Phone Thread #119
Before asking for a wallpaper, reverse image search it. This function is built into 4chan now. Its not hard to do.

reposting, this is a little too clean, but I'm empty on ideas, suggestions for something I can do with the background without contrasting too much with the picture/edges?
Changed some stuff, I agree with what you guys said before about the colour etc. It did give it an unprofessional feel, just needed a second pair of eyes to say why exactly. What do you guys think of it now?
If you want a pastel red icon set
Maybe red or semi from this one
Honestly if it were my screen I would custom color the icons. Finding any pack I liked with the wall, extracting the apk and editing the png files in it.
I'm not sure what color exactly though. Thats something I would find out just trying various colors in photoshop.
If you need help getting an apk link to it here and as long as its a free icon set sometime today I (or anyone feeling nice enough) will upload it somewhere for you.
That blue looks better. Lower the folder icon, app drawer icons under the clock. They have a lot of room below so they don't need to crowd the clock. Line them up so the middle of those two lines up with the middle of the email icon. Maybe even move the date down a bit as well. Pic is line I'm picturing.
Rather small update from >>1759188
Changed calendar and signal icons. Sizes and colors are not final.
Icons - flight white minimalistic icons - can be found on blackmart
Toggles - power toggles widget
I placed the widget inside the dock.
I can really reccomend my current calendar - DigiCal+ - way more options with colors, backgrounds and other stuff. You can even mod your own font into it. Also can be found on blackmart
Previous calendar is Today calendar.
The rest is zooper.
Previous signal icons which are based on .ttf font format icons.
I modded the font by basically copy pasting from http://zavoloklom.github.io/material-design-iconic-font/icons.html#file
If anyone wants them then
Change name to whatever you want then put zip into iconset folder then select from scalable iconset template.
Nigga please. As if google play wasn't the worst botnet. Not that I care much.
getting started at ricing phones any suggestions?
Im thinking maybe a darker shade on the background would improve things
People here have some sort of autism towards app drawer icons for some unknown reason. A gesture or even an invisible icon or hotspot or whatever can be made to avoid having the icon showing.
i decided to change up a bit. opinions?
8/10. i like the colors. wish the characters were better res though.
6/10. get higher res wallpaper, the widget is eh, hide the nav bar, get a better icon pack, and dont save the screenshot as a jpg.
8/10. mostly because i dont like the color scheme, but the design is pretty good.
7/10. remove the status bar and nav bar.
coming from someone who believes less is more, the placement of the clock over kaga's hair is kinda irritating to me, as well as the bar it's in. I'd recommend moving the clock to the other side of the screen and getting rid of the bar entirely. 8/10
Dark Touhou wallpapers with thin white fonts seem to be a popular theme here. I'm not sure what to do with the app drawer. I thought about having a second screen with the same banner, but with a music widget and my app drawer, but I don't want to put anything in that I don't neccesarily need.
Very nice color coordination here, and I like that it's a banner without being blatantly a banner.
I think I would make better use of that rectangle there, there's a lot of empty space which could be used to un-crowd things just a bit. I like the wall a lot.
If your phone is black around the screen, black homescreens tend to look really nice in my experience
Source: HTC One M8 user
I think it'd look cool if you put the date vertically along the left side of the screen and put a simple clock in the top-right.
Try to do some color-matching here. When in doubt, stick with all white for widgets and icons. The bright blue in both really sticks out especially.
Cool idea, but I think you could get away with making your fonts a little bigger. Also, make your music widget white, and stick with one icon pack. The app drawer looks awkwardly different.
Super pretty! This is the kind of thing I'd be proud of. Is that a Deemo wallpaper?
It just doesn't neccesarily go with the wallpaper. Possibly you could take the app drawer from the white icon pack you used, make it red using any photo editing tool, and that would make it stand out against the other icons and the music widget (if you made the music widget white).
Any Widgets you guys recommend for HomeScreen?
I would make her smaller, so there is more negative space and a better balance visually. A higher quality of that wallpaper would help to. Its got a lot of blurred, jagged edges and artifacts all over.
As already hit on, a higher res of the characters will be better than a darker background color. Personally I like the current one. No guarantee it will look good but play with some of the blending options to add some effect to the characters if you are looking for something more visually.
Shrink her down a bit so her head clears the line under the clock or move the clock to the right side of the screen.
Get a color scheme going. Replace the blue in the clock with the lighter reddish purple from the wallpaper. The same goes for the icons. They really don't fit in with those colors (except the twitter app)
Same suggestions from last thread, use consistent fonts, make the app drawer match the rest, if you can brighten up the music widget controls.
very nice. I like the glow effect on the icons as well as the light text.
It looks good. If you aren't sure where to put it, make the app drawer a gesture or mask the icon with a transparent one. Its the only thing that looks out of place here.
It sure looks like one
Is that logo part of the wallpaper or is it added through the widget, or directly to the wallpaper image by you? The fuzzy outline on the logo next to the crisp text for the date, and clock, and especially the icons. The box around the date portion also looks odd. Its not totally visible all over so it feels forced and out of place.
ok, last try with this wallpaper. I had a rough time looking for a clock for this wallpaper, and a little bit positioning it. Added a few icons on the banner and I couldn't find a better place to put the clock. Opinions?
it may look pixilated here but it's not in person htcM8
Tell me whether or not you like the layout for this bg. I made it without much of a plan going in and this is where I ended up so I'm not too committed to it yet.
if you can do scrolling wallpaper, throw all your current icons into the stars like constellations and change your clock screen to the lock screen
and ditch your current blur lock thing you've got going on
inb4 too minimalist
the notification bar works even on lockscreen with just a swipe, showing date time, alarms, voicemail, messages, wifi, battery percentage, and antenna status
until I can root I do not intend to use zooper to display redundant information
been searching for hours
anyway to set separate LIVE wallpapers on lockscreen and novalauncher on cyanogen mod 11s
I think it has to be a third party lockscreen, but I can't find one that will do it ( besides hololocker that costs $3 for that function )
this is cute, I wish your icons were flat though
gif live wallpapers are my new favorite, hard to find big enough ones though (1080p)
Just changing some stuffs in a themer theme
I think I have a vector of the logo if you want to use that. It will most likely be much cleaner looking.
