What went so wrong? I mean it wasn't just Daikatana, it was JOHN FUCKING ROMERO'S Daikatana. You know you've fucked up when the Gameboy Color port is ten times better than the PC game it was adapted from.

I'll sum it up:

1. John Romero was only one part of the reason for ID's success. Alone he lacked the artists, programmers, etc of ID.

2. Peter Principle. Romero was a level designer and designer. He was promoted to project manager. A position he never had before. He proceeded to completely mismanage the project at every level. Blowing money on a fancy suite. Giant office with everything imaginable. And then changing engines several times forcing them to remake the entire game each time.
>>
>>3529201
Romero hired a bunch of modders who had never made a commercial game before. That's fine if you're an experienced project manager (Gabe Newell had experience in Microsoft doing exactly that), but Romero was a Tim Schafer-tier project manager.

Doing the business or managerial side of things just wasn't part of his talents.

That chick is a pro at Streets of Rage games.

I prefer Turtles in Time on the SNES. Nothing against HH, it's good but it feels like it offers less than what the SNES game did, which was the arcade game plus more.
Only thing I like better on arcade is the fact it has 4 player mode, Konami should have made TiT multitap-compatible.

93 replies and 19 images submitted. Click here to view.

>>3519806
PSOne was that lighter colored slim model. The rest are all the same thing.
>>
PSX: how video game magazines unofficially abbreviated PlayStation, I believe due to an early code name related to "play station experience" or just something that came up with the Sony America marketing team but then kind of died away, still some developers still addressed to the console as "PSX" (like Midway did in one of their arcade collections).

PS1 is how people started unofficially abbreviating the PlayStation once the PS2 was announced.

PSOne is the "slim" or smaller model of the PlayStation.

Hope that helps.

What does /vr/ think of Technos Japan? How come they couldn't stick with one consistent localized title for the Kunio series (e.g. Renegade, River City, Crash 'n the Boys) for the English versions? Why did they kept switching Billy and Jimmy's hair/outfit colors between games and why did they allow Tradewest to make that awful Double Dragon V fighting game? Does anyone care about Combatribes or any of the other non-franchise games?

I played the fuck out of river city ransom when they came out. I had that big map with all the shops from nintendo power.

Combatribes was at a local gas station but the gameplay was a little dated compared to other 90s fighting games and it seemed dead on arrival.

BOF3 is the closest one to a "pure adventure." The other ones either have more emphasis on creating a home base that you constantly return to. There's hardly any backtracking in BOF3 so it feels more like a legit adventure than those other three.

Why do you consider his work "shit"? My experience from having played several of the games he translated in both languages is that he did a fucking superb job as far as his skills as a translator go, and that any notable shit (like SoM) were the fault of other circumstantial issues beyond the scope of his abilities as a translator.

What, like Working Designs' literal meme translations? Woolsey struck the best balance between creativity and accuracy of the era. The 'retranslations' of his work out there are ridiculous exercises in autism completely stripped of any charm or soul. Some people just don't get it.

54 KB,
Why do people love this game and consider it to be one of the greatest on PS1?
I tried it a couple of days and I don't get it. The combat is tedious and the environment feels so empty and dull even for a PS1 game.
How did it hook you up?

Nobody considers that. It just had good voice acting.

You're absolutely right, it's combat gets stale fast (though the initial novelty of "hey these are vampires, you have to impale, burn, or drown them" was pretty cool at first). It's more about the story, the dialogue, the voice acting, and feeling of exploration throughout. The world and it's denizens are interesting, and backed by amazing voice talent and writing. If you want gameplay, Soul Reaver is probably the worst game out of the entire Legacy of Kain series, but it's a great entry point story wise.

I have it on Dreamcast. Dropped it after an hour, but I'm going to give it another chance one day.

ooga booga where the Castlevania thread at?

I'm playing the japanese release of CV3 for the sake of better music, without having played the US release first. Just how much easier is the NTSJ version?

If you're good at the game, not terribly. Most of the difficulty differences stem from the Japanese release's more varied damage outputs from enemies. In the Western release everything hits with equal brutality.

There are some other differences, though. Dracula's last form in the Western release is notably better since his lasers are a bit more dangerous. There may be some other big things I'm not remembering, but I think that's the gist. Either version is great.

International version has quite a few reworked sprites most of which look better and it has a "second quest" but no titties.
