>>315257779 Yes. Better than a good portion of the latest Tales games and even better then some of the older ones. Alishafags basically were the vocal minority that managed to trick people thinking this was a bad game. its a solid 8/10.
Camera's wonky as fuck with walls or anything of any size. The combining thing feels unneeded, especially with 4 players. Players 2-4 STILL can't manage the main menu. I really like Alishia's Cheria outfit.
>>315259156 >tter than a good portion of the latest Tales games and even better then some of the older ones >Which ones then? Xillia, Xillia 2, Graces F, Hearts R, Legendia, Tempest(Anything is better than this to be honest) and Rebirth.
>>315259913 Eh, I was just comparing gameplay wise. Story wise, pretty much all Tales are shitty, Zestiria is just somewhat shittier. And yeah, Graces's characters in general are pretty weak. Graces has Pascal though.
I watched a random playthrough and it seems cute. Mikleo was all mad and then sorey went exploring in the ruins because that's his thing apparently and this girl he was with clearly wanted them to homo bang. the combat looked pretty neat. Is there a lot of content and optional stuff and items and shit?
I remember an anon in another thread saying Zestiria was better than Destiny. I might like Zestiria but for fucks sake it doesn't even hold a candle compared to Destiny, especially if you played Destiny DC.
>>315260152 It's not bad, but overall, I think Zestiria is better. My "overall" includes the dubbing.
Why did they have to fuck the equipment system so badly. Couldn't they just go with the standard "find/buy new stuff, check stats and equp"? My Sorey has been using the same sword for the last 20 levels, because if I change it, all his stats will go 20 points down. Fuck this shit.
>>315260397 >I have no more consoles other than my old shitty Wii. You bought the wrong system if you wanted JRPG's. Should have gotten a PS3 but if you have a decent PC you can get quite a few including Zestiria.
>>315260725 You'll never get an 'objective' ranking or whatever. It depends on how well you can stomach certain cliches, how important the story is to you and how much you enjoy the combat. There's a few that are almost universally disliked, but to me almost all the Tales games have at least something going for them.
>>315260725 >is there a solid tales ranking between games? Legendia, Innocence, Tempest, Symphonia 2 and Hearts (DS) are generally viewed as the worst ones. Graces is love it or hate it. Symphonia and Vesperia fags and generally at each others throats although both games are overated as fuck, they're good though. Rebirth and Destiny a have a small but solid fanbase. The rest are "meh".
>>315261940 Objectively speaking, you're gonna get decent combat, decent OST, decent characters, an interesting MC that gets annoying as fuck by mid game and a story with great ideas that fall short in the long run.
>>315262402 Yeah, it's pretty solid. Far from being the best shit ever but still solid. I only played the 360 version but from what I know, you're gonna have 2 extra characters, more content as in sidequests and side bosses and more end game. Also an epilogue of some sort I think.
>>315262402 Two new playable characters, second set of skill assignments, 8 (up from 4) overlimit bars and a bunch more stuff I can't remember off the top of my head. I think there was a party coliseum too.
>>315262686 >tie between Xillia 2 and Vesperia, >don't listen to Gracesfags Xillia 2 is legit good gameplay and Graces has, personally speaking, the most fun combat. Narikiri Dungeon X and Rebirth have the best combat though
Who /replayingvesperia/ here? >>315262686 >I think Xillia2 takes more skill and has a higher ceiling overall Does it though? Sure, X2 is faster but it seems it's more lenient with the timing in general. Overall there are mechanics that I dislike about both Vesperia's and X2's combat.(though of course both games do more things right than wrong)
>>315262963 Graces is okay, older Tales fans just used to get triggered over people praising it as the second coming of Christ. Can't say I prefer it to the older games but it's not a terrible game mechanic-wise either, just a bit too railroaded.
>>315263039 Sheena was my favourite 'fast' character to use, actually. But yeah, Presea with the right EX Gems is hard to interrupt during attacks so her slow speed ends up not mattering as much, she just tears into enemies like it's a joke. Her Beast in particular (more than Lloyd's) is really useful for getting enemies away from Raine and Genis
>>315262795 Weird, until you get used to her odd randomized style switching (or get a bunch of skills that make the whole thing easier). Oddly good at supporting and healing. Trigger Tune rapes solo arena and Form-Up spam to get OVL is silly broken.
>>315262992 >Sure, X2 is faster but it seems it's more lenient with the timing in general. Not really. The stagger duration is about the same as with any other Tales - you probably only saw longer durations due to specific artes/abilities, which is up to you to work into your rotations.
In fact, I'd say it's a lot more complicated because you have to keep track of 3 things: stagger, weakness combos, and OTG.
>>315263165 Presea was fun to play with all of her super/hyper armour. But in the end, I feel like Lloyd's the most well designed character in ToS.
>>315262795 That's a very subjective matter. The way she is integrated into the party is nothing to write home about, she is a very silly/comedic/childish character. Her sub-plot is actually okay, but that only gets touched on occasion and most of the time is just Patty being silly. Battle-wise though, she is one of the most deep and versatile characters in the series and is a blast to use. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhqtppJSxM8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVhJoiQ9xs0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRNeXyU5QM4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5RPfXUZQiA Overall things that I like about Patty are her fighting style, Chiwa Saito, her interactions with Raven, and her subplot. In that order.
>>315262638 Yuri is easy mode. Combos like a madman, and Hyper Combo just makes short of everything if you can get a combo going on something. Judith was fun as fuck, but needs a million skills to really get going. Loved using her in NG+. Raven has some fun shit going on, but the overpowered stuff is from one of the extra dungeons. Friend of mine was a monster with Karol. Suffers from being ridiculously slow and being terrible at chasing things. That baseball attack helps and Charge Keep is incredible. Repede is best dog. Rita is completely, 100% broken. Fireball is the single most ridiculous spell in the game, and she starts with it. Violent Pain can infinitely stunlock things that don't have Overlimit and Tidal Wave is legendary by now. Patty's fun, once you know what you're doing. Flynn is absent for like 80% of the game, but he's solid. Reminds me of a 3D Cless with spells. Never used Estelle, and she got benched for Patty for heals to boot.
I've only played Abyss. How are the modern Tales games compared to Abyss?
Abyss I thought was decent, though not exceptional. The plot was fairly generic jrpg stuff, but I liked that it had the guts to make the protagonist deeply flawed. It gave tension to the party dynamic.