Nope, just recognize a character. I do have the deemo unit from the collaboration event that ran in brave frontier though
Those white icons don't look good to me. Using a pink (from her dress) I think would look better.
I also think its weird the wallpaper supposedly isn't pixilated when the icons and nav bar look just fine. A screen shot shouldn't do that an image.
I like it. Is the clock using the same yellow from the vespa?
Oddly its a lot sharper here. Why are you waiting to root before you make a widget or too?
Not that I'm aware of. Much like the hidden rice thing I messed with a while back you might be able to set up something with tasker.
I would shrink the image a bit and put all the icons onto one side. Then I would make a custom clock to set off in the white area as well so its not over the character.
Use an icon pack like tiny white, or stamped white rather than min(?) that doesn't have the drop shadow/beveled edge. Because there is little to no space between your clock's text use more contrasting colors, either darker shades of gray, or maybe even the blue from her hair.
That teal notification badge really looks out of place. Other than that its a pretty plain boring look. There isn't much here, practically a solid black wall.
So what exactly do you need recommended?
Too much going on for me.
Sorry, it's not anime, but WP thread in /WG/ is dead after 3 posts, and Android don't want WP there :( so if it's okay with you guys, rate :) next time it will be from an anime.
And as for now I am using 2nd, purple version.
Does anyone know what was used to get these networking icons? I have no idea how.
more importantly why does the event flow calendar widget look like ass and not have the settings icon hidden? "plebs" indeed
you're going to need root access to change notification bar icons bro
animated gif wallpapers are hard to capture with just a screenshot, it scrolls with the homescreen as well
here's sauce on the gif
have no idea, I think it's a tumblr reblog of a Japanese artists website
zooper pro can do shapes and fills based on percentages haven't got that deep into it yet but I know you can have it calculate signal strength and battery percentage
you're right about the icons
how's the dock for a quick fix?
it auto hides and is only a double tap away
I tried tinkering around with the zooper signal strength and stuff but I can't seem to get it to show the specific shape of the wifi and cellular signal. Rather, i don't even know which option to choose.
Also, here is my previously used 123123 times wallpaper and as I was corrected "work in progress" rice. All i need now are ways to display cellular and Wi-fi signal strength and I'm done. Anyone know how?
quickest solution I would try is zooper gallery and find a few widgets that display the info you want / with bars or circle graphs then edit the size & colors to your specs
I wouldn't worry too much about it,
if you're anything like me you'll change your whole UI/wallpaper soon anyways after you get bored of it
I stayed on my last rice for well over 2 years, albeit it was a simple, functional one that still used the notification bar because I still have the same problem. Don't know how to get cellular/wifi displayers.
Anyway, I'll try what you suggested. Thanks for tip
If I'm remembering correctly (and was following the conversation correctly) in the IRC the guy that posted that screen said it was a font that made the wifi and signal indicators in zooper as a widget.
Its still a pretty empty wall.
Its a widget, not the notification bar.
I think it looks better that way. As far as the keeping it or hiding it on a double tap thats up to you. Its not that bad just staying there.
I know its not much help and it all comes down to personal preference, but why do you need the wifi and signal on the home screen? Unless your notification bar is hidden on the lock screen you will see both before you use the phone, and even when hidden most of the time a simple swipe from the top of the screen will show it for a second or two. Its also present when most apps are open. Just curious.

You make a super valid point. I'll probably just ditch the signals and just chuck a power toggles up top.
7/10 I don't like it. It's very clean and polished, but like a lot of the screens you post, the theme doesn't make sense. Why would there be a shadow behind a portion of the night sky. Why would a portion of the sky be on the ground? In a phrase, it's just not natural.
5/10 No cohesive theme. Same color != good fit. You've got minimal flat icons but the clock isn't (notice the shadow) whilst the wall itself looks like a detailed hand-drawn sketch. The wall is pretty blurry as well.
6.5/10 Not bad. Get some flat icons like tiny white. I hate text widgets but I'll put that aside. Looks incredibly messy though. Probably get all the text aligned left or right. Keep the font sizes consistent across lines; using bolds/accent colors to distinguish important words looks better than differing font sizes.
5.5/10 There's nothing happening. Blue badge is really out of place. Very empty screen.
7/10 There's nothing particularly wrong with it but still I don't like it. Probably because it looks a bit too busy. idk
wg/10 It's not a good wg screen either. Take a look at nice WP screens like >>1759332 or >>1759482 and see if you're inspired to make something better.
5.5/10 At least you had the decency to try and do something (with the banner). Overall just looks really lazy and unpolished though, with the cut off wall, non-themed banner, lack of widgets etc etc. I'm not saying that these features always make something look bad, but in this case it does. Color is good, but you just need to work on everything more.
7/10 I like the tech theme you've got going on with the widget. Some of the space on the top/left could be used better but it's still a cool look. I don't think it really matches the wall and icons though. That particular image seems to lend itself more to minimalist/elegant styles, but if you can find a way to make your icons match the widget it might look less out of place.
>non-themed banner, lack of widgets etc etc. I'm not saying that these features always make something look bad, but in this case it does.
Can you elaborate here? What makes a "themed" banner, what kind of widgets are needed? If you go for minimalism wouldn't less widgets meet that look better? What if you don't have a use for the widgets anyway? Isn't that just a useless waste of space?
