What the fuck is CERN trying to do with its particle collider exactly?
Between the 666 logo and the statue of "Shiva the Destroyer" sitting out front, I'm pretty sure it's nothing good, but does anyone have any theories?
CERN's main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research – as a result, numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN as a result of international collaborations.
CERN is also the place the World Wide Web was first implemented. The main site at Meyrin has a large computer facility containing powerful data processing facilities, primarily for experimental-data analysis; because of the need to make these facilities available to researchers elsewhere, it has historically been a major wide area networking hub.
Several important achievements in particle physics have been made through experiments at CERN. They include:
1973: The discovery of neutral currents in the Gargamelle bubble chamber;
1983: The discovery of W and Z bosons in the UA1 and UA2 experiments;
1989: The determination of the number of light neutrino families at the Large Electron–Positron Collider (LEP) operating on the Z boson peak;
1995: The first creation of antihydrogen atoms in the PS210 experiment;
1999: The discovery of direct CP violation in the NA48 experiment;
2010: The isolation of 38 atoms of antihydrogen;
2011: Maintaining antihydrogen for over 15 minutes;
2012: A boson with mass around 125 GeV/c2 consistent with long-sought Higgs boson
In particle physics, antimatter is material composed of antiparticles; which have the same mass as particles of ordinary matter but have opposite charge and other particle properties such as lepton and baryon number, quantum spin, etc. Collisions between particles and antiparticles lead to the annihilation of both, giving rise to variable proportions of intense photons (gamma rays), neutrinos, and less massive particle–antiparticle pairs
I'm more interested in the computer we tried to build in Texas. Bill Clinton shut it down during his office but what are they using those tunnels for now? I've heard rumors that some pharmaceutical company owns them now and who knows what michief is going on there.
you mean the super collider, and the few tunnels that got dug out are being used for a mushroom farm.
>1999: The discovery of direct CP violation in the NA48 experiment;
>The discovery of direct CP
Why would you ask /x/? Google cern you lazy shit
They're conducting experimental physics in order to prove or disprove some major theoretical physics. Basically unify the standard models.
Hopefully we'll learn enough to develop some awesome new technology, much like the tech that came as a result of the space race :^)
This thread is not for /x/
>just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean it's paranormal/conspiracy/muh demons
We've already created and collected antimatter.
I just don't get people like you. Are you aware we've done this and are just lying because you're bored and acting stupid is how you get through that? Are you ignorant of this well known fact and too goddamned lazy to bother learning, but also too stupid to not try and claim others are ignorant?
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you? I don't get why you wouldn't put some effort into a: knowing what the fuck you're talking about and b: wanting to be constructively honest. What motivates someone like you to act like a goddamned idiot ?
>>just because you don't understand something, doesn't mean it's paranormal/conspiracy/muh demons
Then let's make it so!
*puts on tin foil*
CERN IS SECRETLY BEING USED TO OPEN THE PORTAL FREEING THE ANTI-CHRIST OUR NWO WORLD LEADER WHO WILL PRETEND TO BE fuck off
THIS IS WHY CERN IS CALLING THIS YEAR "THE YEAR OF LIGHT" AND AND fuck off
They are trying to make a dildo big enough and fast enough to penetrate your mums giant vagina
AND YOU'RE WRONG.
What the goddamned absolute total fuck do you think a SYNTHETIC PROCESS IS you useless goddamned ass cluster?!
Point stands, why are you so gung fucking ho to parade yourself around as a goddamned CLOWN?
>being pedantic makes me smart!
in this context "creating" is like "creating a meal" source material is implied.
And it's not like that at all. The antimatter isn't preexisting, it's the result of an artificial process. Human elements and technology make this process happen, antimatter is created as a result, then collected. It's purely artificial manufacturing. The antimatter isn't already there.
Seriously, someone needs to slap the living shit out of you.
In what reality could violence be justified here? That's insane. Why should I listen to a volatile nutcase who read a few lines in a Wikipedia article and thinks he understands what's happening?
Go for a long walk. Cool down a bit. Then maybe crack open a book.
>I'm pretty sure it's nothing good
Using knowledge to delete the physical universe is good. CERN are the heroes we need.
You know, it wouldn't actually be too difficult for some really dedicated billionaires to end life on earth as we know it. A large enough body, accelerated sufficiently and aimed properly at the right spot on Earth, or maybe two or three just for good measure, is effectively within our hypothetical reach now, as an industrial species. Drop one into, say, the Great Lakes, one down around Venezuela, one over in the Caspian Sea and one down around the South China Sea and that'd pretty much be that.
I am not wrong. It is impossible to create antimatter. You are arguing something you clearly do not understand. You have not reviewed the literature, you have looked at a Wikipedia summary of theories developed by one small group of scientists who managed to observe some antimatter. Your problem is that you need so badly to be right, you're afraid to look at the possibility you may be wrong. Do not argue what you know very little about.
You're wrong and you're an idiot. I've read the literature, I've studied the subject formally, I've posted supporting links. You've just acted like a fucking moron.
