have been in every raid and the only reason why the boss went down was because there was enough not shit people there to make a difference.
Or all the raids where no one really questioned it and it was just if you were there that was good enough as the group just wiped because there was five people there who were barely pulling weight.
Best DD class in any game? This right here. I remember carefully planning out and timing weapon skills for max damage against counter-elemental type mobs. Parties used to message and invite me even when I wasn't LFG. Was good times, friends. Never again though.
Dps is actually the hardest, but only the truly enlightened understand. Tanks simply stand there and mash cooldowns for important abilities and taunt when necessary. Healers are next hardest, but still only have to play whack-a-mole and pop cooldowns for certain phases. Dps have to understand the intricacies of their rotation, manage cooldowns, avoid abilities, do extra random shit depending on the encounter, pull good dps, position themselves, etc.
DPS: >DON'T STEP IN THE FIRE >INSTANT RAPE RADIUS HERE >DON'T SPEND MORE THAN A NANOSECOND ATTACKING HERE OR YOU'RE FUCKED >THE HEALER DOESN'T KNOW YOU'RE EVEN PART OF THE GROUP >IT'S POWERING UP AGAIN, RUN AWAY >DON'T DO TOO MUCH DAMAGE AT ONCE HERE OR YOU'LL GET ITS ATTENTION >COMPETE WITH EVERY OTHER NIGGER IN THE GROUP FOR A SWORD THAT MAY OR MAY NOT DROP
>>285746162 Yes, and in my experience it's happened. I was in a pretty decent guild doing normal progression back in Cata. Me and one other were the only good DPS doing a consistent 25k+ DPS with the others coasting around 15-18k. After one too many wipes the entire guild just collapsed and everyone scattered. Having good DPS is vital to a guild because the entire encounter relies so extremely on them to do their job well in order to finish the fight before the healers go OOM or the tank fucks up.
>>285746719 >Tank armor drops >Everyone lets the tank take it >Healer armor drops >Everyone lets the healer take it >DPS weapon/armor drops >A battle between 3 or more players to see who is either lucky enough to nab it, or who needs it the most
>>285743159 If you are playing MMOs longer than a year and you have this mentality, you are even worse. I played healers and tanks, especially healers though, for over 8 years and those two roles are all about staying on the comfort zone as much as you can. Sure you can push yourself all the time as a healer, but why overheal people? As a dps you are always pushing, cuz your numbers can always be better, you can always do better. Always. There is never a moment for you to rest if you want to keep going up.
Now I'm not saying there aren't comfort zone dps all around any MMO, but the role brings you the possibility to push yourself more than you can even think of when healing or tanking.
Here is the end all be all of the trinity in mmos.
Once you have done the content once, healing/tanking is an absolute fucking joke. It's why you have so many people switch away from tanking/healing and others ADAMANTLY defending it to their deaths, for self validation.
They are both the most simple roles after performing their jobs once.
If you are ANYTHING but a massive fucking casual, you are competing for world/US/EU rankings, etc. This means your dps make or break you. Most of you fucking suck at mmos so you think that because you had to actually read a fight mechanic as a tank for normal modes/lfr shit that you are doing a hard role.
Heres the spoiler alert. You are fucking nothing without dps, sure you can down some content with just tanks/healers (which is all irrelevant old shit) but dps is what makes mmos competitive.
I can say without a doubt as a healer, that people generally blame dps for things because it's an easy out. But when you have a tank or a healer who is bad it is very obvious. I remember running a 24 man raid in FFXIV with my friend and we were both healing the one 8 man. It was my first time and we had to split up because the 2 healers in one of the other 8 mans couldn't keep them up and I ended up healing my 7 man group alone.
If you have a tank that doesn't know how to position or to take aggro off of healers you know very fast.
DPS is just a go to because it's easy to blame when everything else is going well.
>>285747717 >tank is doing terribly >outright tell him he's shit and initiate a vote kick >the group refuses, then initiate a kick for me >removed from the group and forced to sit back in an 30+ minute long queue
Try tanking any of the last four raids like that on hc/mythic and see what happens. If you're going to tell me encounters like shadow shamans in SoO, Iron Qon in ToT or Imperator in HM don't require skill as a tank on the highest difficulty, you are a special breed of retard. I don't even play a tank.
I played in a top 200 US guild when I played WoW (stopped after the first patch of cata). And I played healer. The thing is, every role is equally vital to the success of the raid. On actually hard content every single person in the raid is key.
But usually tanks are bros. Dps can be elitist and obnoxious, but healers are the fucking worst. They constantly have this god complex that they are SO invaluable and they are some kind of fucking saint because they CHOOSE to play support. They get bossy, use their rarity as a bargaining chip, and constantly guild hop like the faggots that they are.
