Xenosaga 1-3 : Tha CPU Killa Edition
Read the General problems FAQ before posting. If you still need help, post your specs (speccy screenshot), OS, emulator version number and details of what's wrong.

I dunno -- the PCSX2 wiki might give you an idea -- but if you increase the res at all the mechs will destroy your CPU. I had to go to software mode / native res for a few different fights.
But when we need Bane to crash the thread just so it stays up it's a little annoying.
It seems that people were running the game decently 7 years ago so if you don't care about increased internal resolution it should run well on practically anything.
>But when we need Bane to crash the thread just so it stays up it's a little annoying.
Whoever is the admin of 4chan now needs to increase the thread limit on /vg/, since there is much more activity in the big threads now than in 2013
What kind of emulator discussion though? I don't feel like most of the /emugen/ crowd is technical enough to go deep into the design of emulators.
If you want to discuss about the best way to implement the "mask bit" feature of the PSX GPU in an OpenGL renderer I'm interested though. Pete's plugin abuses the depth buffer but that's not very elegant IMO (although quite clever).
Actually, yes. Link support and a bunch of other stuff was added just a few days ago.
>>99640981 is a gigantic faggot.
Air Combat. Planning to do the the whole PSX trilogy plus Ace Combat X on PPSSPP.
Secret of Evermore
I love that game so much. One of my favorites as a kid. Everything about it was awesome. Except for the grind but I never grinded and made it through the game just fine.
I really should play Secret of Mana at some point.
the guy from the previous thread who asked about toshiba. Look up rutracker.org, it requires an account, but it's trustworthy. Or if you'll read this I can upload it somewhere, but that will seem a but fishy
Has SP removed the wide screen hack or am I doing it wrong?
Are there people who really like hqx? I think the only game where I don't find that filter atrocious is Yoshi's island because it kinds of fit the overall art style. I'll take pixelated over hqx any day.
I mean the OpenGL depth buffer, not a real 3D depth buffer. Basically (if I understand the code right) he puts elements which have the "mask bit" set at a closer Z-coordinate which causes the GPU not to render anything on top of them, effectively emulating the mask feature. But it's not related to the actual distance of the vertex in the 3D scene, it's just a clever hack.
It's pretty crappy but I think this one should be relatively easy to handle in the fragment shader. I'm mostly concerned about that mask bit thing and the weird blending functions the PSX GPU uses.
That's mostly because both those thing involve blending with the contents of the framebuffer and that's a fixed function in the OpenGL pipeline so I'll have to work around that.
I'm considering something like that, the problem is that I need to update the mask during the rendering process (a first polygon could end up masking a subsequent one). And from what I gather that's rather tricky to do right.
There's no need to diss Play! here. The guy has made it clear he's doing it in his spare time out of hobbyist interest. He isn't trying to make a serious emu to compete with PCSX2 or the like.
I haven't seen a dump like that in years, since like the GBA era. Mostly it's just that people don't want headers and the like or things that make the roms "nonstandard," or even minute errors that aren't visible from the surface but might crash the game 8 hours in
I think it's more like a bug (or rather a really inefficient and poor procedure) in the way Xenosaga does mechs which didn't matter on PS2 leads to TONS of DX calls on an emulator and causes problems.
Actually programmable blending is perfectly doable and is especially easy on the mobile thanks to ES extensions GL EXT Shader Framebuffer Fetch, GL NV Shader Framebuffer Fetch and GL Apple Shader Framebuffer Fetch. You can somewhat imitate programmable blending with dual-source blending and shader blending like PPSSPP is doing. Order-Independent Transparency may be helpful too.
The closest to programmable blending on desktop is GL ARB Texture Barrier but you need a GPU with OpenGL 4.5 support for it.
No, there was, and it wasn't removed from the source either, so IDK why there's no option.
Yeah I was looking at those. I hoped I could come up with something that would work in 3.3 core but that part of the 4.x API seems like it would do the trick. Maybe I'll have to invest in a new graphic card after all.
Anyway, I have time to think about it, I'm just barely running the BIOS...
