git gud and just like make game
Hey, for devlog which is better?
Make a company name and post the progress from the game on the company blog, then when the game is released, make a page for the game
Make a devblog for the game progress and when is finished post on the company blog?
Company site of whatever variety with bullshit related to particular game on the page for that particular game
stupid to get people accustomed to going anywhere but your company site, and stupid to have the information about a game on that site anywhere but the page for that game
No thanks , i´m love my waifu like she is
You want the library for libgdx, which is JAVA?
Use the library directly, also source is included and try to load some of the xml examples http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~cs8k-cyu/bulletml/bulletml0_21.zip
>earliest trailer released in 2014
Still feel bad for him.
Post game so i can practice making stupid ass music made out of pure boredom, for fucks sake. I'm not expecting you to pay me, i don't want to collaborate with you. Heck, i don't even want to post it online so i can get those cheer-up messages every loser with low self-esteem is looking for. I shouldn't have posted at all, maybe you'd be posting games already, but probably not.
- agdg sure is gay today!! -
>update :: a -> a
>update :: IORef a -> IO ()
Though I'm looking at the library that defines KeyboardMouseCallback and it doesn't seem like you have much choice in the matter.
Poorly designed library, IMO.
What if I use an intermediary function?
You sound like you know what you're on about when it comes to this language. Am I just going to have to trudge through some of the tutorials/docs/theses/hoogle they give us to get proficent?
Yeah, I would write your actual code to use pure functions as much as you can. Then at the top level where you actually have to interface with the library, use it to modify your IORef.
Personally, I got good at Haskell through exploring the implementation of programming languages. I'd say keep at it, and keep trying out your own stuff as much as possible instead of just copying the tutorial code.
Reposting to >>121415734
because I hadn't noticed there was a new thread.
Just scenery crap I threw together pretty quickly
>only use those trails when you have a temporary buff going on or something, not normally
yup, that's the idea
any suggestions? I wanna make it more juicy
nope, art is from another agdg'er
One Anon here is working on a metroidvania game. He was posting progress-webms quite regularly until someone posted >>121413984, which looks like his game, just better and almost finish. Considering when the first trailer was released and the state of the game it's very unlikely that the SlainDevs stole the idea and I don't think ClerentDev was even aware of that game. It's just a really shitty coincidence.
Well if it makes you feel any better one of the documentary crew rescued the cub, despite being paralyzed it lived a full life in a wildlife shelter in Tampa. FL
not really. They continued to film the mother after she abandoned it and when they came back it had been eaten by vultures
I just find it really fucking funny when people abbreviate GLSL like GLslang
>Realize I should probably add the framerate display to debug mode
>It's about time
>Debug mode is activated by F1
>Set up the text data structure
>The whole nine yards
>Make text appear is relative position to camera, because duh
>Compile and run
>"W-where is it"
>Literally set up hundreds of texts like this before, I don't get it
>Set the text right on the camera's center
>"What. The. Fuck."
>Blank-stare at code for an hour because I KNOW everything's how it should be
>Then it dawns on me
>I never fucking pressed F1 while testing the thing
So, does protocol state I should shoot myself now or what?
Should probably not be devving at 2 am, right?
ya, I recomend using the camera buffer.
> Step 1: Say you make music

I'm biting bait or you are mentally instable.
Hey dude, if you're still around, thanks for the feedback. I was thinking the same thing about disabling the collision with the yellow blocks, so good to have some confirmation there. I'll work on the restart times and collision hitboxes too.
Not him, but I would love it if the stage walls were slidy, that would make the gameplay way better if you ask me. Also level 5 should be moved later 1 or 2 levels.
Also, make the restart screen skipable ffs!
I'm just venting, really. Stuff like this happens to me all the time. Butt fuck, it annoys me when it happens,
At least I get relieved that I figure out what's going on, nothing I hate more than my own lack of understanding.
Alright, I could see how slidy walls would make it more fun, I'll put that in. Level 5 was put in there to introduce the red obstacles, but maybe it's too brutal of an introduction? I can push it back and put an easier one first.
I think I'm going to keep the death screen as it is, but allow the player to press R to instantly restart the level. Would that work?
By moving level 5 later I meant that 6 and 7 are notably easier. If you make the walls slidy then it will no longer be that hard. The thing is that it's hard to manuver in such a tight space without touching the ceiling losing momentum and falling to your death.
>I think I'm going to keep the death screen as it is, but allow the player to press R to instantly restart the level.
As long as you press R during the death screen you are golden.
Oh ok, I get what you're saying now. That makes sense. I went ahead and changed the friction on all the walls so something much lower, so I'll playtest it and see how it goes.
>As long as you press R during the death screen you are golden.
Yeah, press R literally anytime to restart. Glad I have people to remind me of things like this.
I'm just gonna program my computer to make an engine for me
What are the qualifications a game should have to be submitted for demo day? is my game too much of a piece of shit at this point to be submitted?
>What are the qualifications a game should have to be submitted for demo day?