>7/10 I like the tech theme you've got going on with the widget. Some of the space on the top/left could be used better but it's still a cool look. Would it be better if I used a non "techy" font? I basically tried to recreate this
A themed banner would be one with visual elements which tie into the background image apart from just color. In your case it the banner is really generix; just a blue rectangle. If you were going for true minimalism you'd be more focused on getting the finer details perfect e.g. high res wall, better icon placement etc. If you really don't need any widget don't force it, but right now it looks pretty empty and a good clock would probably fill the space better and look nice. tbh I don't really think you're gling anywhere with that wall, I'd suggest finding a better, high res one and working around that.
For that wall: perhaps. But I actually really like that widget, it just doesn't go with the wall. I'd love to see that widget find a nice wall to suit it in the future.
That's fine too. I'm only judging and giving my thoughts here based on my own personal taste, so whatever floats your boat man. It just looks unnatural is what I'm saying.
All right >>1761193 here
The tl;dr way to put those icons in is to put the zip from http://a.pomf.se/ndxqnq.zip into iconsets folder (1) then select scalable icon set module (2) then select from iconset (3) then select iconset mode. pic rel
There are 3 known ways for me to visually display signals in zooper. All use the same calculation method.
First are scalable icon sets which are based on fonts. They are in the iconsets folder inside a .zip where there is only the font .otf or .ttf format plus a configured XML file that sets it. I have no idea how the XML works. They use #NWSIG# and #NCSIG# values and conditions
#NWSIG# - scales wifi signal strength from a 0-9 scale
#NCSIG# - scales cellular signal signal in ASU from 0-31
#NCSIGN# - cellular signal in dBm. I have no idea how to calculate strenght from that but apparently ASU already does that.
So basically the xml tells zooper to check the signal and based on it's value - if it's greater than a defined number on that scale, it will display an different icon.
anyways first way is to use fonts which are way more clean due to being vector graphics so you can change size and color.
second way is to use bitmap icons which cant be changed all that much. Plenty of those are on XDA.
Third way was used by myself until recently. It's by using a progress bar module. Where you set the current value of the bar with #NCSIG# and the min max value of 0-31 and #NWSIG# with 0-9 min max value.
Just put a rectangle around the bar and its ready.
altough i removed it because it was a bit too clutttery way to display singal.
It's plebs because I put the wall first on /g/ :^)
Eventflow is toggable but not that much customizable so blame digiCal+ for that eventflow and settings button. I don't think you can suggest a better widget than theirs though.
Personally I have no problem with it.
Thanks for that explanation, I shall try one of the methods.
Also, I tried using a different wall with my clock, but its also the wall I use on my lock screen. How does it look? Still deciding on an icon pack and placement. Any suggestions as welcome. Might as well have 2 rices to switch back and forth with.
I know it's a little bit off. Guess that means I need to crop a bit of the bottom of the wallpaper then because the icons are in a dock and cant really much change their position
I like having the signal icons on the homescreen as I feel it's integral to it being a phone. Every phone I had in my life showed it so it's like an obligation. It's just that I don't like kitkats status bar on the homescren and I can't really remove the dark shadow thing. Plus I like to have it crammed when I'm in apps.
the wallpaper scrolls & has parallax effect anon
until I can root I don't intend to use widgets to display redundant information, notifications are only a swipe away even on the lock screen
used to have a looping gif of a disney mermaid talking, with each swipe zooper would fade in and out with relevant system information RPG style
lately, I've been focusing on walls that encourage the use of auto brightness & minimalism to avoid taxing the battery which now lasts nearly two full days
thanks for the input anon
Not sure I'm in love with the icons but haven't managed to find better ones. Could also use the green section for something but I'm a little afraid the screen might already be too cluttered. Any help appreciated.
Overall it looks nice, I'm not sure if its due to the image begin saved as a jpg or not but you have some major color banding in that wallpaper.
Those icons don't look to me. Too big, and white is a bad color, mainly for the left half. If you custom colored the glyphs icon pack like >>1761428 did you might be able to get away with putting your icons in that extra space you have by the clock.
>icons are in a dock and cant really much change their position
How do they look if you hide the dock and just place them on the homescreen? From what I've seen docked icons sit much lower than the rest of the grid and it will let you play with the rows for a better fit. Cropping or a slight edit will be the easiest in the long run though.
The dark blue from her skirt.
I would use an icon set like tiny white that doesn't have that green/gray background. I also think the widget text is too close to the red/brown used for each rectangle. Again here I would use either white, or a darker red, and lighter brown.
>A themed banner would be one with visual elements which tie into the background image apart from just color
Do you have an example of this? Every banner I've seen is just some colors from the wallpaper, or that complement the wallpaper. Exactly what this guy has. Also its not my screen, so I'm not the one asking about or going for "true minimalism" as you are calling it. What would be a better icon placement for this image? I'm just a guy trying to learn a few things before I attempt a first rice.
Almost 1 year ago I posted this same rice. Still using the same layout. Nice to see the phone threads are still going strong.
I really love your rice so I actually looked up colors that would go well with it so here goes.
If you're gonna keep the text in the circle white, #242b8b and #3d45a1 work pretty well.
If you want to make the text dark or black, then #7e84cf (this one works pretty nicely with light text as well), #aeb2e7, #ffd667, #e9bc41, and #c89a1c are really good.
Also I've been looking all over for your wallpaper but I can find it so could you post it please?
>Also I've been looking all over for your wallpaper but I can find it so could you post it please?
Because he made it himself. The render he used is easily found reverse image searching and just as easy to slap onto a purple background.