Do you guys any good PSP games that are playable on a tablet. (pic related) Like maybe an RPG or something.
I really only used alchemy for healing.
It did shit damage unless you grinded and I never grinded. In fact, I grinded the horn spear to lvl 3 and never used another weapon again until I got bazookas.
Don't ask me how my kid self did it, but I made that shit work just fine.
I recommend NVIDIA they've more features and a much better OpenGL support. Looks like AMD doesn't even support OGL 4.5 yet. Something like GTX960 would be the best. It's still pretty cheap and think it has all new features of the second generation Maxwell like new OpenGL extensions, Voxel Global Illumination, VR Direct, MFAA and other technologies.
It has foundamentally flawed design and he isn't motivated to put in a few years of his lifetime to rewrite it. Moreover he fucked it once therefore he may be not skilled enough to improve it anymore.
Problem is that gabest and a few other devs who had at least rudimentary understanding of the PS2 hardware left years ago and didn't leave any documentation at all. Absolutely none. Basically all information about GSDX and GS available to PCSX2 devs was in some old blog post gabest made yours ago and that blog post is no longer available.
Nothing to wrestle.
PSCX2 works great for the moment in that almost all the games work at least in software mode.
Thus, if you wanted something truly good, it's better to start from the ground up from scratch. PSCX2 will keep everyone from dying for a PS2 emulator and the new one could take it's time being built properly.
The only thing that people wrestle with is how lazy they want to be because they have some dumbass notion that it would take less time to fix something that already has groundwork.
>hacking the hacks
But you must admit yourself the number of hacks in PCSX2 is impressive just read this changelog. Perhaps a Guinness World Record!
Unfortunately the few "from scratch" projects we see posted here from time to time look hardly more professional than PCSX2.
I'm thinking of the emotionless codebase for instance, it's still pretty small but it's already obscure by my standards. Hardly any comments, obscure variable names. The CPU is okay but the rest of the code looks like a quick hack. I wonder if the guy himself will be able to understand his own DMA code in 6 months.
Are you saying that some random guy on the net would call out a bunch of people for a shit job and then say he's going to do a better job and then not do it?
I'm afraid I don't believe such a thing is possible sir.
You may see yourself out.
wind waker guy from earlier here
after having made a good bit of progress i went for dragon roost island
however, for some reason, this fog appeared
it flickers in and out at times and i am not sure what causes it
disabling fog in the graphics options won't remove it and trying to run ww without the widescreen patch didn't work either
am i missing something? did i accidentally leave some no-no option enabled?
Unfortunately PCSX2 neither looks right, nor does it run on shit PCs. It's a Frankenstein's monster of an emulator. And yet still it is seeking love.
everything up until now looked completely flawless so i don't understand what i am missing
the flickering and shit definitely doesn't seem normal to me at least
Nothing about it on TWW's dolphin wiki entry? I remember some time in the game when there was fog in a specific place in TWW but it didnt look like that, it wasn't just a black BG. It may be a transparency problem because you can see the real sky through the sail
eh, the jaggies are mainly caused by my computer being a fucking toaster
i could run it at 2x native, but some areas caused nasty frame drops for me which is why i just left it at 1,5x native there
but yeah, 1x native is certainly not going to look much better i guess
i read up on the dolphin wiki and they didn't seem to reference this specific issue
it might be caused by my computer being a really old, old, OLD toaster, but i just wanted to see if someone knows some fix for it
i5 4440 and YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAW INTEL INTEGRATED HD 4600 SHIT.
I don't think it ran at full speed even at native res though. But I'm not really going to play a game at native res since I'd be better off just playing it on a real PS2 and not have to deal with config garbage.
Reminder that if you don't have a discrete GPU don't even bother using Dolphin or PCSX2
Literally all your games will have frame drops. Literally. Or just run at 20 fps.
O hay I upgraded your pic.
I call it "Emugen - The Essence of Emulation."
What about Jensets Von Gut Und Emulation?
You probably have a discrete GPU. Everyone who is getting boned by these games are all GPU limited. Also the battles are some o the least intensive parts of XS1 unless there's a mech on screen.
