>Yes, we are in the third month of development of Shenmue 3. The story and scenarios are now out of the planning stage and it is time to get the people, places and things to start fitting together into a world with proper dimension, adequate space, and appropriate scale to keep the feel and essence of all that is a Shenmue game.
>In this phase of the development, the major work being done is the map testing. Map testing will define the different areas to make sure they are neither too big, nor too small to get to that Goldilocks zone. This consists of looking at the layout of a certain space, and experimenting to make necessary alterations. For example, an outside area may feel too open. That space may be reduced by 20%, and the number of people there increased from 10 to 16, to affect the proper consistency and density of the area.
>All elements in the following screen shots are still in testing. Objects are being used as place holders, like the men in black suits, and Ryo is also an older model. Backgrounds and buildings are also still in the development stage and will see reworking. Shots for the two battle scenes were taken at angle to avoid spoilers as much as possible.
>The development team is in high spirits now that we have reached this stage where we are finally able to start testing. The studio has become quite the lively place as of late, even on Saturdays for some of us! We look forward to your continued support!
How well does Shenmue and Shenmue 2 Electric Boogaloo, emulate?
There is no other way I'm playing it so if not well... I doubt I'll regain interest in this series.
I remember enjoying the 1st one on Dreamcast many years ago though.
>How well does Shenmue and Shenmue 2 Electric Boogaloo, emulate?
From what i hear they emulate pretty well. I wouldn't know though since i still have my DC. If you like i can get you a few guides in a few minutes.
>Mfw Shenmue 3 will also come out for the Xbone
Not interested. I had one a long time ago and many of the games I was most interested in already exist elsewhere on platforms I have (PSP, PC, etc.)
Also I'm Canadian so everything costs too much lately.
I don't understand /v/, why can't it be both? Why can't it ever be both? Why can't you like one thing and not hate another thing? Both Shenmue and Yakuza are great, why do you have to be an elitist and make everything a competition?
>shenmue is great
Shenmue is the epitome of cinematic games that plague this industry nowadays, so of course it's a genre that fits this age. Yakuza is better than it in every way. Shenmue had its chance and nature selected it for extinction.
To the dude that wanted emulation info

Common problem on 4chan; when uploading the thumbnail gets corrupted and displays a different picture. I suspect it happens when another image somewhere else is being uploaded at the same time.
>you will finally get to brutally murder Lan Di
>Shenmue is the epitome of cinematic games that plague this industry nowadays
A lot of people that never played Shenmue don't realize that it actually has gameplay. QTES were a very small part of the game and helped advanced the story in ways that didn't completely take you out of the game while watching cutscenes.
Shenmue has Virtua fighter fighting mechanics with free flow battles, Exploration, mini games, etc.
It's more of a slow paced adventure game, it's nothing really like Yakuza at all and i hate when they're both compared.
It's not just the thumbnail, sometimes it uploads a different picture entirely.
I wanted to post a picture of my figure on /toy/ once but got this instead.
It's comparing apples to oranges and saying oranges are better because you like them better. Quality is subjective my man, you can't say "X is better than Y" and not at least back it up with a few points. Yakuza is awesome but the only similarities it shares with Shenmue is the setting.
Also, you're an idiot for replying to every post and just repeating "Yakuza is better!"
I don't really get it either. The Xbox was basically the Dreamcast 2, you can look it up and find out a bunch of shit like how several Xbox exclusives were originally developed as Dreamcast games, etc etc. Shenmue is more of a Microsoft franchise since the second game was a MS exclusive.
I'll tell you exactly what happened since i was apart of the fan campaign on Shenmuedojo.
After years of asking Sega about Shenmue the community started to aim for the big 3 console manufacturers.
Of course none responded until there was an article that was posted around 2 years ago with Sony employee Adam Boyes.
Boyes was saying that they were going to take request as they were interested to see what games fans wanted the most. The Shenmue community quickly mobilized and focused their efforts on bombarding Boye's twitter account as well as Gio.
About a year later another article comes out with Adam Boyes saying that Yakuza and Shenmue were the most requested games by far and that they would be announcing more about them soon.
Fast forward to that December and we got the Yakuza 5 localization news at the Sony experience.
Fast forward to June and we got the Shenmue 3 announcement.
Shenmue has a very dedicated fanbase most of which are older and have the funds to contribute to the project.
