What are some other massive blunders where the company tried to hide all actual gameplay from the customers until they had bought it?
I remember SW:TOR, they didn't allow anyone to touch it outside of their own gameplay demos, until the 1.5 hour video leaked and everybody realized how shit it actually was (where the 29:30 meme with the animations came from).
EA's stock crashed and burned and their financials tanked in the months after the SW:TOR blunder. It took over a year for them to recover, and only thanks to smartphone games.
Until this moment people (even on /v/) actually thought SW:TOR was going to be great
The things we had seen until then had nothing to do with this
>Until this moment people (even on /v/) actually thought SW:TOR was going to be great
you'd have to be stupid to have thought it would be great.
>even on /v/
as if /v/ isn't full of infantile kids/teens who have no idea how anything works and haven't been around long enough to know bad shit when they see it from a mile away.
It was obvious that there was never anything good about SWTOR. Incredibly obvious.
>GW2 tried to enforce an NDA and embargo with an open beta by plastering people's emails all over the screen so they can be tracked down by the company's Gestappo
That game had so many red flags I can't believe I fell for it
In November 2011, a month before SW:TOR launched, EA's stock was trading at ~$25 a piece
In July 2012, 6 months after SW:TOR launched, EA's stock reached its lowest point at ~$11 a piece, more than a 50% drop in 6 months.
EA only recovered because of smartphones and games like Real Racing 3 and Plants vs Zombies 2 making them huge amounts of money on iPhones.
Reminder that youtubes take down system is automated and literally anyone can easily get a video taken down for 2 weeks at the least if they want. If it's not a publisher doing it then it'll be asshurt fans
You can do the laziest shit. I know DSP is hated here, but he has been the victim of this. People found fan art he uses in videos and simply prove that it existed somewhere else before it was in his video and it's an automatic take down for 2 weeks while youtube reviews it. Youtube is scared of legal copy right stuff so they do this really broken shit that is easily taken advantage
I think it's funny that they think it can be taken down at all, look at how it's worked literally ever
Now instead of just being contained to a few videos people are content to watch it's now uploaded to dozens of sites across the internet being watched by hundreds of thousands of people and easily being downloaded and spread more instead of just being contained to youtube
Got banned from the steam Fallout 4 forums for posting a live stream link of the PC version in a thread with a guy saying "the current screenshots are fake and no one has actually played the game for real"
I was promptly banned for "link spam" even though I only posted it once, huge damage control.
Well gee, it's not like this has never happened before.
I'm lying, this happens all the time when people throw out gameplay footage before release and/or embargo. Hell, some companies go one step further and do the same for games that have already been out for years, like Sega, or Konami, or Nintendo.
It's actually pretty good now. They just did a soft reboot of it with a new expansion. It's basically the almost-KOTOR game everyone expected it to be at launch, only years too late.
Order 1886 pre-release stroll-through was attempted to be purged so people couldn't see how short and shit it was.
Don't have the screen grab on this device but the YouTube takedown notice said a full unedited playthrough of the game was 'deceptive'.
Are review embargoes even legally enforceable? Or is it just a matter of wanting to be on good terms with the dev/publisher so you get future review copies? Because if so, how the hell is that not a case of a conflict of interest?
Have fun! Remember to save it to piss off Todd.
Honestly, what are companies going to do if someone posts a review of a leaked game before the embargo is up?
Oh no, we won't send him a copy of our next game that he doesn't need because he pirated it, that'll show him!
As long as its not hosted on somewhere an automated copyright claim will get it taken down like jewtube.
simple, review sites get a list of what to do/not to do and have to obey that list or never get a review copy again.
IE Nintendo review rules is you can't talk about any secrets in the game and only what is publicly known(So for Smash they could only talk about the starting roster+lucina)
More hands in the game the worse the rules(Look up FIFA review rules and notice how long the list is)
Not legally enforceable but instead closer to private agreements. If lets say IGN breaks the rules EA set for peggle 2, EA can't really sue IGN but can demand the review be taken down and modified. If IGN doesn't comply then IGN is simply never getting another review copy and if they want to make a review they would be buying a copy on release
If you break embargo you don't get blacklisted by that publisher, you get blacklisted by EVERY publisher. If you work for a website, they get blacklisted if they don't immediately fire you, if you are a solo 'tuber or twitcher or whatever that's the last review copy you are getting from anyone ever again.