Reposting from last thread. I gave Shimakaze a bit of a shadow to give the wallpaper some more life. I'm still new to this so I'm not really sure where to go from here. I was thinking of removing the clock and replacing it with a text clock and maybe going with a sort of nautical theme all around? I haven't rooted my phone yet so I just want to do anything I can with my launcher. Any ideas suggestions and criticisms are welcome.
>Those icons don't look to me. Too big, and white is a bad color, mainly for the left half. If you custom colored the glyphs icon pack like >>1761428 did you might be able to get away with putting your icons in that extra space you have by the clock.
But if I did that wouldnt the bottom be completely empty
>Quick and dirty banner tutorial
>My phone setup
Are my banners really that bad?
Shimakaze anon here. I just got zooper free. I saw that there's a way for the widget to say 'discharging' when it's disconnected from the charger. Is there a way to change 'discharging' to 'time to refuel'?
>Banners are just that easy to make. MS paint !=bad
Fair enough. Typically when I think of MSPaint I think of the same crap that MS shipped between 95 and Vista, but the one they include in 7 and 8(.1) is much better. I personally use GIMP to do mine though, that way I at least can get the spacing correct.
I would line up the bear guy's crown with the tip of your widget, and move the battery, data and WiFi icons into a horizontal line between the widget and bear. I know that that particular widget doesn't allow you to change the color in zooper, but try editing the color of the icons in a photo editor to be a similar dark grey.
I believe there are a lot of HTC One M8 users here, so, before I update, I want to know if there are any big issues with it. I've heard both positive and negative effects on battery life.
>But, but, that transparent navbar!
You posted the same screenshot from last year as well. The fact you kept that for a year is kind of impressive.
In addition to what was already suggested I would make the red bar thinner as well. If that dark red doesn't look good, try the same dark blue from the clock widget you have now.
Like >>1761665 said, its not always a bad thing. That wallpaper is bottom heavy to begin with so unless you want to work with that intense red along the bottom placing stuff up top will work out better.
Did a whole bunch change with the newer ms paint? All I really noticed was the general UI gaining that ribbon thing that ms office got.
I would make the battery, wifi, and signal icons smaller. They look huge next to the app icons.
I used to have a lot of issues with Paint on XP, things like HORRIBLE artifacting on JPEG images, not saving PNGs with the proper color data, and IMO the tools and UI were dated. Never had any file quality related issues the few times I have used the newer paint, and the ribbon UI is a nice change.
Decided I didn't like how the banner thing covered the vespa and moved things. Might change up the lock screen a bit but probably won't change much else.
I went ahead and did it. I'm happy so far. No more ugly grey navbar, it's worth it just for that.
(I'm sorry I swear I'll do something with the app drawer asdghkm)
In nova pro, you can set these gestures to open up app drawer, I have mine on double tap.
I'm only not using one and it's because it's not a comfortable way for my hand to move without thinking about it.
Unrelated, what browsers does /w/ use?
New setup for my phone. Wish the Android L navigation buttons could be edited.
I bet they can be if you are rooted and can access the system files. See if rom toolbox has any edits for them. If you are really desperate roll your own rom that only changed the color.
>Unrelated, what browsers does /w/ use?
>inb4 browser war
I use Firefox, personally.
Aside from your comment (don't know shit about rooting to be honest) this looks good, even though a lot of it is negative space. I'd make sure that the clock doesn't overlap her leg, though.
What >>1761755 said I partially agree with. Otherwise, properly align it with the other icons. The triangle is interesting. 8/10
Not bad. Battery is interesting. 9.5/10, even the font is nice. The banner just looks sorta jarring, but if that's what you're going for, then 10/10.
0/10, read the guide. Don't use a fucking trace/copy of a drawing you could most probably get in higher res/quality, to boot. You can do more with iOS than this.
>Don't use a fucking trace/copy of a drawing you could most probably get in higher res/quality, to boot.
It's part of a drawing my gf made for me that's why I like using it but thanks for the friendly feedback.
Sorry, didn't mean to indirectly insult your gf but it just didn't make sense. If you have a higher res of that drawing then you should use it so it doesn't get cropped the way it is in your screencap. Otherwise, it looks pretty unintentional and bad, to be frank.
I get that you'd want to use something your gf made for you, but it could have been used better.
8/10 This is really nice. Try and get the circle aligned properly with equal margins. If you can, probably try to make it bigger as well so more hair covers it thus making the layering more obvious. I'm not sure if you've got an inner shadow in the circle right now, but if you do, you could probably make it more obvious. If you don't, including one should look very nice. Looking forward to seeing this with the adjustments.
7/10 Floor plan wall is interesting. Borderless, black, translucent icons to match the widgets would be better. For the green room I'd say just split the four icons in the yellow room between the two i.e. 2 each. The lack of font size consistency between the widgets really irks me though, try and do something about it.
5.5/10 The shadow is an improvement but I still don't like the disjointed layout. No real idea on how to work with this so good luck dude.
8/10 Thank god you god rid of the random sky on the bottom LOL. Still not a fan of the random shadow but whatever. Icon placement is okay, but the lockscreen got worse. I really liked the blurring effect you've always used. Layout isn't too great either, especially the slider. Maybe rotate the battery to be horizontal and slide it in between the date and day of week. Then put the slider in the middle below it all for a stepped look. And pls bring back the blur.
8.5/10 Very clean. I think a thin, sans-serif font would look better than the digital one you've got here though. To get that elegant look going. As for the app drawer problem why not make an invisible hotspot?
7.5/10 Triangle is interesting. Battery % looks out of place with the icons, would probably fit better in the triangle. Same thing with the WhatsApp badge, numbers look out of place. Date should probably go higher and closer to the time, the ends of it get too close to edges of the triangle. Overall its quite clean and polished though, which is more than I can say for a lot of the screens posted here. Hope you don't mind the nitpicking, I just want to see it the best it can be.