>>285742416 Mainly Tank, and sometimes DPS. I like tank just for being able to crowd control what goes on, and being able to tell if I mess up or not. DPS is also fun but I don't think some folks realize that when playing DPS you have to maintain a constant watch and uptime on your attacks.
>>285747951 Healer rankings suck. It's the most obnoxious thing in any raid.
I used to play healer on a server top guild and it was ridiculous. My day consisted of trying to heal everyone as quick as possible in order to "steal" heal from the other healers and make them overheal, which didn't count for the meters, so I would be the top 1 healer. It's all about fucking your guildmate so his cast is useless [overheal] by the time it goes off.
At least when you are doing dps you aren't taking away dps from your other friends.
>People trying to make their class seem harder than it actually is.
Let's get serious. No role in any modern MMO is actually hard. It all boils down to a rotation. Hell, some addons in WoW actually tell you when to do things and what attacks are coming. Some even tell you when to switch tanks and everything.
You DPS sure get buttblasted when you're clogging up LFG, huh? You're the dime-a-dozen role and no one wants you because they can always find another person with the same "skills" you think you're bringing to the table.
I used to always play tank cause typically I wanted to run in and kill shit, but I honestly like being a healer now. Even when you travel alone, you can't help but stumble across a party that wants you in. Plus, managing people's hp and buffs is surprisingly fun.
>>285748209 This is true for every role you fucking faggot. I was in a better guild than you and went through easily 5 guilds over the years and experienced people just like you are describing in every role.
The one dps that is fucking amazing and is part of the reason for your guilds success acts like this just as much as "healfag" that wants special treatment to keep healing.
>>285744537 If a random healer comes by and heals me when I'm not on a team with them I'll thank them because they didn't need to do that. If I'm on a team with them it's their job to heal so I don't thank them.
tanks and healers. You can throw a rock hit a DPS have it bounce off and hit another, and their response would be "LFG?". Also, anyone who says it takes more skill to play DPS than tank or healer needs their head checked. Lets be honest, I can teach a dog a rotation. And lets be more honest, that's all most MMO's are, learning a rotation (providing most dps, best damage reduction, highest threat, lowest threat, best mana/force/whatever efficiency, blah blah blah), and paying attention to everything, all the time, knowing your class and the gear you need/should have and the spec you need/should have for what you're trying to do.
Tank is boring and easy. The only good part of playing Tank is knowing at least you don't have to deal with a shit Tank ruining your run.
Healing is where it's at, most important role, always carrying the group in anything but the lowest level content, if someone fucks up you are there to patch up their mistake. Maximum awareness needed tracking yourself, the boss and the entire party while the other roles only track 1 or 2 of those elements at a time.
DPS are faggots. DPS checks exist so they actually have a purpose. They still fail that.
>>285747370 What the fuck are you talking about? It's just dealing damage! It's all you do! You and two other assholes, just deal damage! No pressure you, you just have to keep plinking away at the enemy. I can go to any pub and get any number of guys that deal damage, jesus.
>MapleStory >Pick spearman because I knew the lease about them and wanted to try something new >Surely when they level up enough they'll rival other classes >Mages still best class by the end >Thieves attacker quicker AND harder >Spearman and the classes they split into never gain the ability to hit more than like six times per hit >tfw most interesting melee class is worst class in entire game
>>285748729 That's generally how I rank it. Even when the tank fucks up a little and loses aggro, I get them saying sorry for that and my response is always "Did anyone die? No? Then I don't care man, no worries."
>>285748724 Hey, it's ok to criticize, but initiating votekick out of sudden is a dick move. You should have suggested him to go try some other raid instead. The fact that people were more eager to get wiped yet another time then to stay with you should tell you something.
>>285748475 Quite the other way around. Anyone can heal enough to go through content. Anyone can tank enough to go through content. And there is nothing else you can do really besides that when you are tanking or healing. Just heal enough so people don't die. Just tank enough so you don't lose aggro. You can't have an excellent healer that will blow every other healer away cuz, well, after a certain point you are just overhealing and who wants that? You can't have an excellent tank that will blow every other tank away cuz well, every tank is keeping aggro and taking little damage, whats the major difference?
For dps there is no roof like there is for those 2 roles. There isn't "enough" for a decent dps. He will always be pushing to do better numbers, all the fucking time. Every second of the encounter he will be perfecting his play so his damage can grow even more. That means you can have some excellent dps that will blow the fuck out of anyone else, and those are extremely valuable for any raid leader with a brain. If you have any experience you will know those kind of dps players are worth more than any tank or healer.
DPS because the race is fun You have to be on top of shit or your ass is grass, and nobody will give a fuck. Doing damage, dodging aoe's and shit, whatever. There are thousands that do what you do already.
