You are a game dev and you're told to follow these rules or be accused of reinforcing systems of oppression.
How do your respond?
I'd link them to pic related and tell them to pay me beforehand if they want preferential treatment.
Else they can go drop off the earth. And that's a promise.
There is something wrong if not following them gets you accused of reinforcing oppression.
But like, who even cares? Polygon? Kotaku? Who gives a shit what they think? AAA video games were going down the tubes long before there was any sort of driving force for female representation. These "rules" are perfectly acceptable.
Sure, just kickstart my 'Reskin of some characters with females' DLC for $800,000 (to cover the cost of new models/textures/rewrite/voiceacting). $10 gives you the DLC on launch - a $5 discount!
>How do your respond?
Not give a shit. Currently working on a project, if it conflicts with these rules in anyway, I don't care. I have a set vision for my game, and unless something gameplay related seems off, I don't care.
>animate female characters to move the way normal women move
What is a "normal woman"? Since when are feminists in the business of telling women what "normal" is?
>Avoid the Smurfette principle
>Have female characters of various body types
Dragon's Crown's artist still got crucified for his characters, though.
Fuck these mongoloids.
I am a slav.
I laugh it off, and perhaps, if I'm so inclined, might write up a detailed explanation why the way these demands are formulated and "enforced" is laughable, but that is really the degree to which I would care.
The good thing about living in the shittier part of the world is that you'll get a perspective on the shit that is happening more to the west.
Ignore the faggot, and make my game. I'll make it so offensive that journalists have to write about all the oppression. Then I'll get green lit on Steam because based Gaben and Goober Gators will support me. Just like Hatred :^)
I would politely ask them to follow me and walk to the front door. Once outside, I'd point them to the no soliciting sign and then walk back in. If I see them again, I'm informing security.
>Since when are feminists in the business of telling women what "normal" is?
Since their very conception? It is pretty much the fucking reason why the entire movement started. At least if we count feminism from the so called "second wave".
>don't over emphasize female characters' rear ends, not any more than you would the average male character's
I can't really say those 'rules' are unreasonable but I think game design is up to the creators and if they want giant giggly titty enemies that cum when you spank them then more power to them.
Just like if they want a beefy meaty hunky male protagonist with a huge crotch bulge thats fine too. If you don't like it MAKE YOUR OWN FUCKING GAME.
I reinforce systems of oppression because I know that you'll never be able to satisfy these people. I'll follow my vision and if I want a fucking boyband, I'll create a game about a fucking boyband! If it fits to have a female character then I'll include a female character. If I have a bigger cast I may include several female characters. If it fits my game I'll make the whole cast female and I'll predict that SJW will still attack the game because of the most ridiculous shit.
No dev ever should listen to a vocal minority that never played their games to begin with.
>women don't want to play/see highly sexualized women
>50 shades of grey is about a woman getting raped for a year and women buy the books on mass and flock to the theatre to watch a shitty movie about it and schlick, schlick in the cinema to the 20 minutes out of 100 minutes of sex scenes, just to get arrested for indecency.
>don't over emphasize female characters' rear ends, not any more than you would the average male character's
I couldn't agree more.
Tell them I make the game I want to play and if they wanted games to follow these rules they should make it themselves or pay me to do so.
I will, however, satisfy 3 and 5 by way of flat/cowtit delicious brown loli but I was going to do it anyways
I make an Action/Mech game with some RPG customization elements.
The game features green aliens fighting grey aliens in a binary planet system civil war. The aliens do not speak english, but communicate in a new language formed from digitized radio sfx and trumpets. The aliens pilot a variety of machines, including jets, saucers, and the mentioned mechs.
Plot twist is the two alien races being targeted by newly arrived Humans who wish to take over both planets, causing the Greens and the Greys to join forces against a common foe.