>>315263892 the only other game similar to abyss combat wise is vesperia almost all of the games have only mediocre stories and they won't do much for you since majority of tales fans say abyss had the best story try picking up one of the more recent titles on ps3 or the symphonia hd port
>>315262686 I kind of agree on X2 and V, but Graces was fun as fuck, admit it. Also, Vesperia required more skill. I can confirm this because I fucking suck but I could at least chain 50 hit combos with Milla in ToX2 regularly, sometimes 100 if I didn't fuck up
>>315263907 They definitely show similarities. Presea had more AOE stuff, with her Beast and Destruction artes. Karol prefers his fights one on one, mostly. Charging his artes is basically his main 'gimmick'. By holding the button you can gather a charge and enhance whatever arte you're doing. Starts off slowish and clunky, but you get skills that speed up the charge, allow you to keep the charge even if you miss, etc. He has some really potent shit and Resshin Drop is monstrous (deals significantly more damage on downed enemies if you use an axe). Later he gets a skill that buffs your defenses to silly levels once you get under 25% health, at which point even bosses can struggle to damage you. On top of that he has healing and recovery artes to boot.
No air game though. And I can never unhear Katejina Loos, which is equal parts amusing and ridiculous.
Solid basics with characters, story, and music but they really didn't spend a lot of time filling in the gaps. Dungeon design is very uninspired and there really aren't a lot of events that unfold or twists throughout the story. Elements that would be very story heavy or gameplay involved in other JRPGs are in Zestiria just a quick run with not much going on, you still get the basic story going but there isn't much else going on around it or between story points. You can even tell they wanted to do so much more with both Alisha and Rose but must not have gotten around to working on it because various aspects of their character and story are missing or just don't lead anywhere making a few things kinda awkward. Side characters as well suffer from this, you have a few baddies and good npcs along hte way that pop up a few times and that's it, they really needed much more content on them.
Worth playing as it is unless you're a complete stuckup kinda person, it's not a completely sound game but when it wants to hit hard it really does.
>>315263892 The plot is never as good as Abyss, but they're not terrible either. Each one has it's own charm. Except Zestiria, the plot is literally "an ancient evil has awoken and you're the chosen one" with the pacifism cranked up to 120% and the world building is not even there, it's so empty and boring. Thankfully the lack of transition into battle makes things fast and almost fun, if not for the total lack of artes. You learn all artes you can possible get by level 50, which is a bit more than halfway through the game. The fusion system is fine but once again, there's a total lack of artes making it worthwhile and many skills in base form don't seem to work when you're fused.
On top of it all, combos are now restricted to 4 attacks in a row (unless you go out of your way to try and stack certain skills to increase the combo to 5 or 6 if you're lucky) and then you have to wait, SC gain is painfully boring to wait for and rewards very defensive playing, the camera is fucking terrible and if there's an object in the field you bet your ass the camera is going to smash up against it and point directly downward at your feet.
There are 4 casters and only 2 melee oriented characters. You can argue against it, but the fact remains the 4 casters each have a single dedicated element, and in a game where hitting weaknesses is a huge priority, you bet your ass they're going to be useless without Sorey or Rose.
>>315263808 >Fireball is the single most ridiculous spell in the game Agreed. My Brother played Rita and spammed that shit all day. By the end of the game each use threw about 8 projectiles and did more damage than tidal wave. Shit's broken as fuck.
>>315264662 Milla is fun as fuck to use. I can't believe they didn't take advantage of her "Spirit Shift" ability to turn every Seraph into a mix of melee and spellcaster like her in Zestiria. Such wasted potential, man...
>>315264848 >I can't believe they didn't take advantage of her "Spirit Shift" The reason why Milla worked so well was because she had access to every element and with spirit shift, that's essentially double her arte pool.
Zestiria's problem with the Seraph isn't that they don't have melee/spells, it's that they only have one element because of narrative reasons.
Also, to that other Anon saying Xillia2 has lenient timings, this webm shows a dropped combo - it's actually pretty tight.
>>315265738 I started Xillia 2 on moderate difficulty because I jumped straight outta the final boss of X1 into X2. I didn't want the tension to drop too much. Do you get anything extra for bumping the difficulty up? >>315265820 oh alright. Do you remember their names? I'll keep an eye out for them.
>>315265892 I honestly can't remember if it added anything in X2. Moderate is still pretty damn easy if you're familiar with Tales games. I'd go for at least Hard unless a boss is really raping your ass.
>That delusional religion pandering >That camera >That extremely confusing item and combat system >That level design / monster placement
The soundtrack is pretty damn good. I like horizontal progression but even with all the tutorials it all seems like one huge pain in the ass. I hate getting locked out of being able to travel places at random intervals.
>>315258735 Maybe deep inside she knew she was killing innocent people? However yeah the whole "pure of heart" thing is pretty poorly thought out. Tons of people throughout history have genuinely believed they were doing the right things, even though they were actually doing some pretty horrible stuff. That's japan for you though, they dig that shit.
>>315257779 Hate the fusing system with a passion. Not being able to move the camera manually while in combat is the stupidest idea ever. Fast travel should NOT cost money or should be really cheap, this isn't an mmo. There's so much backtracking that being able to warp around would eliminate a lot of the annoyance with that.
Other than those things I'm really liking the game. Most of the Rose/Alisha stuff was way overblown, a lot of it makes sense if you pay attention to the plot. Plot is pretty predicable and has some poorly thought out ideas, but that's most tales games to a T. I'm having fun.
>>315257779 I can stand the story. I can stand the horrible camera (they said they fixed it, I believed them, oh boy how wrong I was) I even can stand the retarded AI (I have never seen a worst AI in any other Tales)
But the fucking equipment system, the most stupid thing ever, mix grinding and RNG.
>But you can solve it by using the cats.
AND THAT IS WORSE, that makes it 10 times more grinding, choosing the cat and then looking for the equipment you want. And don't forget that fusing equipment with full slots will change the skills it has.
It is the most stupid thing ever, I hope they mod the PC version so you can choose the skills you carry when you fuse it.
>>315269032 The camera only bothered me for the first hour and the AI works well enough for me. Don't have any issue with the story so far. The equipment shit is overly complicated though. I don't even bother getting into it.