None, just attach a .txt with instructions of buttons and what can be done if it is too cryptic and you don't feel like writing it in game.
aka. "There's 3 islands that you can visit right now, use boat with E"
So you don't get people looking around the first screen, going "Is that it? Looks like it." and closing the game.
how many /agdg/ers have made it? has anyone here created a particularly successful game? what about a really obscure/nameless sole dev's game becoming somewhat well known?
pls give me hope desu~
I am a nobody but my game is pretty gud. Should I make a devblog-style thing attached to my own name, a page for the game itself (FartSimulator.com) or something else? I don't really have a company.
> clearing the snow for interiors
I really don't think there's a fixing that. You'll have to use different materials or finnagle with worldspace (super not recommended) or multiple sets of UVs
You mean your own real name?
No, unless you have really thick skin. Real name blogs are for profesional use only (aka, portfolios). You can repost whatever you are proud of there.
I recomend a
tumblrblog for your game, and if you feel posting random progress is your thing, a personal blog (Nick name only) which you link to.
> Hasn't seen the regular op pic with the steam agdg games
>You mean your own real name?
>No, unless you have really thick skin. Real name blogs are for profesional use only (aka, portfolios). You can repost whatever you are proud of there.
are you implying that people will bully me or something?
Yes. Please don't take it lightly, I know you might shrug it off now, but I've seen grown fucking men break.
It is a serious decision, if you are confident in your work, then go right ahead. The thing is if trolls find you entretaining, if you use your real name theres no going back.
>only need a screenshot to 100% copy a game
>don't have my own project
>sit all day long on /agdg/ to steal ideas
Sooner or later you will post a screenshot
>The thing is if trolls find you entretaining
Trolls only find you entertaining if you feed them
>but I've seen grown fucking men break.
Tell me more. What kinds of psychotic bullying can the Internet dish out that would make me break?
Nope, I'm talking about literal confidence and being able to keep a cool head at all times. If you can take puting something out into the public and only getting shitted on and mocked and go "they are right" or "they are wrong" and move on to the next thing.
I guess I don't understand what you mean. Why would people randomly troll the fuck out of me, and how is it relevant to my name? I mean I can easily just stop blogging whenever I want, can't I? I don't think I'm going to publish code--just webums and stuff
>Hi I am Billy Johnson
>I am making GAME
>GAME will have features X,Y,Z
>1 year later
>guys I have to drop Z it just doesn't work and I want to release the game soon
>FUCKING BILLY IS SCAMMING US
>I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS GAME AND NOW IT'S SHIT
>GUYS GUYS I GOOGLED AND I FOUND A BILLY JOHNSTON WHO WORKS FOR THE GOVERNMENT, COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT
>HOLY SHIT COULD MOZART BE ALIVE?
>LOOK AT HIS FACEBOOK PAGE
>A BLACK GUY
>KUCK KUCK KUCK KUCK
Might be one guy, might be 20 but there are always people like this.
you can reply to all of them and say the truth. for instance
how am i scamming you? i can assure you im not
why is it shit? with more feedback i can make it better
that is false, i do not work for the government
mozart died centuries ago, friend
yea it's a facebook
that's a lie im not black, nothing wrong with being black or gay though
lol i dont have a gf xD tfw no gf
Feathers of Ma'at act like boss keys, you put it on the scale and it activates the boss fight.
Is this your first day on the Internet?
Look, it doesn't matter, just make the game blog and move on from there. My advice is just that, use nicknames on the internet for as long as you can.
If you feel there won't be a problem, go right ahead, I'm not saying you'll die or anything.
> What kinds of psychotic bullying can the Internet dish out that would make me break?
Have you not seen grown men break to trolls?
It's not about the trolls (mostly, you can just have shit luck and step on an internet nerve and get feminist, anti feminist, swj, anti swj, gamergate, antigamergate, etc, anti etc on your ass), but about the person being susceptibile to geting overwhelmed by the crowd when shit goes south, be it by anger, frustration, stuborness, low self esteem, inexperience with the internet, whatever.
Most of them don't think it will happen to them until it does.
>Have you not seen grown men break to trolls?
>Most of them don't think it will happen to them until it does
I don't know, seems like it's something easy to avoid if you have control over your emotions. And if you don't you can just disconnect from the Internet for a few days.
>Have you not seen grown men break to trolls?
Are you memeing me?
Random of the top of my head, Phil Fish, Notch, Spoony.
>seems like it's something easy to avoid if you have control over your emotions. And if you don't you can just disconnect from the Internet for a few days.
If that is you, then you'll have no problem. The people I'm talking about can't do that. Although "just disconnect from the Internet for a few days." is a treatment, not a cure. Especially not a realistic one if your work depends on the internet.
Are those meme sphincters or vaginas?
>I don't know, seems like it's something easy to avoid if you have control over your emotions.
You might have control over your emotions but other do not, some people will feel deeply insulted by something you did or say and then they will make it their mission to fuck your shit up.
Just look at 4chan, we have people here who shit post 24/7 and even pay for vpn so they can keep shitposting after they get IP-range banned. They don't even see anything wrong in what they are doing and usually have some excuse why their actions are 100% justified and the mods are wrong.
