I know this has been discussed before, numerous times...but...how...?
why hasn't blizzard just released an HD diablo 2 LoD and ditched d3? They would be able to monitor it better than d2 currently is [implying they still give a shit about cheating in d3]
would anyone be up for some classic LoD run throughs? [No mules/bots/bought/dupes] in the future?
i have been picking up D2 again and I am still diamonds in PVP, but I want to reach out into different builds other than necros and sorcs; suggestions?
Story felt like it flopped. Could see leias mom betraying from mile away and there's nothing you can do about it plus she just gets chumped in the end anyway and you can't stop it. The auction house and the RNG with that game when it first dropped was fucking atrocious. It was impossible to actually get the gear you wanted without going to the auction house at least at one point and because of that Most shit was overpriced. Even on harder difficulties it was easy as fuck. The expansion made it a decrnt game and I enjoyed it after that but pre-exp D3 was trash.
diablo 2 was more or less a character crafting game with one set spec which had a skills and items as its goal
diablo 3 got rid of that by letting you switch up whenever you feel like so it was pointless to have more than 1 of the same class. there also wasn't a set item build for d3 characters since all you did was look for number upgrades. there were a few builds that did require specific items like the 0 CD zombie dog build, but wasnt enough.
RoS kind of fixed it with set pieces and legendaries giving special effects, but they're still nothing compared to d2 items especially the runewords
The only real D3 would be Median XL.
1.Z9 is best
They made a WoW-themed Diablo clone, or is it a Diablo-themed WoW clone?
Fans told them all along development, but they refused to listen, thinking they would know better because they're developers, and going as far as making fun of the people that would end up proving then wrong.
They shat on the fanbase, they shat on the universe, they shat on the lore, and simply ignored what made Diablo games so good.
I wish some actually decent people would work on Diablo 2 again, there's still a lot of potential behind it, enough to make an expansion that people would actually buy. It sure as hell would be better than more Diablo 3.
Amd see, that's kinda of where I felt inbetween on how d3 handled gear/character crafting.
While it was annoying to spend hours and hours and hours, and guess what many more hours (without bots) looking for that ONE piece you needed to make your build come together...it at least gave us something to hope for and keep the "just one more run" feeling going.
the weapon differences and how they affected skills absolutely killed d3 for me...weapon damage = skill damage? Retarded.
the lack of meaningful sets and uniques also made me slam my face into a pipe. (RoS tickled the idea, but nowherenear)
The skills are odd too...it's like they wanted to stop the "the only effective skill/stat choices for class X are Y, every other skill is useless", but instead omly made it more painfully obvious which skills you should be using on each class.
And is i just me, or did they just stop giving a shit about botters/cheaters way too early after release?
Did they not take a single hint from Diablo II?
why did they think 4 player lobbies were going to be the wave of the future?
I guess I'm just bitter because a classical gem lies dead in history, and few will remember it over it's half-assed sequel.
Plz D2 reboot
Not the developers of Diablo.
Maybe you forget, Blizzard North, aka Team Condor made Diablo.
Not that unholy actiblizz.
Fuck Vivendi for shutting Blizz North down.
Median XL is better than D2 imo, but I cut D2 some slack since it was created in a time where Median would have caused a computer to explode.
I just never could get the hang and the few people I did meet online were no help.
I got met with plenty of "rofl ples go back to d2" and people intentionally glitching out my quest within my first two hours online.
I was waiting patiently for sigma to get back into d2 median xl, then i found out that sigma is actually slowly being incorporated in through median patches... I am very very sad.
Why is that a horrible idea?
d2LoD was an absolute success in almost every single way (especially how far they had come from D2classic)
D3 honestly doesn't feel like a diablo game for me.
"WATCH OUT HERE COMES MY MAGE WITH A CLUB FLINGING HORRIBLE WOW-COPY SPELLS. WATCH OUT FOR MY MERC, HITS FOR 1/10TH MY MELEE DAMAGE."
d2classic fag here,
LoD was an 800x600 expansion for classic.
Blizzard north shutdown because bill roper left because he wanted to start work on diablo 3/warcraft 4 right away instead of wow.
One of those things that people never really noticed was how terrible ropers career was after blizzard
I've never been a fan of MXL myself. I mean it's nice, and it brings enough new things to make it feel like playing D2 for the first time again, but it drifts into what I find to be the worst aspects of D2.
I wish there was a mod that made the whole game feel like the first act, and more like D1, having you constantly scavenge what you can and adapt to ever changing situations. Not making it look like a clown shoved fireworks up his ass and where you're just running at the speed of light with epic gear.
Yeah, they do still happen, not sure when the next one is, it reset when I last played about 7 months ago... was it once a year or every 6 months?
i absolutely love ladder reset teams. a real shame they don't just run warden during them to slap MH and botters off the board.
>we'll never have a sequel that'll top d2, and its mods
>we'll never have a moddable d3
>On August 1, 2005, Blizzard Entertainment announced the closure of Blizzard North. A key reason for the closure was Blizzard North's poor development of what was to be Diablo III which did not meet the expectations of Vivendi.
imo median is an excellent balance between difficulty and comfort until the end game ( even then, there are still challenges)
Single player median with players 8 from the start will give you a run for your money.
Building wwsins that could withstand other barbs, smiters and ss druids was the best part of LoD.
And this was just a half-assed build with lower shadow lifers.
>Why was Diablo 3 so bad?
because it was no Diablo 2.
