If NES sprites are limited to 3 colors + transparency, why does SMB2 Mario have 4?

Red
Blue
Skin tone
White

Because the white portions of Mario's eyes are different sprites overlaid the rest of his face. They used the same sprite-stacking technique for Mega Man's face.

As we all know, PAL-versions of most games tend to be worse than their NTSC counterparts due to poor porting. However, games made by European developers can actually be better in the PAL-version.

I've been thinking myself about getting a PAL N64 just for the great Rareware games, but is there any other console where getting a PAL model is worth the cost and effort?

It's superior, but most games were made for NTSC, and very poorly ported, if they actually changed them at all.
>>
>>3368462
What's so good about having huge black borders at top and bottom of the screen and having games run 5/6 of the speed they were intended to?

Sure you could argue that PAL format is superior after PAL 60hz finally became a thing but that happened after systems covered by this board.

they play it like they expect it to be exactly like DD 2 and get frustrated with different controls. also alot of people claim it's too hard because you only get one life.

No Tails is forgivable, but the lack of spindash just makes it less fun than the other early entries. That lack of sudden momentum when you return to the game after playing a later one is painful.

Familiarize yourself with the controls first, realize that any time you die before you make it to a save point, you're going to start from the actual beginning of the entire game at level one. Realize that MP is going to be a fixed commodity that you can actually completely run out of for a good long while.

Where you are right now, I recommend you learn to look UP and DOWN and walk SIDEWAYS and RUN. Explore outside until you find a WEAPON and ARMOR and MAGIC CRYSTAL, then consider exploring in the caves and fighting monsters more seriously.

Get used to turning...

Are super bars really necessary for a 2D fighting game? I feel like they trivialise a lot of the basic mechanics, and footsies only start to matter in high level play because of it. After all, why would you practice basic skills where's all sorts of complex tools with which you can take out 60% of your opponent's lifebar. Just get pounded until you combo into Super into Ultra, and you're all set.
I can understand that fighters are a derivative genre and long-time fans crave new systems to master after obsessively playing "traditional" titles, but...

Master of Darkness is a good one that I've been playing lately. If you like Castlevania you'll like it.

Ninja Gaiden is another very good one.

Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster World and Wonder Boy III are all great. Wonder Boy III is my favourite Master System game.

The MS version of Columns is great.

Transbot is very fun.

Galaxy Force is good.

Then there are other great ones like Sonic 1, 2, and Chaos, Phantasy Star, Double Dragon, Streets of Rage, Renegade, Spy vs Spy, Alladin, Golden Axe, Teddy Boy, WWF etc.

Hey /vr/ I know about Oregon Trail of course, but I don't remember really ever playing the old macs at school as a child and don't know what games might be out there for this dinosaur.

Anyone have one of these Interact Memory 2X Cards? Specifically the one with a button instead of a switch? It's basically 2 PS1 memory cards in one that you can switch between. I just bought one and it's stuck on memory card 2. Does anyone know how to switch it? I suspect that there's a watch battery in there for the switch, can anyone confirm?

Thanks.

ultimate emulation setup

Today i bought a SNES after years of only playing modern HDMI games.

I plug it in to my HD tv using the yellow, white and red cables it came with and i started it up. i'm sure if it's me or not but it looks really fuzzy and way too pixelated. I plugged in my PS3 (which i haven't used in 2-3 years) with the same YWR cables and it looks like this too.

Is there something wrong with the tv or is this the way it always looked and i'm just too used to 1080p?

Well composite kinda sucks so if it looks like shit that's normal.
>>
>>3373561
turn the sharpness to 0 and turn off any signal processing. If it flickers your tv is interpreting 240p as 480i and you need a line doubler. There is the hd retrovision component cable but I haven't tried one yet so I can't recommend it.
>>
Buy a Framemister and use RGB scart with said adapter.

If you are using a mini, mod it for RGB, it's sharper and never use sync on composite, only composite sync, sync on Luma is good too (mostly for PS1/2 games due to a lack of composite sync pin out).

Not really. KoF'98 is better for several reasons:

—not having a broken move cancel system

—hopping/A+B/C+D mechanics

—much better balance

—not trying this hard to be like competitors

—actually playable grapplers

—more move types like proximity unblockables etc.

Garou has 1 advantage: amazing graphics. As for the rest, KoF'98 takes the crown in everything.

You need more help than we can give you. Seek professional medical attention. If this is legit and you somehow slipped through the cracks of the education system (probably America) you are mentally disabled and need real help.

If you're white you can ask a police officer to help as well. Good luck.
>>
>>3372329
I gotta agree with this poster. It's very simple. Before FF7, FF's in the US were numbered in the order they were released there. After FF7, no one uses the old release numbering, and just refers to each game by it's actual title. You actually have to be retarded to not understand this simple concept.

So I popped in some BattleTanx Global Assault last night out of the blue. No reason for that particular game, just felt like it.

Anyway, as I was playing, I was suddenly overcome with a feeling of sadness. Memories of going to friends houses after school, sleepovers, birthdays, just straight up split screen couch gaming.

I cant be the only one who feels this way. I was wondering how you guys deal with the feeling that it will never be like that again? More or less, retro gaming, will just be a solo thing from here on out.. Kinda sucks.

Dude, invite a couple friends over for drinking and Goldeneye. Or even just pick a platformer and pass the controller on death. It's great fun and helps you get through some games that might otherwise be boring alone.

Idk, I did this just 2 days ago and it's hard to find a group of people who will tolerate n64 games. We played Smash and Goldeneye and some other stuff. The stuff that sits the best is Diddy Kong Racing and the like but unless you have childhood friends about or people who really did this when they were young then you really only have a short distraction before people start popping off to other entertainment sources. There really isn't enough focus to get to the point of learning a game or gaining any percipience....
