In the same way God works in mysterious ways, I'm sure Gaben too. We may be confused and upset about charging for mods, but I'm sure he has a good reason for it and we just are unable to understand it.
Probably is Half-Life 3 related; that game can't be cheap to develop.
>>292247201 Why do you fuckers always post "Now that the dust has settled" posts when shit is still current events?
Like, do you just forget about them when the dust ACTUALLY settles? Can you seriously not wait one singular day after Dark Souls 2 comes out to say "Now that the dust has settled isn't this the best game ever made?"
It's not. It's not, Gary. It's not even close to the best game ever made.
Anyone who had his opinion of Gabe changed by this thing, is an overreacting idiot.
If you should hate someone now, hate yourself. You have proven that you're a shit-eating monkey who believes he's entitled to get EVERYTHING FOR FREE RIGHT NOW!!!!
Modders have a right to monetize their work if they want to, and you have absolutely nothing to say against that. None of you can ever give any valid arguments against it, it's all just "hurrrr greedy jew kikes"
>>292248334 Your argument completely breaks apart since its not a physical product. And the cheese is made by a random guy for free with no financial contribution to its creation. It also may or may not give you food poisoning. So shell out faggot; buy this questionable digital content made by some greedy neckbeard
>>292247201 I honestly think he is trying to (and failing to) change gaming for the better. The thing is he and the rest of the company have been losing touch, yet they are stubborn as always. I think their intention was to give modders some type of financial cushion so that they could continue their hobby. A lot of modders end up leaving the community either because A: They need to support themselves, and modding was just a hobby, or B: They were talented enough to get a job as an actual game developer, which they immediately jumped at the opportunity because what modder wouldn't want to make a living designing video games? Still, this all falls flat on its face because 25% and steambux only. Though I have a feeling Bethesda is partially to blame for that.
Maybe because of the backlash, they will, for the first time ever, pull back. But I don't see that happening. What I do see happening, at the absolute worst, is steam workshop becoming more and more obscure as all the greedy modders who are only in it for the money migrate to Steam to make a profit off of it, resulting in an overall loss of quality. While the rest of the modding community can continue releasing content wherever they like.
The vocal minority has whined like entitled children. Now let's move on.
Oh and to all the people going full "I WILL NOT USE STEAM ANYMORE", nobody believes you and you're probably logged in your account right now. Nobody owes you shit of any sort. If you're too poor to pay for modder's work, then just pirate or use the free stuffs. What are you going to do anyway? Use GOG like their marketer is trying to push right now, taking advantage of GabeN ONLY mistep? Or origin? Is this what loyalty is to you people?
You just disgust me, it's just fucking video games, have a walk or something, have fresh air.
>>292249014 I can see this too. Also mod piracy isn't something that can be blocked either. It'll be all too common. Honestly a pay what you want or donate option would've solved it. But I feel this is valve's retarded business sense combined with bethesda greed.
>>292249105 This guy's whats wrong with the whole situation. Throwing around "ENTITLED" like a fucking idiot. These are the faggots that caused the industry to degenerate to on-disc DLC and horrific business practice.
>>292249376 Yeah, I'm fucking wrong for spending money in the industry instead of wanting everything for free. You're still probably a kid, but you'll see when you'll work if you'd like people to tell you you should work for free. THIS guy here >>292249456 is everything that's wrong nowadays. He is shameless and can't even recognize all the good valve has brought on PC (you know, little things like SINGLEHANDELY SAVED PC GAMING).
I don't see whats so great about him. I can't say anything about Team fortress that hasn't already been said, Portal 2 is one of the worst games I have ever seen in my life, and people claim they've been waiting too long for another Half-life while I've been waiting for something else (I won't say it because it's not vidya related) since 2002.