Gfg shanks. I remeber before I quit a few years back, I tried my shanks from classic for a Really, really shitty white druid pelt. I was high as shit on sleeping pills and quit for a looooong time after that.
>The ugliest art style I've seen in a long time, had to employ hardcore Sweetfx settings to make it passable
>WoW-style unlocks and everyone-gets-every-skill skills.
On the whole the game was terribly overproduced. They "polished" it from a bad-but-challenging D3 to a glorified slot machine with RoS.
The only redeemer is the feel of the combat, which is then usually ruined by the screen being a clusterfuck of enemies and effects.
Oh, and the AH wasn't the problem. Path of Exile would be perfectly alright if they implemented an AH today, just Blizzard being hacks designing around it and using it as a scapegoat
Simple: the game was designed for consoles. Everything from the skills to the lack of stat allocation pointed to the fact that they wanted to make the game for consoles from the very beginning.
I loved doing weird builds for pvp.
my favorite BM build was a paladin with the fcr bp below 200 (don't remember off the top of my head, 175?) maxed holy bolt, 20 pt prayer, 1 pt medi, 20 pt light res, 1pt holy shield and smite with smiter backup.
charge right ontop of a party member, namelock with holybolt, anything that wasn't a smiter or farcaster couldn't kill them, plus infinite mana/res
Also really, really loved my bear sorc and fire druid.
I just can't believe a company that has had so many great IPs has managed to fuck up every single one of the newer versions.
D3 = shit
Sc2 = boring/deathball
WoW = I don't even know where to begin
d3 is a great game, i got 1000 hours played, 700 of them in reaper of souls, vanilla d3 sucked, RoS has improved the game greatly along with continued patch support it is the best arpg on the market. The combat is great, the progression system is great, competing in grifts on hardcore ladder is fun as hell. The only problem with the game is the performance issues. If you think d3 is bad it's because you are playing softcore which is completely boring and pointless.
Some day I'll be able to play my PoE Necrowitch to her highest potential. Not on this shitty computer though. Back to my D2 Necro.
I tried to do a bearsorc. Way too hit-and-miss for me, since lightning damage has an absurdly low minimum. You either tapped the guy for 2 damage or OHKO'd him.
As for bm duels, I liked v/ts. Just click in the general area of someone to foh them, or switch to smite gear to charge kill, then nk with foh.
Don't get me wrong, but d3 hardcore is shitty. "GOOD LUCK KEEPING TRACK ON YOUR CHARACTER WITH ALL THESE FX. SOMETHING MOVED? SCREEN FLARE. SAMPLE TEXT."
at least in d2 you didn't need sunglasses to keep track of your screen.
I like the thrill of hardcore even if it is in a game like D3. But the skill unlock system with specific skills and runes locked at specific levels just kills it for me when I want to remake the char after death
Here's a talk from GDC by some dude from Blizzard explaining some stuff about D3 launch and how Reaper of Souls saved D3.
Worth a watch I guess
Yeah, my problen with d2 pvp when I last played were all the modders, being able to bm sorb AND hit all your breakpoints takes the whole premise of d2 aside and smashes it to a pulp.
really dealt the final blow for me.
Why was vanilla Diablo 2 so bad ?
No atmosphere compared to D1
Horrible skill and attribute system that was completely broken and had 0 balance
Horrible level design (everyone used maphack)
Hardcore is just too easy. You always play at a lower difficulty level so you don't die. Buhu. Boring and pointless.
In Softcore you do the exact same for GRs the difference is that you play at a much higher level since a death isnt the end of your char just the end of that one run.
consider suicidei beg you. i just cant stand the fcat that someone like you is living on this planet. please end your life
>people complained that D3 was going to be too easy
>meanwhile as a Barb I needed a total of 4 health pots to clear all of Normal Act 1
>hell was a complete joke with chars like Sorc or Pala
Can we please have a minute of silence for my items?
I invested countless thousands of hours into running singleplayer over and over and my computer shit itself and backup drive broke, all my everything gone.
I regret nothing but it stings.
I play on t6, i do 40+ grifts on hardcore i do not play on a lower setting so i dont die i have gone through 2 wizards this season and im on my third now everything you said is wrong
that was a flaw in d2, the classes were imba for PvE. Barbs just got shafted in PvE, where in PvP a well built barb could easily go 15-0 in a pub with minimal effort.
i would rather have slightly imba classes than classes that are all exactly alike though
>Pay to win
Simple, everyone stopped listening or giving a fuck after that. In all likelihood the gaming public at large will not trust Blizz again.
Only hardcore Blizz fans will give a shit. Everyone got onboard the hype train for D3 and it was a huge letdown.
Instead of retaining a new fanbase of millions, it dropped to hundreds of thousands in a span of days.
Then people asked, "Will you ever do an expansion?"
The shills answered no, they laughed like jackals at the maker of D2's comments nd shit. In general they behaved like a massive bag of dicks.
Cue some pricks stepping down or getting fired whatever you want to call it, they did an expansion and gave people what they wanted LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE DONE IN THE FIRST PLACE. But it was far too late, no one gave a fuck, hype train was dead.
All Blizz can do now is hope that WoW stays relevant/popular. Which it probably will.
that was my set up for farming ubers, had other shit in the stash for duelin
>Get Diablo 3 + Expansion
>First time playing since beta
>Play hardest difficulty available(Which is master until you hit level 70 and unlock Torment)
>Reach Level 70
>Din't die a single time
>Din't use a single potion
>Completely ignored any defensive or healing stats or spells.