So eventually, one day you'll come home after a fucking awful day, get on your computer and you'll be greeted by >>121425502 for the xth time and then you'll snap.
can people track your current twitter username to your previous username(s)? I have an account with 2,000+ followers but I've made a lot of tweets containing the word 'nigger' and such and I don't want to connect that to my actual name, but I want to repurpose the account for my devblog shit
>I've made a lot of tweets containing the word 'nigger' and such and I don't want to connect that to my actual name, but I want to repurpose the account for my devblog shit
we call those people incapable my friend
toy story rpg
Like I said, if down the line someone finds your tweets and confronts you about it there's absolutely no way to do that publicly without looking like a maniac. Seriously, try to imagine yourself trying to "frame" someone online and telling people who might be reading how that person said [bad thing] that one time. Not even the person with 11 charisma can get it right when it comes to random comments on the Internet.
Mine is F-Zero, but you control gravity and the protagonists are all gender-fluid half demon half angels that don't need no highway but it's an MMORPG and please donate to kickstarter.
Dude I have this great idea, it's basically Skyrim, Pokemon and Minecraft combined. I am still a html beginner but if you give me a complete dev-team I could oversee them and make sure they make the game right.
Give me some examples of an indie game developer who has had their comments found in the past where just saying "lol that was years ago, people change" wouldn't have fixed whatever drama happened regarding said comments.
FPS for blind people
RTS using console tans
RTS using memes
african mythology platformer
red pill rpg
racing game for blind people
Platforming demake of RE2/Silent Hill
Action rpg with conjoined lolis about cute stuff
Defender clone with waifus protecting kitties from evil puppies (mobile)
Not him, but if you really think people can get away with that nowadays with how sensitive faggots are to everything they find offensive just by saying "It was the old me" you're delusional.
>Every black person I know and hang out with is a nerd who plays video games and watches anime, not unlike myself and nearly every person on this entire website.
which explains why you think "muh racism" is bad, I guess.
I think in the first place, like I first said, a story like that would NEVER go big because of how sensitive faggots people are. People don't like witch hunts, and stupid comments on the Internet are the stupidest reason to witch hunt someone. If you act decently like a professional developer should NOW, people will have no reason to go back to hunt your old comments, and the ones who do will look like lunatics who are trying to stir shit up, and that will get shut down pretty fast because people are sensitive faggots who don't want to hurt the poor innocent dev.
>tfw when you disappear nobody will ever ask where your game went
Actually all along I was sent here to steal ideas from foolish idea guys like you
Thanks for the ideas, hyehehehehe
I actually misread your post as "can I get in trouble" not "will I get in trouble" but they're basically the same thing since nothing can be stated with 100% certainty.
If you get audited you will get in trouble. That's not likely but it's conceivable. If the google play store works with unity and has some sort of system for both determining whether a game was made with unity and fits some sort of criteria that indicate that it was made using a cracked version of the software then you could get in trouble. That seems extremely unlikely to me but companies /do/ go to some absurd lengths these days so you can never be too careful.
I mean, most likely you published some shitty little thing nobody will ever give a fuck about and you won't get audited and you'll get away with being a thief, but there's always a chance.
>Trying to make a quick shitty cartoon mouse
This wasn't meant to be terrifying.
>People don't like witch hunts, and stupid comments on the Internet are the stupidest reason to witch hunt someone.
Man, you're REALLY closed off from social media, aren't you? It's good to be innocent though, as long as you stay away from tumblr ignorance is bliss.
This only applies if your game is shitty, but if you make a really popular game and someone finds out you used to do some shit, it will certainly be problematic.
>tfw this shitbag will disappear and people will be glad to be rid of his useless posts
I don't know, I don't see how this could be a problem. Valve is not going to remove your game from their store because of comments you made years ago that were deleted. I don't see this situation escalating to the point where your sales are hurt in any significant way if your game is already popular. Especially if you act calm and composed and explain the situation properly as the drama goes big. People who accept your explanation, great. People who don't, well, sucks for them but there's nothing you can do if people wanna get mad at you.
I just really don't see how this could become anything more than just another day on the Internet.
>Valve is not going to remove your game from their store because of comments you made years ago that were delete
Yeah, they won't remove your game for stupid reasons. Just like that time hatred got removed because it was violent and for no actual reason, amirite?
It got back in though. The only time they actually removed a game for the author's comments on the Internet was when Paranautical Activity guy threatened to kill Gabe jokingly. If you're not doing stuff like that then they have no reason to do it. And deleted comments years ago that you already said you're sorry for in some way are definitely not comparable.
"I was in a bad place in my life and I took it out on other people. Since I lived around lots of black people and I found them annoying sometimes I lashed out when I was angry. Since then my life's gotten better and I see that I was wrong."
I don't know, it doesn't take much.