All the humans are huge, fat, and lazy like in Wall-E
>You HAVE to compromise on your character cast if you don't have a female character
>Fantasy design is NOT ALLOWED
>You HAVE TO ACCEPT that people are fat/thin/etc regardless of the context of the narrative - even if all the characters live in space and have perfect genetics and diet pills
>You are NOT allowed to make female characters better looking than me
>You HAVE TO ACCEPT that people are black/asian/indian regardless of the context of the narrative - even if it's set in medieval England
>Spend more time animating female characters so it doesn't upset me
>Nothing can ever be able to be misconstrued as sexual EVER, sexuality is bad
>It's okay for characters to be utter shitters as long as they're not female
Literally WAHH WAHH WAHH
Fuck this shit it's so annoying. It's not even funny anymore.
I treat everyone fairly in real life, but in videogames who gives a fuck. I just want some nice T&A to look at.
>How do you respond?
Laughter. Lots and lots of laughter. I know my target audience and I know the people pulling Stephen Tortilla's strings aren't ever going to like me anyway.
>So what exactly is wrong with 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8?
The very notion that you can make demands on what can or cannot be done apriory without any consideration for the context of the work.
yeah, all totally fine and welcome. If I want women with ridiculous bodies wearing sexy clothes, I'll go to instagram or some shit.
Plus, it's not like any doesn't want attractive people as game characters, just like...variety.
It is bad because it is some Fahrenheit 451 shit.
I can see it now
>all media must include pic related
>all media is the same
>no stories can be told because they might offend some guy who identifies as a shoggoth
>burn all old media
and the world lived happily ever after
I make the game I want to make, box-ticking of this type kills creative freedom of game developers.
They can fuck off and stop trying to bully me into sacrificing my creativity and freedom of expression.
Yeah, that part got me too. What do these landwhales know about how "normal women" move? They haven't exercised since highschool, and their idea of a workout is carrying that big heavy tub of icecream from the kitchen to their laptop so they can chow the fuck down while screaming at traitors to the Cause on twitter.
>average male character
>always tall and buff
>never overweight and have the looks as if he smells of old mustard
how come women dont realize that men in video games are always "sexualized"?
The mental image your post creates is amusing
>if I want women with ridiculous bodies wearing sexy clothes, I'll go to instagram or some shit
So you're saying women with ridiculous bodies wearing sexy clothing in videogames is okay because it actually does happen in the real world?
1. I'm all for having more leading women, my dick loves multiple females (thank you final fantasy XIII)
2. If I'm making a realistic game, sure that goes without saying, if I'm not making a realistic game, then I don't care. All I care about is consistency between designs.
3. If the story does not call for multiple body types then I don't give a shit about appealing to different body types just for diversity, fuck that.
4. That will depend if the specific character is supposed to be sexual - not all women are models who enjoy being sexy. So that'll just depend on the characters personalities in the story.
5. Again depends on the story. It worked great for Resident evil 5 since it took place in Africa. I'm never going to appeal to faggots who just want games diverse.
6. Sure that's just good allocation of resources and time spent animating.
7. Depends on how good the voice actor is and what sounds good coming out of the session. I'm not going to actually hurt the actors to get grunts. Besides manly grunts of pain can be sexy tooj.
8. I agree with this statement. I think if a 'progressive' game doesn't have female mobs like borderlands, it's fucking hypocritical.
>some Fahrenheit 451 shit.
Farenheit literally presents political correctness as THE origin of all the totalitarianistic shit in the first place. It is one of the most terrifyingly predictive books I've ever read.
Anita is right, we need more chubby women in vidya.
Second wave had flaws, especially in condemning women who did want to be just housewifes, but largely wasn't an issue. Third wave feminism is just victim mongering circlejerking that takes away from everything the first two did. They have no point, no goal, just some vague concept of equality that really just means special treatment.