>>315269303 I was reading a guide the other day and I was like "are you fucking serious"?
So when fusing, the skills have a number, and when you fuse the skills if they are in the same element they sum to give the new skill, or something like that, seriously I saw it and decided to just fucking park the game.
>>315269385 >>315269640 You can emulate IV, VII and Type-0 and have a better experience, and both IV and VII were on the PC before steam.
TLR is better than IV, Type-0 and Visualnovel Chronicles combined. Square gutted the multiplayer from the Type-0 port a.k.a. the only fucking reason to buy it.
It's also better than Souls. Souls games have horrid controls and they're terrible PC ports. They're slow, they're clunky and the default keybinds on both the controller and KB+M are pantsu on head retarded senpai desu baka. I'd rather play bloodbourne any day of the week and that game sucks.
Meanwhile TLR on the PC is the definitive version. It runs at 60+FPS and all the graphical issues evaporate with a little tweaking. It has tons of content, a tasteful story and it's a SaGa warzone and you don't need an xbox controller to play it.
>>315270278 You can get a pretty authentic experience with an emulator if you know what you're doing. You can even save and load at will or bump up the resolution to ungodly levels. I'm pretty sure there's some HD packs floating around for FF7 emu.
You can actually play online with type-0 emu. It's a pain in the dick but you can actually do it. It's impossible on steam because they gutted it.
FFIV who cares, it shouldn't even be top 5 final fantasy games on anyone's list for fuck sake. The PC port doesn't even have the classic soundtrack.
If you really want to say Final Fan-ta-shee VII is the best JRPG on steam fine, I won't argue. I'd just wonder why you'd buy it on steam.
Good: >Fun characters when they were talking on skits. When it came to conflict and stuff, they sucked expect for Zaveid and Edna. >Skits were entertaining >Music was better than expected >The only cutscene that I liked was the one on Lastonbell, before the final battle. That one was great.
Bad: >Sorey I'm sorry guys, but this guy just was not good at all. His convictions were all over the place. Always a yes-man. I could go on more about him, but whatever. >The party's attitude towards everything What I mean about this is that, there was no tension at all within the party. If there was conflict, its like they were ok with whatever anyone suggested. Hard to explain but that was what I felt. >Rose can do no wrong This girl. She was actually good. Had great lines, attitude, and other stuff. Only problem is she was perfect. Anything she did, the party was in awe and I mean everything. >Alisha's removal Now I know this is a hot topic, I myself am neutral about it since she was removed early in the game anyway. But after playing more and more, I just couldn't understand why she was removed at all. The party kept getting into politics anyway and altering stuff that was supposedly what they should have not been doing. Only reason I pointed this out is because when she was reintroduced again, I felt that even she could have stayed anyway and the events would have played out the same way. >Battle System Now I'm no expert regarding the Tales battle system, but I couldn't understand the hell out of this. What I mean are the skills on the weapons/armors. Also, I felt more restricted on this than on Xillia's system. >Boring as fuck villain When you ask someone to find out the truth and collect stuff, make sure the revelation is something big. It would have been more entertaining if it was actually Shepherd Michael that was the true enemy or something.
All in all: Music: 1 Story: .5 Characters: .5 Graphics: .5 Battle System: 0
>>315270967 >>315271042 They at least tried to explain the loot system properly several times. Every time they did it I was like "Okay, I get this and then... uh, wait if they're next to each other they negate? But if they're in a row you get bonuses? Don't they need to be next to each other to be in a row? Is this bingo or plinko or what?"
This is one of the few JRPGs that just left me clueless, and as a result my party ended up really weak really quick. I'm ten hours in and I feel like I need to restart just to grasp it all, but the problem is I don't really like the story is and the combat is dull compared to other tales games.
>>315270657 There are a lot more and higher quality mods for the PC version and you can bump up the resolution as well. So it's only better to you because you need to savescum and you have an easier time doing that on emulator?
Online was complete shit in type-0. It was just a means to getting items, and now you can have the AI do it, in fact having the AI do it made grinding for those items easier. Getting rid of it altogether would've been the best way to go. It's still a better system, not to even mention the graphical improvements. It's the definitive version.
FFIV is mediocre but that still makes it lightyears better than something that's completely awful. Emulating the DS or iOS version doesn't give you the classic soundtrack either. On PC however, you can mod it in. So that's three out of three cases where I wonder how you think their emulated counterparts are better.
>>315271410 Truth be told I didn't understand it at all. Ok, more like, I didn't try to understand it more. I knew the gist of what they were trying to say, but for me it felt overly convoluted, especially knowing that I had to farm some more equipment just to get a few stats on it.
>>315271042 > The party kept getting into politics anyway and altering stuff that was supposedly what they should have not been doing. They only did that like twice, and both times was because of MUHlevolence.
Either way, she was a pretty pointless character compared to Rose.
>>315271731 The only reason she felt pointless to me is because they scrapped her early. Late in the game when she was reintroduced, she actually had a better development than even Sorey. Not that's even comparable since Sorey as a protag sucked.
Like I said about Rose. She's a good character. Problem is, she had no problem at all. She had no dilemmas. Nothing.
Anyway she wasn't the big issue. Sorey was. I hated every mind-juggling thing he did regarding anything he questioned. Also his bow. It looked fucking retarded. His running animation and walk as well. Fuck.
>>315259823 You don't that is literally the fucking hardest fight in the game for me and I beat all others but post game ones.
-The camera is at its WORST -You cannot start a weakness combo because they are people element but they can resist. -Fusing is the only way you can survive yet its becomes suicide since its 1v2 -Rose hits like a 18 wheeler with a spiked grill and somehow zavied becomes a magic adept >Rose is strong vs A-artes while zavied is strong vs B and magic >arena the width of 3 characters
Its the only fight I said fuck it too and I beat the rouge turtlez with the xillia 2 moveset
>>315257779 Bad writing, bad battle system, empty dungeons with nothing to do in them, no minigames, traditional sidequests got cut and their rewards are sold as DLC, EVEN THE POST GAME GRADE SHOP IS DLC WHAT THE FUCK. Also, why the fuck Alisha leaves the party and Sergei isn't even playable? Instead we have to deal with Mary Sue Queen who not only is completely averse to character development, she also stops Sorey from actually showing his resolve earlier on with her "hurr taking lives is my job" shit. Buyers remorse/10.