>>292249578 >DLC sold in shitty sweatshop-produced pussy repellents >rehashing pokemon yearly and selling it in 2 separate versions with exclusive content >selling underpowered consoles on huge profit >selling them again but with overclocked CPU later in their life >have disc drive but don't support video playback in any way(imb4 GAYMES - if I have fucking brick near my TV, I would love to use it for other things than just gaming)
And the best >be nintendo >pander to casuals >when casuals left say you're all about "core audience" with straight faces >"core audience" believes you
>>292247857 Which no one is forcing you to buy Mods that you can pirate if you don't want give money legally to the author, the company that made the game and the best system for buying games and playing online.
>>292249578 >amiibos >abandoning your core market for a blue ocean casual audience with the Wii >casualizing nearly all of your mainline franchises to pathetically easy levels >going mobile with a Jew app compan >last direct was bombarded with DLC
The Wii marked the creative deathbed of Nintendo. The machine is still working but the soul left years ago.
>>292249014 >Paid in Steambucks They're not. It clearly states on the Q&A page on getting money from your stuff on Steam that you can set it up that it goes directly to your bank account. If they couldn't, then even the modders would throw a fit.
The problem I see is companies will get lazier at making properly functioning games with content in them. Teams will get smaller as that work can be done for cheaper by outsourcing that work to modders.
>>292249856 DLC is fine as long as it's separate from the original game. Having locked DLC that's already on your computer is bullshit and should have been available from the start or kept separate. It'd be like buying a house with a room in it with no way in and had you spent the extra money they would have put the door in, but if you try to access it without paying them YOU'RE a bad person.
>>292249856 Are you autistic. Are you actually autistic. Because I work buddy. And I also have a hobby; photography. I don't try and sell my photos. I share them. I get paid for my job. Not my hobby. Modders should get a fucking job and stop being whiny sluts.
Valve has been creatively bankrupt for years now. They're one of the proportionally richest companies in the business yet do not create games for years now. Even the mods they assimilated and ported onto source are terribly maintained. Even looking back at their track record it's nowhere near impressive aside from HL1. The question is why they were so hyped all along when they never really produced classic titles. Portal was a tech demo, TF2 was a casualized multiplayer shooter with 5 maps, Dota 2 and CS: GO aren't even theirs, L4D was mediocre. I think it's their quirky writing and voice acting and LE GABEN XDD STEAM SALES that stand for the majority of their reputation.
I never understood what the obsession was with him anyway, he dropped out of college and he runs a company. Why did that make him special? A entire team created those games and run Steam it's not like he just magically shit it all out of his ass one night.
>>292251717 >14 year olds looking up copyright law on wikipedia for 5 minutes and acting like they know a single fucking thing EULA's already have strong precedence in courts as legally enforceable. there's nothing stopping what steam is doing
>>292247201 He's a fucking business man. All of the worship for him or any other company is fucking stupid. They make goods or services. We pay for those goods or services. If we like what we get, we pay for more. That's the extent of you're relationship with any dev, and if you think otherwise about any of them you're fucking retarded. And if you think this reflects negatively on any dev, you're fucking retarded.
>>292247201 RIP I get that valve is a business and they want to make money but are they that hard up for cash that they won't admit the mods are a shit idea? they already cornered the market on PC gaming while having tons of love from fans. Why would they risk damaging there reputation over some more money?
>>292252659 >why would someone go to a more populated site full of normalfags and shitty mods instead of an anonymous image board where they wojld get shat on with the force of a thousand suns are you that stupid, m8?
>>292252659 on reddit he was getting worthwhile discussion from others because the voting system actually works in those situations, believe it or not. on 4chan it would just be a myriad of shitposts and cocksucking
>>292252568 By making it about money. Mods will be more shit as more people try to make a quick buck, and games will be more shit because they don't have to try anymore.
Look at how many mods exist because of how shit skyrim is. SkyUI is one of the most recommended mods of all time, and it only exists because the default one is so goddamn horrible. Now SkyUI is for sale instead of free, and Bethesda is making more money DIRECTLY BECAUSE of how shit the actual game was.