I do what I'm told because I want my paycheck. I don't give a fuck if the publisher loses millions (and it will), I just leave the sinking ship with the rats and make games for sensible publishers
Thanks. Armchair activists piss me off. I used to volunteer as an abortion clinic escort, so people who just sit and "raise awareness" or "signal boost" or "get the word out" piss me off. If they believe in a cause, they should be out there giving actual real support and trying to make a real difference, not joining the ranks of the keyboard warriors whose only weapons are capslock and doxxing.
Why should every girl have to play as a non-sexualized prude? Many women LIKE playing sexualized characters. Sexuality is not the problem and feminists need to get over themselves.
nigga, can't tell you how many high school girls suddenly magically got on the rag as soon as they got within viewing distance of a gymnasium. If those bitches seen a treadmill since 4th grade I'd be surprised.
>make a vidya gaem with a diverse cast of female characters
>they're all fetish material
These people can try to change the rules all they want, but they'll never change the game. I'll see them at the fucking bank.
That's a male power fantasy, which is a meaningless throwaway phrase as technically being physically attractive is a fantasy of it's own regardless of gender.
You see it's meaningless term used in their arguments because while it is technically true it is also completely irrelevant because sexualized female characters could also be considered 'female power fantasies' (except where a character is additionally seen as being powerless/useless) as it is a common fantasy of both genders to be attractive to the opposite sex (or sometimes the same sex).
>Don't have just one female character
That seems like something dependent on the setting
>let alone one whose personality is "girl" or "woman"
What the fuck does that mean you chauvinist pig
>Lingerie is not armor
Yeah that whole "barbarians fighting in loincloths and animal hides" thing is pretty silly
>Have female characters of various body types
It's not my problem if you can't tell women apart
>Include more female characters of color
Do you have a problem with the melanin levels of my diverse cast of East Asians, Latinos, Inuits and Arabs? And what's your problem with men "of color"?
>Animate females to move the way normal women, soldiers or athletes would move
Men and women move very differently. All people move differently. We all have "various body types"
>Record female characters so their pain sounds painful, not orgasmic
That sounds like a personal problem
>Include female enemies, but don't sexualize those enemies
Since when are villains, or any character for that matter, not allowed to act seductively?
If you don't like what I'm making, maybe it's not for you and you should focus on something that you would enjoy.
Anyone remember the name of that game from Kickstarter with big and thick women?
They didn't have beer bellies except one I think and they were thick as fuck. Game was supposed to be Megaman like?
I will apply any principles and characters with my own work and you have no right to demand what I do.
>Second wave had flaws,
That's an understatement if I ever saw one.
>but largely wasn't an issue
Are you kidding me?
>Third wave feminism is just victim mongering circlejerking that takes away from everything the first two did
Third wave feminism started as an attempt to rationalize and tone down the absolute, MINGBOGGLINGLY INSANE SHIT that second wave feminism was, and for a while, it actually did a decent job at it. Then it got highjacked by mindless followers of Rebecca Walker.
But people really don't have a clue just how incredibly bad the second wave was. How insanely and deeply fucked up is the movement, inevitably, by it's very core. There was nothing ever actually good about feminism from the very propositions of second wave. And the shit we see today, however terrible, is nothing to the shit that was going on in the seventees and eightees.
Hey I'm working on a dumbshit garage game that easily checks 6 of those 8 points, and we could easily fulfill the remaing 2 if it ever goes anywhere.
And the game would trigger sarkeesians so hard despite not involving any kind of sex, rape, violence, or gore.
So, no, I don't think it's worth paying attention to this bullshit.
>Record female characters so their pain sounds painful, not orgasmic
They should listen to a female tennis match at least once. They aren't even in pain and they still moan every time they hit the ball.
second wave feminism main cause was equality in the workplace. That was the main goal and the succeeded. Sure there were issues, but it didn't really become a huge problem until third wave when
Not good enough, friend. But I implore you to check my
I hate this argument, because on big budget games in particular, the design isn't the product of some singular artistic vision. Pretty much the only guy nowadays being given boatloads of money to make weird, idiosyncratic games is Hideo Kojima. All the rest get focus tested and homogenized into mediocre vanilla gruel.
