How old do you have to be for something to be "classic?"
May was introduced 13 years ago back in 2002.
Dawn was introduced 9 years ago back in 2006
Both characters are nearly or over a decade old. By contrast when Hoenn was airing people considered Misty "classic" and she was only gone for like 2-3 years at the time.
It depends on the person.
People can feel nostalgia for May and Dawn, people can feel nostalgia for anything.
I think most people would only consider Misty stuff as classic, but people who are particularly enamoured with May/Dawn and feel nostalgia towards them might do so.
Sorry anon, but "classic" and "retro" are shifting terms. You're getting old and people will look back at Gen 1 the same my gen looks upon Colecovision.
GBA and DS won't be modern forever.
My personal boundary for "classic" is anything below Gen III.
>Be over a decade old
>Not being featured regular for 5+ years
I'd say those are the requirements to be considered retro. May is in a weird zone since she's obviously more relevant again due to ORAS.
May's largely the best known female lead (aside from Misty), to the general pokemon population for those reasons:
- She was the very first new female lead in the anime. Whenever people think about who came after Misty, May is the first thought on everyones mind.
- May was the first playable female lead at the start of a game gen in R/S...since Kris didn't exist till Crystal version.
- AG had the highest ratings of all the series after the OS simply because it aired back in the early 2000's when more people watch TV, so just by default she was the most watched/viewed female after Misty.
- May was also the first coordinator of the show, so even though Dawn got more screentime as a co-star, May is still the one who started the Contests arcs.
Its why I consider May practically a classic character now. Dawn almost too, but maybe next year when she hits a decade.
I would consider Gen 3 as a whole retro, as well as the GBA and arguably the Gamecube at this point. Millennials won't admit it off the bat but they're getting pretty damn old now. The GBA and GC will be 15 years old next year and R/S will be 14 years old.
So yes, May is a retro character. Give Dawn a few more years.
>Misty lost her tsundere personality once she got Togepi anyway.
Yeah, its pretty obvious after the anime stopped being a slapstick comedy that's when Misty's role in the show pretty much died. During Orange Islands they tried to play up Pokeshipping but then they abandoned that too once Johto started.
Looking back Misty had no real reason to be in the Johto saga at all. They just had no new girl to replace her with at the time.
There surprisingly wasn't that much for Pokeshipping during the Orange Islands. Around five or six episodes out of thirty-five near the beginning of it and what they did with the movie. They pretty much killed it near the tail end of OI then all through Johto.
I loved how big May's boobs were in the early AG episodes.
This is straight from the anime. Wouldn't you agree that she's quite busty here?
And here, just for the sake of comparison.
Scenes like this show how large her breasts really are. You see the entire outline of her breasts.
May's boobs were a lot more noticeable in her Wallace Cup outfit than the loose fitting Emerald clothes.
>May's contest costume was meant to show off some midriff and feet
Yes. The amount of fanart we got from that outfit was also great.
>there are people on /vp/ right now feeling nostalgic about the "old school classic" DPP
>there are people on /vp/ right now that started with BW/B2W2
>in a year or two there will be people on /vp/ that go "damn, this game was my childhood" about XY and ORAS
I wish we saw more scenes of May in this bathing suit.
May/Dawn is probably the most popular main girl yuri ship.
Nowadays people pair Dawn with Serena more because they're so alike, but May/Dawn had a huge fanart following for years.
>its fucking 13 years old
>over a decade and a half
A classic inplies that it has stood the test of time to be introduced again and again to new generations and its aknowledged by them. Like Bethoven or TMNT...
Neither May nor Dawn has had that treatment, but Brock was a classic for a while, and Ash ofc is still
And yet May is the best known female companion after Misty to even casual fans who stopped watching a decade ago. Literally everyone knows who May is, but they probably aren't familiar with more recent characters like Iris and Serena unless they're current watching.
Well yeah, when I meant a decade ago I really meant "13 years ago" since May was introduced back in 2002.
Time really does fly. Some people tend to forget how long its been since Misty left the anime and when May was introduced, people act like that just happened 5 years ago or something when in reality it was 13 years ago.
Probably why you still see people ranting about Misty on forums like she's relevant, even though she's been gone for 13 years. People have no grasp of the passage of time. I think they believe Misty just left 5 years ago.