>>315272139 >The only reason she felt pointless to me is because they scrapped her early. Iunno senpai, her character arc didn't exactly tie into Sorey's cleansing journey at all. She would've worked in a game like Vesperia that was all about dealing with the human world and corruption, but Sorey's story focuses on completely different topics.
The only time he even meddles in her affairs was because Lailah said there was a serious threat of him going full muhlevolent if she died.
>>315271675 I liked the idea if they just simplified it so that lets say for martial art comboes
>1st column is for 1st hit bonuses, 2nd column for 2nd hit bonuses and so on
>A row would give vague bonuses like 20% non-element damage boost.
For fusing and whatnot the whole thing should just be burnt into the ground. You can "break" an item to steal a quality from it (such as pezur or whatever the fuck they name this shit) to put into another weapon, fusing weapons just improves base quality.
I personally think that whole system had promise for a really varied experience but they managed to just fuck it up REALLLY fucking badly.
>>315271846 I found it nigh impossible at lvl 42, the fight go on for waay too long for how much damage your outputting. Maybe if you got some really strong synergised gear.
>>315259565 >i'm just going to pick tales games at random haha >no innocence DS >posts rebirth
I'm glad that the tales series mostly takes opinions from japan bucase if they listed to the chucklefucks here in the states the series would be dead. And everybody seems to post tempest but I doubt most played it and it should stay that way and the game should be shitted on. I remember how disappointing I was with the DS tales trying to emulate them on PC since I wanted to complete the mainline ones.
Also,While all the characters are cool in zestiria but the MC they all play like shit but rose and sorey and the pendulum users are a distant 3rd that made the game less fun for me since I only really played sorey since I geared rose to be controlled by the CPU (lots of actions to HP skills and resistance vs creatures) while I geared for stun and basically cheese the game. Awful combat with a skill system that doesn't fit the game and makes combat trivial makes me wonder why this is not in anyone's bottom 5.
>>315269673 Those games didn't penalize you for wrong elements you were given bonuses iirc except for destiny R but it wasn't as strict as in zestiria you just gave less damage vs using more SC,less stagger,no stagger and speeding up magic casts.
>>315272567 Maybe. But I can't say anymore regarding that as, like said earlier, she was cut suddenly anyway. There were issues regarding the two girls but they weren't that story-breaking.
>>315272587 Yeah the fusing really was the one I didn't delve into. What I just did was fuse some shit and whatever.
They had a great idea about it for sure, but the implementation was wack.
Even if that ones was great, the battle system can't save it anyway. The camera sucked soooo bad. Even my brother who was watching kept asking, "why is the camera so close?" or "was the camera like this in the previous games?".
>people placing Zestiria than Eternia and Rebirth Fuck this fanbase to hell. I hope you continue to be jewed and sold incomplete games by Namco. >>315271042 You summed up pretty well my issues with the cast. Sorey is just the divines personal goy and more specifically Lailah 90% percent of the time. Rose is an okay character ruined by the constant shilling by the rest of the party, it seems Baba or whoever the man in charge of the rewrites was had no faith in her character at all. Alisha there is a clear point after the second act which is "ALISHA JOINS HERE" yet nothing comes out of it, the shops keep selling her weapons. Just a fucking mess because they decided to sell her as DLC.(which backfired and had to give the DLC for free and drop that entire plot-arc, as you know)
>>315273021 Really you just have to plan ahead and use the normin ability when you recruit them well. Bottom one is Sorey. I could get the 80% damage boost on him too if I could be bothered to get some boots with the two that I am missing.
>>315272981 For me personally just having rightstick be the camera and have r3+button be issue command could save soo many issues. Ive said it before but tales of zestiria plays maybe even worse than Star Ocean 3 did and that games a decade old, and combat had alot of room for improvement.
What let this game down was actually easily solvable things. Someone might mod the PC version to fix camera issues. I can't believe this game had like a 3-4year dev cycle Anyhow star Ocean 5 is the next big jrpg hack-n-slash dungeoncrawlerino thing.
>>315257779 worst game in series, shit tier story, shit tier combat, shit tier world... i have played and finished almost all in not all main tail of games and liked them all, gave up on that shity game after 3h of painful gameplay...
>>315273716 Oh yeah I remember acting the same way when I started the game. I was thinking /v/ overreacted again, the camera was fine after an hour, fixed also the height and zoom in the pause menu >mfw lots of dungeons with tight ass corners I couldn't fucking see shit.
>>315273807 You thought 5 stacks would be better than 10 stacks? It would have helped if they just explained the entire thing in one go. I am still missing the fucking explanation of how fusing different skills changes what skill you get.
>>315259913 ????? Zestiria shitty story shitty combat, boring as fuck characters, empty boring world, design of characters is just uber shit tier Edna being exception, visual side of game may be just worst in series... so yeah its shit tier game and its not better in anything then other main entries of series...
>>315273286 >people placing Zestiria than Eternia and Rebirth I assume you mean higher, but I guess it's mostly because retards are pretending to have played every Tales of games ever, while Rebirth was never released outside of Moonland and Eternia was a pretty uncommon game in the 90s. Also, Farah is still the best girl.
>>315274002 Why is Zestria so small? Pretty much every other game has you travel the world, sometimes going to other planets as well and having flying machines and shit. This one you just walk back and forth on a single continent.
>>315271728 You can beat most the first time however do NOT fight the boar and PLEASE do not fight the 9 headed serpent.
I was stubborn and it took me about 2 hours to beat each one. They basically taught me the battle system and skill system because to beat them you need to be great at the skill system. I finally beat the 9 headed serpent (hard mode) after deteating the gryphon at the end of the cave and realized it was like almost level 80 with extremely high stats. I was like level 40.
When fighting these bosses expect everyone else to die but you. Also the bosses seem to get much stronger and get new moves before they die and they act quicker.
>>315274067 I fought them out of principle since I hated running away and that was like the first time a non boss ko'd me.
>>315274336 It's hard to try to kill something that game-overs me in literally under 5 seconds. I spent like an hour trying to kill that evil skunk outside of pendrago and couldn't deal with it's rage mode artes hitting me for 80% of my hp before I got my first mystic arte.