You are seriously delusional if you think that is enough to get by the type of people who would persecute a person for drawing their black characters light skinned or some shit. Boy, you just do not know, man.
hey guys i would ask 3d modeling but i dont want to start a new thread and its a really slow forum
anyone know why when im working on my current file unwrapping something very simple is messed up, but when i start a new file everything works fine?
for example im trying to unwrap a single face and then do follow active quads but when i unwrap the single face it unwraps the entire object automatically. not sure what that is
You don't need to get by the extremists, you need to show the reasonable people that you're reasonable and then the extremists will look like lunatics to the reasonable ones. The reasonable people outnumber the extremists by a lot, always. All you care about is not looking like a retard to most people, and what I wrote seems reasonable enough that most would go "yea I can understand that somewhat" and lay off the hate train.
The problem is that the extremists are much MUCH louder than any person. Why do you think shit like GamerGate and feminists both have extremists that portray each side as absolutely fucking stupid bullshit?
So what? Loud people who don't convince a majority don't have any power. The only power they have is the power you give them by responding. If the drama gets big enough you respond once with what I said and then ignore it completely. They'll stop talking about it after a while. You already explained your side of the situation. There's no more to it. If they wanna continue being loud all you can do is keep ignoring them. Most people won't keep being loud the same way because at that point it's just pure bullying and witch hunts, and most people are above that.
>Demo Day 5 is only two days away
>not even close to ready
Absolutely not. Abject failure here. I just lurk and get inspiration to crawl through my horrid existence like a worm. Progress posts literally keep me alive. It makes me cling to the sad notion that there's still hope for me, like Odin hanging from Yggdrasil.
My parents succumbed to malaria. My only child has frostbite returning from a walk to the nearby town. My wife has lost all limbs. The oats of the harvest have been taken by slugs.
The small cabin I call my home closes in on me as the head-wound gains infection.
I have never written a shader in my life, someone made this shader in unity 4 and now it wont work in unity 5.
The shader will just make my mesh bright pink.
That's what it does, that's not what its SUPPOSED to do.
It's supposed to do pic related. That's what it did in Unity 4 but in Unity 5 it makes everything black.
Really, anon? Why don't you look for a version done by anyone else for unity 5? This is basic shit. Like, tutorial level.
You might even be able to do achieve whatever you are looking for with the messing with the default materials.
Just google unity 5 fresnel shader.
>end up staying up all night for whatever reason
>take a short nap, wake up
>"i could do dev, but that's hopeless"
>"i could do literally anything else, but there is no joy in it"
>"nah just gonna go back to sleep
and that's how I sleept for literally the entire calandar day. those 24 hours are gone forever but they weren't worth anything anyway so it's ok
A few of us have gotten gamedev jobs at proper companies thanks to shitty demos and whatnot. Sure they're not filthy rich but at least they moved on to something actually sustainable.
It's crudely done, but possession works now.
i'm gonna make it
>If I could draw, I wouldn't be doing pixelshit.
pixelshit is actually harder than conventional drawing
if you're committed to avoiding drawing, just use 3d, thats an ENTIRELY different skill set tbqh
Not sure what else I can do, honestly. I'm just finishing this up before moving back to 3d and model some abominations.
I'd love to get into drawing, I've tried. But the sheer amount of time required to make something that isn't a complete piece of shit is absurd. I don't have that much time. And yeah, I'll be going to 3d modeling, I already know a bit. Not that I'm hoping to produce something good, but it doesn't make me want to kill myself like drawing does.
Protips: Here's how I do it as a non art fag
1. Get your ass on a chair
2. Draw the shitty mouse 20 times, each time changing what you think should be improved, trying different things.
3. It doesn't matter how shitty it is you just keep at it.
4. Choose the one you think is best.
You can't kinda-do-it-right with a mouse on paint, you need to sketch it out.
>pixelshit is actually harder than conventional drawing
Not really. If you're an OK drawer, you can make good to great pixel art. If you're a great drawer, you're just wasting your time with pixel art.
Pixel art's a good way to mask lack of drawing skill if you have an eye for color/good palettes. Seriously, pick the right colors and any low res pixelshit will look good. But if you've got no artistic talent whatsoever, it shows.
>all this hating on mobile
are you telling me that none of you guys own iphones?! i mean what the fuck...
this is really disheartening desu
at this point the "phone" feature of smartphones is basically an add-in, like how they used to add fm radios to mp3 players
it's like a little pocket magic scifi future device which just happens to include a phone feature. These things have so much potential and nobody fucking cares
>If I could make a game that all of those groups enjoyed, I'd be quite pleased with myself.
but all the games that have managed that have been
on the Source Engine, anon. Are you ready to take that leap? People could get hurt.
>I'd love to get into drawing, I've tried.
>These things have so much potential
meh. I'd rather read paper, paying for things with it is insecure and may lead to gouging by my provider, 3G networks are kinda shit, and all the other features it has are things I have an actually powerful and usable laptop and desktop for. And even then, anywhere where I gotta work on a computer, there's probably already a dedicated computer there to do it.
I actually kinda want my flip phone back.
I've read everywhere that Loomis is for when you're not that shitty. Is that not the case?
