Went to my parents house last night and saw pic related among a pile of Christmas decorations on the table. Forgot I even used to have this controller. Was excited to have it once again thinking my mom found it in storage or something. Opened it up to find snowflake ornaments stored inside. My mom has kept the box for close to 20 years now to store decorations kek
I'm looking for what's known as a "famiclone", so I thought that we could discuss those retro-machine clones in general anyway.
whats you opinion on them?
also - is there any half-way decent one that comes with straight ripped roms from NES games on aliexpress.com? all I find seem to have weird china-games
I just want something really cheap that allows for playing 8bit-era retro stuff on a TV - since a NES everdrive is too expensive for my current situation. only two criteria: first, it should have at least a couple of good NES classics... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
As far as I understand it the older clones were actual hardware clones and all the clones you see today are pretty much an emulator on a chip,if you just want a cheap way to play nes games they are good I guess but expect shoddy build quality and dodgy emulation ,and the bootleg carts are all designed to work on the real system but you would need a cartridge converter for famicom to nes
>>2835353 Reproducing exact hardware is about 500x more expensive than an emulator on a chip. There is almost no components in a "on a chip" machine. In fact if it supports original controllers, the hardware for the controller ports is most likely more money than the main board.
Hey /vr/, I just played through this and I absolutely loved it. I never played anything like it
Training characters to eventually turn them into a crafting currency, pretty much everything being optional, challenging platforming and puzzles in the hard mode dungeons, COOL AS FUCK BATTLE SYSTEM
The battle system really is deceptively simple, but actually practicing and timing your juggles out and maximizing damage is such a huge benefit. I really like how skillfully timing your moves gives more exp than just button mashing.
I don't know shit about these games beyond that Yoh & Kou Yoshinari did art for them but your description got me interested. I'm generally interested in JRPGs with fun gameplay that aren't entirely driven by things that other genres do better.
Every time someone says "this game has bad gameplay but look past that and enjoy the story" I fucking tune out and yet every time someone praises the gameplay in a JRPG I get interested.
>>2835125 Ha, I'd actually say it's pretty opposite of that. Almost all of the story and cutscenes come in what are essentially short stories of how characters end up dying.
It almost feels like a semi open world dungeon crawler or something. Very few of the areas you go to are really related to the story
Combat is kinda like xenogears, but each button represents a party member and everyone can attack at once. The skillful part of it comes from timing your attacks just right so you can juggle the enemy... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>"This 3D game looked so real and impressive then, but now the graphics aged badly! It's so weird to look back at it after all these years, it just looks ridiculous and blocky now! 3D ages badly!"
Wh...why is this statement so common? Old games always, ALWAYS looked blocky and weird compared to pre-rendered 3DCG in films. There was always a huge, glaringly noticeable compromise to be made if you wanted to make a real-time, interactive experience in 3D. The models of the original Half-Life, which came out in 1998, looked pretty... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
>>2835061 But why would it have looked "real" and amazing back then? I could always tell, even as a little kid, that "amazing" video game graphics were the result of a massive hardware compromise and that they always looked blocky as shit compared to even their 3DCG commercials. In fact, I judged the "best graphics" based on whatever got the closest to looking like the standard set by cinema. Were people that easily swayed by marketing hype?
Ok, so is there a game like Snatcher but with some RPG elements tacked on? And don't tell me about that chibi Snatcher RPG that already exists. I'm asking about basing all the gameplay on commands, first person, no transitions between change of scenery, investigative gameplay & puzzles, but with some turn based fights, exp and so on. I don't care if it's retro or not.
My friend told me the SNES version of Mortal Kombat was the best, I looked at him and told him it wasn't even the same engine as the arcade game. What was the best home version of Mortal Kombat? I gotta say the Genesis/Mega Drive version plays pretty damn well with a six button controller.
I've been looking at lists of the best games of all time, and I've noticed some Phantasy Star games make it onto the lists. My only exposure to the series is Phantasy Star Online and PSO2, so I'm wondering what of the non-MMO games are worth playing?
>>2834524 PS4 is basically Sega's FFVI and is one of the best period JRPGs. Great visuals, OST, characters, story. Definitely a must play.
PS1 is good and actually holds up better than FFI in my opinion. It's basically Wizardry and Might and Magic meet Dragon Quest, a solid classic graph-paper dungeon crawler. If that sounds up your alley, give it a play, but you might find it a little dated.
PS2 is a transitional game between I and IV and is supposed to be great with a good story, but I haven't... Comment too long. Click here to view the full text.