I am not even good at videogames.
Surely you jest milady.
i never said it had to be balanced, i actually said the opposite.
imbalance was what made Diablo 2 PvP fun.
were light sorcs op? Yeah.
were smiters horribly imba towards melee duels? Of course.
But that's what made it fun. Knowing there is a sea of plebs using copy paste builds and having to either outclass or outskill them.
>ebotd thunder maul
>tfw had one of these on a Conc barb
Oh god, the good times that were had.
>tfw killing Hell Meph in 2-4 hits
>tfw pretty much destroying everything non-boss in 1-2 hits
Oh god yeah, enigma marked the end of an era, but I don't care, it opened up a lot of new builds for non-sorcs....but it also made botting 10000000x easier, leading to more and more bought gear.
Did you two girls bitch about killing shit too fast outside of raids on WoW as well, while fully decked out, gems in every slot, and enchants on everything?
TL1 is more like an updated Diablo 1
TL2 tries to be similar to D2, but just ends up being rather average.
>he has not played the new expansion
>he does not know they fired jay wilson
Decent, i absolutely hated TL2 because of the controls though.
>click and hold on a monster
>hover over the next monster without releasing the mouse button
>you stand there not attacking until you release and press the button again
It drove me completely insane.
this simply cannot be more accurate.
you're a fucking moron for having inaccurate opinions.
Nope, you can just hold your mouse button and sweep the screen like a retard left and right and you will keep attacking.
TL2 was really fucking weird, you could hold the mouse button and hover over a second enemy and as long as the first one was still alive you queued the attack action and started attacking the 2nd target after the first monster died.
But if you held the button on monster 1 and then targeted another monster AFTER the first one died you stopped attacking.
The inconsistency was beyond retarded, change targets a milisecond too late and you stand there in the middle of a mob not doing anything like a moron.
To be completely honest, the only thing I actually disliked about Diablo 3 was the hammy storyline and how it was constantly shoved in your face.
I don't want a cutscene everytime I fight a boss, and the only time they should be saying their lines is at the start of the fight.
I finished diablo 3 the other day
It wasnt as bad as you fuckers said
Not as good as 2, but still.
Was it worse at launch? I have the RpS version on 360
I couldn't take it past first 30 minutes and used [Key]+L/RMB to stand and control where and when you attack because with ranged character clicking and holding is even more infuriating. Worked out rather good actually but I still wish it was like in Diablo 3 with simultaneous running and attacking, though that would only make the game easier.
Bought d3 for pc at release, utter shit.
bought d3 for xbox360, better, but still shit.
bought RoS for PC, better than console, still wasn't enjoying it for the exact reasons in this thread. At that point I decided to let Actiblizzard go from my life, uninstalled d3, sc2 and WoW a week after I bought RoS.
D2 is by far a superior ARPG in everyway.
higher tier armor looked like a korean wow rip off. game was piss easy too. got it on console (inb4 playing on console) and played with a sorc and a barb. just picked what i found by playing the game, never died. passed the controller to my bro and he was fooling around by just button mashing and facerolled the whole area.. its just a bad game. people should feel guilty for playing this shit.
>2.0 and RoS fixed everything
Wait, what? They removed the retarded main stat/CHC/CD/+ele itemization and fixed the retarded scaling that made everything you did 1-69 completely pointless?
Holy shit when was that? I might actually go back to D3 now.
Thanks for the good news dude.
I liked d3, even at launch, I enjoyed smashing hundreds of enemies face in at once. But the problem comes in with how the items work, if you play a wizard you want int, strength and dex do nothing for you. With this combined with no stat points on level up it was hard to feel invested in a character because you could roll the same class and it would play exactly the same only with gear being the difference.
D2 having a few points moved around was massive, it was the difference of hitting or missing, blocking or dodging or getting your anus plowed. Skills felt more powerful as you leveled and invested points into it, the items felt amazing even when you take a step back and see how simple it is, combine it with the sockets and rune system it gives someone tons of customization, you become invested in the character because of how you built it.
At this point the only reason I even want to play d3 is because of how fun it is to rip through the huge packs, if you took those huge packs and applied it to d2 I wouldn't bother looking at D3 ever.
You just have insanely low standards compared to people that have been playing games for a long time, especially since you play on a console.
That's not a bad thing mind you, thanks to it you can even enjoy things like D3.
I wish i could enjoy all the games that come out these days.
I was actually playing Diablo 3 last night, I like it. Didn't play it at launch though, so I didn't really experience that shit.
Will Diablo 2 run on windows 8? I was thinking of getting the battlechest on amazon
I remember being Flagshipped. It was my first time crying "Its just alpha! they'll fix it" and so on and so forth.
Admittedly, I still look at my HG:L collectors box and want to play, but the game is just so fucked beyond reason that I can't. Could've been great.
Why didn't I listen to Agamemnon on the forums?
Read up about that yeah seems pc users did get royally fucked at launch, guess on most people it left a sour taste in the mouth
I started on the genesis but yeah I don't pc game so you're right. I even enjoyed the new cod for mindless fun.
to be honest... d3 lacked memes. memes are the future of gaming, lets make this clear here right of the bat. a game needs memes to survive, fresh ones at that. if the game is constantly updated with the dankest of memes it remains epic for the ages to come.
