125 KB,
A thread for shit you never noticed in games before.

I have beat Super Mario World 4 times since I first ever played it in the early 90's. I have played through a good bit of the game a few times more than that, but never completed it.

Just recently I thought I would play and noticed the scrolling is jumpy. How the hell did I never notice how jumpy it is?

Original hardware on lcd/dlp/crt, Wii on oled/dlp/crt, Ipad pro, Pixel C, Nexus 6, shield tablet. You name it, jumpy.

Is my entire life a lie?

What did he mean by jumpy?

Also, it took me forever to realize that Bow-wow in Link's Awakening is rentable anytime you want you want after you've returned him (to get by the monkey).
>>
>>3670367
Smw scrolling has different states. Typically the vertical position is based on the platform that you're on. (Iirc in a vanilla dome stage you can walk up a slope and actually disappear because the cameras still centered on the platform you landed on.)

The exception is when you're running at top speed. In that case the camera centers on Mario and follows him around, which could lead to "jumpiness". The case is probably that you're playing much faster and running through things than you did before.
>>
>>3670367
Pretty much all the music in SWM is the same tune played at different tempos.

Only noticed when I stay down and really listened to it.

The retro community seems large enough that a proper retro console could actually be manufactured now, and actual games could be created for the system and purchased like the old days.

With FPGA's, I don't see why a new 16-bit console hasn't been made in the recent years with new cartridges.

What do you play around Christmas time? Any /vr/ Christmas stories?

I beat Gannon on Christmas Eve 1989, so it has been a tradition to play through once a year. I also like to play the winter levels in SNES Donkey Kong on Christmas day. They seem comfy and slow to me.

Talk about obscure, the company behind Halcyon went bankrupt days before the official release. It sold for $2500 in 1985 money and that's with the company taking a big financial hit with every console produced. While there are a good hundred of these things circulating due to store owners keeping their limited stock of consoles, they may have never officially sold a single unit.

It only had 2 games, a meh football simulator and one great game, the definitive version of Thayer's Quest.

It's not, as wRPGs are still discussed here, lurk more.
But if you're gonna bitch about japanese culture on a fucking chan, I recommend you read the history of 4chan.
Also, while the founder of 4chan is American, the current owner is japanese (no less than the old admin of 2ch, where moot got the idea).

1) AVOID SPOILERS LIKE THE BAD AIDS. In fact you should probably not come back to this thread just to be in the safe side. The game has a fantastic story ,- in fact it is almost pure story - you don't want to ruin it by finding out what happens in advance

2) Play a bit of Star Control 1 (via Genesis emulation) to get in the mood.

All three have emulators. The Odyssey and ColecoVision I never owned, but some of Intellivision's sports games (especially baseball) hold up really well. There's some ports of Atari 2600 games that are better on it (like Demon Attack). Of the three it's the best imho.
>>
The Coleco boasted being better than the Atari 2600 and having more faithful arcade ports like Pac-Man, Galaga and the system seller was Donkey Kong.
The Coleco was like in-between an atari 2600 and a NES.
I think the hardware was similar to the SG-1000.

One of my favorite games on it is LadyBug, if you like Pac-Man, I think this one is the best pacman clone around.
>>
Colecovision really had the best arcade ports of its time.

Intellivision had some neat little games, like Nightstalker, the Dungeons and Dragons games, Astroblast, and lots of good sports games.

Odyssey was very simple, but the Odyssey 2 had a few fun games like Pick Axe Pete and the "KC" games. It also had some board games that came complete with real boards and pieces, but you'd need the manuals to understand them.

When did your tastes mature and you finally realized SoR 3 had the best soundtrack in the series?

>most complex and abstract songs
>more uncommon time signatures
>doesn't try doing easy listening music for pop appeal and goes straight for the hardcore scene
>technical mastery of the OPN2 FM chip - one of the least accurate soundtracks on an emulator

I tried playing PoR. It's undeniably on different level compared to other games of 80s, but interface is still borderline unusable. I made it to part where you are supposed to fight 2 trolls and stalled there. I know it should be doable with merc, but I don't want to hire merc and trolls should not be an encounter for such low level party. Still much better than crap like Wizardry 1 and M&M 1 though, maybe one day I will pick it up on GoG and give it another try.

You can leave this fight until your mages are level 3.
The Stinking Cloud spell is overpowered. It can even essentially instant kill everything in the Goldbox games except magic immune enemies like the Beholders and Steel Golems.
>>

I thought the Savage Frontier games were the best. Their interface and overall gameplay are a major improvement over the first games. They're one par with the others history-wise. I like how you're given total freedom over what city you'll be visiting next, giving them a good open world feel.

Finally a discussion about Super Hang-on and it gets utterly ignored.

Why.

You placed Hard Road and ESPECIALLY Winning Run lower than Outride a Crisis, that's why.

Retroarch takes effort because the UI is full of submenus upon submenus that don't explain fuck about what they do

It becomes a single smoothly running system once you figure it out, it's pretty cool to be able to emulate multiple systems in one singular UI and a controller-based menu

I guess I don't see the appeal of working with a program a while just to be able to emulate more than one system

You are getting your ass kicked at missile command