I've tried Drawing From the Right blah blah and Keys to Drawing. I still can't git gud. Maybe if I had more free time, getting through the painful initial barrier of "you're complete shit" wouldn't be as frustrating. I've been trying some other methods, and if I can't git gud with 1 or 2 more, I'll just give up and do art that I can already enjoy, like music.
Because the interface is shit. It's only useful for very simple things. Oh yeah I also use it as an mp3 player.
>Because the interface is shit. It's only useful for very simple things. Oh yeah I also use it as an mp3 player.
but my dungeon crawler's control scheme is good anon
>left side of screen is left "analog"
>right side is right "analog"
>anywhere you tap is 0,0 until you slide
>sliding right analog initiates attack sequence based on spectrum (duration of tap/hold)
>release does the given attack
>possible to quickly tap for rapid basic attack or to cast individual spells this way
i'll post a webum when i have some art that isn't just colored rectangles
patented idea do not steal
Loomis is just bad and in general drawing books kinda suck unless you're already capable of following their examples. The best way to ~GIT GUD~ is to just find some photos/anime/furshit you like and copy it, imo. Copy, copy, copy.
I'm not that good myself, but I improved immensely when I stopped trying to read tutorials and just literally had my own fun with a pencil.
>patented idea do not steal
I'm pretty sure that control scheme only isn't patented because it's so common and is thus actually unpatentable
>I'm pretty sure that control scheme only isn't patented because it's so common and is thus actually unpatentable
name a single other game that uses my ingenious control scheme
honestly I think this lends itself pretty well to a touch screen/two sticks. It feels a little awkward with two analogs but I haven't tried actually setting up controller support
>The controls sound like shit
no bully idiot
Why are you worried about the opinion of nodevs? Mobile game development is game development. Nodevs can find a million reasons to shit on your game whether it's a mobile game or not, so you may as well do what you want to do and disregard them.
>Copy, copy, copy.
So you're suggesting that I stop giving a shit, and try drawing stuff I like instead of putting myself through the hell that are art books? Because seriously, they're shit at teaching.
I guess I could go try and draw the Maiden in Black a bunch of times. I'll at least be trying something I want.
Some games work really well on touchscreens. Turn Based Strategy games come to mind.
If your games is really good for mobile, go for it. Just don't expect success, nobody gets a mobile thinking "gee I can't wait to game with this!".
>i just care about whether or not what they are saying is true
What are they saying that concerns you?
And as a general rule, nothing nodevs say about game development is true. Literally no thing. And their opinions don't matter, either. They're just angry people who subscribe to the notion of "casual vs hardcore" games when hundreds of millions of people around the world are happily playing both kinds of games and paying money for it.
>Google Play Music
>If your games is really good for mobile, go for it. Just don't expect success, nobody gets a mobile thinking "gee I can't wait to game with this!".
i should just kill myself to be quite honest family
This. If you don't submit early, don't even bother. You won't get the feedback. You won't be on the tier lists. You won't be on the memes.
Source: Anon that submitted his demo late. Tbh, I would've rather been in Garbage Tier than nobody gave a shit because I submitted late.
Nah, no point in tracing. I also wouldn't feel good about the final product.
I'll try drawing that way.
Also, wouldn't non-cartoony shit be better to draw at first? So I don't end up with same-face and stuff like that.
>nobody gets a mobile thinking "gee I can't wait to game with this!"
This is a perfect example of someone representing their opinion as fact.
Mobile gaming is still a multi-billion dollar industry because children want to play games on their parents smartphones, and continue to play them when they are old enough to have their own.
Myopic vision is a trademark of the nodev.
Where can I get nice game design material?
When I mean game design, I mean making shit look and sound beautiful, thinking about level design and things that are done far away from coding
I got some good material from Extra Credits, but couldn't find other sources.
Tons of people in the last thread were shitting all over some guy (and, later, me) who was talking about doing his first game for iOS. My main concern is that I really won't get any exposure and that despite being good my game will immediately fade into obscurity the moment it launches because of the torrent of shovelware and shitware on mobile platforms... but it seems like it's kinda similar with Steam, too. Having never released a game that wasn't a half-finished, unpolished turd, I'm extremely nervous and anxious about releasing the one I'm currently working on, which is like my fucking lifetime masterpiece by comparison.
I just don't want to be the gamedev equivalent of those guys who make pretty cool stuff and never really get recognition except in obscure forums and later magazines that talk about games that were good but never got anywhere
And so many of the shitters' complaints seem true. Who talks about mobile games via word-of-mouth? nobody. Who REALLY hunts down and spends a lot of time finding RPGs in the app store? nobody. Who looks beyond the first five or ten results? nobody.
i should just order the helium bag now
>wanting to end up in an infographic by a notorious nodev
Why? Don't validate "I'm a game critic" nodevs like that, their opinion is worth a 10 second glance from agdg and that's it. Nobody is really paying attention to it.
>So I don't end up with same-face and stuff like that.
just draw different faces homie
>Also, wouldn't non-cartoony shit be better to draw at first?
honestly I'd recomment simplistic cartoony shit first just to get forms and anatomy down
detail is for later and larger pieces
>Pulling shit out of your ass
There are more statistics out there. Whales are what actually make dough, not children.
