Freya, Amarant, and Quina might as well have not been in the game at all. I really hope those three get more time devoted to them ifa remake/remaster/director's cut ever gets made for FF9 which won't happen
>>2755167 9 has its share of huge fanboys, but it's nowhere near the level of the more successful, well-known games like 7 and 10. It was received the same in Japan as it was everywhere else.
And don't quote me on this but I think that the creative team behind FF9 and/or the current shot-callers at Square have made it clear that they've basically forgotten about it and don't want to touch it again.
>>2755191 Yeah part of me is glad that they've left FF9 alone, and that it hasn't become mainstream and faggy like FF7 did. Still... I could really go for a director's cut or an HD remake, so long as it played the same and still felt like FF9.
They should've made a fighting game with all the FF cast like they did for that one Persona. And no Dissidia doesn't count, I mean a real fighting game. It'd be so fun to see Freya and all them come back.
>>2755206 There was one dungeon where Amarant bailed on you because he thought he could do it himself. So he goes away and eventually you find him and he learns the power of friendship or whatever. That was his big contribution to the plot.
I always put him in my party anyway because he's an extremely useful hybrid class. Hits hard and can heal/revive your niggas, and his Trance moveset is pretty great if I remember right.
>Things that suck about FF9 >Battle load times and battle time before you get Auto-Haste >Forced Red Light/Green Light minigame BS on disc 3 >Hot and Cold minigame you need to do for the good stuff is annoying as fuck >Wandering around and grinding in subpar equipment to get abilities >Plot falls apart pretty hard after disc 2?
Still, my 2nd favorite FF game, and my favorite PSX FF game. They did a damn good job of creating some beautiful scenery and locations to explore. Lindblum alone was worth the price of admission.
You really don't need to do this. Keep wearing the equipment if you want to learn the ability, switch equipment when you want to learn something new. Sometimes you're "forced" to use underpowered equipment in order to learn a useful ability, but there shouldn't be any grinding involved unless you run from fights a lot.
>>2755185 >And don't quote me on this but I think that the creative team behind FF9 and/or the current shot-callers at Square have made it clear that they've basically forgotten about it and don't want to touch it again.
Nah. The real reason FFIX is abandoned by Square-Enix is because the game was 100% Sakaguchi's baby and he's basically a pariah over there after The Spirits Within bombed.
>>2753289 >>2755143 I never got this complaint. Freya's story arch is simply complete after Burmecia/Cleyra and there is nothing they could done with her without ruioning her character. Seriously IF they were to continue the story between her and Fratley Freya would be downgraded fro strong independent woman to what Samus was like in Metroid Other M. Is that what you guys actually want?
More importantly why you guys care so much about Freya and Burmecians when the series has other near extint races with one or handful survivors? Why don't you ask or care about what happened to moogles and yetis in FFVI? Why don't you ask or care about what happened to cetras in FFVII? Why don't you ask or care about what happened to sorceresses in FFVIII? Why don't you ask or care about what happened to black mages in FFIX itself? Why do people care about burmecians so much?
>>2755585 >Hot and Cold minigame you need to do for the good stuff is annoying as fuck but that music, that addictive digging skill progression, the satisfaction of treasure hunting on the world map, and being rewarded with advanced gear. I loved that shit.
>>2756452 How about an optional dungeon where you go looking for a Legendary Magical Item™ that is rumored to have the power restore Fratley's memory? And if you complete the dungeon, Freya gets a nice accessory or piece of armor, and the ending sequence with Freya/Fratley is a little bit different.
Something like that would've been plenty. Amarant could've used something similar.
It's a sad commentary on the girls of FF9 or at least the ones you can actually have in your party... when the best of the bunch hardly had any screen time, dialogue, or story relevance after the 2nd disc.
>>2757436 That sort of Chrono Trigger approach to characters is great whenever it happens, but I honestly think people would be happy with less. Just a cutscene addressing the plot point would be fine. FF7 was good at this because you mostly revisited the character specific locations in disk 2 so everyone got a callback scene.