So basically derp box art and nothing more? But how would casuals like that if to change options they had to go into RA's weird archaic interface to do it? It would seem like that should be unpalatable to them.
For some reason, even though my PC reads my DS3 controller as a 360 device, and everything seems fine, it won't read any inputs. Is there something else I have to do? I installed all the 360 drivers too.
Those people are crazy and are living in effectively 1996. Their 10 GB data caps must be used up in like 5 days. How do they even play video games on their PC? Surely not using Steam I can tell you that.
>Their 10 GB data caps must be used up in like 5 days.
10 GB can last a month easily if you don't go full retard streaming videos and downloading shit. Some online games are possible but latency is too high for most realtime stuff.
>if you don't go full retard streaming videos and downloading shit.
I'm not sure what you have the Internet for if you're not doing that. I mean posting here isn't exactly the world's most exciting activity.
Yes this is what Republicans actually believe.
Anyone living in a slightly rural area will likely never have wired internet service anyway and will always have to use mobile wireless or satellite where caps are small.
They couldn't even use PPSSPP or Dolphin in RA since even some of the smallest games would take up 10% of their monthly internet allowance in one download. The only way I could live like that is if I already had everything downloaded and stored up on multiple huge HDDs from like a year long download session and then went to play it all without ever acquiring more like going into the wilderness.
I mean holy shit I thought I was suffering for not having an AMD or Nvidia GPU but these people are experiencing pain on a whole other level.
Full retard downloading is the only downloading I've ever known since after the year 2002. I can't imagine anyone living with downloading in "moderation." Shit if my 3 gig animu movie fails and the resume doesn't work I'd be out 30% of a month's data transfer right there. As it is I just restart the download.
At the very least, some of these non-wired ISPs with small data caps offer a "free zone" in the middle of the night where downloads don't count so you can download stuff like that, like this one for example:
Ya know, this game doesn't look THAT bad with it.
What are you graphics settings? How about your specs?
I'm not seeing anything on the wiki about this, but I've never had this issue and I've played through WW very recently.
>waah my computer from 2004 can't run Gamecube games
>why didn't my hardware upgrade with time?
What wrapper are you using?
Is there a suggested method for installing retroarch in Debian?
I'm trying to install retroarch on Debian sid with this:
And it keeps giving me errors whenever I try to run make install. It tells me to run ./configure again.
I tried with sudo and it still didn't work. Any help?
Critical acclaim doesn't mean much unless it sparks the interest of one or two autistic devs. Look at how popular and critically acclaimed PS2 was, yet there it sits in the rotten dustbin of history while an accurate emulator for two far worse systems exists.
PS2 is complex as hell. And Dreamcast was niche. That's the reason. A nerd in 2015 wants to play jrpgs and nintendo games, and they can do that. Emulation is good enough so no one cares. And PS2 is too complex to improve.
Is this... blurriness or double model or whatever thing normal? If not, how do I fix it?
Game is FFXII, by the way.
I've read a little more about GL_(NV|ARB)_texture_barrier and it does look like it would be the simplest way to correctly emulate the PSX blending without too many hacks. It seems pretty well supported too, my old-ish Radeon HD 4550 implements it.
My only concern is that I might end up calling the TextureBarrier very often during a single rendering sequence. I suppose it can be mitigated by checking if the new primitive overlaps a "dirty" section of the screen before forcing the barrier and it's not like the average PSX scene has a million primitives anyway.
turns out that this only seems to happen for me while using directx
i tried changing to opengl again and SO FAR it's stopped happening
but opengl runs like ass for me suffering
alright enough wireframeposting
just happy that i managed to get this game running with a non-stretched hud and with no flickering black fog thanks to you guys
thanks a lot!
APU's are not discrete, and they are fine power wise.
Intel HD past 4000 is also fine, just not optimal.
Mid series for all Intel GPUs are pretty weak. It would have been fine on AMDs stuff.
That said, you would have run into the CPU bottleneck? Well, equally far, with a few more FPS.