To me, the real issue is the idea that titillation is wrong, and that creating a sexually desirous character or any gender automatically equates to objectification. If the character is just a silent titbag, then by all means, critique away, but it's insane that a character like Bayonetta gets written off as harmful to women. She's one of the most genuinely cool, dynamic, powerful female action heroes I've ever seen represented in any form of media. She's never reduced to submission or dependent on the protection of a male counterpart, and there's no sense that her sexuality is out of her control.
Even if you include 2 women in a cast of 4 characters. One with a normal, fit body type and one some would call chubby. SJW would still call it fatshaming for the chubby one and sexualizing for the fit one. You'll never satisfy them.
Why should anyone do any of those things?
Who actually cares about this?
i think the complaint about the walking animations is that the walks are very exaggerated with the hip sway going out of control to the point of it looking like they are dislocating their hips.
Granted this means the devs will get to look at more women's asses so good for them if they do.
Yeah, and I don't really give a shit about them.
Just the ones other than number three seem like decent ideas in their own right. certainly nothing I'm going to give a shit about putting in the game if corporate wants it.
1) seems good for variety's sake.
2) If I have a game that is more grounded in reality, sure. Otherwise, fuck you.
4) I'll emphasize both a lot, thank you vary much.
5) Again, for variety's sake.
8) ok, but fuck you, artistic freedom.
Did you read the response of the dev of Dying Light after Anita called out their female character for being a damsel?
He made a blog post where he described the process in creating that character. They explicitely made her a strong female that fits the setting, a martial artist that can actually survive a zombie apocalypse. They've rewritten her several times over several months and were quite satisfied with her depiction in the end and all their work was destroyed by the icon of SJWs just by making a false statement about this character on television.
1. How do you make a personality "Girl"? Can't you accuse literally every female character ever made of this?
2. I very rarely actually see this. At least, outside of games that are sold on being sexy
3. Fuck you, if males have to be fit so do the women.
5. Burger King Kids Club principle
6. They already do thid
7. Turns out the two are one and the same
8. Succubi are fun though
You people are acting like this is a new law in a sports league that if the players or teams break they will be fined a million dollars or expelled from existence. it's like, a bunch of mild standards she recommends. nothing remotely new to humanity is being said here, and it's all fair game.
I mean, you can totally make a game that goes against these things, or make something like Fenix Rage or w/e that has nothing to do with them at all. it is what it is.
>Variety for the sake of variety
Speaking for creators everywhere, fuck off
There would be nothing wrong with these feminazi's and their beta boot licker servants to suggest idea's and and point out "problematic" things they see and just put it out there for game developers to consider whether they care or agree with them.
The problem is they expect and demand you listen to their drivel and obey it like gospel or else you will be punished and shunned, harassed if you don't
They need to get fucked and fuck off.
>second wave feminism main cause was equality in the workplace.
NO IT FUCKING WASN'T. The second wave feminsim was a direct application of Marxist theory of conflict onto entire social strata, replacing the word "working class" with "female". What they really succeeded was an utter and complete devaluation of traditional notion of femalehood to a point where women frequently express a sense of actual guilt when they consider family being higher priority than career resulting in the most drastic, and potentially most devastating social change in the modern western history.
It deeply and systematically rewrote just about every more significant value structure of our society, it pushed their complete misapropriation of the concept of genre to became an absolute norm of common folk understanding and lead to the most drastic increase of inter-personal hostility since fucking protestanism appeared and caused a religious schizm.
Seriously, FUCK this revisionistic bullshit. Go and read the actual articles and primary sources. Read fucking Beauvoir, read Friedan, Steimen, Greer, Morgan and tell me how it really was about equal opportunity employment. The fact that ONLY JUST NOW, the feminist theoreticist are actively distancing themselves from the shit of of late second wave is an entirely different issue. That is because it is retroactively so fucking embarrasing that they can't even admit they were a part of that.