Diablo 3's story was trash. Diablo was turned into a pathetic Saturday morning cartoon villain, spouting one liners at every turn. They killed off Cain on the off chance that people might feel something about his death, not because it actually made any sort of sense to do so. Absolute trash.
The gameplay was pretty decent. Dodging around with the demon hunter setting up traps and shit was fun, but items were nothing but stacking mainstat to win. Item choices were expanded greatly in the expansion, but the shit tier storytelling remains.
Diablo 3 was fundamentally designed to appease the WoW market rather than actual fans of the Diablo series. The story was a joke. The game was so horrible and retainage was so bad that the devs made the move to turn it into an action/Gauntlet esque experience, rather than an ARPG. That is the current state of the game. As it is, it is a decent game, but it's still not Diablo. Anyone who claims that the expansion fixed it is too young to have actually understood the intricacies of D2.
D2 playerbase was actually outweighing the D3 playerbase at different intervals. That says A LOT about the game. Shills will say that this was due to bots, which is actually true now. This is because Blizzard has effectively disabled the Warden for D2 battle.net in an effort to finally kill the server loads, as they are bound to keep the servers running by law at this time.
FYI I still play Diablo 2 in competitive level capped (twinked) PVP. I still run every single ladder race. The game is literally timeless. It would be vibrant if the Warden returned; can you imagine if a new Expansion or content patch like ubers came out, though? Thousands and thousands of players would FLOOD the servers.
I play PoE now for the forum gold, and get on D2 for my ladder races an PvP scrims/matches. Guess I'll just keep amassing forum gold and wait for a real Diablo 3. Maybe someday it will come.
Leveling is pretty easy in MXL, anon.
And yeah thats a mod.
Max level is actually 120.
You actually probably will be somewhere around 90's when you leave Terror (aka nightmare) difficulty.
You should try it sometime anon, it's pretty enjoyable.
Though I'd recommend downloading 1.Z9, as it's probably the friendliest version of Median XL.
Also, grab PlugY for infinite stash and shared stash.
You'll need it.
>expansion for diablo 2
it might be 12 years late or something but if that ever happened then games like path of exile and torchlight can enjoy obscurity
what am i talking about? nobody cares about those games anyway!
Good on you man, keepin' the dream alive. I ran out of forum gold for private matches, and pub games are filled with "Wat i am legit fc, fuk u scrb i am #1. #1.#1.#1 i am...a god"
Diablo II is good, but its also the epithome of bad design.
>Lets give a class FREE DAMAGE THAT SCALES
>Lets design Defence/Attack/Hit values depending on overstacking
>Lets have the Prime evils in normal difficulty being severely over leveled, to gimp weapon damage
>Leveling past normal difficulty
>Hit chance versus spells
Those games would die with a new expansion. Yeah, I don't give a real fuck about PoE. Just no better alternatives, and the forum gold amassing/bartering is at least entertaining.
Fug publics nowadays. I do comp matches with other clans. We only do low stakes FG betting on matches, though, since FG is worth next to nothing compared to PoE values since the warden went down.
>THE STORY WAS GREAT BUT YOU GUYS HATE IT BECAUSE YOU HAD TO PLAY THE SAME QUESTS A HUNDRED TIMES
- LITERALLY Josh Mosqueira @ GDC 2015
Can't give you a citation. I've played D2 since its release, though, so I can recognize how the Warden fluctuates. Not to mention that I know many of the guys who are running the best bots on my realm. There was an update months ago that pushed out some "big" changes, but none of these guys got hit with any kind of bans. By turning Warden off, I mean they are no longer updating it fluidly. An anti-cheat or anti-bot is useless unless you patch it to attack newer bot systems. If they could tackle C3P0, they can tackle anything, but it's evident from playing that Blizzard is no longer actively targeting or managing the Warden as they did in previous years.
>What is merc
>What is enchant
>What is hybrid build
You clearly never even played the game, or you were never even talented at it. I can build a Meteorb/F-BallOrb sorc with minimalistic gear that can complete Hell with relative ease, and consistently MF with low faster cast rate. Don't blame the game because you suck.
>there were people all over forums viraling it, saying it would be the best game ever, and that we'd be stupid not to get a lifetime pass
>I almost bought one
>finally play the demo
>it's complete shit
Wow, were are these people now?
Probably viraling Star Citizen
it sort of made sense...there were items to lower enemy res before runewords
and it was meant to inspire teamwork, that is what D2 pVe was all about.
playing with friends to overcome to forces of hell.
I wasn't one of them, didn't have that kind of cash back in the day, but I made a point at sixteen to get rides from all of my friends to pick up like four copies of all four different preorders from Best Buy and such to have multiple armor dye kits, thinking they'd be worth something(The preorders were like $5).
Release day, Halloween '07 if memory serves, I stood outside of Best Buy to collect my collectors edition copy immediately. Went home, installed, had fun for a few hours, then I clipped through the floor and lost that character. Went to the forums and there was a war going on between pissed off players and damage controlling mods.
Oh right, and then a month later they announced some shitty stonehenge expansion and pretty much told the lifetime sub people toughsky shitsky.
I never got hyped again.
I literally just got mad because this might actually be someone's actual opinion.
No. You said sorc was mostly useless in Hell due to immunities, which is entirely untrue. In fact, it is one of the less gear-dependent classes, and can be incredibly effective with low tier garbage people would hand to you in a begging game.