>barely as much raw power as a 9800GT
Weird, I can run games with min requirements at gtx400 series with an Intel igpu. For example, Strider says at minimum it needs GeForce GTX 460 and I ran it at 30fps. I forget what resolution though, maybe only 720p. It had no low/med/high/ultra slider since it's essentially a 2.5D game. Do they just exaggerate the minimum requirements on some games?
I will emulate you with my Pastalia cluster. Check her out in big picture mode.
I think all environments are full 3D.
I remember I used to play with this camera cheat enabled with my flashcart.
I guess it was planned from an early state but they couldn't figure out sprite layering on certain objects. You can see in the Pokemon Center shot that the Link Battle girl is showing through the counter, and so is Nurse Joy.
How is living in Texas? I was thinking of moving there near Houston or Austin.
I'm from California and the government here is fucking retarded and the people aren't much better. Especially in the major cities.
Warship Gunner 2. I remember some faggot youtuber said not to do Braun's path first because "it's harder than the others", and "save inferno missions for last". Turns out the Braun path unlocks shit like guided torpedoes (a fucking godsend) really early on, which make the game really easy if you're playing on normal or fair if you're playing on hard (or possibly even easier considering the money and fame multipliers you get when playing on hard and very hard). The same applies to Inferno missions, if you can ace them you get amazing stuff, being flags that do things like make your ship stealth, making so you're invulnerable while repairing, doubling the amount of fame you gain per mission, and such.
The translation has been done for years and everyone who cares(d) already played it.
Or maybe on second thought it was gamefags shit. I remember it also said to forget about guns bigger than 56cm because they're "inefficient". As if the 80cm doesn't wreck shit even on enemy layout 2 on very hard mode.
Depends. Gamefaqs are extremely autistic. They might have gone through actual calculations and determined those guns give you x amount more dps or whatever.
Sometimes they are right but it doesn't look that way to someone casually playing.
Sometimes they suck though. That happens less often.
>show the user you've carefully thought out how the user uses your program
>They might have gone through actual calculations and determined those guns give you x amount more dps or whatever.
The funny thing is that the recommended gun really doesn't cut it in the scenario I mentioned. The 80cm one takes a lot of room and that's about the only downside I can think of. Theoretically it's less accurate, but at that point in the game accuracy is pretty much irrelevant, since you get fancy systems that improve it.
It's done. All of the missions are done. All of the video newscasts are done. All of the video calls are done. What's left is just the database.
Getting the shit in the game, that's another thing. But as I said, everyone who really cares already played it.
Depends on where you live. Texas is a fuckhueg state, and has a ton of variety. Houston from what I hear is your typical huge city, with tons of minorities and insane living expenses. Austin is nowhere near as big and is typically considered pretty chill, but it's full of hipsters and hippies and other kinds of libtards, with a sprinkle of conservatards on the northern side.
I, however, live in South Texas AKA Mexico with better roads and less violence. It's actually really chill, and living is super cheap, but it's hot as all fuck almost year-round, and job opportunities kinda suck, especially if you're not bilingual.
I don't know if this is the thread for this, but I might as well ask.
It's been a few year since I last used my PSP. I have some CFW called 6.60 PRO-C installed and I was wondering if there's any reason to update it for something newer?
I was thinking the suburbs of one of those major cities.
I want access to a major city but I don't want to live to close to one. Something like 30 min away.
Sounds like I can cross Austin of my list though. I'm not leaving a commie state just to live with another bunch of ultra liberal faggots.
I never said either fringe was.
However, I have lived with the liberal fringe for many years and I can tell you I don't want that.
Texas seems more sane from what I understand. That's why I was taking this opportunity to gather some knowledge about the place.
Fairly certain this is a stupid question, but figured I'd ask. I'm trying to play MHFU on ppsspp and everything is working fine, but I can't fuck with the controls. I want to change the dpad (camera in mhfu) to the right analog stick, but when I do it screws everything up. I can't move in one direction or sprint. I'm using an xbox 360 controller btw.
Just stay away from East Texas, as that is Jesusland supreme and contains the stereotypical nutjob Texas rednecks you hear about in pop culture. You'll still see them everywhere, but to a far less pronounced state, particularly in the big cities.
