PS3 has Ryuu ga Gotoku Kenzan and a shitter version of Ishin. PS4 has the better version of Ishin. Not interested in the ones set in modern times.

Well if you get a ps3, you're getting to play two games instead of one and it's cheaper.
Of course there is a chance that the ps4 may get another game in the future that ps3 wont get.
I would still go with the ps3 for now. Ps4 really doesn't look like it will be worth owning until late 2016 or early 2017.

Sega booted out tons of localisation staff and went on to focus well profiting games in the west (Sonic, Total War, Alien, Football Manager) and that's that. Then Sony footed the bill for it to come out.

Having daily threads after Yakuza 5 launch could be helpful for getting people into the franchise. If the threads gets large enough and gets shit on by shitposters then it might be time to migrate to /vg/.
Yeah, that's mostly the same problem for me too. My PS3 is pretty old, and even if I had enough memory on the thing to download the game, I don't think I would in the first place since I'd have to drag out the console. A real shame.

Toshihiro Nagoshi graduated with a degree in movie production and joined Sega shortly thereafter, working for the second arcade department (AM2) at Sega under Yu Suzuki as a CG designer. His first title was Virtua Racing as a chief designer, and afterwards he would create his own racing game, Daytona USA, where he was producer, director and chief designer. Then, he would create more arcade racing games with Scud Race in 1996 and Daytona USA 2 in 1998. By 1998, Nagoshi had his own arcade department, where he worked on SpikeOut.
In 2000, Sega separated its in-house R&D departments from the main company and established them on 9 semi-autonomous subsidiaries, with each subsidiary getting an elected president as a studio head. Toshihirio Nagoshi became head of Amusement Vision, where he further contributed to Sega's arcade line-up with Planet Harriers, SpikeOut sequels and spin-offs. For the Dreamcast he remade his very first game, Daytona USA, on the Dreamcast, as Daytona USA 2001. As Sega became a third-party, he moved out of arcade development. Amusement Vision became most known for its for work on the Nintendo GameCube, with the first two Super Monkey Ball titles in 2001 and 2002, and F-Zero GX in 2003, which Nagoshi made in conjunction with Shigeru Miyamoto. There are 2 starting points.
If you want to see a steady quality progression, then emulate 1 and 2, then play 3 and 4.
If you want to play already good Yakuza game, start with 4.
I was one of those people that bought PS2 ports of PS3 games well into like 2008 or 2009 and trust me, you're better off just buying the new console if that's what interests you.

I hope we're able to have some good Shenmue threads when 3 comes out. But with 3 being a kickstarter game and all, I still have a lot of doubts that they'll be able to pull it off, especially when you consider how expensive Shenmue 1 was.

He's a grappler, or at least, that's that's how I tended to play him. Like, imagine him as a mix between Saejima and Tanimura. Most of his rush attacks combo into grabs, similar to a few of Kiryu's moves (such as the leg grab), and very reminiscent of Tanimura's stuff.

I wouldn't necessarily say defensive, though he does have a counter that ends with him grappling the opponent, allowing you to throw or attack.
I still feel like Yakuza 3 was the comfiest game of them all.
That whole Okinawa, orphanage, the beach, fishing, etc.
The only issue I had with Isshin is that it is immensely grindy. I was 75% through my second playthrough, doing everything, and I hadn't maxed a single skill tree. Only brawling and single sword were past lv 25, although I had reached 25 with sword and gun, though I hadn't finished the training yet.

I remember someone came over with an actual real gun and finished everyone off with a headshot or something along those lines but Saejima still took the fall. Who was that?
Shinada ends up sucking a little bit if you play him as a brawler, since his specialty is counter grappling, and most bosses and stronger enemies are immune to that shit.
His weapon stuff is pretty strong, but since this is not a spin-off game, using weapons ends up feeling a bit limited. He also can't use baseball bats.
Yakuza 3 also had one of the best final boss battles.
Also, has Sega decided to lower the difficulty in the later games?