You're lying and that means you suck. Shush.
that's like saying "you can't MAKE gasoline from crude oil! you are just collecting the left overs after cracking!"
I don't think it's a fear of the unknown necessarily, I think it's more about fearing what others would inflict upon others should they have the opportunity to do so. I mean I don't think anyone would have any problem whatsoever, if they were going in with nothing but good intentions (And being cautious of course).
If say they did stumble upon something, that would give them immense power or make them a God or God-like, but the cost came at the expense of others, do you think they wouldn't do it? Shit, I think they would and sadly they probably wouldn't even give it any thought.
Just when people act behind closed doors and a curtain of secrecy they have no one to answer to but themselves, just some food for thought.
Oh and to elaborate, yeah a good portion of the time, whenever anything gets discovered people start talking about the potential military applications.
So there usually is abuses of science and technology, and our first instinct being how can we either defend ourselves by killing others, or how can we use it to attack and kill others? Very rarely do we look at something and say "How can we better mankind with this"?
Many Christians have stated overtly for over a century that they're afraid of that idea. So yeah, as Christians have repeatedly said it and demonstrated it, it's pretty obviously true. Not all Christians, of course, but hundreds of millions of them.
World conquest by way of time travel.
It's one of the most ambitious undertakings humanity have ever taken, it certainly is a great tool for furthering our understanding of the Universe.
But it's multi-purposed and they've said before that they're interested in using it to prove whether or not alternate realities do infact exist. Even if there isn't any nefarious purpose planed for the Hadron Collider, it's still best to be cautious lest we do something stupid and reckless.
CERN is attempting to build and monopolise on Time Machines creating a new world order where they have undisputed control the world over the world and it's whole population.
No one will be able to do anything to stop them once they have successfully completed the first few machines
Maybe they're just fedora tippers, it is a science thing after all.
It's not just a video game idiot, and no HE not I, was just posting it for some laughs. So again just because you didn't understand everyone else is a retard, so wanna guess who's the real retard?
If it's not a Doomsday Device then why is it dooming all of us?!
You're the one who thinks people will truly believe that and also incapable of understanding people telling references to media for shits and giggles.
Honestly, from what ive seen in this thread, somebody could claim that they believe the sun is a giant, burning, squirrel anus and id believe them. Makes about as much sense as OP's concerns.
>Just when people act behind closed doors and a curtain of secrecy they have no one to answer to but themselves, just some food for thought.
CERN publishes all their findings and you can go look at the data right now. They've been very open about it.
Even more if you are in academia and in physics you can get access to the raw data, which would be useless to most everybody else because they wouldn't be able to process it/understand it.
>If say they did stumble upon something, that would give them immense power or make them a God or God-like, but the cost came at the expense of others, do you think they wouldn't do it? Shit, I think they would and sadly they probably wouldn't even give it any thought.
Fear, again. I don't even want to address this, you're grasping at what ifs, not what is. But to make it clear you're talking about a project with hundreds, if not thousands of people involved.
Maybe, just maybe... They're trying to collide particles.
The damn thing does little more than throw atoms at each other when they're traveling close to the speed of light, then a huge sensor array (that isn't really as sensitive as it needs to be) detects what exploding atoms turn into, finally a supercomputer runs the results (for months) and figures out just what happened.
No, it won't create the effect of an A-bomb because it's done in a vacuum surrounded by sensors with no uranium anywhere around.
Yes, they can and have created antimatter at CERN and in other colliders around the world, and even have a stockpile of several dozen atoms of it suspended in vacuums and held up by magnetic fields somewhere in Europe.
Yes, there was a statistically insignificant chance that in one experiment that they would have created an artificial black hole (one with no mass of matter) but earth lucked out and their theories that said it would be safe were proven correct.
Yes, they have proven all sorts of sci-fi type sub-atomic stuff exists at the cost of crazy amounts of money.
So... Here's WHY:
For the most part the smartest people on earth are guessing about how things really work, Einstein did it, Hawkings does it, that String Theory guy is grasping at straws half the time BUT there's a tiny little chance that CERN will prove some guess correct or give us reasons to come up with a better theory, and when that happens we will be leaps and bounds closer to making Star Trek tech a reality. Most scientists say that makes it all worth it.
I mean, jesus christ, we barely understand what makes magnets work, let alone gravity or time.
Let me see, if I had to be what you declare to be brainwashing from 1/10 posts on here that are plausibly more real than the normalcy everyone clings so tightly to, then I suppose I could agree.
You seem highly upset. Perhaps you should turn on your television and invoke a euphoric laugh to bring you out of that stupor.
Let OP have his psychotic episode. The idiocy entertains us.
>BUT there's a tiny little chance that CERN will prove some guess correct or give us reasons to come up with a better theory,
It fucking found the Higgs Boson. If you do not understand the significance of that, then you need not post in this thread.
Yeah, that is the big win, but they knew it was going to be there.
It was further confirmation of an already confirmed theory. No legit physicists were claiming it wouldn't ever be found, only whether if the CERN systems had the capability to detect it.
I promise, no more science-talk-hokum spoilers.
CERN is deviljuice.
I just pretend it's not because it's so spoopy.