Yeah they kept talking about some huge revelation they were missing and even after you've watched all the historia. You then go watch the memory stone event and at the end of all that and the guy giving up his fucking life for you to learn things, all you've learned is nothing of worth. Nasty general became evil boss, you still need to stab him with a sword, the end.
>>315274534 that was one of the easier ones since its weak to an element
Gear up MC of choice and lailah for bonus damage, damage on stun and X on evasion skills and go nuts. Occasionally the skunk will spray gas you can actually use these to perfect dodge and get BG/HP/ect if you have the skill since the perfect dodge triggers easily for it.
So the gameplan is to go arma fire and spam attacks but be patient since thats a close range arma.
Its funny how I give a good portion of advice on this game but I absolutely loathe it
>>315274581 Me too anon don't let the haters here get to you. Its only on /v/ that you would hear people say its bad.
>>315261045 What is wrong with innocence? I tried to play it but couldn't because for some reason my characters were totally unable to do damage. No one ever talks about it though and I kind of enjoyed what I played.
>>315272139 Like I said about Rose. She's a good character. Problem is, she had no problem at all. She had no dilemmas. Nothing.
how is that problem ? god i hate when character in jrpg game ave problems, its always gay as fuck, oh i killed someone, oh someone used me, oh look put something only 5yr could whine about and thats it for character development in jrpg games >.< character that doesnt cry about everything is god sent in any rpg...
>>315274937 Original Innocence felt really, really boring to me. Boring sidequests, boring dungeons. And Ruca/Luca was a doormat like you wouldn't believe. Might've changed later in the game, but I never got that far.
Oh yeah the titles. Everyone gets half a dozen of them and they change fucking nothing, all the big bonuses are shared across all titles. So just pick the one that gives the biggest damage bonus and call it a day.
>>315274903 What do I do when it starts casting artes and then finishes almost right away and hits me for all my health unless I am not trying to hit it because you can't dodge it unless you are not next to the thing then as soon as it finishes casting it starts casting again and does this about 5 times in a row then runs away and does it again when I can't interrupt the casts because sometimes enemies randomly become damage immune.
>>315274256 >Why is Zestria so small? It's even worse, the world itself is so bland and uninteresting, there is very little variation in the scenery and when the game shows something new that could be exciting nothing ever comes out of it. I actually got a bit excited when I reached the field with the spear-like towers, then Sorey just says he saw about it in the Celestial Record and that's it. I tried circling them to see if there was anything to do, but nope, it's was just there for no reason.
Also, none of the things going on are really interesting. I find the war between Rolance and Hyland to be most ridiculous part of it all, why are they even fighting for? Should I care about it only because the evil guy is involved to gather MUH LEVOLENCE? The writers were not even trying when they came up with this shit.
>>315275306 >reason everyone is fighting is malevolence >can't just explain to them all their problems are the cause of their problems and they just need to stop giving a shit about everything to solve them Really it's the worst motivation I've ever seen in villains. They turned evil because in this world if you feel bad for a little while you become a monster.
>>315275184 Do not test it while casting. Basically you can wait it out or split (tell lialah not to use BG) to interrupt it and then re-arma. However when I fought he he could one shot me with any attack non arma so I just waited it out or countered with my own magic. Its risky though.
I forgot what spell it casts? Was it mindflayer? If so equip longstep and dodge towards the enemy. I would position myself a step away and dodge then immediately counter attack the spell.
>>315275173 World maps are an abstraction of a larger explorable world, you would expect that over time with improving technology we would be able to move on from that.
The actual problem is that creating a good open world game is really hard, and not even gigantic companies with hundreds of millions of dollars can pull it off with any reliability. Expecting a team of 30 people to do it on a shoestring budget is delusional, so someone at Bamco management needs a fucking reality check.
>>315275842 But neither Graces or Xillia could be called 'open world' by any stretch of the definition. Instead of a world map you now have corridors that lead to wherever you have to go next. Sure, most world maps don't contain much of interest either, but they at least give the impression of a big world.
I'd honestly say that the current corridors are worse immersion breakers than the old, low poly overworlds.
No I mean every title has the same major passive bonuses (armatization element bonus, specific ailment removal bonus etc.) so the choice between titles is mostly meaningless. Your companions get brutally raped by bosses anyway so you'll probably just grab the +a.attack/+attack title for everyone and forget titles exist for the rest of the game.
>>315276051 They're also a good way of showing the effects the game's events have on the world.
There's the Adephagos looming in the skybox in Vesperia, Meteor in FF7, Time Compression limiting access to areas in FF8 and more. It's admittedly an easy way to showcase such events, but if it works, it works.
>>315274937 Innocence is terrible. Story is shit, dungeons are shitty straight hallways (last dungeon is literally a spiral of stairs for 40 minutes and 2 boss battles in between), shitty characters, shitty gameplay, etc. Honestly, it's barely better than Tempest.
I'm buying Xillia 2 tomorrow since I was in the mood for more Tales after Zestiria even though Zest was subpar. What am I in for? I liked the story in Xillia 1, not that much, but I liked it. Is Xillia 2 at least good?
>>315276174 I like 3D environments and being able to encounter enemies in the world. Zestria doesn't do this quite as well as other installments in the series, or even some other JRPGs but I'd still prefer that over a battle swirl random encounter.
>>315275117 >And Ruca/Luca was a doormat like you wouldn't believe. Might've changed later in the game, but I never got that far. No. The only interesting bits with Luca are at the beginning when he's enjoying his new found power. He's a doormat from beginning to end.
>>315275403 This I can agree with 100%. The story for the xillia games weren't even bad and were fleshed out and the story never contradicted itself like zestiria. But it does have some moments leaving you saying stuff like "why didn't he just do this."
The characters were extremely developed (even if only counting the first game) but the story literally had pic related after fezebel marsh regarding the story.
>>315276051 >I'd honestly say that the current corridors are worse immersion breakers than the old, low poly overworlds. Probably, but clearly it's not a dealbreaker for a lot of people. They are getting a little better game by game, though at this rate Tales won't be around long enough to get to an acceptable level of open world design.
>>315276174 That or more dev time per game. This anniversary shit is fucking retarded, it's ruined 3 consecutive games now. The craziest thing is, Xillia 1 and Zestiria were rushed out to hit the 15th and 20th anniversaries respectively, and they came out 3 years and 4 months apart. How the fuck does that work?