The distinction between second wave feminism, and the sex-wars, is something that has been ONLY pushed in the last few years. And by the way has nothing to do with third wave feminism, which really came as a reaction to post-feminism, in the nineteens.
Second wave feminism got itself so utterly and absolutely discredited that they are currently revising and rewriting the terminology just to create some form of distance from it.
At no point ever was feminism about equality in employment was accidental to feminism.
I love 4chan boogiemen (boogiewomen?) it's like watching some get mad about "the damn communists" past 1963 or something hilariously out of whack like that.
>so that pain sounds painful not orgamisc
PREPARE YOUR PENISES:
WELCOME TO PLANET EARTH ANITA
Is it wrong that i find both bikini armour and practical armour sexy?
At least you'd be able to tell them apart better.
If I'd to make ends meet by working for a big publisher I'd just suck it up and do whatever the 'core' audience demands, or at least what the higher-ups think the core audience is.
If I started an independent project on my free time though, I'd be very vocal on the way I tell them to fuck off and proceed to make the game as offensive as possible. I mean, not the offense as the main focus, but pissing retards off is always fun.
All the while keeping my dox private. You really don't know how far these people are willing to go, they're mentally unstable after all. SJWs manage to be worse than the opposition.
If the game is "five burly white dudes on a team" it's probably not well designed anyway
Before I'd give my answer, I'd question their logic.
Why should I follow your rules if they inhibit my creativity? Why do these rules matter? Are people getting "oppressed" by things found in luxury products? Could you not argue that if someone has the means to reasonably buy and consume my wares, that they aren't being oppressed compared to around a billion citizens of the world?
Why is it that you get to decide what's "oppressive" and what's not? Why is it that you'll accuse me of oppression if I don't follow your rules?
Then, I would critique his rules:
1. Why does it matter if only one of my principal cast members is female? What if it makes sense in the storyline context, like in Saving Private Ryan?
2. Again, what does it matter what a female character willingly chooses to wear? What if it makes sense to wear this? Not all skimpily dressed characters are sex objects. Princess Sally from the Sonic games wears no clothes, and she wasn't designed to be a sex object.
3. What if it doesn't make sense? Why should I include a grotesquely overweight woman in, say, an elite force of marines, if such a physique would not make sense in context?
4. I can put fan service wherever I want. If it really matters, I'd just agree to a compromise wherein all characters of all genders are equally sexually objectified.
5. Why does this matter? How can you call yourself a crusader for equality if you can't look past a character's skin color?
6. What if this woman is not a normal woman? Chun-Li, for instance, is unusually physically fit for her age and demographic. Why would I animate her like a "normal" woman?
7. I would make the point that sex is painful for women, as well as pleasurable. In addition, I would raise the argument that the screams of orgiastic joy are often indistinguishable from the screams of agony in both genders.
8. Does it matter if I sexualize enemies? Is a sexualized enemy inherently worse than a non-sexualized one?
TLDR: Shut up.
Anita has every right to do her criticism, and she deserves the right to do it without harassment. Calling her a cunt or making rape threats actually strengthens her arguments and makes her voice seem more vital.
That being said, people also have the right to critique the content of her arguments, and do so without being slandered themselves. I think there a lot of people who, even if they don't agree are generally sympathetic to Anita's positions who are very much turned off by the shrill, absolutist nature of her and her fanbase. Adopting the same paranoiac sensibilities of MRAs isn't automatically validated because you're "on the right side".
>Stephen Tortillo interprets all sounds of female exertion/pain as "orgasmic"
I wonder what that says about him personally. If I get hit in the nuts you can bet I'm gonna let out an 'UGGGGHHH" like I just blasted the white rope over some nasty latina's face
...he's right. I'm not just saying this just because I'm a feminist, sexism aside those things are pretty bad from an artistic(for lack of a better word) standpoint.