7/10 It's nice how you kept that portion of the background. The girl is cut off really awkwardly though, you need to show more of her! Clock placement is terrible; its touching her leg. Clock itself isn't much good either so try making something yourself.
5.5/10 At least use a scan dude. No real theme here and looking really empty. I'd recommend showing more of the drawing (scanned!) and with rounded corners. I don't think this is going anywhere great though.
9/10 I really like this. Only gripe with this is how the shortcut images don't match. Maybe having them all drawn by the same artist? But I understand that that's hard and overall it still looks great, especially the lock screen. Good job.
If you notice on the image there's actually a lot of free space on the left side so I'd probably put the icons down there.
If you want to learn I think it'd be useful to show you some good examples (pic related). Commentary below.
1. Themed banner. It's a simple no frills banner, but by taking the texture from the image to fill it looks amazingly natural. Font choice is questionable (I would have preferred a solid one) but it's a great banner example.
2. Another banner. Notice the layered effect with the girl covering the banner. Most of the time this looks great and it was used in the previous screen as well. Colors match up well, clock placement makes use of the space and the circular battery to fit in with the icons is a nice touch.
3. Minimal banner. Taking shades of green from the image and putting it on a nice bordered banner. Just putting on a plain, rectangular banner often looks pretty lazy, but something simple like a border improves it greatly.
4. Character-centric, minimalist banners. Colors taken from the girl look great. Notice the use of layering here; it's very good. Banners are consistent and span across all three pages. Left is a bit too full and font consistency would be nice but overall it's still a great rice.
5. Wall-centric minimalism. Pixel theme from the wall well executed over the icons and widget. Usually minimalist styles tend to shy away from widgets to avoid clutter like you said, but sometimes the wall has too much empty space like here, so the clock widget is used to fill the space nicely. It's also more functional to at least know the time and battery status.
6. Wall-centric minimalism. Unlike the previous one, the theme isn't pulled from the wall. Instead, a simple widget is overlayed to keep the wall visible. An interesting shape is used here, and it fills the empty space well.
tl;dr try to get a theme going when ricing to make everything look natural. If using a banner add a border or something to keep it interesting.
Thanks, I'm trying to improve it, which wont be hard.
I know it can be used better, I'm not saying the contrary, but since you're more experience with this stuff, I appreciate a lot proper feedback like this one.
I will scan it and see how it looks, thanks for the tip, I didn't think about it.
How does this look? It's still not a scan, I'll do it later.
this is way better than before anon
most of those are good, bottom left is terrible htc sense shenanigans though
is this zooper lockscreen? I like it
what font anon?
I love this now, nice icon placement
I like the clock and calendar
add system info, temp, processor ram, cpu speed ect
I wish the icons were different but the top looks nice
anyone familiar with zooper exceptions logic?
I've managed to get my alarms line to disappear when no alarms are active, but I'd like a count down or to atleast get rid of "FRI"
everything I've tried so far breaks it though
How are any of those banners excluding the top left with a little noise added any different than the blue one added to the Misty rice? Why does a "themed" banner have to pull colors from the wallpaper's image and not just use complementary/contrasting colors?
Nice improvement. The sky still has a lot of color banding though. It really shows on the lockscreen.
Or cover it up with a blank png image.
Holy shit thats an old guide. It needs updated to match the new uccw UI. Everything in it is still correct, just not in the same places.
That widget is a move in the wrong direction. Your wallpaper has soft colors and outlines so that bold sharp font and color doesn't fit it. its also just too much stuff at one time.
Zooper, UCCW, maybe even Minimalistic Text. You just have to build it.
1. They're solid. Which for the most part looks better than translucent like on the Misty one.
2. They're not just a single flat color. Accent colors are used on borders.
3. They go all the ways to the end and look like actual banners. The Misty one just looks like a blue rectangle slapped on.
4. The layering effect (1, 2, 4) which makes it a lot more interesting and look a lot less lazy.
Colors are usually pulled from the image because it's easier to do that then find complementary/contrasting colors which still look good and natural on the wall. Not to say it's impossible, but most of the time it's just harder so I'd recommend pulling colors to avoid bad combinations. If you really want to you can go ahead with different colors but the chance of failure and frustration is much higher.
>They're solid. Which for the most part looks better than translucent
Depends on the rice. It has a soft art style as noted >>1761912 so a bold solid banner would be out of place. She also uses water pokemon so the transparent blue looks more like water.
>They're not just a single flat color. Accent colors are used on borders.
You can hardly see the accent color on number 2, and the rest are a solid 2 color setup. Visually its not a giant leap.
>They go all the ways to the end and look like actual banners
What if you want the "icon dock" look not the banner look? Why does everything with an icon background get pigeonholed into the banner look?
>The layering effect (1, 2, 4) which makes it a lot more interesting and look a lot less lazy.
The transparency effect does the same thing. Both ways are just as easy and they both look like a lazy cop out.
>Colors are usually pulled from the image because it's easier to do that then find complementary/contrasting colors
Color theory isn't that hard, and there are plenty of websites that find them for you if you suck at it. His wallpaper also has blue on it anyway so what color are you expecting him to use? The orange from her hair?
I'm not trying to fight or argue this. I'm just looking to better understand the lines between a good and bad rice.
>I know it can be used better, I'm not saying the contrary, but since you're more experience with this stuff, I appreciate a lot proper feedback like this one.
Sorry. My assumption was you were either deliberately trolling or hadn't so much as read the guides. Looks better than before though.
Thanks! Yeah, I couldn't find anything even vaguely remoted to all of these drawn by the same artist, and considered using photography or something instead. I'll keep hunting. Much appreciated!
Custom one I made. Thank you
Yeah, Zooper + Widgetlocker. Thanks!