>>315276721 Combat got significantly improved, though incredibly biased towards Ludger. Assets get reused everywhere. They ditched the ability to switch party members mid-battle (something I still haven't forgiven them). The character relations are weird, if you ask me. It's like they feared upsetting the status-quo, and decided to advance everything as little as possible. Oh, and almost everyone likes Ludger, which was sorta jarring.
Still enjoyed it, but I'm a Talesfag, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I still like ToP SNES, after all.
>>315276829 Oh god, that gunner chick was grating until the fucking end. The japanese wannabe was tons better. All the characters were bad though, except maybe Richard and Spada. The only genuine fun character was that nutjob with a spear whose name I don't remember. Innocence was an all around terrible experience.
>>315276826 I've heard about the debt system but I didn't look more into it as I wasn't playing yet to play the game before. Is it as restricting as Zestiria's shop/fuse system? If not, then that's fine. Right now, anything is actually better than what Zestiria's system offered.
>>315277101 When I saw before the battle cutscene I freaked the fuck out like I just got transported here and did one dungeon. It was jarring tbqh. I didn't believe it until the game told me if I jumped down in the dimension area it was a point of no return.
At least I could have went back to rise maxia before that.
>>315277101 That's because Elympios was really just a separate continent. You can call it another "world", but in reality, it's the protagonists discovering France for the first time after spending the majority of the game in England. The island cluster of Rieze Maxia can be connected to Elympios via an actual physical bridge, kinda like a reverse English Channel Tunnel.
>>315277017 >Assets get reused everywhere. Well I don't remember the first game that much so it won't be an issue, I think. >They ditched the ability to switch party members mid-battle. THEY FUCKING WHAT?
>>315257779 The camera is ridiculously horrible (honestly don't know how the camera made it into the final product with how many problems it has) and adding armatizing into the game really fucked over the battle system. Equipment skills are really unsatisfying and requires a lot of banging your head against the RNG until it gives you what you want.
And the world in general is just lacking, looking at the world map there's a region north of Lohgrin that looks like you could go to it but there's just this massive wall to the north that you can't get around. At least the music is great!
>>315277692 Yep. You select your 4-man party whenever you go outside of the towns and that's what you're gonna work with. Ludger is required for 90% of the game as well. Which is not awful, as he's damn good, but fuck restrictions. Sure, fitting in 5 members to swap around might've required some creativity, but goddamn I'm still mad.
>>315277602 I mean, before Milla dispelled the barrier they were basically in a bubble with no way of knowing there was an outside world. I don't remember the exact geography (did they just assume the world was flat? was rieze maxia curved into a tiny ball floating somewhere invisibly in the elympian sky?) but it's a little bit more complex than england and france.
>>315277692 You're locked into a party of 4 and can only switch out members at cities. You can still switch between the 4 to control, but you can't swap in new members in battle anymore.
>> People shit on every older Tales game after Zestiria was released on PC, >> PC fags troll in every thread saying how awesome Zestiria is, >> People who played more than 2-3 Tales of titles are aware that Zestiria is one of the worst games, >> People are saying Zestiria is better than all Tales of games released on Nintendo platforms, >> Vesperia fans, Zestiria trolls are fighting in almost every thread possible, it's like watching 3-year old children punching themselves in sandbox while crying how much their eyes hurts, >> Only good things about Zestiria is 3 main characters and music. Everything else was mediocre or really bad.
I played Tales of Symphonia 2 and that game is much better than Zestiria!
>>315278272 Something about symphonia 2's combat felt really stiff, didn't feel really good to me. Apparently this is the same combat system abyss uses but I hear abyss has broken freerunning on top of that so I've been staying away.
>>315278575 >Apparently this is the same combat system abyss uses Bullshit. I played Symphonia 2 for an hour, and it felt way worse than Abyss. I don't remember accidentally moving opponents by walking into them in Abyss. Also restricting the old party members to level 50 max was pants on head retarded.
Free run was broken in Abyss because you could go too fast and the AI sorta shat itself at that point.
>>315278759 Post-battle victory screen Asbel was best Asbel.
>>315278060 >Huge storm/fog blocking off England from the rest of the world >no air travel, only ships >ships can't bypass fog >England is an isolated island >fog gets lifted >England discovers France for the first time >builds a bridge across the English Channel instead of a tunnel
>>315279495 >Oh, I guess there's the Radiant Mythology games, but the combat always felt a bit off in those to me. Even though the combat kinda sucks on the first two the third one is kinda decent. They still count.
>>315257779 I watched my friend play this game for over two hours last week. He had all of two actual battles that were over in seconds. The rest was horrific cut scenes and pointless tasks, stocked to the brim with shitty anime archetypes and miserable RPG cliches.
Is this what JRPGs have become in the wake of the 90s? Damn, this genre should just die already.
>>315279980 Characters are even more just like in my cliche chinese cartoons than usual, I can't say about story but from what I've seen it's jiat an ancient evil awaken and only you can save the world, Shitty graphics I thnk that's because of open world tho. I don't know about combat it's nothing special I think. I remember eternia having somewhat different system and symphonia and abyss similar to zesteria.
>>315280174 Was it always like this? I had friends who loved Tales of Symphonia back in the day, and it seems to be generally well-regarded, but I never cared for JRPGs so I never touched it.
I also never cared for Action RPG combat. It annoys me. It's like a compromise between styles where instead of mashing a button through menus, you're just mashing a button through the attacks themselves. And you lose strategic control of your party members, which, to me, is a pretty important aspect.
>>315280393 Well, yeah. Eternia was 2D, Symphonia was their first foray into 3D combat. Abyss has pretty solid combat, but at the start it doesn't really show because your options are limited.
>>315280575 Symphonia is basically babby's first Tales. People nostalgia over it pretty damn hard. It's not a bad game at all, but the half-assed 3D combat annoys me too much for me to replay it. >button mashing That's why you can set the difficulty higher. And usually the tactics menu allows you to have the AI do what needs to be done. Set things to short-cuts if you want, or use the menu to manually tell them to do a certain technique.
>>315279889 I still dont remember what the fuck was going on there. >Helping out on a battlfield >climactic fight with the chimieriad >suddenly Ivar >IVAR NO IF YOU PUSH THAT BUTTON WE'LL REPEAT THE PLOT TWIST FROM SYMPHONIA >BAW GAWD HE PUSHED THE BUTTON And from there you could see that the budget was tapped out.