You only get to break embargo once in your career. You don't get a second chance because you stop getting review copies.
This streamer stood here waiting 30 seconds for this texture to load
>11 minutes across the map
>2 feral ghouls
>a super mutant
and i don't know if it was because the run was done at night but fuck man
the game is so visually fucking boring
I only have one question. When is this game set? 2277? If so does that by proxy make NV semi/non-cannon (or at least Bethesda's way of giving the finger to Obsidian)?
Salty NEETbeards remain furious their cringe RPG was taken from them by normies!
Yeah but like, the texture was glitched in that instance right? He could come back after the game world unloaded itself and it'd correct itself, the texture would load properly and shit right?
There's just no way anyone could look at that texture and say "Hmmmm yup, looks good. Nice job on that Tim".
Anyone have that picture of the wooden beams in Skyrim's before and after versions?
The modder didn't even change the texture it was something else that Bethesda had fucked up and it looked like this >>315384102
They never fixed it themselves
Well it depends wether I buy F4 like a year from now or not. Either way I will at least give the modders a chance to fix the cannon before I give my shekels to Bethesda - hopefully sooner rather than later. There needs to be a full dialouge system overhall first though desu senpai.
Bethesda forced them to release F:NV prematurely before the bugs were fixed and then didn't give them their 85-metacritic bonus (they had 84) forcing Obsidian to fire a lot of its staff and making basically no money on the game
If that isn't a reason to boycott a company I don't know what is, I've stopped buying companies' games for less (e.g. Rome 2's launch scam, another game where actual gameplay wasn't allowed to be shown before launch)
Check the beginning and ending points, it's an incredibly small map.
No one is going to buy this and not regret it
Its just fucking stupid that reviers get the copies two whole weeks before the game comes out. A game with this much hype was bound to get leaked. It also doesnt help that they also went in the dark after the short big leagues video. They should have released the gamescom or the quake video to tide over people. They have to give reviewers game at least 4-5 days before it comes out, they can release their review anytime they want.
>No one is going to buy this and not regret it
I will, in maybe two years for 10 buck at most, and at that point none of its flaws will be hidden anymore and mods will have fixed the hell out of those, and i´ll probably slip more money into the modders pockets than bethesdas.
Hopefully todd reads this somehow and despairs a little.
I find it always funny how they pretty much admit that their game sucks.
>oh shit they show the small map of our game!
>people will cancel preorders etc!
>BAN THE VIDEO FAST!
>THEY MUST NOT KNOW WE FOOLED THEM!
TOR is pretty high up there. Especially when the first live stream happened. That drove a lot of people from the game.
3 months later and the main capital city station was lucky to see 3 people in prime time hours.
all the modder did was change the uv maps.
bascically the uv map dictates how a texture is "glued" to a model/mesh.
this should have been a non issue.
bethesda employs a lot of untalented hacks.
My favorite moment was when Bungie flat out admitted that the original Halo 2 play demo was crated solely for E3. (the eventual full game was far less interesting and graphically demanding.)
They hadn't even started on the main game. It was made even better by the interviews later painting them as heroes for getting all the work done.
Considering how companies throw out DMCA like candies and have never faced a single lawsuit, no you really can't.
Same way how ISIS used a DMCA to get the adress of an islamist preaching to not support isis, and the onyl way he could get his channel back from google after the takedown was to submit real info to them (which is passed down to dmca claimant) and they got his adress.
Just curious, do you honestly see zero issues with FO4 or something? Do you honestly believe some of these anons are posting all of these things just to be contrarian and it has nothing to do with the quality of the game?
If the map was giant I would have instantly pre-ordered on the spot, dude. Now this is looking to be my first Fallout pirate , map size being a reason.
I'll still buy it later on a sale
I don't get the point of that. I can just wait until the game is out and look at reviews, play a demo or whatever.
Phil could have easily sued the guy/Google but knowing Phil, he doesn't even understand how intellectual property works. He thinks if he buys a video game that everything belongs to him on that disk and he can do with it what he wants just like buying wood in a market to build a house.
