>>3571857 There were a ton, though a lot of them were ports of arcade and computer games. Just off the top of my head I can think of Tetris, Gauntlet, Battletoads, Deja Vu, Uninvited, Wizardry, Prince of Persia...
This, some western devs did good jobs at porting arcade games to the NES.
Joe & Mac was published by Data East but actually developed by Elite Systems. The results are actually quite good. It's not arcade-perfect obviously but it's got some of the best parallax scrolling I've seen on the NES, just take a look at the first level
My uncle was going through stuff at my grandmother's house and gave me some boxes of his old games that have been sitting untouched in storage for 15 years. I'm guessing I should clean them before trying to play them? What should I use to clean them with? I don't have any video game specific cleaning stuff on hand.
He said this was a small part of whats there but he's still digging stuff out to get rid of and told me he'd let me know if he found the rest of his nes games and his 16 bit stuff.
Cotton swabs with isopropyl alcohol (do not get it on the labels) for the metal contacts. For the outer plastic shell, I use Pine-Sol diluted with water (be very careful with the label, dry it off fast).
>>3570184 With the original translation there are certain things like kneeling with the crystal that are ridiculous to expect people to figure out on their own. I had to ask a guy in my class and he only knew because of Nintendo Power.
All that said, it's my favorite classicvania, among my favorite NES games and pretty much always has been. Opinions are never universal.
>>3570184 It's really boring. Zelda II and Mario II were different, but they were still a lot of fun. Simon's Quest is just a chore. It's not very difficult, it's padded out to all hell, graphically-speaking it looks pretty bad, and with so few challenges or any real sense of urgency there's not much point in playing it. The soundtrack is pretty great though.
>>3569818 It seems like everyone who has no experience with the genre thinks every fighting game is about doing insanely precise infinite combos all the time and has no desire to even try something on Fightcade. It's upsetting.
I bought a copy of Final Fantasy VII and it has a fucked Disc 1. I can't play past the intro segment where you blow up the thing. Disc 1 has tiny little bumps right at the edge of the disc where it must have been knicked. The other discs don't have that damage. It's too late to return it. I could try to sell it but that would just be a dishonest passing of the buck. I can't find anyone selling only Disc 1's online.
Is there anything I can do here or am I just screwed?
>>3569732 the bottom surface is simply clear plastic while the top of the disc with the printed logo and whatnot actually has the data encoded onto the bottom layer. if it's just the plastic that is damaged it can be resurfaced.
Also I wouldn't normally say this but FFVII is probably better emulated so you can use savestates to save on the map screen and avoid missing shit by accidentally cutting off areas by advancing the story too fast, and also so you can re-do story scenes and dialogue with different answers/different characters in the party
it's also a lot easier to see materia and shit on the maps when you're not playing on a CRT

Does anyone own of those devices that can play music from retro machines using actual hardware from those machines?
I know there are a few. This one is the GIMIC and it lets you attach sound modules that have sound chips from various older devices. You can either use it as a hardware synth, or use it to play sound files.

>>3569591 In my opinion it's generally better to buy a flashcart and use a player to play the music. It probably costs only slightly more and you get the added benefit of being able to play other roms on the system. The type of set up in your picture works with the YM chips because they're all so similar. Other chips might not be compatible because of different form factors/setups. eg: I fucking dare you to put a SID6581 in a C64 board meant for the 8580. (please don't because it will destroy the SID and they're... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>3569754 But that's not even a Yamaha chip like all those listed! It's a very useful aberration that such a range of devices used yamaha FM chips.
No OPZ listed though, that's unfortunate. I think some people would like that because it was used in synthesizer keyboards - popular ones, I'm under the impression. Though there was a keyboard with an OPL2 chip too, but OPZ was early with multiple waveform type FM synth.
No OPL4 either. They presumably didn't make many of those. That's... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I own an overclocked Raspberry Pi 2. It runs PS1 games quite well, yet 3D DOS games like Daggerfall and Carmageddon work like shit under Dosbox. Will upgrading to RPI 3 fix my problem? How is the performance of N64 and Dreamcast on RPI3? Can I buy some better microcomputer for my purposes? What do you use for emulation? Inb4 500W PC tower.

Hey dudes, I'm almost done I think with my doom map, I just dont know what to do past this part (pic related)
I want it to curve back around to the red room (after the large room with the switch in the top right opens a gate, unlocking the dead end beneath it) but I dont have any ideas for what to fit into that spot
here's the map DL link, tell me what you think I should do
>>3568862 >backloggery Thanks, I'll check them out. There is a decent app I used called My Game Collection but it is only available as a mobile app which is kind of shitty because I have tons of games and it takes forever to type on a phone for me.
>>3568235 Think of it like this; something has to be number 1, but this is a subjective thing, and if it's not something critically acclaimed and super popular then it'll just piss everyone off. Might as well just have the most popular high rated game at the top to keep the largest number of people happy, this way even the hipsters will understand "well, it's to keep everyone happy."
A more modern example; Skyrim being at the top of everyone's best of lists. Is it the best? Fuck no. Is it... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
Can anybody explain why does composite video blur everything so much?
I know NTSC standard by default used subsampling for color, so basically you had sharp BW picture, with slightly blurred color layered onto it. But composite output seems to blur both chroma AND luma. What gives? Basically, instead of 320 pixels horizontal resolution it displayed only 160, speaking of Genesis (albeit with more possible colors).
Also, speaking of Genesis, does anyone know what caused the infamous "rainbow" artifacts, e.g. like on tubes in Chemical Plant stage?
Because like its name says, it's a composite of all signals into one cable. Luma and chroma all in one bleeds together, the more you separate it the better the signals get resolved. It doesn't matter though as composite is how the games were intended to be played.
Does anyone else feel that playing RPGs or other slow-paced games when they're young is a waste of time that should be spent playing fast-paced action games? I have a small pile of RPGs I want to get into, but I also have a big pile of action games I want to play/beat, and I feel like I should do the fast games now when I'm 'young' (25) and am still at a peak for reflexes/finger dexterity/etc. I worry that I'll lose my edge as time goes on and won't be capable of playing stuff like Ninja Gaiden, for example, but see that as the perfect time to start... >>3564775 Daggerfall. God, imagine what could be done if Bethesda didn't do everything they could to keep the source code for themselves, and then lose it.
Think of the modding possibilities. Just think about what could be done with Daggerfall. How vastly it could've been improved. Every single cut and planned feature could've been added, plus who knows how many more.
Instead, because no one but (now former) Bethesda employees had access to the source code, there are only very precious few mods for... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
I have always loved Road Rash. I played the PS1 iteration of it, but it was also released on SegaCD, 3DO and PC. Not sure which came first (for this version of RR) maybe SegaCD?
Anyways, then and now my main gripe - What the FUCK is with the coloring of the FMVs? What kind of shit effect where they trying to achieve if any?
I am probably wrong, but I theorized that perhaps if it were released on the SegaCD first, maybe the color scheme was chosen to somehow mask all the digital artifacts? Shit theory but thats all I have.
Why couldn't they just leave... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