>mwf I read these threads >reading stories about brain-dead niggers standing in the stupid
I consider myself a pretty shit player, but generally move when dangerous shit happens >usually last to die when shit goes horribly wrong
>>285747373 Truth. DPS is the only role not hard-capped in skill - or at least only hard-capped by 100% perfect play which is only really possible in theory. On the other hand once you're good enough that no one in your raid who doesn't make an egregious mistake dies as a healer/tank, there's no room to improve.
>Started playing FFXIV as Healer >Have a problem recently where tanks will just sprint through long corridors and not stop, giving me no chance to heal them because they run out of range and I can't cast by running. >The tank stops running at like an 1/8 health and promptly dies.
Am I missing something? I don't understand why they refuse to aggro single mobs or at least give time for healing.
I have literally never tried tanking. Why? Because tanks are always the ones complaining about everything, insisting on getting everything done quickly, bitching at people for insignificant errors that don't effect the outcome of the game.
It's not that I don't appreciate tanks, but it seems like being a tank is nothing but misery, and if I tanked I would instantly hate everyone on my team. I only heal and DPS.
>Doing LFR dungeons in ffxiv to grind exp >get queued into a lowish level dungeon I've done a billion times >pulling groups when the tank says to wait >killing adds with the dps during boss battles >spamming the quickly casted debuff remover spell with an annoyingly loud noise on everyone during down time >banter when tank bitches at me for pulling groups >constantly dpsing, letting tank get to 1/6 health before healing >3 player recommendations
WHM all day every day. I've nearly got the second recommendation achievement and I'm still like level 40. On a more serious note, I enjoy playing healer because its so intense when shit hits the fan.
>in a higher level dungeon I had just unlocked >on the final boss, a dragon that throws out constant circles of ice that stay dangerous and occasionally covers entires swathes of the arena in near instant kill ice blasts >tank is doing an excellent job, but one of the dps, a monk I think, keeps getting hit but the death ray >try my best to keep him alive, but he keeps walking into every area hazard >pop my spell speed cd and revive him during a fight I've never done before, not knowing if I've just fucked the tank >nearly running out of mana and mana resotriation cds by the end of the fight shits intense
Healer. If the group is good, It's nice and chill. If the rest of the group is shit, being a good healer makes the most difference, slightly more-so than tank.
Play DPS and the tank and healer are shit, everything will be horrible. Play tank and the healer and DPS is shit, people are dying all over the place. At least as healer you can kinda clutch heal through everything and baby everyone.
>>285750992 When you see this happening, do NOT cast anything until he's done pulling. In the meantime, pop PoM and DS and start healing as soon as it's safe. You may want to even swiftcast a cure II. If he dies before he's done pulling that's his fault for not having enough HP or popping cooldowns.
>>285751014 Yeah, it was. I don't see the point of your argument. I played during vanilla. I still think it's better to be constructive over being a dickhead. But whatever makes you feel better about yourself nerd.
>>285753115 >Crystal Tower is a fun set of 24 man raids Its puggable. Don't get me wrong its fun, but it is puggable and done with little to no effort. Which is why I didn't even mention it when I was talking about muh progression.
Usually DPS that use use fuckhuge weapons like greatswords or hammers. For all the things Tera did wrong, the berserker class isn't one of them.
However I like playing tanks and healers if they're different. Sword and board tanks are shit tier so I only play one if there's an evasion tank or a magic tank or whatever. Same with healers. Spamming heal is kind of lame, but I liked the Chloromancer in Rift.
>>285752845 Like I said, he's usually at 1/8 when he finally stops moving and I can actually heal, and by that time it's too late. I'm an SCH 45 so I don't have most the skills you're referring to. >>285752482 It's a level 45 and I need about 7 heals to bring someone back to full. Even if I sprint, I need to stop moving to cast heal and by then they're to far away.
>>285755248 The Combat is pretty trash, your attacks have next to no weight to them even with large weapons, so its like you're hitting a spongy wall. Larger fights are just you hitting with safe attacks until you need to dodge a massive hit etc.
I play every role, but lets face it guys. It's about learning a rotation, learning your class, knowing your gear, and paying fucking attention. This makes you better than about 90% Anyone who says that one class takes more skill than another is a fucking toolbag defending their class. That said, tanks and healers are nice for all kinds of reasons, and DPS are a dime a dozen, doesn't matter WHAT game you play. Also DPS are where you see the most retards, I think everyone can agree on this, so from there on, the choice is just what game you play. For me it's SWTOR, but I've played just about everything else. I like the Star Wars universe.
I like to play tanks but it gets tiresome having to carry people through dungeons.
I like to play healers but it gets frustrating being unable to really influence the fight, you're just keeping people alive long enough for them to kill. The green dragon fight in ICC was a nice alternate healing fight.
I like playing dps most now because you have the least responsibilities to others and influence fights the most. The faster shit dies the faster you win, it's that simple.
In an MMO I can only control/play one character/role so I would currently choose DPS because you control your own destiny in most cases.