Deep Down is nothing but a showcase for PS4 graphics, Sony needed something to show at E3. The game has since fallen into purgatory over pay models and Capcom apparently has no intention of picking the game up again in the future.
People tend to buy things before they even know anything about it. That's why you should always pirate before you buy something.
>inb4 NO ONE DOES THAT
I do that. I'll pirate fallout 4, if i think it's worthy of a purchase, i will buy it.
Knights of the Old Republic 2 was a big one. Lucasarts only gave very specific game segments for review.
Most critics had no idea that the final game wasn't complete and that the final world was thrown together at the last min to get the game out for Christmas.
>even spic bethdrones think the story is mediocre (it's shit)
>simplified compared to NV, no karma and Skyrimized level up system
Why even get hyped?
I used to do that in the past. I got burned pretty hard on a game that was a huge buggy mess and it deleted my savefiles all the time weeks after launch. I never bougth a game on launch ever again after that. Only expection is Shovel Knight.
Pirating is a different beast, it's illegal here and people actually care. I look up reviews, demos an other stuff to get a good impression of the game before I buy it. It also is usually around 5-25 eurobucks so I don't regret it if the game is not as good. No need to "demo" the game and purchase it later if I feel it was worthy the money. My most expensive game on Steam in the last 4 years was Risen 1 for 30€.
The big difference from then to now is that most games back then were good and worth the launch money. Not the case anymore and especially because the games are buggy messes. Bought Pillars of Eternity a few days ago and there are still annyoing and commen bugs. As good as the game is right now, the industry doesn't make it easy on me anymore to justify buying a full priced title on launch. What is questionable though is that people still complain at some of the cheap game prices on Steam and go to shady sites like G2A and Kinguin to buy their cheap games even cheaper.
The reason no one files lawsuits against the big companies is that no one wants to take the risk of possibly losing the lawsuit due to lack of evidence or some shit. Suing one person on the other hand makes you at the very least on even ground to start with, and most big youtubers have big groups like Polaris and such I assume work with helping against stuff like false DMCA claims.
Not gonna bother with it. As bad as Steam is right now and how buying games was in the past, I never wanted to pirate video games. Of course there is a limit to my patience and that didn't apply to single games I wanted to play that were locked behind a 200-400€ console/handheld. They could have made a good chunk of money on me but they never choose to bring those games over to PC. But now Square Enix is porting their games over and the ports are in a horrible state. Too late now buddy. If they think I buy a 400€ device just to play like 5 games on it I really want, they can fuck themselves.
>get the job of UV'ing the entire world
>screw up a couple of textures
>you get moved to more critical work pre-release so you can't fix it
>some jerk-wad modder gets infinite time to walk around the game and tweak a handful of the worst ones and is praised as a hero
So the "official" reviewers can't even post their reviews for 6 hours until AFTER it has launched and been bought by millions of uninformed customers.
And while they're perfectly and legally allowed to post their review as soon as the game launches, Bethesda is threatening retaliation with no future review copies ahead of time if they break this (illegal) embargo for 6 hours post-launch.
At this point you have to consider gaming "journalists" as nothing more than accomplices.
>bought by millions of uninformed customers.
And this is the consumers fault, they should fucking wait and not pre-order/buy until reviews are out. Then the reviews will be forced to be dis-embargoed on release because they can't afford to miss the hype/launch window.
If a developer was confident in their game wouldn't they want to show it off as much as possible?
>everyone says Deus Ex: HR is shit because of screenshots and gameplay showcases
>suddenly a press demo "leaks"
>oops! it was totally not intentional! :^)
>suddenly /v/ plays it
>decides the game is awesome and gets hyped
It's like they did the exact opposite of what everybody else does.
Can't you just fucking kill yourself?
Do this already dying fucking cancerous board a favour and jump off a bridge along with the fucking dumbass redditers that immigrated like mexicans crossing the fucking border.
Surely this isn't the finished version of the game?
The guy walked for 11 minutes and saw like 10 enemies and a couple of coyotes. Usually Bethesda games have you tripping over enemies and deer and shit.