Shenmue 1 actually sold very well (a million copies) with Shenmue 2 only doing terribly because of it only being available in NA on the Xbox in it's very early years.
Peter Moore was partially responsible for this because he used Shenmue 2 as a way to secure his position in Microsoft games division looking to jump ship on a crumbling Sega.
He even did an interview about it here,
It's great to see Yu so energetic and engaged again.
The man truly deserves to make his dream project. I have faith that he'll deliver a good experience within the provided budget.
Maybe the people that played it on the Dreamcast, and Xbox have PS4's now?
PS4 have the largest install base so it's not crazy to those those people have one.
Also, who bought an Xbone (and even PS4) thinking "Yes, surely Shenmue 3 will be released!".
>Shenmue 1 or 2?
Incredibly different themes but i prefer 1 for the atmosphere and detail and 2 for the action.
>>Favorite character besides ryo?
Tough one, i'll have to go with Lan Di. Very mysterious character we know nothing about yet.
>>Do you think Sega will release Shenmue HD?
It will probably release a little before Shenmue 3
>Yakuza is better
Is that why Yakuza recycles the same assets game after game? Oh look! I'm in Kamurocho ..again -_- I sure hope I get forced to fight underneath the hobo shanty town AGAIN! I hope they score it with wanky Japanese butt rock AGAAAAAAIN!! :P
Shenmue 2 was great but lacked the overall detail of Shenmue 1 but that's to be expected since Shenmue 2 was telling a much bigger story and the scale was insane. It still has more detail than most "open world" games today.
Going to dump some of the real locations that Shenmue is based on.
Nozomi is literally chewing on canadian cocks. She's shit.
>one with a pointing hand
>one is a dr who's screwdriver
Even moped guy from Shenmue is here.
Same clothes and everything.
>Hear niggers chimping out outside of my home
>See neighbors pickup truck a shit maintained lawn
>Walmart down the block and several bodegas
>Tfw you will NEVER live in Yokosuka Japan
>is this franchise even any good?
One of my favorites but you either love it or hate it. Just emulate or get a dc and burn the game and find out for yourself.
It's basically a semi open world in a small city in Japan with a ridiculous amount of detail. You can open fucking individual drawers and open every closet for no fucking reason if you want to.
The fighting mechanics are similar to Virtua fighter games since it's by the same creator. The game plays out almost as a murder mystery where you're asking people around the town for information about your father's killer and what they saw.
Mini games, exploration, fightan, puzzles, arcade machines, and npcs that have a day/night schedule with a full background story on who they are.
Man, it's awesome and a bit unreal that Shenmue 3 is getting made, but the amount of hate it's been receiving because of it is sad to see.
I recall if Shenmue was ever brought up before this whole thing, people would mention how great of a game it was, and have nice discussions here and there.
Now it's nothing but "Nobody ever liked Shenmue fuck you hipster faggots I hope you die"
It's basically an open world RPG that takes place in 1980s Asia, following a teenager who is investigating his father's murder at the hands of a Chinese syndicate leader over two artifacts by asking people questions, learning new martial arts techniques and light puzzle solving. It's unique in that it has more interior & interactive detail than even a lot of modern open world games have where most everything is just window dressing
i think ill check it out. the fighting looks good and there doesn't seem to be any blonde people in it and it's the over aboundance of white/caucasain characters are what keep me from playing jap game t.b.h familia
I'm more upset by the fact that Shenmue 3 will definitely be a letdown, and maybe even a disaster. It's simply the fate of all kickstarter games.
Plus, Shenmue 1 and 2 wouldn't do well in today's environment. They were novel and amazing at the time, but "open world" has been done to death by this point. Shenmue 3 would have to become something else, something not-Shenmue to do well.
It's adventure game that have open world style, some minigames, and some fighting. It's very detailed for its time and even for today (like it's based on real life 80s time of Yokosuka, down to the weather on each days, or how the arcade games are real life SEGA arcades that you can actually play). It's also extremely comfy, hell, the game is made so you don't have to do everything in hurry and just enjoy stuff.
I would say it's aged. The controls are stiff, the areas are small and essentially quite linear, and compared to today's games there's not a lot of contents. But it's extremely well made and you just need to play it.
Just remember while it advertised as a fighting game, it's not. It's essentially an adventure game, there's only like 7 fights on Shenmue 1 alone and they're all scripted.