Immunities aren't a bad design choice. They're an obstacle to overcome, plan a character for, or avoid. If you're too simple-minded to take an approach to defeat them that's available to you, that's not the game's problem.
I cometely agree with you.
Playing that lame game felt like it was hugely casualized and formed around the faggy WoW groups. The shitty color schemes, the crappy character involvement. It just felt like WoW 2.0.
It happened with SC2 as well. And as for the idiot thinking these were all different companies, it doesnt matter. Both D3 and SC2 were created with shitty WoW designs/project management.
Don't worry, mommy will burp you soon.
Torchlight was made by Fate devs along with former BlizzNorth devs, and a couple ex-Flagship Studios guys that worked on Mythos, aka "Flagship's other game that was actually much better than Hellgate but was aborted". That's why it was so popular.
>D3 sucks dick
>Torchlight sucks dick
> PoE sucks dick
>Grim Dawn sucks dick
>Fucking Van Helsing.. kinda decent
Why in the fuck is Van Helsing the only remotely decent ARPG in recent years? I play PoE because it's thriving but fuck, I even have to admit that it sucks dick. Why can no one just copypasta D2 and sell the motherfucker?
I was in the Mythos beta as well. I understand Hellgate was supposed to be some AAA juggernaut, but Mythos would've been a much better starting point for Flagship, which they could've used profits from to grow HG:L.
Unfortunately, EA and Namco/Bandai were involved along with Bill Roper on a power trip, so it had no hope. I can't even find playable demos of Mythos anymore.
In all honesty, both games really feel good to me. I like them both a lot. D3 feels a bit more fun to play in shorter intervals in adventure mode, and I've always enjoyed doing D2 when I have more time to kill. Then again, it might be cause I have a friend who I play D3 with and mostly play D2 solo.
I tried playing PoE but both D2 and D3 felt more satisfying to me, I'm not gonna call it bad though since it may very well be nostalgia.
My point was that people praise torchlight 2 for the "new" features it has comprared to diablo 2, but the truth is that the 90% of the game is the same as the creators previous games
I once heard it got bought by some company which made it F2P. It was online only so I don't think there's any offline/solo build.
From what I remember it changed name, so you won't find it easily.
>Necromancers are actually good guys, and were the one group of mages who were never corrupted
Necromancers in D2 were so awesome.
I don't think innovation was their point. TL1 is pretty much DIablo 1 with little improvements all across. TL2 is pretty much like Diablo 2 but with worse music, story, aesthetics and controls but with some small improvements in other places. That still kind of makes it better than Diablo 3.
>tfw you used to lvl a char to 91 in under 2 hours
There were plenty of mods when I was playing. Stat tweaks, convenience measures, pets, armor, other shit. It should be pretty cheap, so you don't lose that much. Pick top difficulty if you gonna play, it can be stupid easy towards the end if you don't.
Still probably could. No other game will ever match the feel of patch 1.13 release. A friend and I ran a character glitch rush business, actually. People would pay us forum gold to rush out their characters at level 1. We had trist running characters and everything. Then we'd take forges on top. After we amassed enough we were constantly farming ubers and making all sorts of crazy, maxed gear characters with our profits. Had a lot of good times. GOAT, possibly.
Am I making a dire mistake by putting all my points into raise dead and skeleton mastery? Only around 10 so far, but having my skelebros murder everything long before I see it is too good to pass up so far.
>PoE is everything a D2 fan could ever dream of.
But it isn't, anon. We had an established world and a story begging to be continued. Unfortunately, it was, but in a way reminiscent of Stephen King actually dying in that car crash and Stephanie Meyer stepping in to finish the "Dark Tower" series.
Think on that.
PoE is trash, but unfortunately it has a monopoly as it is the only vibrant and stable economy ARPG at the moment, so I'm stuck playing it for the FG even though I cringe in comparison to D2.
Raise skellington? No, you'll want them maxed as a summoner, but be mindful of your skills and have an alternative damage outlet because Duriel in Act 2 is the biggest summoner slapper ever.
They will literally never do that, ever. D2 was on life support four years after its successful expansion launch. The game was abandoned, it was lucky to ever get a major dupe/bug fix after it ran its course for months. Hacks and bots ran rampant and they basically stopped giving a shit period. The loss of blizzard north + the fact that WoW just came to and was incredibly successful, well, it just left Diablo II to its grave. That shitpile of a game they call a sequel is what you're stuck with for good.
Despite being abandoned, my god. The online was incredibly good, so easy to make friends, the game list and channels were fucking great when the game was alive. Single player isn't the same. There was just a lot of freedom in D2 when you played online.
Have you gone back to D2 after playing PoE? It has no endgame, the build diversity is like 0.1% of PoE's, the community is pretty much dead etc. D2 has definitely better music and atmosphere but that isn't enough compared to what PoE offers at the moment.
D2 actually went downhill after 1.10
I don't know if I ever played 1.13, I quit in 2010 after a long time playing the damn game. I was pretty notorious for scamming on d2jsp back in the day. Half the security features on that site were probably implemented because of me, I was such a little shit.
PoE has no endgame, it has a junky map system that makes leveling a pain in the ass. It literally costs you a chunk of currency (what you could make selling a 78 map) just to level at a halfway decent rate. Party play is basically non-existent and complete shit. D2's endgame was repetitive but at least it was active and relevant. PoE is an online only game, outside of trading, it may as well be single player.