There were even any unique looking buildings or significant environment changes.
Unless this guy found the most boring, empty part of the game to run from edge to edge though, FO4 looks way out of character for a Bethesda RPG.
Because if they leaked a proper leak of Fallout 4, it would sell jackshit. As it is, they can just get shills and Bethdrones to throw aspersions over the legitimacy of the leaks and people will give them the benefit of the doubt.
First day on 4chan senpai?
>Surely this isn't the finished version of the game?
I have no idea if I should answer you or not
You think you're smart, but kiddo, you haven't even been here a fucking week, its real fucking obvious you faggot weeb.
Keep your dragon dildo up there, you faggots seem to need attention whenever you can get it. Time to leave this board in the dust it looks like, because flaming faggots like you seems to be the average poster nowdays, how far we've fallen.
How fucking pathetic you bunch of underage faggots are. Pathetic.
East Coast and West Coast had no relation whatsoever. Even ther BoS factions ideologically different, hell even chicago is a distant land far far away for both of them. FNW had more to do with mexico (baja) than rest of former US
You look confused old man. Tell me, what troubles you?
Not really. Hype is always stronger than reality.
Letting someone cook up a bunch of hyperbole in their head is the primary way games are sold now. Showing them the actual product, even if it is good, would probably do damage to the perception.
It's a 'day 1' 'pre-order' 'season pass' industry. It's designed to take your money before you ever touch the product, so it's not surprising they want tight control of what you see.
The only way they would want to show a game as much as possible is if they thought it was good AND no one was talking about it.
Have fun sucking eachother off daily, you furry faggots.
I know you all go to reddit, it wouldnt have been obvious a few months ago but now it shines like that glow in the dark horse cock you shove up the ass on saturdays.
What a fucking shame, all these /v/ memes and stupid fucking acronyms. They don't mean shit now that you cancerous faggots have taken over this already shit board, at least back then it used to be fun, but now you faggots smeared it with your ass juice. Good riddance but a god damn shame it had to be you faggots that ended it.
Where's the stream?
At this point we should have got someone to stream the whole game via a leaked copy
What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.
>The only way they would want to show a game as much as possible is if they thought it was good AND no one was talking about it.
But isn't that how it was in the first place? I barely knew anything about new games back in the day and the only way to get information about them was in magazines which had mostly just text and a few pictures. Sometimes even a few videos of gameplay were allowed to be published.
You guys kinda forgot that the whole charm of a new game is to play it blind. There is always a risk that you are let down no matter what, you just take a quick glance at reviews to be sure that your not buying a bunch of dead rats in a pouch instead of the promised gold.
He's got a fucking point ill give him that.
I actually agree with this guy in all honesty, i've been posting and shitposting on /v/ for 5 years now and even i don't consider myself that old, you faggots show you are not more than 2 weeks old on this site pretty easily, and i gotta agree with him on the other note that you guys suck dick, you keep spamming weeb shit like desu and senpai and shit but to be honest i kinda started getting bored of /v/ since a while back what with the whole mlp board and bullshit, and fucking vivian and shit, but i think ill take this opportunity to say this.
oh look yeah i can spoiler too you filthy faggots. I think i'm gonna stop coming to /v/ too so that i don't have the to shame myself by associating with you disgusting faggots. It was fun a few months ago but now it's pretty obvious this board is completely dead and only maggots have infested its carcass.
Adios, you reddit 9faggot cockroaches.
>lightning causes radiation
Jesus, Todd, get your shit together
>get video flagged for song
>it was a remix
>video brought back just because the claim was the name of the song, but it didn't state which version
Now I'm confused old man. What is this thing you call a furry and why can't I understand the other lines you spoke to me? It's like you used a different language not native around here or on the outer ring of this kingdom.
You think this is the only one he did?
You think he had time to sit around and check this shit all day? Fuck no, there were thousands of these and one or two slipped through the cracks.
>the 10 commandments aren't actually the 10 commandments
>now instead of being faithful and not killing people we have "don't boil a goat in its mother's milk"
Why? That last part is so random
A media embargo is an agreement between journalists and the marketing or PR reps promoting the product.