I just don't see the point of paying for mods. At that point, they just become DLC. DLC that is far too numerous, has a pretty good chance of not working and straight up breaking your game, has a good chance of not even working with other "DLC", and aren't even remotely attached to the original developers. At that point, why would I drop cash on it? For what reason? If a motherfucker buys himself a nice shiny new mod and it turns out the shit doesn't work on his rig, slows his game to a crawl, and breaks all the other mods he bought; does that nigga get a full refund?
>>292253072 >Mods will be more shit as more people try to make a quick buck, and games will be more shit because they don't have to try anymore. You are blaming valve for a lack of ethics within the modding community.
>>292253362 Tim Cain looks younger. Also, old age happens to everybody. It will happen to you too. It has already happened to me, I wish I could eat 2 pizzas and a bottle of coke for dinner again without wanting to puke my guts.
>>292253167 that's one of the main problems as a consumer you are entitled to a working product you a buy a car and it doesn't work than you get a refund mod's might not work or not work well with other mods but you won't know until you try. But now you have to buy them in most cases and Valve ain't gonna regulate that shit. They should have stuck to selling hats, hats always work and are regulated. Mods aren't
Because the community that used TES mods donated more than other games.
It makes me mad every time i see someone posting this shit like they have a point the the community just was free as could be and had no monterey aspirations ever. Ill tell you right now they wouldn't be modding for the most disappointing TES to date with the least flexible modtools ever for a TES as well.
>>292253153 Sort of agree with this. 4chan was never really meant for famous people to use tripcode and ask questions. It was meant for famous people to lurk among us as equals. I dont really care if devs even go to this site or not.
>>292254021 What GPU/Driver? L4D2 runs fine on my macine. The only game I've tried so far that ran like absolute ass was The Talos Principle, for some reason it doesn't like OpenGL at all, runs bad on OS X too.
>>292255146 >If they are not making it for money, then why does the player base for the game matter m8 that wasn't my point. i'm saying a game with 10 players is gonna have fewer players become modders than a game with 100,000 players. that's why you see so many skyrim modders compared to oblivion modders.
>If you were doing modding exclusively as a hobby logically you would be using the best tool, when you're making mods for a game because you want to improve that game, you don't get to choose what fucking tool you want. modders don't just roam around making mods for shitty games they hate just because that game has the best mod tools. they make mods for the games they play.
He was always a meme developer, literally only popular/known because he was fat, that was it. Then, it devolved into a personality worshipping cult. And we all know what happens when you follow a person because of their name instead of their deeds.
>>292247201 I have no issue with the payed modding thing, except maybe the percents could use adjusting.
You can still offer mods for free if you want, or a pay whatever you want option, and if you offer it for money then you, valve, and the publisher of the game all get money for the sale.
The percents might need some adjusting, but I think its pretty cool that this is possible. Modders do a shitload of work and rarely got rewarded for it outside of fringe cases like dota and counterstrike and all that good stuff.
It's what you sperglords deserve for romanticising business people/developer/publisher/obese business people so what did you expect...
Even if I'm satisfied with a product or service I'm always in doubt or do not sperg out about it.
Don't be like cucks from neogaf who talk about the most trivial shit no normal consumer should ever care about at all. Imagine a group of really boring people talking about Media Create, NPD sales numbers. People who don't own stocks or are in any way, shape or form involved in the videogame industry other than owning a mass produced entertainment product; the world's most boring people who care way too much about multi-billion dollar corporations.
If you follow these rules you won't ever be disappointed.
>>292247201 I've seen several interviews of him talking and enjoyed what he had to say. He definitely is a smart person. However, I realize now that I misinterpreted what he said on a few topics. For example, I once heard about him speaking very highly of user created content and how it's going to get bigger and bigger. I agreed because I know that there's so much potential for these games that allow players to create their own content from Starcraft custom maps to LBP to rom hacks. But now I know he spoke of it from a business point of view where you can just get people to make content in Dota and now mods and make entire profit from them. Content like simple models, etc. and not something that is essentially a brand new game inside of a game, such as Warcraft 3 custom maps. He was talking about nickle and dime-ing while I thought he spoke of how to improve the quality of games as a whole.