Mobile players play those games because they have a mobile, not the other way around, faggot. It's a completely different profile from someone getting a vita or 3ds.
>Tons of people in the last thread were shitting all over some guy (and, later, me) who was talking about doing his first game for iOS.
I guarantee you it was the same bitter nodev who quadruple replies to every post that upsets him. Maybe two of them. Gamedevs honestly don't care what platform you develop for.
>And so many of the shitters' complaints seem true.
Save yourself now before it's too late. Their words are poison and have corrupted their own minds to the point that shitposting on agdg is the height of their day and their biggest accomplishment. Some of them openly loathe indie gaming and indie game devs despite the fact that they spend all of their time around us.
>Who talks about mobile games via word-of-mouth? nobody.
Literally millions of kids and young adults everyday. Marketing is important but word of mouth is real.
>i should just order the helium bag now
Everything about your post leads me to believe you've already been tainted by the nodevs. God rest your soul.
>Mobile players play those games because they have a mobile, not the other way around, faggot.
Then why were you arguing that "literally nobody wants to play games on their mobile"?
I sense anger, hypocrisy and lack of direction from this post. The nodev is strong with this one.
>Who talks about mobile games via word-of-mouth?
Most of what you said is true, except this.
Normies will be wasting time in some game, and share it with their friends.
Research the best selling and top grossing games in app stores to see the kinds of games that make it big, then go lower and look up games that at least break even. If your game is good, you should have a chance of breaking even. It's not completely fucked as you think, just that your chances of being noticed are abysmal.
fianceeis a pixel art whiz so I've got all the art done basically free if you count the lewdcompensation, so I'm basically spending no money
just my time and life and soul
I'd rather bomb than go unnoticed though
maybe I can just shill on toucharcade
>Being this fucking retarded.
I never said that.
This is exactly what I posted:
>Just don't expect success, nobody gets a mobile thinking "gee I can't wait to game with this!".
Which by no means is:
>Then why were you arguing that "literally nobody wants to play games on their mobile"?
But try and twist it around with whatever fucktarded logic you want.
>I dunno, I think all of that stuff is fun.
That doesn't mean it has any significance outside of agdg. Nobody should be wringing their hands over whether or not an unknown person on the internet put their game in a jpeg.
>If you can't handle your game being called shit, AGDG probably isn't the best place for you.
Are you implying any of my games have been on those lists? Just telling the truth.
>Normies will be wasting time in some game, and share it with their friends.
It's true, gamers have a lot of free time, and mobile gamers have as much free time and tend to be more social. Their age range is really wide too.
> It's not completely fucked as you think, just that your chances of being noticed are abysmal.
I agree, a person can make a good sum of money without reaching the top 10 list of anything. They can have success, but not everyone can be master of the universe.
>mfw some anon here recommended EC a few weeks ago
Actually I was needing some books, lectures or w/e from people that know what they're doing. Who were already out there.
Because right now I'm
>need to produce some game to survive
>prob mobile would be the fastest way
>need to make it look at least decent so people play
You sound too angry to be taken seriously. You implied that finding success in mobile games is a long shot because "nobody gets a mobile wanting to play games with it", which is a lie. If people didn't want to play games on their smartphones their wouldn't be a multi-billion dollar industry around it.
You can have the last word now if you want.
>"Game design" cannot be learned from books
>You have to practice by making games, lots of games
This is so true.
Game design sense cannot be learned by watching youtubes, either, which is hard for some of the resident shitters here to accept. Be wary of their "advice" and "constructive criticism". It's usually a half-assed rewording of things they heard from their heroes like Errant Signal.
It seems you're arguing a completely different thing.
I was talking about the profile of the market. Someone buying a 3ds or vita is a completely different market from someone that plays games on a mobile phone. My mother and normie friends play on their phones. They didn't buy them to play games and don't spend a dime on them. Mobile gaming companies are always at risk, and even the big ones are going to shit. Look at Rovio.
And while yes, I was being a douchebag, your holier than thou posts are no less annoying.
>My mother and normie friends play on their phones. They didn't buy them to play games and don't spend a dime on them.
How does this negate the fact that mobile gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry?
Now you can have the last word, for real.
>Mobile gaming companies are always at risk, and even the big ones are going to shit. Look at Rovio.
Because indie gamedevs are totally the same as retarded companies with employees operating on loans.
I just wanted to know if making a
good gamewas pointlesson mobile. I seem to have derailed the thread.
e-even like $50/day in revenue would be a massive success by my standards at this point
At what point should I be concerned about all these nested for/while loops inside a game loop?
Feels like I iterate my list of actors more often than necessary.
>create array of actors
>iterate the array to initialize them
>create array of tiles
>iterate array to generate map (should only happen once per level)
>step through array of actors several times per tick updating initiatives(this can be condensed by predictive math)
>print loop of actor names to console starting with active actor
I know I can handle turn order more elegantly and that knowledge that a better solution exists is distracting me. Sort of like writers block. Getting hung up on something that already works, wanting to make it better, but it already 'works'.