It was a pretty huge revelation, it showed that Heldalf didn't choose to become a hellion. While he did awful things he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and part of a huge chain of wrongdoing by many people.
That's where Sorey finds his ultimate answer in that Heldalf has to be saved, the answer to why and how he has to be stopped.
The war happened because Heldalf wanted it to, he was using it to breed more hellions. It's kinda everything the Cardinal and Symonne were doing. They pulled the strings and Heldalf pushed the world further into chaos.
Zestiria wasn't that complex and yet people still post with questions that were clearly explained in the game.
Speaking of the writing being hilariously bad at times. Did anyone find the taboo system some of the stupidest writing in ages? A human becomes freaking immortal if he swears not to tell anyone about the memory stone. No one can do anything about hellions, not even Seraphs... except Lailah can purify them and all she has to do is swear not to talk about the past?
So why the hell isn't everyone making up some taboo?
>>315282776 Sorey doesn't become corrupted in the bad ending where you kill Heldalf early. But Maotelus stays a hellion, and as Maotelus is the land itself, the malevolence can't be stopped. Sorey never figures out that Heldalf and Maotelus were tied together, so the world is fucked.
Hearts R has the best 3D combat system of the series.
AC for artes, no forced bullshit "Linking system" like XIllia/Zestiria, focus on aerial combos unlike Graces and Zestiria, every single character is fun as fuck to play, game has a just counter system that let's you bypass Iron Stance by getting gud. HEARTS R LET'S YOU BYPASS IRON STANCE.
I think the camera behaves so weidly, because they implemented a neat idea: when you touch an enemy, the current area will become the battle arena. The camera seems to struggle with all the possible obstructions that a battle arena could have.
>>315275842 Except technology is not the only limit a video game has and the biggest detriment to moving on from world maps is the fact that no one is going to actually design an entire world to scale (especially on a Tales game budget) so you'll either get a series of corridors a la Graces, a series of empty connected rooms, or one fuckhuge empty room.
I would dodge and get the BG and SC increase and still die since they nerfed it from graces but rose still has the graces dodge that leaves you fully invulnerable till you dodge all of the attacks. Water arma has great range but the attacks have HUGE cooldowns and leaves you open and you must commit and one wrong shot will make you instant cast zavied's hell gate which rose will promptly follow up on.
The're are just too many attacks and not enough room to move in that fight in the harder difficulties. I could NOT beat them level 70 in hard mode. I would have to be at least 90 with blessed gear. I could dodge no problem and rose is kind of easy to kite but zavied makes up for that weakness so you'd have to take out zavied. However being non arma will get me comboed to death by rose or 2 shotted by his magic.
>>315278041 No, but you might like Vesperia for playing similar. I don't think any game in the series really has the same feel Abyss does, though IIRC they all do the changing overworld theme. Well, all the ones that have overworlds.
Abyss just had a lot more love poured into the creation of its fictional world than most other Tales games and I don't know why they didn't haven't bothered with that aspect since as it was stellar.
>MC is full of Malevolence >Returning zesty characters purify then journey with her >Their goal is to help Sorey so he can wake up >The 700 years mikleo thing ends up just being a ruse to make people sad
>>315287520 People have made quite a bit of fun of TotA's world building though.
And yeah, changing overworld themes have been a thing since Phantasia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYLkVwNgkDM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zm_7xcgB8w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6t7xa2BTEQ
Either this, or different themes for different worlds.
>>315288182 Fonons are literally Abyss' world's equivalent of atoms so no, they didn't fucking go overboard with it I've done three playthroughs of the game and I think the whining about the Fonon issue is ridiculously exaggerated The image is funny yeah but that's because it's a hyperbole, not anything close to a line from the game
why why do i have to keep fighting tedious trash mobs just to go fast why do i have to run around listening to fluff text just to go fast why can't i just get a skill that gives me a flat buff to movement speed who thought this was a good idea
>>315289296 Yeah, but he never actually goes to talk to her, does he? At least two of those 'let's go check up on Alisha!' scenes have him eavesdropping on her and her maid-chan and not actually talking to her afterwards. And that scene towards the end of the game where he rejects going with her is so blunt there's even a skit afterwards where the seraphim talk about him rejecting her feelings.
He's attached to Alisha because she was his first human friend.
>>315282341 Read those posts again, it's not that people don't understand why these things are happening, it's that the motivation is lazy and uninteresting. The writers could have easily added things like the people of Rolance starving due to the constant rains, water poisoning in Hyland, riots all over the continent, a war would be perfectly acceptable then. Instead we get one isolated incident with a plague city and a villain who barely even tries to kill you. >First battle with Heldaf >Join me Shepard >No >Then let's finish this >No >Okay, bye Just face it, the writing is bad.
>>315292220 Starvation was not a factor in why the war was happening as the rain was a problem just in Pendrago and the people weren't doing much about it anyway. You never see the consequences for that supposed starvation either, as the worst thing happening is that people stay home all day. Now let's compare that shit to Vesperia, remember the people being put in work camps under false promises of becoming nobles? Remember the Rhybgaro horn quest? Why is there none of that in Zestiria?
I like Zestiria but hate the skill system. I wish someone would just min-max the best skill setup so I could copy it. I don't mind grinding it out but fuck if I can be assed to figure out what the optimal setups are.
>>315293475 If you talk to NPCs at all/listen to chatter, you hear people in Rolance that don't live in Pendrago are starving in droves and people are abandoning their villages to come to Pendrago, which is where what little food Rolance has is being funneled to. The massive fields of wheat outside of Pendrago are actually blighted from all the rain.
You are right, though, they should have showed that shit better instead of locking the information behind a missable skit and NPC dialogue that most people don't bother to read.
>>315293272 It's x4, so +300%. However there's a 20% chance for it to happen. How does it work? Every hit has that chance? Or is it a chance for a buff that increases your damage but lasts only some time? There's a general rule in the game, that buff/debuff effects have lower chance with every use. I wonder if it affects that bonus skill.
And it's "non-elemental" while my +20 attack works for all martial and hidden artes.
This is only my first playthrough, so I have no idea if this makes sense though. Just my logic.
>>315292808 Well, I guess so. I play on moderate and lower the difficulty if a boss or a anomalous hellion is way too hard. And that happens rather often, I admit.