>It's simply the fate of all kickstarter games.
Not true man, wasteland and pillars were great kickstarted games.
Have some faith in Yu brother.
>"open world" has been done to death by this point
I would argue that Shenmue was one of the few games that actually did "open world" correctly. It had the detail to warrant that title.
>ohhhh...still i'll give it a try as long as the story is good.
Don't let that discourage you in the slightest bit.
1 tells a very humble story of a young naive Japanese kid that gets into some shit here and there for being too focused on finding his father's killer.
2 is fucking JAM PACKED with fights as Ryo matures and starts to really deal with the shadier types.
Building plans for a hotel in Shenmue 3
YU IS BACK
CHI YOU MEN PRISON CONFIRMED
>Tfw Ryo gets imprisoned by the chiyoumen and has to create crude tools to escape.
I bought Shenmue on launch day back when I was like 12 years old and I played the shit out of that game. It was one of my fondest gaming experiences and even to this day I still get all nostalgic every time I boot it up. The fact that Shenmue 3 is finally happening is just plain surreal for me.
I believe the first town is pretty far away from Shenhua's place and they made it sound like the hotel is going to be one of your first stops (that's where all the photos and guest book signatures of the high end backers are going, anyways).
Fucking great thread so far.
One of those threads that rarely happen on /v/ where it's just full on vidya discussion.
Anyway back on topic...
Yu looks very determined and is acting like a complete professional thus far. From what i hear dude is working insane hours and really putting his all into this.
that's why I was hoping her would finish it with this entry. If he wanted to have Ryo go on other adventures later fine but end this storyline now while he can because Yu's getting older and it's a lot of hard work and.. y'know...
>that's why I was hoping her would finish it with this entry.
I would rather not compromise his vision of how everything plays out. I understand your point though but it's a very unique situation. Who know what will happen at this point.
this makes me feel a little dirty but then I remember Ryo is only supposed to be 19 so.. no I was Ryo's age when this came out and I still felt dirty then
He's already had to cull so much of the story, already. There's chapters missing inbetween just Shenmue 1 and 2 alone.
He drew out this whole over the course of a decade. If he does never get to finish it, I hope he'll at least release all of his scripts/notes/art for the whole thing.
Yeah I could tell when he gets off the boat and that little kid thanks Ryo and I was like "thanks for what? what happened on the boat? dammit!" oh well anyone wanna go ahead and make a Shenmue Gaiden about what happened?
> "thanks for what? what happened on the boat? dammit!
I got you f.am
thanks for this but don't sweat the filters, you know who says that word? juggalos and we're better than that
Q: I heard there used to be "Chapter 2 - the Boat" between "Chapter 1 - Yokosuka" and
"Shenmue II," but actually, II begins with the scene Ryo disembarks from the boat.
There, the mother with a girl mentions something on the boat, doesn't she?
Yu-san: Yes. "Chapter 2 - the Boat" included in the original scenario has disappeared
Masaya: Yeah, that's right. The Boat! In fact, Chai reappears. He's survived being
knocked off into the sea at Yokosuka harbor, and fights with Ryo as an unseen opponent
on the boat. There was a scenario like that.
Q: Was the scene shot?
Masaya: Yes! We shot it pretty flamboyantly. In fact, some people Ryo meets on
the boat were supposed to see him again in the later scenario, saying like "ah, you're
the one on that boat...," and the story would expand from there.
Yu-san: Confronting Chai was a nice situation. We've finished the designs of the boat
completely, including the height of the deck, the length of the rails, and every thing.
The escaping route was arranged, too. Some spectacular action scenes were planned
to be unfolded, you know.
Masaya: All the motions were captured, too. I opened the door of the cabin and then
the story went so theatrically!
Q: Then, you had to cut those scenes tearfully?
Yu-san: Well... I cut them rather plainly. "Impossible to fit? OK, cut it," just like that.
Q: There must be plenty of scenes that had to be cut eventually, or motions weren't
used. Especially, as the motions of Ren are really wonderful, I honestly wanted to see
Takumi: I guess there should be tons of them, if we include detailed motions, too.
We shot quite a lot of fighting scenes that were cut.
I think everybody is well aware of that. It's just some news to talk about for Shenmue fans.
For sure, i'm pretty sure Yu did confirm that Ren will be playable.
Hope you enjoyed the short storied comics bros.
Any of you nigs see the Lan Di statue they're giving away?