>>2756741 But that's exactly why it sucks. Because the rewards are worth it. Nobody would have a problem with lightning bolts or racing in X if you didn't have to do it to get a top weapon. Hot and Cold takes fucking ages, isn't fun enough to justify that in and of itself, and you have to do it to access the superboss and the multiverse's comfiest secret location.
>>2755167 >I wish it would get the FF7 compendium treatment.
Imagine how shitty all the compilation shit is. Now imagine it's about IX instead of VII and with no change in quality because it wouldn't be better just because it's about a different FF. It's modern SE we're talking here.
>>2756452 >Why don't you ask or care about what happened to moogles and yetis in FFVI? Haven't played VI so can't comment on this.
>Why don't you ask or care about what happened to cetras in FFVII? Because we actually payed attention to the game as it spells out what happened to them.
>Why don't you ask or care about what happened to sorceresses in FFVIII? Riona survived until the end of the game and it's pretty clear that sorceresses are rare as shit in that world. Plus it's not like they're actually another race or anything, they're just humans with some God's power in them and some seem to mutate for some reason. Supposedly Riona will pass her powers on to someone else before kicking the bucket.
>Why don't you ask or care about what happened to black mages in FFIX itself? Game makes it pretty clear they're going to all stop at some point like how Vivi did before Zidane returned. But Vivi having a son implies that they found some way to reproduce.
>Why do people care about burmecians so much? Beats the fuck outta me.
>>2756452 >Freya's story arch is simply complete after Burmecia/Cleyra and there is nothing they could done with her without ruioning her character. Then why did she exist in the first place? If they weren't going to do anything special that would've further developed her character after that particular event, it would've been better off had she been among those killed in said event.
>Seriously IF they were to continue the story between her and Fratley Freya would be downgraded fro strong independent woman to what Samus was like in Metroid Other M. In the hands of a good writer, I doubt that woild've happened. The relationship angle would've had a more proper development and conclusion, we woud've actually known how the fuck Fratley survived Cleyra's destruction etc.
>>2771441 FF9 had a really bad habit of breaking up the party at every possible opportunity. Steiner at least got a catch-up scene where the mistodons gave him some good XP. The game needed more of those in it.
>>2771441 FF9 kicked random people out of the party at random times, kinda like FF4 did back in the day. It was a nice way to switch up strategies when doing combat and it kept you on your toes. I liked it, even if it meant that I didn't get to have my favorites around all the time.
>tfw you realize the mist is actually all that remains of all the souls captured and destroyed by Soul Cage >tfw you realize people are breathing in dead people all the time >tfw you realize air ships are powered by dead people >tfw you realize monsters, which more than likely also serve as food sources for settlements, are made out of dead people >tfw you realize that monsters apparently have destroyed most of the flora, fauna, and taken their niches in the ecosystem >tfw you realize that since mist is no longer being produced monsters are no longer being produced so the ecosystem is going to collapse soon and take all the people with it
>>2771441 I was probably the minority, but I really liked that seperation. It made sense for the most part, and it made you use practically all of the characters and later on you could choose your party anyway.
Would have been nice if she'd had SOME kind of storyline. For instance, she wants to search for surviving ratfolk. Fratley survived after all, and it's not like all of them were In Cleyra at the time it was destroyed.
Could have also dealt with her having some kind of survivor's guilt or PTSD or some shit, and coming to terms with that, learning to live on.
Also you'd think she might hold a grudge against Beatrix, but nope it's never really explored. Would have been cool if there had been some bit near the end where she directly confronted Beatrix and maybe even had a solo boss fight (that was winnable). But we couldn't have that because the writers had such a major hard-on for shitty-ass Beatrix.
As it is, she may as well have died along with the rest of her race. It's bad writing, plain and simple.
pretty bummed out they didn't capitalize on the teamwork mechanic. i remember just vivi being able to enchant steiner's sword. shit, we could have had double summons, zidane catching a ride on freya's jump attack for like a super steal, amarant throwing a dinner plate at the enemy causing quina to do a massive eat/tackle thing. would have all been fun stuff