I'd assume that a large number of them are, yeah. Yakuza is very similiar to Shenmue, had the same in-house SEGA production crews, and is largely considered a spiritual successor. They are still different games but anyone cam see the similarities the same way Onimusha and Resident Evil are similiar.

He had great moves (so much so that later games reuse them all the time)m though. Fight had nice music and a pretty climactic feel to it, too.
It's the best fight in the game - without gimmics (Lau-Ka wasn't fun because of them) or bullshit sudden insta-death QTEs (like Yakuza 2 finale)

Mine doesn't compare to Ryuji of course. I'm just making a comparison and observation that the bosses have been easier with progressive games. The AI was not as aggrasive, as an example Majima gave me problems in Yakuza 1 but in 4 he doesn't move about as much.
At least Mine had an awesome theme going for his fight.
why don't more games include real life brands for beverages and food. It creates so much extra atmosphere and sucks you into the setting even more. I love reading the descriptions of all the drinks in bars and wish they did the same for food.

I'm partial to Bowling myself. Despite being a mini-game they really put the effort in to make it look, feel, and sound satisfying when you knock down a load of pins, pick up a spare, or completely whiff.
I'm partial to bowling, but the crazy shit like the water fall training in Kenzan to the bullet hell shooter in Ishin are so memorable on how bizarre they are. Fuck that massage parlor crap, that whole quickly use the left stick to quickly get the bar up by spinning clockwise is completely pointless.
Fishing got way better in the newer titles like 5 - 0 which I love.

Like a said times before, it's Sega's own fault:
1) Present a new IP as a GTA clone when market has tons of them and people are tired
2) Make a horrible dub that ruins the mood. Don't forget to spend money on famous actors... and butcher their perfomance with bad sound direction and editing.
3) Don't promote any other game after the failure of the first one, but keep localizing it (so you can one day fuck over growing fan-base and say "we did all we could").
Ishin could've been a good PS4 early title, profitable one.

Well not hostess per say, but yuujos which work the same way except writing wise and yeah Ishin has yuujos as well.
It got annoying in Kenzan because you had to beat them at parlor games to advance their progress bar and some games the AI basically cheat and the more expensive girls are way harder to beat.
They've really up the facial capture with the new engine 5 has. Not complaining that we're only having 5 hostess since we're getting a large package of minigames, hell Haruka's entire story is literally one gaint minigame.

Play 1 & 2, and if can import the HD Edition and use a guide because its worth it. Kenzan, 3, 4, Dead Souls, 5, Ishin, and 0. The latter two are also on PS4 which I'm gonna have to say, are the definitive versions and feel silky smooth with the 60 fps.
50. Yeah, you can focus on your favorite, you gain both free levels and levels in a specific tree. So if you maxed out the single sword tree by using free points, you can replace these free points with sword points and use the free points you got back to level another tree.

I suppose, you are playing an old game and need to get good at it since its an actual game and with nuance to it, but you with infinite reties and you're more on the race against the clock to beat it under an hour which isn't too bad and it could have been a lot worse.
Its not easy peasy, but its manageable since there are plenty of strategies to take care of each opponent.
I don't buy used hardware. Seems like a bad idea, especially if I don't plan on ever replacing it/upgrading it.

They only do that through PS Now. Which fucking blows because it's always laggy unless you have fiber internet or something.