Shenmue HD pretty much confirmed a few days ago
>Admitting that Sega has not done a “great job over the last four years” in communicating its brand values and “Yes, we want to innovate and back smarthphones and virtual reality but our key purpose is to go back to what the brand used to stand for and I think the buzz around Shenmue 3 shows that people love our legacy,” adds Rooke, who says Sega is exploring ways to re-release the original two Shenmue titles.
>“Sega was an innovator, the Dreamcast was offering online gaming as early as 1998. But perhaps back then we were pushing boundaries a little too soon. Nowadays we know what we’re good at and the strategy is to be more gradual. Over the next few years, we want to use engaging content and marketing to remind the public why they fell in love with Sega in the first place.”
The breaking & entering, trespassing and salivating in someone elses porrige zone?
If anything 'baby bear zone' would make more sense. This bothers me.
They should just stick with the placeholder model. Looks damn good. Don't want them to ruin it with unnecessary realism. I look forward to seeing what classic Sega games are playable in the arcade.
I wish I could buy shit like this but I don't have the money or the space to display it. Even my Warhammer army is stuck in a box in the closet because I have no-where to display it right now.
God these send chills through my body.
I know how >>315365037 feels. I kept hope for so long and this year like every time a rumor came up I kept myself from getting excited and I'm just so happy knowing it's coming out.
What would be amazing would be if you could carry over your shenmue 2 save from Shenmue 2 HD into Shenmue 3, as it was originally planned back on the Dreamcast. I don't know how plausible that would be, but it would make the old fans really happy.
>Is that why Yakuza recycles the same assets game after game?
this was literally the plan for the original Shenmue games
the first couple games would be the big budget releases with all the content and then consecutive games (of which many were planned) would be released quickly using the assets they had established
Yakuza's a yearly franchise, Shenmue was intended to be a yearly franchise but never got there
both are frankly better off not being a yearly franchise and I wish the Sega devs would stop forcing Yakuza to be an annual release thing already
I hope we get a Shenmue/Yakuza Zero crossover down the line too
Fortunately a game like Shenmue isn't nearly as expensive these days due to all the advances we've had in middleware. They had to make the engine for Shenmue 1 from scratch, while with Shenmue 3 they're using UE4. They're just trying to make another game like Shenmue and not GTAV, so I think they'll do fine.
People forget that a large portion of funds went into developing shit like day/night cycles, weather, scrapping the saturn version and starting over on the dc, AI routines. All of this could be done now by simply dragging pre-made modules into ue4 and adjusting them.
Half of the work is already done, the story is done, script is done, etc.
Canadian-fu, comin' through
I was born into shenmue im very serious i live in it right now its great really fantastic i really want to play as me because i am me and suzuki tried it it worked even though we do not understand how or why it works even though we created it over a decade ago build the house even though it couldn't my stand perfect for all of those that are waiting for shenmue3 to live in ill finally be fully upgraded into it when it comes out its been almost 2 decades stuck here even though I love it it can get draining always seeing the same people as soon as I import shenmue 2 I will live inside of that as a purgatory period between the wait for 3 I have explored everything in detail in shenmue 1 I still can have new conversations with the ai here so they speak to me on a regular basis it's going to be great cant wait for it really really cant
No mental breakdown no mental breakdown I do not think you understand what I am saying I said I was born into shenmue and what makes you think I wasnt think its something to reply back to but it wasnt worth it I helped create shenmue theough parallel life forces and c++ coding in 1999 when we created it it was a collaboration between this realm and the digital nothing can change that this isnt a joking manner
No mental breakdown no mental breakdown you want to y detest and understand i truly get it I do but like I said before shenmue is me I am shenmue we helped and collaborated for several years to make possible stop talking about things you do not understand you have no clue really it's funny but not to me you think it is but it is not I have said this several times throughout the journey you refuse to get it even though I do please shenmue 3 will have us all finally upgraded to tech 3.0 tech 3.0 new places new people to meet and share story with graphics don't Maarten because once you enter shenmue you are there same with animations you do not get it which is sad ok but dont laugh as it is not joking so stop new weather will be great too
A Shenmue/Yakuza crossover could be fun. Have Shenmue's core combat but incorporate Yakuza's heat moves into it.
Also the selection of minigames available would have to be nothing short of amazing considering the caliber of standard for this in both franchises