Timma pointed out just about every comment I had to make. I'd suggest also getting/making a different lockscreen slider. It's cool in a way, the widget, but it also just makes zero sense with this wall.
>I'll wake you
That's kinda cute.
>I'm just looking to better understand the lines between a good and bad rice.
To be honest I can't really put it into words. All the points you make are completely valid, and by your logic that particular rice /should/ be as good as the examples I showed, but to my eyes it is nowhere near as nice. I don't judge rices by a certain criteria of whats bad or good, but rather look at it as a whole and try and justify why I think something looks a certain way afterwards. In the end this is all very subjective so perhaps what looks like shit to me is perfect to another person. "One man's trash is another man's treasure"
If you really do want to understand the difference between nasty and nice better, experience is the way to go. Lurk threads to see what people like and don't like, then try and make something that you think is nice based on that. From there people can give you valuable feedback on whats good or not which will help you in future rices and your overall understanding.
Another thing I just noticed is that the images aren't the same size on left vs right i.e. Firefox & messaging are smaller than twitter, pandora and love live. You should probably fix that up. For the matching images I think it would look fine even if they didn't have anything to do with the shortcut. Whatever you decide to do, good luck with your image hunt dude.
Here's my first time rice, what do you think about it?
First rice. Don't know what happened with the screenshots though, they are blurry as all fuck. Looks much less distorted on my phone.
wallpaper has parallax effect & scrolls with homescreen
I'll probably change walls once I get bored,
I figured out how to add fonts so the floodgates are open
as far as rice goes:
its all relevant information to me as I drive with my phone on my dash in a case, I'm a lyft/uber driver in southern California so location info +phone temp is a big deal.. no phone =no work (I've lost customers because my phone overheated in the sun before)
Why put it on the dash? surely there is a place on the middle console that is a just as accessible but in a location that doesn't get as hot. Turning the notification sound up would help as well so you don't have to physically see the phone screen to know something needs your attention. With how small that font is along with the style on the text it can't be easy to read from the driver's seat anyway.
>its all relevant information to me as I drive
You need to know the cpu clock speed, ram, wifi access and uptime at all times for your job?
I understand needing some of that for work, but there is an attractive way to include it. Your missing that and getting defensive when people tell you it looks bad.
Did you use scrotter to take the screenshots?
Also location = Mississauga, Mah nigga
9/10 really nice, also is the progress bar for battery?
I kept the same theme that I've been using for a while just changed the wall. I want to make a new theme but don't know what to put into it.
not getting defensive anon
just trying to make this particular rice work,
I've posted setups that people actually like before so hopefully that rules out attention seeking shenanigans
what I would LOVE is to be able to edit my notification bar and have it show wifi/cpu strength but I'm pretty sure without root I'm out of luck....
I do need cpu/ram since switching to Verizon, all their droid models are bogged down by unnecessary bloat..
so it's an indicator of how much BS is running in the background
I've moved everything to the lock screen since the homescreen is completely minimal and empty
any help with fonts will be greatly appreciated as dafont website has literally thousands to troll through
>what I would LOVE is to be able to edit my notification bar and have it show wifi/cpu strength but I'm pretty sure without root I'm out of luck....
They should show this on their own. If you want the exact values check the settings some times its there. its almost a standard feature for custom roms and if you are rooted it is something gravity box can add.
>I do need cpu/ram since switching to Verizon, all their droid models are bogged down by unnecessary bloat..
so it's an indicator of how much BS is running in the background
And that matters how? If you are driving around for work you don't need all the memory your phone has or its cpu power. When you use the phone the os will kill tasks as needed to free up resources.
>any help with fonts will be greatly appreciated as dafont website has literally thousands to troll through
I stand by droid sans. Its the best.
I don't think zooper supports Spotify still
and the default widget it comes with is an abomination unfortunately
no sunshine root for verizon yet that I know of, believe me I've looked for ways to remove the "features" I don't need
it may sound nitpicky but I had the att unlocked variant of this same model and it could handle far more cpu load
I used to have custom widgets that connected across 5 home screen pages like a cohesive superOS
i dont expect my cellphone to be a supercomputer or anything but there IS noticeable lag and the OS fucks up after more than a few days of uptime
thanks for the criticism it keeps pushing things in the right direction
How do you read that font on your dashboard? I can barely make it out from my desk. like anon said droid sans is your friend. While you may see a bit of lag that ram and cpu counter are still quite pointless. Do you keep the task manager of your pc up at all times?
Shameless rice I stole from somebody else. Tell me how I can make it better. Not sure what to do with this clock and stuff
I like the clock anon
maybe consider placing your icons vertically on the left side
how does everyone feel about widgets that take up the entire screen? kind of liking it with the "cube" scroll transitions in Nova launcher
(you can still see the wallpaper behind the current day as you flip pages)
reposting, i want to make some new icons but dont really know how. Any other ideas or suggestions? Also pls r8
cant really say i like it, idk just feels boring 7/10
I like the clock and wallpaper, but icons and bar dont fit where they are 7/10
shitfont and low res wallpaper. 5/10
why does everyone use those bars? timmaclone/10
not bad at all for a first rice. the grey kinda bothers me tho 8/10
I've liked it since the first post, but if the icons color played off the wall itd be better 9/10
if the widgets didnt cover the wallpaper id give it a 9/10 but they do so 7/10 get a new clock too
i like the icons , other than that not much. That bat bar is really out of place. 6/10
that Drrr! layout is 10/10
cant really say i like it much. I'm partial to icons really. 5/10
a lot of unused space but looks nice 8/10
i like it a lot, dont show the battery percent tho 9/10
i'd like it more if it had icons and not just the drawer 7/10
10/10 from me anon, although i think itd look better if mugis hair went over the banner
turn that grey into blue or some other color from the wall, other than that 8/10
how have you kept the same rice for a year ? i get bored of mine in like a month or so 6/10 tho icons dont really match
needs new icons m8
2/10 try again
Not a bad first time but as with every screen there are improvements that can be made. The red is a bit dark for the weather, and next to the other screens stands out a bit too much because the rest are all white.