Still I believe that tons of people are overreacting to this entire mod thing. That said I agree with them that how Valve is handling paid mods is just a greedy cash grab, and same goes for most modders who have posted their content on Steam, short of the joke ones. Paid mods is just the next retarded idea steam has pushed out and so long future games aren't made with the intent of mods being paid only with a cut of the revenue going to the publisher we should be fine.
>>292248231 >Anyone who had his opinion of Gabe changed by this thing, is an overreacting idiot. Personally, my opinion did change but as pointed out, it's because I discovered that I misinterpreted his entire mindset on user created content. I agree with you that most people who are changing their minds are idiots though.
I don't know if he was always an asshole and was just way better at hiding it or if that's a recent development, but fuck him. Steam is garbage now and he's as greedy as scum like Comcast and oil companies. Between this paid mods bullshit and him saying that they have not been and are not working on Half Life 3 with no plans to do so at all are too much to put up with.
>>292263042 >almost all of them self reported >Chile, Peru, and Bolivia implying they have 6 inches or over I don't buy it for one fucking second. I've been to those countries, everyone there is 5 feet tall or shorter. They're fucking midgets, no way are they 6 inch average.
>>292247201 A man that gets all the shit Valve does even though its a large company and Gaben is not even working as a boss, (even though he is the owner) but a fellow worker because of the strange company structure everybody should google out. (Google: Valve has no bosses)
Media face, easy to like, great success story as a background, smart and handsome. Fatty fat fat where is HL3 I can meme too.
>>292264005 It's the same reason why Nintendo babbies turned Reggie into a meme mascot even though he's nothing more than a businessman and PR person. They think these guys are their friend because they are children, possibly even autistic, and can't comprehend that people working in the video game industry at the executive level probably don't actually give a shit what the product is because they're old and don't play these games anyway. If Gabe ever played or loved video games, that was long, long time ago. It should be evidence enough that he doesn't now since his company doesn't even make them anymore.
>>292247367 >have fun trading 2.33 metal for keys >stop trading when it inflated to 5.33 >come back last month just to check on things >keys are worth 17.33 How people still trade is beyond me. This inflation puts the Soviets to shame.
>>292247201 He's the Nick Clegg of the gaming industry.
He sat back and pretended to be this friendly face, but he was a greedy cunt like every other CEO.
He's been showing his hand for years, though. The slow monopolisation of PC gaming, the fact Valve only ever release cash cows now and the F2P re-release of TF2 were all running up to this paid mod bullshit.
Good points: - Excellent predictor of industry trends - VR shit is cool - Nice beard - Peddles cheap games - Supports linux and FOSS
Bad points - Supports intrusive DRM - HL2ep2 is almost 8 years old - Attempts to circumvent EU rights on returns - Approved paid mods in the workshop - Holds up a mirror to the community and allows us to see the inner jew
>>292262219 This. Historically speaking any business can go full retard at any time. The quality of developers or PR people do not govern the actions of a entire company. Management from the past can be removed with Sales and Marketing people who gives no shit about about the past consumer. When Companies do all of these they are looking at it from the perspective from supplies.
In the eyes of a company paid mod, Evolve-tier cash shops, and the other shit that they are doing to you makes. From perspective from a supplier, all of those cash grabs make senses to a company. You have to be a massive cuck to put your rights as a consumer over the corporations when you don't work for them or have stocks for them. . Brand Loyalty will always be a cancer.
never saw him or valve as gods or anything autistic like that I mean I don't thank cox for giving me HBO for free every year I bitch at them for their shitty cable boxes or thank my local pizza joint for selling great barbecue pizza when it's the cooks who make it not the franchise itself
Prior to the Industrial revolution how many children worked?
All of them...
By the time of The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 child labor was already wiped out. Only a very small percentage(10-15%; the majority of which was agricultural) of children aged 8-15 were left in the workforce.