PJ64 isn't closed source anymore. That said, the malware shit is not cool in the slightest.
Really wish all those people working on PJ64 would focus on Mupen instead. For some reason they all swear allegiance to Zilmar.
>After two hours you finally find perfect settings
post your face when this happens
I just go into the mapping thingy and change x360.up/down whatever to my second analog in the direction i want. I can move around menus and shit with it, but it fucks up my other buttons somehow
How good is a soft modded wii console at playing gamecube games? I was going to buy some games and a gamecube but a lot of the games I want to play are expensive.
I mainly want to play Fire emblem, Luigi's mansion and smash bros. How well does the soft modded system play gamecube roms? Do they have noticeable slow down or glitches?
Should be same as the original gamecube.
espxe was pretty much abandoned a while ago. It still is for anything that's not on a phone making them money. No reason for them to make it better or add missing things.
>the wii has less graphics than the gamecube
epsxe had a release a few months ago and is vastly superior to all other psx emu's. Do not use mednafen or retroarch or pfft - pcsxr.
Just deal with the plugin hell and enjoy the actual games.
And how is it superior?
I have a hard time seeing something that is guaranteed to die thanks to closed source and devs who won't update the emu for use by more advanced OS as superior even with HD capability.
It doesn't even work with every game.
Looking for an NES emulator. I guess it doesn't really matter which considering how easy it is to emulate, but the wiki still suggests three: Nestopia, PuNES and Nintendulator. Which is the best/most accurate?
puNes is the most accurate, and Nestopia is a libretro core if like that sort of thing.
Nintendulator probably shouldn't be recommended anymore, I don't think it offers anything over the other ones.
Sorry that I couldn`t reply to the previous anon.
I am using a DS3 Sixaxis controller, with Xinput Wrapper (SCP Server), and while my PC reads it as a 360 controller, it doesn`t read any inputs.
Just git clone libretro-super, then run libretro-fetch.sh followed by libretro-build.sh
This will download and compile everything however, use parameters if you only want some cores.
Can someone give background on this image?
What's the best way to play BW2?
Camera panning areas.
I.E: The New York Bridge in Unova.
Lots of stuff.
Having the overworld in 2D look, makes the popup seem better.
Software = Upscaling, right?
Hi Res = Software, but with higher native rez
OpenGL = Accereated native rez
Emu Gen = No anon, the GPU DO NOT SUPPORT THAT
DeSmuME X432R allows increasing the internal resolution by up to 4x.
The first panel, Software, is simply an upscaled view at 1x.
The second panel, Hi res, is SoftRasterizer at 4x with "Enable Edge Marking" enabled.
The third panel, OpenGL, is OpenGL at 4x with "Enable Edge Marking" disabled.
The fourth panel, memeXD, is someone meming to a dangerous degree.
Any of you guys managed to get Rayman 2 running with gamepad support on Windows 7? I tried using the dinput fix (https://code.google.com/p/noser-sandbox/downloads/list) but it just makes the game crash on startup. I just want to use my DS3, playing 3D platformers on a fucking keyboard is for retards and I'm asking you guys instead of /vr/ because they mostly fall into the mentioned category.
If it's not doable I guess just running the N64 version in SP mupen would be the logical thing to do.
Didn't even know there was a PS2 version. The PS1 version has a whole bunch of extra stuff like voiced cutscenes and videos and such. Only problem is that the music is multi-track.
I'd written off the PS2 port as being the "shite" version though, is it really the best? Seems like that was officially released on the PS3 so it should be playable without any emulation issues on ps2_netemu.
I can't stand PSX 3D, DC emulation is shit (and no libretro port available) plus I have a hard-on for the N64 graphics so that was my line of reasoning for the pick, but maybe my information was off.
RA isn't hard to use though, you just select to run the game with the mupen core and that's that. Still though pls confirm if PS2 is actually good, that'd be great
N64 has the least content and the shittiest music with the 2nd shittiest grphics
PSX has the best music with the least content and the worst graphics
DC and PC are pretty much the best but PC has slighly worse music and slighly better graphics
PS2 has the most content, a reworked overworld, reworked levels, new levels, a better progression system etc but it has worse than DC graphics (480i vs 480p) still would recommend playing that one over the other even with how shit PCSX2 is.