1.13 was the pinnacle, really.
0.1% build diversity? The grid sphere is an example of over-designing. Just washed out. And if you're talking about endgame viable builds, D2 actually has more than PoE. To list some that I had:
MF find item barb
Find gold barb
Grizzly summon druid
Shapeshift physical druid
I'm not even going to go on. These were all individual characters that I beat Hell with. All with their own unique gear and skillsets.
Barbarian and Necromancer
Paladin, Sorceress and Assassin
Druid and Amazon
This is all based on fact, you can't prove me wrong
The golden age of ARPG's is gone, as well as the golden age of RPG's in general. All the DnD fans have left the industry and all we are left with is instant gratification wanting faggot millennials.
I want to play D3 so bad, but hate how over priced it still is after it's been out for years. 40 for the regular game and expansion, still. Every time it's gone on sale something came up.
I know this shit isn't worth the 80 bucks all together, though. D1 was my first online game.
That was just off the top of my head. So many more.
Also, thousands? Lol? You can't modify a skill and call it a new build. That's just boring and doesn't have any real identity.
Thats such horse shit. Why can't the same be said for D2? Oh wait, because we didn't have cinematic breaks so that you could wank all over the screen with your fancy bullshit.
Cutscenes, outside of the act breaks boiled down to ~5 seconds of catchphrasy dialog: "LOOKING FOR BAAL???", "NOT EVEN DEATH CAN SAVE YOU FROM ME!", "Tyriel was a FOOL!", and all the other memorable quotes that were just long enough to be memorable and short enough to not get irritating.
d2 was a pretty good balance between being casual enough that any average joe could pick up the basics without needing to have someone hold his hand, but would undoubtedly need help figuring out the more complex parts later on
my nine year old sister beat diablo 3 without any prior diablo experience, in 15~ hours. Too casual. No depth.
two builds can play similarly or even exactly the same but use completely different passives/items/support gems/forms of mitigation/damage scaling. The complexity of PoE enables it to have an incredible amount of viable builds.
I just can't play games like that, I play through them once usually and I'm done. With Diablo 1 I probably played it a dozen times, but it was my first online game back in the 90s.
It's a great series, I loved D1 and D2 (haven't tried 3 yet) but it's still playing the same thing over and over in slightly different ways.
Except countless way to combine skills into new builds, hundreds of unique items (not even counting runewords or some of the rare rolls), a predefined world, interesting story (if you wanted to follow it), a stat system that made sense. The list goes on.
>I am a total fucking scrub and never had the resources to build a better paladin.
This is you. You always knew who was a brainless retard in that game because they rolled with hammerdins.
I will give it to you that in PvE, barbarians were extremely limited in builds. It was either Concentrate (goldfindbarbs), WW, or frenzy. Possibly bear.
they make up for it in in strength, health and defense (Barb BO is a MUST in ladder reset teams)
>a stat system that made sense
>downloaded d2 again
>played single player for hours on end with skele necro
>steam roll everything
>put so much time into my skeles
>maggot lair hell
>big nig resurfaces beside me and one shots me
>haven't touched the game in 2 years now
PoE has no classes, shittier environments, shittier monsters(like a good fucking half are generic animals and humans), a obscenely complicated yet boring skill tree and terrible, crippling connectivity issues. Plus it's basically a game about grinding. While D2 was about grinding in the end as well it didn't feel nearly as bad.
Not the point. Listing it as some sort of pro (D3's stat system is self-explanatory too) is just silly.
Maggot lair and enclosed spaces are awful for a summoner. I ragequit several times because of random ice mob explosion from behind the walls which I could not predict.
It was just so awful.
On death ice enchanted monsters explode. They killed me so many times from outside of my view it's not even funny. I didn't even have low ice resist either.
>also, get more vitality
Pretty much all my stat points went into vitality.
>boss fights are much more enjoyable
none of the games really do bossfights well but D3 bossfights are literally nothing but "don't stand in the fire" with occasional minion spawns
at least diablo and duriel were different to fight
Fury druids were always fun. Just go into a game, hostile everyone and shift+attack the bridge entrance instantly killing anyone that came out was always hilarious.
Too bad they had to ban for D2loader around 2009 otherwise I'd probably be playing still.
In D2 you opened town portal, went to attack the boss until you depleted all potions and then came back to town to restock. Repeat until boss dies.
Normal mobs in nightmare and hell are much harder since they regenerate health.
I guess, but D3 bossfights have completely zero enjoyment for me. Maybe just because I was playing the highest difficulty setting so everything had retarded amounts of health.
RoS doesn't fix the STR AGI INT system that makes the game boring and uninteresting. not to mention being stuck with the 5 skills you can chose at any time. There are only so many passive things you can add to items that make them feel interesting, and most of them are just adding damage that doesn't really change the way you play the game.
I wanted to use embermage because summoning lots of imps and shooting lasers was kind of fun in TL1. Started same on TL2, looked at skill tree and it's all boring shit with occasional minor power-up. Decide to go with fire because fire is how alternative spelling for cool. Still had to pick a bunch of shit from other categories because some spells are pretty much mandatory. But really all even need is evade bullshit and giant damage from distance bullshit. Spammed giant fire bomb almost exclusively throughout the game and pretty much steamrolled it on veteran.