About 1 million children age 10 to 15 were working in America in 1920 (out of a total population of 12 million kids in that age range). About half worked on family farms. That is 4% that did everything else, working in factories, trained as apprentices, and served as messengers.
Technological innovations created a demand for skilled laborers and created a fall in demand of unskilled children. Also, adults are already hard to manage as it is, can you imagine how easy it is for a factory manager to take care of kids? And the adults who had children were more wealthy to be able to provide for their children without them in the workplace. Because, you-know who wants that for their kids?
By the time a law was created, child labor was already non-existent.
You so confident about the efficacy of your child labor laws...
Imagine going to some poor african country and passing a law against child labor. Is that going to stop child labor? Not a chance.
After years of /v/ sucking this fat man's microscopic cock, listening to your collective ass-pain brings me great pleasure.
I don't deluge my library with cheap steam games like the rest of /v/ does (I have ~50 games on steam, ~20 GOG) so I have less of a financial investment in it to make me lose my shit like some people here and on lereddit the last few days.
All it does is reinforce in my mind that Valve is intellectually and creatively bankrupt. My first thoughts were that this was yet another way for valve to monopolize the PC marketspace and offer less of an incentive to make new software, or offer better services on their own proprietary steam platform. They're hacks; they've been hacks for years. People are hopefully going to be more aware of this in the coming months.
>>292247201 Never liked him, still don't. DRM was a stupid idea and was the foundation for his monopoly scheme.
He released a unfinished sequel because some fuck leaked the alpha, the bought a mod which he immediately abandoned (alien swarm), he helped turn a simple team based shoote rinto some stupid cosmetic dress up game with exploitive economy and has done this to two other games to boot and now he wants to dip into hardware and hopefully consume microsoft's market by using linux as a foundation for more exploitation.
>>292258202 >Free market >Steam basically owns PC gaming and do they want, the way they want, and nothing can change that and no one can complain about that, because if they want to play 90% of the PC games they have to play them through steam
He is, and always has been, a hypocrite. I have always felt that GabeN and Valve have carried themselves with an arrogant, "holier-than-thou" demeanor.
Their games are successful because they exploit the addiction-prone, coercing them into spending money on hats, crates, or whatever other Skinner-box token they feel can net them the most cash. And that's fine. That's not a problem.
What is a problem is how they then turn and shit all over other studios, arrogantly promoting their bullshit "culture" and their obnoxious handbook for employees.
They're a glorified cult deserving of the pain they're in right now.
>>292266794 Imagine if the unofficial patches get sold buying patches, the shit storm that bethesda won't come out of hiding to fix what they initially started. Skyrim dies and if the next elder scrolls isn't patched correctly looks like we're paying for unofficial patches. It will literally sink Bethesda over night knowing people have to pay for patches that are obvious fuck ups on the main companies part. Their half finished games will crumble and no one will play them because who the fuck wants to pay for a patch to a bug they should have fixed in the beginning. Also if they patch now it will break most mods including all the patches,SKSE,FNIS,Scriptdragon and most versions of ENB that rely on lighting mods, the only thing left unharmed is what is already sold by other games. Skins nothing that actually fixes or changes the game just fucking skins and not even good ones at that all the ones with script and particle effects are broken because of the patch they implement if they intend to fix the problems or patch out nonworkshop.
They will either break all mods with trying to fix the problem unofficial patches have done or break them by implementing nonworkshop mods and forcing you to feed them everything or have nothing also having to give them your bank info to even put shit on the workshop for free.
They will kill any real form of modding to push in nothing but shit skins no one cares about. They will kill it and everyone let it happen, no one is on the right side of this. At this point not even modders deserve a donation button they deserve nothing because they are letting this happen. It has shown us fully how big of a piece of shit the whole community and industry is. This is the tipping point and we are in the middle of the crash. Brace for impact and be warned propping up another company will only repeat this. Do not support sign ups for side shit you don't need this is how steam begun and how everyone followed.