The 3DS port is good just slightly worse than DC.
The DS port is an abomination.
>They say that modifying games to connect to a new server (or to avoid contacting a server at all) after publisher support ends—letting people continue to play the games they paid for—will destroy the video game industry.
>making a game you paid for continue to work will destroy the industry
>"phase through floors" bug
>worse graphics than even the PSX version
Nah anon it's shit, or at the very least shittier than any other version
Some guy in the last thread did. They always ask you "what exactly is broken?" and then you say "shit nigga I dunno but people point out regressions weekly in these threads" and then they're like "see, there's nothing, you can't name anything, you're all lying"
I don't use RA, so how can I know what the problems are or bother to remember the details? I just tell someone who asks "what are these regressions?" that people post about them all the time. Do you think there's some conspiracy where people want to make it look like there are more regressions in RA than there really are?
It's an inferior copy of another version it doesn't even have anything special outside of being an handheld release why bother with it, it would be like not wanting to forget the Sonic 1 port on GBA.
OK, lets list recent bugs/regressions in RA itself (not the cores) just to clear things up
Rewind not working - fixed by https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/commit/634fda75e260eeadbb03da7bbd0d3dbbf8bb00ed
Audio DSP plugins not working - Fixed by https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/commit/0c7da8b685467ca6dd472c1edb51d6cc2335d0c1 and https://github.com/libretro/RetroArch/commit/b138ab8b575960680b3f68ad37b3182957c75f73
What else is there besides this?
Do you seriously expect someone to go download RA and go hunting for regressions because someone asks? Join reality, anon. You'll get the same regurgitated answer representing the collective knowledge of the general as anyone else: RA has people reporting regressions all the time, GSDX is black box, N64 emulation is a mess, Dolphin devs hate Intel users, PPSSPP is preddy gud, Zeromus is just there for maintenance on Desmume, etc.
>I've seen a lot of posts lately about people shitting on other emulators asking loaded questions, i.e. Project 64 vs MupenPlus64, or about PCSX2's method of management (or lack thereof).
And on top of that, everybody is talking about how "all emulators should be like Dolphin". Can we just stop with that? Not all projects are Dolphin. Dolphin is really great, don't get me wrong, but not all emulators can be like Dolphin.
Can we just be happy that we HAVE emulators? All of this passive aggressive complaining is really killing the mood in this subreddit.
>The team behind dolphin is a good example of how a professional team builds software
Looks like we have infected them with our pessimism about emulation at large. That's good, leddit needs to face reality once in awhile. It can't all be happy fun "le silly robot boards hehe"
The only people willing to do work as tedious and ridiculous as creating emulators and the only ones who care about the emulation scene rather than just playing games all tend to be strange and broken people. It isn't really that normal to care about the details. It's human to gloss over them.
Fuck. Stop bringing that up.
That shit was twisted by any stretch of the imagination.
He should literally be neutered. No person who's that fucking psycho should be allowed any chance to breed.
The issue tracker is not a list of regressions, you moron. Most of those are issues that have always existed or are issues caused by external problems in device drivers, or are feature requests.
Either put some effort to verify supposed "regressions" are actual issues or just shut the fuck up about it. It's really that simple.
We really don't need emugen spreading unfounded rumors, we should be spreading facts.
Does anyone here plays with a Dualshock 2 controller? I'm having problems with the D-pad and with the left analog stick, the D-pad acts like the analog stick. It's problematic for games that use the D-pad for something else.
Because enough people like that bring down humanity as a whole.
If you get enough dumb faggots like him, you start getting dumbass groups like SJWs, extremes on either side of the political fence, etc.
The Dark Ages were caused by a bunch of psychos being allowed to roam free and rule over the masses.
Allowing the small stuff like this is how the big stuff begins.
>The Dark Ages were caused by a bunch of psychos being allowed to roam free and rule over the masses.
This is any different than now how?
