I'm currently playing GMDX 8.0 for Deus Ex and it's pretty great, easily the best overhaul mod the game has to offer, much better than the over-marketed Revision. What are some other great overhauls for older PC titles that gives the game a second life?
>>2848136 GMDX is a mechanics overhaul, it rebalances augmentations, skills, adds perks, enhance enemy AI, minor scenery changes, revamped difficulty (harder than the original). Check out the moddb page http://www.moddb.com/mods/gmdx/ but keep in mind that version 8.0 won't release to the public yet (but you can request it to the author via PM)
Why SNES games are so vivid compared to GBA ports? I began to play Final Fantasy II on SNES and it seems to look a lot better than FF IV Advance. Let's say, enemy death animation is a lot more interesting.
>>2845467 >>2845510 There's a patch for that. It fixes the color so it looks exactly like the SNES version. For VI and IV, dunno if V also has one. As an added bonus there's also a patch to fix the weird soundfont of the FF games on the GBA.
Playing it right now, it's really fast compared to most jrpgs, a lot of the towns are incidental and just there, you don't spend much time in them at all; they just funnel you into the next dungeon and sometimes the next dungeon funnels you into the next dungeon. There's very little downtime unless you have issues like I do and spend most of your time at the item storage.
>>2845429 I started it but don't think I'll finish it. The combat is annoying because enemies take so goddamn long to kill, especially if you have a team with mostly mages (which is often the case early on when you've got the paladin, the monk who does shit damage, the twins and Tellah). Sure, using magic ends battles quickly but you usually don't have the TP to make it very far. And healing spells seem so weak for their TP cost. And fucking opening the map costs TP.
On the other hand bosses are piss... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
The voice over work in this is fucking crazy good, especially compared to other games from the time. A Japanese PlayStation game from 1998 with no weird inflections and little-to-no mistranslations, how did they do it?
just beat this tonight. Really fun game. controls seem a little weird at first, but you adjust and get used to them quickly and they become second nature. It plays like a parody version Adventure Island where you jump on enemies instead of throwing axes, I had no idea that the games had so much in common. also the Japanese television show that it's based on (Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan) is the Japanese equivalent and inspiration for America's Funniest Video's. so JJ & Jeff pretty much an video game version of AFV.
also, I had played this game... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.

Could a faulty limit switch on a Sega CD(2) lead to damaged gears and the sled attempting to go further away from the center than it should, or could damaged gears be mimicking a faulty limit switch?
Bought an "as is" Model 2 and I'm trying to get it up and running correctly. Reads discs, but seems to take a bit long to load at times (I have no "properly working" point of reference so I can't really say on that one) and tracking for audio at times. These are often times accompanied with grinding noises coming from the sled; The reason I'm not sure it's a limit switch issue is because one of the gears is a bit chewed up and that the grinding noise happens both when the assembly is near the center(what a limit switch problem would cause) as well as it pushing all the way out to the very edge.
If it is a limit switch issue (and as such need new gears or something along those lines) would someone be able to point me in the direction of decent instructions on how to go about either repairing said switch/bringing it back into proper alignment, or if it would be possible to replace the switch?
I have some video of the drive in action, but I still need to cut out the useless junk and/or possibly retake it as it the focus is debatable at times.
Why would anyone be so sadistic as to design a game like this? Even assuming it was the 80s and no one knew anything about proper game design, did no one who play tested it think it was too hard and speak up? I mean it's just common sense that people aren't perfect, yet they still made games that demanded perfection.