Yeah besides VF2, which you can cheese enemy opponents anyways, and gold which thankfully someone wrote up a useful guide to make it piss easy, nothing in the game will make you want to rip your hair off like 3 or something like in Dead Souls ultimate battle throwing match.
Same goes for Ishin and 0, besides like two luck based trophies, they're manageable games in comparison to 3. Like 5/6 difficulty, the 6 being the length to get the plat to 3 being 7.5/8 because of how unforgiving the mini games could be and ultimate challenge actually being quite hard at times.
Depends on your version. I had just the right model when CFW first happened with Kmeaw. So all it required was a dongle install. 5 mins tops. I did lose PSN.
Nowadays there are stuff like 3k3y which does require opening up the PS3, but it's supposedly undetectable by SONY and allows you to connect external NTFS drives.
Yakuza story summery KIWAMI
Kazuma Kiryu is an up and coming yakuza from Tojo Clan. His nickname (Dragon of Dojima) says it all - he is loyal, strong, well-spoken and honorable man.
Everything's great for Kazuma - he has a loving stepfather, great friend Nishki, and wonderful girlfriend Yumi. And to top all that? he's going to have his own crime family.
One night something terrible happens - Nishki kills his and Kazuma's own boss, Dojima, because the latter tried to rape Yumi. Knowing full well that this is a hanous crime in yakuza society, Kiryu decides to take blame for the murder. After all, Nishki has an ill sister to look out for. And so, Kazuma goes to jail.
Kazuma is released - his foster father bailed him. Apperantly, someone robbed Tojo Clan, and it's up to Dragon of Dojima to find stolen 10 billion yen.
Everything's changed - Nishki's sister died, he and got his own clan and became a jerk. Yumi dissapeared without a trace in 1996.
Soon after his release Kazuma finds a key to it all - a young girl named Haruka, who claims to know Yumi and the fate of 10 billion yen.
Kiryu joins forces with detective Date and the unlikely trio starts the search for truth.
Long story short:
Stepfather dies saving Haruka and says that he murdered Kazuma's real parents. He then took Kazuma to an orphanage where he raised him, Nishki and Yumi (children of other yakuza victims).
Yumi is actually Haruka's mother.
Haruja's father is a corrupt polititian who stole 10 billion yen.
Kazuma briefly becomes the new head of Tojo Clan (The Fourth Chairman).
Polititian kills Yumi (accidently, he wanted to kill Kazuma, but Yumi stood on his way).
Nishki acts as a bad guy most of the story and gets his ass kicked by Kiryu, but redeems his actions by blowing up money, polititian and himself, saving Kazuma and Haruka.
Kazuma lost all those who were dear to him and it takes Date to snap him out of depression. Kiryu decides to raise Haruka in memory of his lost love.
Yakuza 5 is just a kickstarter for the future of the games in the West. And it's like 30 bucks, you cheap bastard.
But I get you, this will be my first game I buy on my hacked PS3 and it's hard to do. But 100 copies can be live or dead in the West ( the games sell so low here).
The entire series put together hasn't sold that much in the west.

The appeal of the Edo period alone would get different fans who want that more than the modern era, which you will see every now and then on threads and forums.
And again, it isn't as hard to market it, just show the fucking games off at press conferences in the west, show people footage of certain moments in the story to set the mood and then show gameplay and heat moves up the ass, with plenty of minigame shots to go along with it. Maybe some banners on video game related websites, send out preview builds or at least have them at conventions.
These are what they do in japan and more, but they won't even try since 1 didn't sell as much as they wanted with that all star cast. But that was a horrible job and they have only themselves to blame for it, not fans.

Those were niche to begin with even in Japan, anon. They never sold that extremely well, and according to XSEED WotS 4 did at least 50k on PS3 as a digital only with no marketing whatsoever.
Plus no offense to that series as I love it too, and its dead because Japan's marketing collapsing and lower sales, not the West's fault, but Ryu ga Gotoku 2 edo period games surpass it many ways.
And we aren't going to see them because they can't even market the mainline games well, I mean why the hell is it called Yakuza? You aren't in the Yakuza and are doing unlike Yakuza things, and the spin off games have largely nothing to do with the Yakuza. They wanted to pass it along as Japanese GTA which was a huge mistake.
Like I get it, even Naughty Dog changed with the times with games like J&D 2 and 3 because of the release and success of GTA3 as mascot platformers were apparently dying As a business they need to follow some trends.
I sympathize, but its foolish for markets to try and trick players into a game when it has its own merits to stand on its own two legs and in ways better than the game they want to market it as, as a facade and not the game itself.