Its not much of a change but it does make a big difference.
the gray and white is a bit odd with the blue to pink gradient. Making the image either solid white or a gray scale image might look better.
The widget on the top left screen isn't centered the best, it sits really close to the top vs the bottom of the dark gray section. The purple only being on the far right widget looks odd. If you can bring that purple out to the other screens as an accent it will look better. I like that Asuka image, nice sharp lines, it gives a clean look.
As flattered as I want to be you really should credit scope with that look not me.
If only I could blame moot for my deleted screenshot.
This looked better in my head but I still kinda like the result.
I meant to use media utilities to send the info and use zooper "TMU_ALBUM" thing in a widget. But if thats what you meant by it doesn't support it then my bad I didn't know.
I actually just noticed the widget not being centered and I'm going to change this right now. I might try to incorporate the pink into the other screens as well. Also to me it look pink but then again it could just be the picture that might make it seem purple. Also Thanks
Still really clean and the white seems to make her stand out a bit more. Also what music player are you using and what is the progress bar for?
6/10 Feels like 12-year-old: the phone. I know its the Dai Gurren Dan logo and it was a good show, but flaming skull + gradient + black background gives a strong amatuer feel. If you do insist on using this style though, here are some suggestions for improvement: Lower logo so the widgets don't touch it. Make the weather widget white to match the other widgets. Use the thin version of whatever font you're using across all the widgets. 69/126 really isn't needed on the music widget. Get rid of the gradient on the logo. Probably get rid of the banner as well, there's nothing there for the icons to need to be differentiated from.
8.5/10 Looks very nice. Something about the clock widget bothers me though, probably about the spacing. Don't exactly know what to do to fix it though. Still looks good as is though.
7/10 Inconsistent fonts are the bane of my existence. C'mon son, get that fixed up. Apart from that it's not too bad; clock could be a bit bigger, system info a bit smaller, but that's about it. Not much to be said about a Scope clone. Music widget is nice though.
6/10 I liked the other one much more. And I can't really look past it because all I see is a cheap knockoff. Nothing is really working here, not the clock, not the battery, not the icons. I want to help but I just like the original too much. Sorry anon.
I was thinking something like pic related. Left is what I originally thought of and right is what I came up with after some tweaking. It's just a suggestion, but I think the second one I came up with was quite nice.
4/10 That wall is terrible. The layout isn't much better either. That particular premade calendar almost never looks good on anything. Icons are really lazy and the clock is just there. I'd suggest starting over, or at least getting a new wall because that really is the worst part.
I can tell that you tried to get a consistent theme going but it really falls flat here. Status bar is way out of place, as is the dock divider. Battery and clock are tiny and just sort of there, making the whole thing very empty, especially with the black background. I'd suggest getting a proper wall at least with a character/landscape/proper subject matter which fills at least half the screen. And get rid of the status bar.
6/10 Icon placement is lazy and the music player is just kinda there. I hate text widgets but if you insist on using them I think it would looks better without the banner up top, with the music player and icons down the bottom on a banner.
7.5/10 Better. Get rid of the album art on the music player for full white only theme. "from" and "by" are really useless as well. And shift those two lines up so there isn't a huge gap between them and the track title. Icons would probably look better a bit lower and closer to the line. As an overall suggestion more continuity in the layout across the two screens would be nice as there isn't much tying them together right now apart from the color.
meh. looking for more wallpaper options i'm most likely done i just need to find a new status bar.
asdfghjkl it looked so much better with the other wall :c The layering on that one was golden... Circle looks pretty bad on this one now that it's covering her face. Putting it in the center (about her stomach area) should look better.
And I forget the picture like a fucking retard.
I didn't have anything else to say that wasn't said and left untouched from last time it was posted. Your clock and icons are to sharp and bold next to the soft edges of the wallpaper and banner.
The white does look better, its a nice improvement. I like this screen.
>it look pink but then again it could just be the picture
If you open it up in photoshop and use the eye drop tool to sample the color it sits right on the border of a light pastel purple and a bright dark shade of pink. It could be called either color.
If you are changing walls you are going to need a new clock. Unless you stick with the anime render over a solid color look so you can always clear the widget.
That wallpaper is really pretty, dem thighs, dem autumn trees. If you can move that clock up off her face it would be perfection for ios in my book.
>does this still work even with lockscreen stuff layered over it?
Most of the time it will. A lot the screens here are done up pretty minimal as well so the whole 3 icons on screen will do nothing for image searching.
Ah, thanks! I hadn't noticed, I'll go redo it. And thank you again, still searching but hopefully will figure it out.
I see what you mean. In the end, if it works for you then that's kind of the most important thing, but there are probably better ways visually to incorporate that info into your rice.
Not bad; especially liking the third page. Would use a darker grey though that's just my preference.
IIRC it was posted in one of these threads ages ago. Might also be in the Vector thread. Either way, I happen to have it, so here you go.
PPretty nice as well, would just make sure Asuka's left foot doesn't come so close to the bottom bar.
Nice job on the edges of the banner, but center the icons properly in them. 7 or 8/10.
>cant really say i like it much. I'm partial to icons really. 5/10
Not bad but very plain.
Tilted banner for sure. Maybe a little less though, say between 3 and 5 degrees. Also fix up that pixellated screenshot.
I disagree. I think that would put too much emphasis on the banner. The grey right now is subtle and perfect. If any color change were to be made, taking the lighter gray from her bag would be the best choice.
