I have never, ever played a Pokemon game, on any platform. Never even seen a game being played.
Be honest, are the games worth getting into? I've seen pictures of Pokemon games and read a bit about them and I get the impression they are a bit like very grindy JRPGs with lots of random battles. Is that a fair assessment? I do like grindy RPGs, but only if they have a decent story to keep me interested.
The games are very average. They are only good because it's Pokemon. You're a trainer, you catch cute animals, train them and fight them, select your own team of 5, etc. You don't really get immersed in the game, you get immersed in the Pokemon world.
I'm currently marathoning the BoF series in order, from I to IV, i'm still in I and just got Nina back into my party after she fell in Tunlan and lost her memory. I think i'm close to the end, i mean, there aren't many places i haven't already been to and now that she can fly i can finally reach Scande and fight Zog.
So far i've loved the game, almost as much as i loved Chrono Trigger, but there are 4 things in it that were let-downs and could have been done a lot better: 1_ The fixed magic damage, that was a terrible idea. It... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
The MistyRG is probably an item that can be used in battle to produce a spell effect like the QuakeKey
Breath of Fire is an old game that's mostly more about the aesthetic of the adventure than it is about the mechanics or anything, style over substance, but the style is quite good. Nice Graphics, Nice Music. Weird and occasionally disturbing subject matter.
The main thing I'd caution you on with the series is that it gets progressively more and more disturbing and heart breakingly depressing with each installment, like a person with PTSD descending... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I wish I could play BoF for the first time again. That game was so nice. For several reasons the first game is my favourite in the series along Dragon Quarter, and the music is among my all-time favourites. If you don't mind remakes, the GBA version has some neat portraits and fixes some things (such as the ridiculous encounter rate) but the music became worse.
Good luck trying to get the Boombada in II. It's been almost 15 years and I never got it right.
Does anyone else here prefers the original Baldur's Gate over the sequel? I just find the original to be much more open-worldy. You can get to like level 4 before even completing the first few quests and basically just wander around and do whatever you want. BG2 is much more linear and standardized, which has its advantages, to be sure (especially for new players), but lacks the feeling of freedom the original had. Not to mention starting a story from scratch is a bit more interesting than in medias res.
>>3420678 I mostly share your viewpoint. In BG2 literally every little sub-location HAD to have a purpose, hence many if not most outdoor maps were cut much smaller, while in BG1 each outdoor area was maximum size. You still had a large degree of freedom in Athkatla, but once you ventured out if kinda felt like "BG on rails", both in the choice of locations you could go to, and in what you could do in a given location.
Picked this up along with dreamfall in the last steam sale and I'm really glad I did. Just beat it and can't wait to start the sequel. Any other suggestions for adventure games in the same vein? The Tex Murphy games any good?
The sequels, while not P&C, do share that sense of exploration and discovery, while continuing the overarching storyline. Other games like this I personally have played mostly fall into the Broken Sword series.
>doin the pre-rendered background thing before Myst >dat opening theme >savin da world thru time-travel >enjoying jazz fusion with the sound of dogs barking everytime you time-travel >the one maze in the game comes with automap
You can also get the remake, Pegasus Prime, but be warned it adds in some real BS. Instead of being treated to a nice video when traveling on the minecarts,... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I'd like to make a shot priority calculator, similar to what you'd find in theorycrafting circles, but I'm wondering if anyone has made something like this in the past or do people just use their best judgement?
Why make this? >Alphanumeric/DMD machines often lie how many points something is worth >Optimal scoring rotations for 5/10/20 minute restricted gameplay >Infinite extra balls available? bonus just became the biggest thing on the playfield

I'm heading to Japan in a couple of weeks and am hoping to pick up one of these bad boys over there for a decent price.
I was hoping some of you could also recommend some cool Japanese games I could grab too that are possible to play without actually speaking Japanese. Obviously I'm keen to get Rhythm Tengoku and some of the Bit Generations games... I've heard of Starfy a lot too... but what are some others I should keep an eye out for?
>>3437673 >This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier. With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro", though the remainder of the sixth generation (Xbox, PS2, GameCube) will not.
Sup /vr/? I dreamt with a song some days ago and I was finally able to make it out on Guitar Pro. I'm sure my mind didn't make it up while I was sleeping so I asked around with some of my friends and a lot of them said they recalled it from some retro game and some even pointed specifically towards the Sonic saga but none of them can remember what level it's from. Could any of you recognize it? https://soundcloud.com/user-421404603/weird-song
Sonic looks good in most poses, I don't deny that, but the revolving sprites are painful to look at. Sonic 3 has much far better rate of quality with its sprites, and the style is also spot on. Sonic CD has the best sprites though.
>-AIZ ends with the player falling down, into HCZ; which ends with the player being splashed up, into MGZ; which includes a climactic, ariel boss battle that ends with the player being lowered down, into CNZ; which ends with the player being shot out of a cannon, high up into the mountain tops of ICZ; which ends with the player burrowing a tunnel in the snow, falling down into LBZ; which ends with the player riding some falling launch debris and ultimately plummeting down, into MHZ; which ends with the player hitching a ride upwards, into the airship that... >>3435297 I did something similar for a list of games to run on emulators on a Wii. It's kind of long, so I'll only post the NES, SNES, and Genesis portions unless you want to see the whole thing.

There's a reason it was in bargain bins and cheap as fuck even when it came out. It was one of those games that your parents would pick up when they were shopping "oh a super cheap game, let's get it for Anon!"
These days it's only worth playing through for laughs. Somehow the Genesis version managed to be better, believe it or not, but it's still not good. One thing with the game stuck with me though, that's the theme where you fight the mummy fucker, once in a while I get it stuck in my head.