Those aren't really WotS games though and aren't even as good and I point I bring up of it being niche is because of the how the game is designed and that its extremely low budget and has no marketing even in Japan unlike Ryu ga Gotoku.
Yet the "Too japanese" feel is what gives it the appeal because your embodying a vastly different culture, almost like an exchange student program ad the insane attention to detail of the cities and little businesses that make up the exploration.
The only thing I agree is that the game's release is an issue as its almost 3 years after the release in japan and selling only as a digital download on a last gen console. If they keep their sales expectations reasonable it could succeed or enough for them to reconsider and give the series a chance on PS4, and no I doubt it will sell as bad as Dead Souls.

rig to run an emulator on yet. However, I have one of the older PS3's that can run PS1 and PS2 games through that built in emulator. If I burn a Yakuza 2 ISO onto a disc and put it in my PS3, would it work?

No it isn't. It reuses assets like crazy and beyond new coats of paint the stuff hardly changes. If anything, most of the money is funneled towards licensing music and ads of in-game locations and products.

It's Japanese anime shite. Yakuza is not anime, it's literally weeaboo tier stuff so you can be part of their ebin culture (for us) for Japanese players who it is aimed towards to it's just to make them at home.
If any other company did what they did with the main setting of Kamuracho I'd probably be less into it, but feeling as if you're witnessing and creating history, which gets revisted, continuation, and or just simple construction projects start in one game but don't get finished until the next is so cool.
It makes you feel invested and rewards you for sticking with the games all the way through, and that's why I always recommend the PS2 games and say to hell with those shitty retrospects in 3 and 4.

I do enjoy that stuff, unlike most western fans, but 10 hostess in Yakuza 4 was a bit much even for me ( and you need like 10 visits each to see all the dialog).

Spin offs are almost like tests, alpha for new mechanics in main games. Like Kenzan to 3, Dead Souls to Binary Domain, Ishin for switchable style in Zero, even Kiwami, which will be Zero with one city and one character.
Personally I'm waiting for BO3 this year.
Animations - yeah, they didn't really change since the first game (5, though, has more frames).
But everything else refines every game.
Like - 5 has hunting and driving, both of which are new features with new animations, game mechanics and sounds.
Base game feels the same, yeah, but details get changed, improved.
It's the best kind of game, in the middle ( that shit existed before 2007).

It sold over 200K in like a month or two in Japan with the PS3 version outselling it like Ishin by a margin, with the Chinese market buying about another 200K in a month mostly the PS3 version, just google it and you will find it pretty easily I think.

For what I've heard the actor for Tanimura is popular and maybe had other job offers to take also it may be because his plot have been already solved by the end of the game and making him appear in other games may be overdoing it

I was able to emulate Yakuza 1 relatively well, but with Yakuza 2, using D3D 11 makes everything blurry. Using D3D 9 causes frame drops everywhere.
I think I was using these settings but I'll double check when I get home. I'm on i5-4690 and GTX 970

Try OpenGL, it works pretty good
I like the Nair stuff but that was about it really in regards to him. His style felt weird to me, it was a pretty small moveset with heat moves off of everything but they all lacked the punch that heat moves usually have (due to him being a cop and all that)

All the styles in 4 and cool and all, but Tanimura style was the most different and interesting. He was my favorite.

I liked some of the combat tracks, but I agree they abused it a bit too much especially for Majima's style tracks.
One of the reasons I hate 3's plot even more, just felt like they took a giant dump on the previous game's plot.
The first game is kind of stiff in terms of combat, but the combat also greatly improves from 1 to 2, and combat continues to improve throughout the series.
Also 1 has a pretty bad English dub while all of the other games use the Japanese audio and English subs
If you like the general idea of 1, though, I think you should stick with the series