It's called perspective. Is it more important that your mom doesn't buy mobile games or is it more important that hundreds of millions of people collectively spend multiple billions of dollars on mobile games a year?
Lack of perspective. Another weakness of the nodev.
That and using terms like "normies" outside of r9k.
My country's unemployment ratio is growing kinda fast since last year. The city where I study design just don't have jobs available (I tried malls, fast foods, telemarketing, you name it).
Also, I'm working with a few more designers and coders in a project that produces apps and games for either mobile or PC, but we only get paid if we publish stuff (we also have some imagine cup's first places there). So far some of them have already published, but I couldn't get anything, so I'm looking to make some game just to get some income (any amount is welcome, really). I'm having to sell cakes around my campus to keep living.
Also, the minimum wage here is around 200,00 USD (or 0.95 per hour).
Thanks for the info.
Also, my coders can only use Unity. Wich softwares should I use to work with them?
After Effects? Photoshop? Illustrator? Blender? Z Brush? Any for sound design?
Yea. But I think I'm chugging along and just forcing things to work right now.
I'm definitely feeling the 'must refactor' itch, but I've decided to procrastinate on agdg instead of scratch it.
I feel like there are some magnificent recursions that would improve my runtime. Just outside my view.
After I read some shitposts, I'll implement pathfinding instead of fretting over runtime just yet.
You think you've got it bad?
I'm a wage slave, i do hours of menial tasks and talking to normies to make someone else money.
I want to make money from games so bad so that can stop wageslavery crushing my soul
This is my core draw loop right now
No, I'm not going to change it anytime soon, my game runs fine :)
it looks like he's dislocating his shoulder
maybe his chest should move like people normally do when they breathe?
while we're bitching about not being able to get jobs
>CS degree. decent GPA
>released a few reasonably sized games
>applied to about 25 entry level tech jobs
>rejected from one
>nothing else has responded in a month
How the fuck does anyone here get a job? I've tried fluffing up my resume by enumerating skills I learned from gamedev, which hasn't helped at all.
>>need to produce some game to survive
No, nononono. You won't make money with gamedev. It's a retarded gamble.
Just get a job. It'll be far less stressful and you'll actually be able to eat and shit.
What are you expected to have on your github? Should I be making my games completely open source? Or do I need to just go around finding problematic language in documentation and sanitizing it?
Should I be linking my github in my resume? Because most things I've applied for want you to use their special site to apply, and they only let you upload a resume and personalized 2 page cover letter, to which they won't even give me an acknowledgement of having read. Some require me to fill out diversity tests, too. Only one had a box to enter a github url.
Learn to network, nigger. Just giving HR departments your resume will result in wowit'sfuckingnothing every time.
This is advice to lawyers specifically, but everything in it is applicable in basically every industry.
I throw away resumes with too much skills enumerate because it reeks of desperation. normally when companies have opens you target only the skills that they require and not anything else. If they don't respond to you it's most likely that they are just not interested in what you had to offer.
My father tries to help me as he can, but he's also been going through hard times.
The government here just gives welfare to people who lives with less than 30 USD per month. Yes, thirty.
>you may need to move
Unfortunately I can't. I'm studying at the best design school in my whole country. If I want to get out of this hell, I must graduate there.
We're all gonna make it, bro. Just study af and do your best!
The darker the night, the brighter the stars, eh?
Like I said, no place here is hiring, not even mcfailure. My actual income is selling cakes at my campus.
You should have some example of your work, or just contributions you've made to various projects
You can't just expect someone to be interested in you because you tell them you have skills, you should add some way to show them off
>How the fuck does anyone here get a job?
i joined the military
>eng degree, decent GPA
>2 years of internship experience
>applied to ~dozen entry level software and engineering jobs
>one interview, went horrible
>that was over five years ago
>all my friends etc are all full on happy, rich, living the life
>im still living at home, a complete embarrassment to everyone i know (no one will even talk to me anymore)
Just remember, it could be worse. Also don't get depressed and stop applying
I'm going to assume you've been doing something else all this time and not sitting at home doing nothing.
Large unexplained gaps in employment can completely invalidate anything you did prior.
>companies list 30 job requirements
>put 20 in my resume
>it's not enough
can we just fucking throw every cunt involved in hr/recruitment in an oven
The post assumes you're in college and go to college events.
#4 is obvious bullshit. Offering to buy a potential employer a coffee won't get you anywhere unless you're a hot slut.
How do people do pixel perfect 2d graphics on OpenGL? Everything is floats, so even if you use GL_NEAREST for textures, isn't there the chance that when OpenGL rasterizes your sprites they won't line up exactly?
i'm >>121442967 and you would not believe some of the fat cunts I did basic with
the military is all nerds these days and with good reason. you don't need to be some huking adonnis to get in. just stop smoking weed, that's all you gotta do
> Simply ask if you can buy them a cup of coffee and pick their brain. Of the 50 or so times I did this, only 3 said no. 2 never got back. It works.
Yes, some guy totally got 9/10 of the attorneys he emailed to go on a coffee date with him.