Nah I liked the titled one way better. Somehow the frosted glass look isn't as good a fit to my eyes. Date is also kinda hard to see now as well. It's your phone so what you think is all that matters but I really liked the tilted banner version a lot more.
Stealing a nice quote from an anon earlier in the thread
>"One man's trash is another man's treasure"
Ultimately all that matters is whether or not you like what you've done or not. It doesn't matter if other people say its shit, because you're the one using it, not them. If you think they have a fair point though, then you should do something about it rather than trying to make silly justifications. [/rant]
Just my two cents.
I see what you mean, my homescreen doesn't translate well into a screenshot
but the whole point of Android is customizable shenanigans +intuitive interface
my phone is pretty cute in person & I'm happy with it
most of the criticism has helped me push it even further in the right direction
Well this awkward hahaha. That rice didn't even belong to me, it was my suggestion to the original anon.
But it isn't. Shadow+tilt+clean+polished looks great. Sad to see it go but who am I to say anything...
>my phone is pretty cute in person & I'm happy with it
And that's all that matters. I still wouldn't say that the clusterfuck widget was a step in the "right direction" but if you still like it no matter what then whatever.
it only feels crowded with the alarms set
my lockscreen feels ten times better now thanks to this thread
it used to be blank, then it was hideous, now it only shows information I need/want
What's a hoot and how do I give it?
I'm a noob with a Galaxy S5. Which ROM should I get?
/g/ greentexts the fuck out of CM, and my buddy Google tells me custom ROMs shit on S5 picture quality. Does anyone know if this is true?
Its not bad, but the solid black is very boring. Play with adding some color to it.
You should go back to that old pink. The neon thing you have now isn't a good fit.
The blurred background could look good, but in this particular case its not as good.
>can gimp do this?
Look for an 'eye dropper' icon. Or just press the 'o' key.
>it doesn't look blurred in person anon ;_;
Pulled up on my laptop or phone that wallpaper looks fuzzy. Its not as bad on the phone, but using a solid black font color just makes it look that much blurrier.
Stock AOSP at the moment. I've messed with holo locker and widget locker. I'm checking out Echo right now.
IMO its not the alarms that is making it look cluttered. Its the amount of other things that others have pointed out as useless like the cpu and ram. If you are going to make the battery bar blue use the same blue as your clock. Its dark enough to read on a white background. Rather than a solid black font pull the color her outline uses in the darker parts. Starting with this one (#9f929b) just play around with darker/lighter values till you can read it. The font also makes it look cluttered because its not a clean font. Using a sans serif font will help clean that up. Droid sans as suggested is a great font.
Looks good. I would use a solid font to go with the icons and character image but that's just me.
Both tasker and the app fivewallpapers could set a wallpaper rotation for the emotion thing.
You might because the stock Samsung camera app is made for that specific camera hardware. In jumping from stock to custom roms with my s3 I didn't notice enough of quality loss to make it really matter. If you want I can upload a picture I took and you can judge the quality yourself. As for roms why do you want to switch? What do you want to get out of it?
Any suggestions for icon packs to work with this wallpaper/color scheme?
I just ended up recoloring some. quality is bad, but it looks okay on phone. Any suggestions?
Is this going in the right direction?
That dark pink on purple with light blue is not good. Use the light blue of her hair, and the dark blue of her stockings. Get rid of all the pink lines and light pink shapes all over the place.
Okay I think I made it better. Put the icons on the side, and the only place I could put the progress bar was in the clock. Anything else I should fix or do? I'm not sure about the icons on the left.
ok fuck i just found a sick wallpaper this is the final version i swear
Trying it with a different style (And a pattern, which I think looks really nice).
Nice clock iPhonebro.
Might try it sometime.
The curved text + at an angle looks off.
Try some different color combos for all of the banners and make them varying thicknesses.
Get a better wall.
The tilted one looks better.
Actually not sarcastic. Considering the image itself it fits it.
Nice. Would consider a different font. 10/10 otherwise
Clean, but also somewhat plain. Looks good, though.
>that inner shadow
I just can't get into it on the vectored girls, but whatever. Looks pretty nice on the banners. Would definitely get a different font.
I think you should read the guide, newfriend.
hide the notification bar, use less columns on the home screen, that's why some icons are getting cut on the sides. Theme the app drawer icon as well, just long press on it to manually theme it. Mask that google folder with one icon to represent whats in it. That stacked look is bad. Hide the icon labels, an icon shouldn't need text to tell what it is. Hide the dock divider and page indicator.
It looks like holler black, which I believe was removed from the play store. You can still find the apk online though, I believe through the developer on xda.
I would remove the line above the dock
btw i don't even know why i have that image on the rigth screen i just like it
it might be out of place but meh
Due to "popular" choice, tilted banner is to stay. I figured the frosty style can wait another day
That red and icon shadows doesn't work, use the red color around her glow. Feels crowded at the top
Really digging the stripes. I think another icon pack might be needed. Or you can leave it the way it is. Don't really think you can do better with the colors.
I actually like the tilted/curved widget though the character is too high in contrast to the widget. Either move her down or use horizontal alligned widget.
Shadow/tint on BG + really light clock banner. Doesn't work, choose one
Move clock to top-right
No more cirno?
Nothing much to say, everything fits. The texture on the gray BG keeps it from being boring.
Best to go center alligned widget for your wallpaper (Random 74 battery widget?). That app drawer icon either has to go or match with the cryten pack. nono to stock folders.
Full tranparency on the poweramp widget. If you can just use a solid blue on PG.2 so you can stick that random pic there better
>No more cirno?
Nope. I don't plan on using that vector either. I just has the idea and wanted to make a wall of it before I forgot. I'm currently looking for a vector better suited for it.
First try. I'm not sure if I want to stick with this wallpaper. Just wanted to try a banner. Suggestions ??
