I recently came into possession of all of the US PC Gamer 1999 issues with all of the corresponding CDs (see pic). These issues contain everything from contemporary reviews of Thief and SS2 to GOTY awards for games like Half-Life and Starcraft 1. There's even (retrospectively) hilariously optimistic features on games like Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever. Flipping through the mags and seeing ads for "new" games like Baldur's Gate right beside a preview for Deus Ex is brilliantly surreal. It's a bit of vidya history in one... Comment too long. Pic related. The NES port of Ultima 3 is rather awkward JRPG makeover of the series with its colorful palette blobs, upbeat soundtrack, utterly broken classes and a number of useless and exploitable content; but the game somehow manages to be charming nonetheless.
>>2942016 The NES version of Ultima: Exodus will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first RPG I ever played (my uncle bought it when I was really young), and the entire reason I wanted to learn to read so early on.
Because of Ultima, I also played and (mostly) understood Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy before I started kindergarten.
Why no love for early video game mascots? Has /vr/ completely forgotten about series like Pac-Man and Frogger, or have they just aged that poorly?
Pac-Man did spawn a number of decent platformers in the '90s, although they might have been largely overlooked. And Frogger got a nice reboot during the fifth generation, the first 3D Frogger title being one of the highest-selling games for the PS1 overall. So it seems strange that I've never encountered any discussions about these series here on /vr/.
Anyone else here a completionist when it comes to retro games? Where do you draw the line? Max level? Min-maxing stats? 99 of all equipment?
I'd be curious how some of you guys approach games that don't have entirely clear objectives for a "perfect" save file, like RPGs with mutually-exclusive quests or multiple alignment paths. Games like Elder Scrolls, for instance.
Mainly just play and beat the game. I always go for the hardest difficulty setting and absolutely no cheating or shortcuts. And if there are bonuses such as secret things you can unlock, i have to unlock them all.
"You may see symbols above enemies in the battle sequences. These mean that the enemy can make you dizzy, put you to sleep, or call in some reinforcements." -Russ T.
Why does he say this? There are no symbols above enemies unless they're inflicted with a status effect. Just to be sure, I looked at a Dark Koopa, a Crazee Dayzee, and a Groove Guy, but there are no symbols. Is this a scrapped feature? A translation error maybe?
>>2944478 >unlike Mario and Luigi SSS was good and BIS was okay. Didn't play DT but I've heard it was alright. I'd say it's a worthy successor, but that's probably just because I don't think very highly of SMRPG(it's a great game, but nothing too spectacular in my opinion). M&L isn't as good as traditional Paper Mario, but it's not bad.

I know Nintendo fanboys are gonna rush in to say "all of them kek," But I’m looking for THE WORST Genesis/Mega Drive games. Not Sonic 3D blast circlejerk I’m talking absolutely horrible like Dark Castle and X-Perts.
Fucking X-Perts, not only was Eternal Champions wasted as a franchise but this game was so clunky and unresponsive. NO MUSIC, permadeath, shittiest combat system, and a game in 1996, you'd think they know how to make a game on genesis by then.
MS DOS probably holds the award for most nostalgic games
>Shadows of Darkness
I have very vague but very fond memories of this game. I was super young and would watch my brothers play it. One thing I remembered in particular was the little girl and her monster friend, and the guy who hung himself. When I was little, I remember my brothers laughing their asses off at this game and I never understood why. Watching the game now, I get it, the game was hilarious lol.