It is not illegal, they are extremely common especially with product launches and not limited to gaming at all. A journalist could choose to break the embargo but they would probably have difficulty finding work again.
why is games having shitty, unfinished endings even a thing
you'd think you'd make the start and beginning of the game first and then start putting in the shit in the middle
you could play a game missing half the middle content and not even notice it but a shitty last level is obvious
Nowadays you don't even get dead rats in a pouch.
You get 75% of one dead rat in a pouch, with an extra 5% duct taped onto it since you pre-ordered the pouch, and you have the ability to purchase a season pass to get 15% of the rat as it's released over the next few months, with the promise of more rats being available for $60 USD later.
Dude, I actually like bethsoft games, but you should check out that modder's page before you spout off bullshit like that. He fixes SO many of those busted-ass uv maps. And there ARE a lot.
Why contain it?
Let it spill over to the schools and churches..., le the bodies pile up in the streets!
In the end ... they´ll beg us to save them.
Yet more senseless defending of something that Bethesda SHOULD actually be shamed for. Thousands of those maps were fucked to all hell, but why the fuck am I still talking to you, it's not like you're actually going to see for yourself.
>invisible walls to stop you entering the water and the end
>25% of the map is water
BLUNDER OF THE DECADE
Yeah buddy just goes to show that you've never made a game yourself before. This stuff happens, it's just a part of any decent sized development. In the real world we have deadlines, and it we waited until we caught every minor little thing then your games would never see the light of day. That's just how things work. Literally every other company out there does this.
>It took over a year for them to recover, and only thanks to smartphone games.
This is why /v/ should NEVER talk about shit they know nothing about. EA didn't just recover from 2012 times but increased over 5 times in value since then and it wasn't because of mobile games.
/v/ is fucking retarded when it comes to financials, stick to talk about games because about money /v/ is full of retards.
Basically, it's an agreement with the company to get a game early. They give a free copy early if you agree to play ball with them.
However, you can still go to non-Gamestop video game shops and hope they will sell you a copy early.
I hate to be "that guy" but how long does it take to walk over the map in previous Bethesda games?
Watched about 7 minutes then I got bored and skipped to the end.
Buddy didn't see any places of note, I have to wonder if he was purposefully avoiding landmarks or settlements. Feel free to watch it for yourself; he is in a forest 95% of the time.
One thing that the player may have had no control over was the fact that he didn't see any thing other than his companion(?). Yes he did see 6 npcs of various varieties but don't Bethesda games usually have a lot more? I remember playing Oblivion and always running into deer and random raiders in the wilderness. Even Fallout 3 had a world ripe with creatures and characters.
They all are 'big' in that they'll feel big while your running around, doing quests and exploring.
It's only if you run from end to end, with no stopping with tcl or god mode, that you'll notice the true map size.
Remember those books they used to make with cheat codes and tips for all the games in one book? I used to love those things. Sometimes when I was a kid I'd just flip through them and wind up buying games solely on the basis of which ones had the coolest sounding cheats.
I miss those days sometimes...
They still sell those massive cheat books for current games
With shit on the cover like "Unlock everything!" "Special Weapons, bonus tracks!"
But 95% of the 'cheats' are just lists of game achievements....
What ever happened to cheat codes anyway? It seems like you hardly see them anymore. Did developers just decide they were pointless with everything being piss easy to look up on the internet or something?
Dlc and trophies. GTA iv was about the last AAA game to have them, but even then they were tame compared to sa, and disabled achievements if you ever used one. Fuck that shit.
Man, that makes me kind of sad, but thinking on it that's probably exactly right. Like >>315397509 is exactly the kind of shit I remember usually being hidden behind cheat codes, you'd get all kinds of weird quirky weapons or vehicles that weren't in the main game but you could unlock with a code.
Sad that developers want to hide that stuff behind paywalls now...
I'm really feeling the Star Wars hype right now and I actually reinstalled SWTOR. 5 years later and the game actually feels like it's finished. They streamlined the leveling experience so you just do the story missions and you can solo all the content. As a single player RPG it's pretty fun. People should give it a second chance.
I'd also add that I'm not a sub. I'm preffered (bought something on the cash shop/own the original game).
>it's been half a decade since SW:TOR