>>315293540 The "best" skills would change depending on the enemy you are fighting. Otherwise the best skills are just what are best for your play style. I like the versatility of the Zesteria system but fuck if its not a huge pain in the ass to actually get the skill setup you want.
>>315294291 >>315294516 So long you're actually making use of Power Hits and enemy weaknesses, you can easily beat mobs and bosses 10+levels higher than you. On Moderate and above, Gald is never an issue and you'll easily have more than enough dosh to do all your purchasing and fusing and drop rates are heightened. You don't even have to minmax like a faggot, just continually fusing and upgrading your equipment will keep you in tiptop condition. Not to say that levels aren't important, but I'd say gear plays a bigger role in combat than your characters' innate stats.
Like one of the monoliths say, the game may actually be easier on Moderate or higher simply because you have the equipment and skills to cheese through the fights.
>>315294291 Levels don't really mean anything. I'm level 75 and I beat level 150+ bosses on hard (with really shitty equipment because I can't be bothered to grind the skill system. On the other hand, when I was level 60 I got my ass handed to me by lv80 field bosses.
If it's one-shotting you, just Armatize. If it's one-shotting you when Armatized, you're not ready yet.
>>315295321 >If it's one-shotting you when Armatized, you're not ready yet.
So, better equipment and skills? I haven't really delved into the skill system yet because it's annoying and just be using whatever new better weapon I come across. I think most of my character still have the basic 20+ to all stats.
>>315295662 You can also go kill mutants for +max hp orbs until you are out of getting one shot range. On hard, I honestly try not to get hit ever, because harder enemies WILL just one shot you if you do.
Reminder to not stockpile the herbs and use them whenever because they respawn, but don't dump all of them on one character, use it as you would an elixir since it replenishes both HP and SC, very useful during long dungeon runs. Also, when you level up the game uses your current stats as the basis for the stat increase. So better equipment and herb stats are definitely worth your time in the long run.
>>315296119 >replenishes both HP and SC, very useful during long dungeon runs That was never a major issue for me. You have a relativ fast autoheal for all seraphs and per armatization you could transfer hp to your humans. Only the fatigue (less and less sc at the beginning of fights) is a bit annoying, but it will only prolong fights midly. Due to enough save points you can just visit an inn regulary. But >Also, when you level up the game uses your current stats as the basis for the stat increase. thats rather interesting. Thanks.
The ending is so damn depressing, it's meant to be happy but it ends up being something straight out of the deepest trenches of sorrow. You don't even get a slight bit of romance to dull the sting and the DLC just twists the dagger even more.
I don't know if I'm just taking my time or other people were rushing, but I'm at about 34 hours and just finished the Wind Trial.
I don't know why people kept saying there isn't much to do and the open world map was useless. Generally after every major plot point like 4-5 sidequests open up that require you to explore and go out of your way. Or there's usually extra locations you can discover just going between cities.
Sure feels like a hell of a lot more to do than in Xillia and Graces.
>Alisha gets attacked by a malevolent rebel who doesn't want peace and is saved by Rose >They have quite a big catfight because Rose won't tell her about Sorey >This leads to them agreeing to disagree and Alisha isn't confident in who she is >Alisha forms a squire pact with Rose and they go to find the source of this new Malevolence >Turns out it's coming from Camlann >End up going through a huge dungeon, 11 fucking floors of that shit, while Alisha slowly figures out what her answer is and Rose won't tell her about Sorey >Come across Symonne being a bitch still >End up with them making it to the crater that is Sorey and Alisha declares her answer, that she can embrace all her sides and not just force herself to be one person >Ends with Lunarre cackling like a madman and threatening to fuck up Sorey infront of his friends, or his friends infront of him
So really a look into how much both Rose and Alisha cared for Sorey and how painful it is for both of them while reminding us that even though Sorey is doing his thing there is still evil out there.
I guess it depends on what they planned to do with DLC. I'd love for Beseria to continue the story and for them to not just tie up serious loose ends in a few random DLC. With Symonne still being crazy you have one insanely powerful person still wanting to wreak havoc on the world, then you have whatever brought Lunarre back to life and his desire for revenge driving him. You do see the malevolence swarm around Sorey during the ending but then it whisks itself off instead of dissipating, maybe it's what you said and he is the new lord of calamity.
Either way the ending left a lot open and it would be great to get concrete answers on it all.
We don't actually know that, even when Maotelus is fully purified Malevolence will still exist. Don't you remember? Even when he was the source for an army of shepherds they still had evil to fight against.
>>315302142 But it doesn't mean malevolence is gone forever. The land getting corrupted with malevolence was just Heldalf trying to plunge the whole continent in malevolence, it doesn't necessarily mean the living beings on said land couldn't generate their own malevolence, if it was fully purified.
>>315302962 Perhaps malevolence can be used as a indirect energy source. For example if the guards catch a criminal and he get a 10 year sentence, they will let him succum to a hellion, said hellion will work in a mill spinning the grinding stone and after 10 years, he will be purified and as a little bonus that guy won't even remember his time in the mill.
>play Xillia 2 >events that happen make Xillia looks like trivial bullshit
Assuming Berseria really is a Zesty sequel or something, it'll do the same to Zesty too right?
It'll shit on everything you've worked on by revealing that this endless cycle of Shepherds vs MUH LEVOLENCE is actually bad shit that's been masterminded by some puppetmaster, right? Sorey will be mindbroken by this revelation and become some edgy antihero.
I don't know, I really liked Symphonia and Abyss as well as what little I played of Vesperia; everything else I've played in this series just hasn't been as enjoyable to me. I think Xillia 2 is the closest I got to a "good" JRPG.
Are the key people from "Team Symphonia" still with the Tales team or what?
Maybe I missed something but why does Shepherd Michael exist? At the start of the game, the intro says that the Shepherds disappeared 200 years ago as they were unnecessary since the world was at peace during that timespan. But then we have Michael who was a Shepherd at least some 20 years ago, I'm not sure how old Sorey or Mikleo are.
So why did Lailah make a pact with Michael and why was Michael never talked about anywhere else in the game? You'd think founding a village and creating that huge ass Artorius Throne would leave some marks.
And then you have Heldalf which is said to have been breeding wars for quite a long time but he can't have been active for longer than Sorey and Mikleo's age. Was he just fucking around on other continents?