>What's your greatest weakness?
>What animal best reflects your personality?
>20 bullshit personality question mines later
>Ok, now let me ask you some questions from our IT department about pascal.
>Who developed pasca-
Bye. HR is one of the worst things to have ever been introduced to the corporate world.
If you've ever had a software interview before you'd understand that it can all become a complete clusterfuck. The one I had started quizzing me on obscure domain specific aspects of a language.
Nope, I'm pretty much dead in the water. I kept applying to a few jobs but really after the first few months I gave up hope and got depressed. No idea what to do with my life any more.
I mean I spent all my time at home learning and doing software shit but none of it ever worked out and it was never a business.
If I ever get a shot at an interview I'll probably just try to lie and say I was helping out with my family's business occasionally.
But yeah, I'm imagining my future will basically be
1 get kicked out soon (no idea why they still let me live at home)
2 retail work
either go back to africa or get out of africa. i'm not sure which one you have to do but it's one of those. godspeed family
unity so we can laugh at you when you fuck up something involving rotation
yeah but id like to be a little in shape, don't want to be stuck in the fitness training unit for 2 weeks making basic feel even longer
what branch ya in? and what MOS? im shootin' for CTN in the Navy
So do people just use normal dimensions and nearest textures and hope for the best?
ie, glOrtho(windowHeightPx, windowWidthPx, ...) and have your geometry be specified in pixel units too
If your excuse for not making it look better is 'old games looked shit too', then just stop doing dev.
they didn't look shit cuz they didn't care. They looked as good as they could for what was available. You on the otherhand have no reason to put arbitrary limits on the quality of your art and it reeks of laziness to give that shitty 'old games X/Y/Z' excuse.
they'd have flashing distortions because they had to use memory not allowed for animation. They used only 3's instead of 4's in animation because floppies didn't have enough room for another slide. They chopped sprites in half and only updated one half because it saved space they desperately needed.
You're just fucking lazy.
gamemaker is 100% geared for 2D but uses GML which won't get much use in the "real world"
Unity uses c# which is good, but it is kind of tacked onto the 3D haphazard.
depends on if you want a viable rl language and if you want a good working environment.
I would accept a shitty codemonkey job if I could get one in a heartbeat lol
>Use the programmable pipeline
Im not using fixed function pipeline... but by glOrtho I meant generating the orthographic projection view matrix as opposed to perspective projection.
I'm using glm to generate the matrices and pass them to the shader etc
rewriting my data driven skill system, now they're written like this
it has quite a few lines but it's simple to understand
Well yeah, what else would it be?
i dont know what those acronyms are. literally only the US uses them. CTN??? I had to look that up. sounds pretty advanced tbqh
in terms of fitness just don't be completely terrible. if you can run around a block without passing out, you're good. you'll also get in much better shape while you're there if you're a pasty nerd right now
expect to meet a lot of weird nerds if you do get in though. the military, navy and air force especially, are like 99% technicians of various sorts and thus are 99% weird nerds
I kinda want to make a 2d game with sketchy hand-drawn "sprites" just scanned and intentionally sloppily cropped
Should I use a renderer for my playing field and a separate renderer for my ui? Does this reduce how many times I need to update per second? Or do I only use explicitly one renderer per window? What's the point of viewports?
Changing the viewport allows you to render to a section of the window or to textures of varying size
How exactly did you come up with the idea that multiple renderers means less updating?
Dr. Mcgillicuddies Fireball whiskey shooter (s it used to be called) works fantastically when mixed with Dr. Pepper.
Half and have I call it a Medical Breakthrough, while any less than half fireball I call a second opinion.
Great stuff really.
I know the garbage you have. That's what I'm talking about.
this is what the label used to look like.
Back in my college days I would mix it with Dr. Pepper, but if I had nothing else I would drink it straight like no one's business.
Those were the nights I got reeaaal fucked up.
I have a special place in my heart for it.
nah homie I dunno. have a probably different purple video game cat instead,
voted "some minty shit" in the hopes you throw up tbqh
I considered participating in one but less than a week is way too short when all you know is 3d wysywigs
way too many memes in one post bro
no, Unity is Microsoft Silverlight but somehow worse. UE4 is UE3 but lower performance despite looking worse
Oh I think this is the source
what if my game isn't a puzzle game like every other hipster shitter tries to make?
If your game has levels which have to be designed, then you're making a puzzle game. Legend of Zelda? A sequence of puzzles. Mario? Jumping puzzles.
They might not be explicitly designated as puzzles, but if you're not thinking about them as puzzles, then they will only accidentally be fun to play.
>If your game has levels which have to be designed,
>a space of play should be unreadable bullshit on purpose just to be "le puzzles" even and especially if there are no actual puzzles to be solved
have you considered that maybe you're bad at making levels
>sourcefam/reek/rotate tries to dole out some shitty 1st year full sail university nodev "advice"
when are you just going to quit
youve been doing this for over 3 years now and still nobody listens to you
have you considered that it's for a reason
please have something end your life already, its for the betterment of agdg and yesdevs everywhere