Also fuck their loot. I spent most of the game in armor that dropped in the zone right after the starting one because there simply was nothing better. Imagine how disappointing is when for more than half of game, every time you open giant, majestic boss chest, there's nothing there but trash. Never got a legendary either and best items I had whole game were nearly gifted to my by some dude early on in first act who had his first elite playthrogh.
>Always play zealer
>Get the best shit in the game
>Play since launch
>Iron maiden is removed from act 4
>Feel empty inside and stop playing
It was my only weakness.
>Iron Maiden drops
>Merc races into mobs, dies instantly, and you're surrounded
>Botch switch to leap
the gore was bad not gruesome enough, although the physics are great.
The enemies blink when you hit them this makes dificult level full of adds look like a rave.
the monster design whent from realistics anatomical models, to a more comic book darksiders style (azmodan)
Serious question: how can anyone enjoy PoE's combat?
It's fucking horrible. It just feels so stiff and clunky. I'm not even talking about with the dysync, that's a whole different issue. But the game just isn't fun to play. Shit on D3 all you want because of the horrible launch decisions, but it's has smooth gameplay that doesn't make me want to quit every 30 minutes out of boredom. Granted, last I played PoE was a year or so ago, but I can't imagine the core "feel" has changed.
>You actually probably will be somewhere around 90's when you leave Terror (aka nightmare) difficulty.
If you do a few cow or baal runs you will be level 120 before you actually kill Baal on the second difficulty (at least with players 8)
That said, the real game starts on the last difficulty, everything before that is just warming up
I don't know. Hell, playing a game with ACTUAL good combat like MGR or Serious Sam makes all these diablo games look like shit, but at least diablo 2 has the excuse of being 15 years old.
It's still a better game than D3
It has a functioning economy, trade, maps as items are fun, and certain builds actually do feel very good to play. The issue is that to get any reward out of combat in PoE, you have to first git gud and get links to amp up and equip proper skills/modifiers.
Granted even with all of this PoE sucks. The grid sphere is uninspiring and overdone, and characters just don't feel like individuals because you can reach into other trees. But I play it for the forum gold and for the fact that it's actually an ARPG, whereas D3 is an uninspiringly mediocre action game branded with a Diablo sticker.
D3 with 2.2 is a fun game. The game has been pretty shit, but after RoS D3 has really pulled itself out of its own ass.
Mainly because Jwilson left.
>kill a zombie with a crit in PoE
>it goes "AAAArrggjhhh..." and kinda falls over
>kill a zombie with a crit in D3
>its skeleton goes flying into orbit
If there's one thing D3 has always done right, it's making a game that feels good to play.
D3 was an objectively bad game when it came out. RoS made it an objectively good game. Anyone that still calls it shit is either has Chris from GGG's cock in their mouth or one of those "lol blizz are jews XD" shitposters.
Have a good day.
D2 still feels better. It sounds like a nitpick but I remember being really annoyed by the weapon hit sound. In D2 it was a meaty Thwack, but in D3 it's more of a sharp Chik. Sounds minor but now play it every single second and it starts to really bother you, it doesn't feel good.
Yeah okay anon
Enjoy your Gauntlet: Diablo
Loot still sucks. No trade. No social aspect. Oh, is PvP there? Nope. Love those vibrant bright colors (not.) I'd actually pay to never experience the story ever again.
I have no clue why I bought RoS but I feel foolish as fuck
Generated maps weren't good till quite a bit of patches, classes aren't that great. No Necro, no Druid still.
Took many patches to get a decent buildup of interesting legendary/sets affixes.
I still think as far as combat goes its more fun to play than POE
i want to drive my hilt down your throat until you choke no homo :^)
I've been having a lot of fun with it since the expansion and the introduction of seasons and new gear. But the story was absolute crap and the initial stretch of campaign uninspired in design. Also, it didn't tickle the nostalgia of D2 faggots. As someone who never played D2 before trying D3, let me tell you, D2 is not that good.
You can't play it until you go through that fucking god awful abomination. The story's so fucking shit and the progression design so lame they had to make a mode that eliminates the bullshit. Uninspiring loot, no trade, no social aspect, no PVP, and a story so shit you have to avoid it. Meh, just no reason to even play this garbage.
the people who grew up with diablo 1 and 2... grew up
diablo 1 and 2 were ok games with just enough content to keep us playing, but there was more to the experience for a lot of us... the economy, the gamehacking scene, the exploitation of game mechanics or scamming players, battle.net chat was its own animal, RMT, and of course modding
these were fun times and a lot of people had fond memories, which gave the games a legacy, and free marketing... plus the games have been supported by RMT for a while so it's even harder for them to fail
new blizzard puts out a pretty good product and otherwise milks the IPs and takes advantage of the legendary status of the various characters and shit in the lore
blizzard games get objectively better with every release but the soul gets sucked right out of them
You can't play adventure without playing the story first, dumbfuck.
Chugalugalugaluga pooop pooooo
>RoS made it an objectively good game
Sure thing retard
It took them 2 years to turn it into a decent brainless timesink you can play while listening to music or a podcast
RIP in peace /v/.net
No it doesn't you only pick primary stat which all do the same, primary damage source, physical or magical , melee or ranged and HP or shield.
Then all plays the exact same, only variation is going summons which are useless
WOW LOOK AT ALL THAT VARIETY HOLY SHIT, DIABLO 2 A SHIT
WHEN THE NEXT PATCH COMES OUT THERE'LL BE A HANDFUL MORE VIABLE BUILDS TOO, THAT'S FUCKING CRAZY!
>diablo 3 flopped
It sold shit loads, broke several game sales records. Reaper of souls sold shit loads too and currently the game is very popular and has extremely large playerbase.
How the fuck did it exactly flop?
>O wait you probably dont have the game.
Thanks for the laugh retard.
I really do agree.
Get fucked. Popular streamers stop playing, the endgame consists of "Run this rift until you find a power and conduit beacon so you have a chance at rank 1". There's no trading. barely any build variety and on top of that the goddamn loot is atrocious. It fails as a successor to Diablo 2.
Even the goddamn devs themselves said it's a game you play when waiting for something in world of warcraft.
>this game is shit
>yeah but did you play it?
>maybe you shouldn't talk shit about games you never played and go buy it
>this game is shit
>yeah but did you play it?
>maybe you shouldn't have bought it then, you brought this upon yourself
This is what could be called "deflection".
Numerous reasons but I'll try to get to the core of the issue for you.
It's basically Blizzard's new direction after the WoW era. They want to dumb down everything, make things simple. CASUAL, KEEP IT CASUAL, MAKE EVERYTHING STREAMLINED. This means Diablo 3 has straightforward unimaginative builds while Blizzard feels compelled to balance it like it's an MMO as well. That means anything that might seem broken gets nerfed to shit. Blizzard has a bad case of casualism.
>tfw you will never play d3 offline
>tfw you will be always deemed to let everyone know whenever you're connected to blizzard servers
>tfw you will always be victim of horrible lag due to either ISP crapping itself or blizzard servers crapping themselves
>tfw that sick escape you just pulled from those retarded infinite stun elites is nullified because lol latency
>tfw hoarder and small stash
>tfw too scared of internet bullshit to try hardcore runs
>tfw desynched healthbars
>tfw shit luck at drops
>tfw cant even cheese the shit gear by scourging retards in the AH
I really tried to play, I really did, I even leveled to 60 and passed torment 2 one character of each race going through a lot of pain and exasperation for each, but this online singleplayer bullshit is unexcusable
Most the problems the game has could be fixed by going fucking offline, but no, fuck you, go through the hoop or you dont get to play, its for your own good, those evil hackers and cheaters will ruin your game, they said, these forced updates are good for you, they said.
I give up, there is a single thing that could redeem this game for me, and I dont see them doing it in the next 10 years
Have fun in my place, I'm unable to
>Every element of the game is streamlined or simplified
>Multiplayer limited to 4 players
>Skill system is like a loadout system in Call of Duty or any modern multiplayer shooter
>Limited to only 6 active skills, less keybindings in general
>Areas and dungeons are very linear and geometrically simple
>Story is completely railroaded and focused around dumb spectacle setpieces
>Basically plays and is designed like a top down brawler for consoles
What gave it away?
I never beat D2 but I've beaten D3 everytime there was a big update. It's a fun mindless grind for a while, more fun on hardcore and higher difficulties. POE was fun too, but I was too lazy to keep up with the new tree constantly and knowing the meta being the only way to get far in hardcore.
I should play D2 sometime, would pirating it do it justice, or are more players important?
>no unlocking quests
>only 4 players to a game
>no skill tree customization
>MMO items in an ARPG
>story is really bad/bland and does not feel anything like d1 or d2--d1 at least had a decent story and fantastic dialogue and d2's was still good for an ARPG
>story is very linear and often times annoying as fuck with all the baddies constantly trying to converse with me
>boring level design
maybe you prefer one for insecure fags
Real Money Auction.
This is wat you've got when you base a game with this sistem. They tried to adjust it, but it was way too late.
Also, how can you fuck up a skill system when an indie developer create a ne wone much, much better?
cuz he's a little faggot fuck that purchased a duped out pair of boots from a chink with real money and didn't realize he could upgrade/was afraid to upgrade in the event that his dupe might drop
>not being close friends with someone who constantly exploited dupes.
There's two major reasons as to why it failed:
1. The in-game economy
2. The gaming community as a whole
The game debuted with an auction house system. This was bad for two reasons. First off, it fueled botting and paying for items. No, that wasn't because of the RMAH, as that sort of thing happened in Diablo 2 as well. For example, I personally spent some 50$ on average buying things in every ladder season. Well, really, it does still happen because people are lazy and Blizzard doesn't do enough to stop it.
Secondly, there were simply too many players, and too many botters. There were simply too many items on the auction house in general, which made it so that most items were worthless while only the great items were worth money. In a game with an economy based around trading rather than 'buying', the bots don't fuck things up this bad.
The community, then again, is a problem in the sense that people simply look at games from a completely different angle. Frankly, I'm not sure if this has always been the case, but 'theorycrafting' (which only became a construct under that name after WoW) has kind of destroyed any PvE game when it comes to character building - and there's no PvP in Diablo III. In PvE, in the case of Diablo III, all you need to do is minmax DPS. As such, there's always that one best build when it comes to DPS output. Variety is dead because if you want to contest the leaderboards, you have to stick to that one build, and that's what most people will end up doing.
In PvP it's not always just about DPS, and there's a lot more variety. You also need mobility, survivability and whatnot. To an extent, of course, you also need these in PvE, but in PvP it's not just about dishing damage, but also being able to hit with that damage.
As such, you could also say it's about the lack of PvP. Had it been just about dishing out damage, everyone would have been farming gear with a blizzard sorc or a hammerdin and quit after getting it.
